The process of Lucky draw

A Blockchain System for Azerbaijan’s Digital Economy

Azerbaijan has been a hotbed for a series of ambitious fintech-related announcements over the past several months, as the nation’s authorities were apparently moving to implement a series of innovative technological solutions in banking and e-government systems.

Repeated statements by government representatives suggested that at least part of the program relied on blockchain infrastructure. Most recently, as Cointelegraph reported, the chairman of Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee revealed plans to implement blockchain technology to build an online-accessible cargo transportation database. Earlier in May, a high-ranking official for the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA), speaking at the Fintex summit in Baku, mentioned the forthcoming implementation of a “blockchain system and artificial intelligence in the banking sector.” How are these disparate elements supposed to work together, and what is the scope of these blockchain-based solutions’ intended uses?

Early announcements

The snippets of news about a massive government initiative involving blockchain technology being underway in Azerbaijan began to pop up here and there back in October 2018. Farid Osmanov, CBA’s chief information officer, first announced the five-year program for the digital transformation of the economy — including a partnership with IBM on a distributed ledger system to be used in the banking sector — at the Azerbaijan-Germany Business Forum on Energy and ICT. In November, chairman of the Azerbaijani Internet Forum, Osman Gunduz, told the press that a few other state agencies were on the course to implement distributed ledger-based solutions in areas such as housing, utilities and even the court system to facilitate record-keeping and notary services.

While it became clear from early statements that the pilot blockchain system was to be built in collaboration with IBM on Hyperledger Fabric, it was not until April 2019, when media reports began to surface, that a branch of another big-name technology firm — Lenovo Professional Services — was also involved in the project on the hardware side. With two major industry players on board, it became clear that a comprehensive state program is at work here.

Government services hit X-Road

According to Nijat Asadli, manager of Azerbaijan’s Digital Trade Hub (DTH), there are three main areas in which the government seeks to boost innovation by deploying digital infrastructure: the DTH itself, the e-Government portal and central bank operations. The DTH is an electronic public-private partnership platform designed to facilitate the development of e-commerce in Azerbaijan and the broader region. It connects a number of governmental agencies, banks and private companies to provide a range of domestic, international and electronic services for businesses and private citizens alike.

One of the solutions available on the DTH platform is called the Single Export Application. It allows local producers to obtain all the documentation they need to hit the international markets — including licenses, permissions, customs declarations and even to apply for a government export subsidy. Another unique service available through DTL, Asadli told Cointelegraph, is electronic and mobile residency:

“Azerbaijan is the second country in the World after Estonia to offer electronic residency and first ever to offer a mobile residency. This service allows non-residents to establish a company online within a day in Azerbaijan and use all of the e-Services in the country. All they require is a smart phone — and they can start a location-independent business in Azerbaijan.”

The e-Government portal, integrated with all the user-facing government organizations, provides online access to more than 400 additional governmental services.

It has to be noted that both the DTH and the e-Government portal are built on open-source X-Road technology, a data exchange layer (DXL) solution that enables organizations to communicate over the internet and offer online services. Originally developed in Estonia in the early 2000s, X-Road underpins the Baltic country’s e-government infrastructure, as well as integration with neighboring Finland’s data exchange layer.

While X-Road developers describe it as a “distributed integration layer between information systems,” which led to speculations that it relies on blockchain technology internally, it is, in fact, not the case. As the Nordic Institute for Interoperability Solutions (NIIS), the organization responsible for developing the X-Road core, went on to explain, both blockchain and X-Road use cryptographic hash functions for linking data items to each other, otherwise they “serve very different purposes and use cases.” Each X-Road server maintains its own message log archive and stores it locally; other participants of the ecosystem, unlike the nodes on a distributed ledger network, do not have access to those archives.

Blockchain for digital identification

Right now, the only digital infrastructure initiative of the Azerbaijani government that relies on blockchain technology is the one that the nation’s central bank is overseeing. As the CBA’s chief information officer, Farid Osmanov, told Cointelegraph in an email, the government enacted a document in September 2018 entitled the State Program on Expansion of Digital Payments for 2018-2020 — a roadmap for coordinating technological advancements in digital banking. According to Osmanov:

“By implementing new financial technologies in the market, they believe they can boost the cashless economy and extend digital services, making them transparent and available for citizens.”

As a key condition to enable digital banking services, the program outlined a “private blockchain framework with trusted nodes, permissioned access and consensus services” for user identification.

The pilot project that the CBA embarked on to advance the goals of the state program has three prongs: the development of a strategic digital innovation plan, the creation of the blockchain-based digital identification system, and the deployment of the blockchain hardware. Lenovo was summoned to advance the latter goal in October 2018. According to Osmanov, the infrastructure that they put up relies on some of the company’s most innovative tech:

“The solution uses Lenovo ThinkAgile HX7820 Appliance software and hardware, which is the first 4-socket HX system installation in the world. The solution operates on the latest Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the Skylake generation and Acropolis OS from Nutanix is chosen as the virtualization platform. This solution is based on the RDMA technology, and this installation was the first in the world, where RDMA configured in productive environment.”

The open-source Hyperledger Fabric protocol, hosted by the Linux Foundation, serves as the software foundation for the identification system. Having used Hyperledger extensively to develop numerous corporate blockchains, IBM is now contributing expertise to the Azerbaijani government’s initiative. Its sponsors expect that the system will see full operational implementation by the end of 2019.

The main use of the prospective identification system will be in enabling citizens and businesses to deliver their personal data to banks and credit organizations in the form of digitally signed documents. Essentially, the blockchain system will automate the Know Your Customer (KYC) process, all the while dramatically decreasing processing time. The digital identification system will be incorporated into the e-Government system, and the open API architecture will allow banks to integrate it with their digital infrastructures through a standardized process.

Another remarkable efficiency that the system is expected to introduce will be a high level of user control over what data — and how much — they would like to share with financial organizations, Osmanov noted:

“Banks will have access to required personal data only after customer’s confirmation, so individuals and legal entities can personally control and authorize data sharing.”

The central bank’s CIO also mentioned that the authorities recognize the need for an improved legislative framework that comes with such massive technological developments. The CBA is already doing its research on international best practices and benchmarks, and is engaging with other state agencies in a conversation regarding regulatory improvements that the new system’s advent could evoke.

Limited use

With the new digital identification system on the way, Azerbaijan is about to take its place among the ranks of countries that have implemented permissioned blockchain solutions to improve the efficiency of a certain aspect of government operations. The expansion of this effort might well see the state’s performance in other domains of record-keeping — like the customs database announced recently — benefit from the introduction of distributed ledger technology. Still, yet another adherent of the “blockchain before crypto” approach, the nation is only ready to go so far: According to a November 2018 statement by the CBA’s first chairman, issuing a state-backed digital currency is out of the question for Azerbaijan.

15 potential college football bowl game upsets

The college football regular season is now officially a thing of the past and the ultra competitive bowl season is upon us. Like the year-end holidays, it’s a wonderful time for college football fans to kick back, relax and enjoy some football and an unparalleled atmosphere.

Of course, with the bowl games come the potential for surprises. Some teams will be motivated to play their best, while others are happy to finally end their seasons, leading to plenty of upsets.

Here’s a look at 15 potential college bowl games upsets.

15. Boise State vs. Oregon (-7) – Las Vegas Bowl, Dec. 16

The Ducks have seen the spread get as high as +8, which is likely attributed to the play of sophomore quarterback Justin Herbert, who has ignited offensive dominance. But despite that, there’s no denying Oregon’s overall inconsistency this season and struggles against ranked teams (0-3). The Ducks will also be somewhat shorthanded with running back Royce Freeman missing the game. The Broncos, meanwhile, are capable of riding the shoulders of running back Alexander Mattison and quarterback Brett Rypien, who helped lead the team to multiple wins over top-25 teams this year.

14. Colorado State (-5.5) vs. Marshall – Gildan New Mexico Bowl, Dec. 16

The Rams are a well-balanced team averaging over 500 yards of total offense per game, but they faltered down the stretch, going 1-3 over their final four games. On the other side of that coin, the Thundering Herd allow fewer than 20 points per game, but also struggled down the stretch, going 1-4 over their final five games. Needless to say, the New Mexico Bowl pits two recently struggling teams against each other in a matchup of strong offense versus strong defense. That strong defense may pave the way to a bowl upset.

13. Louisiana Tech vs. SMU (-5.0) – DXL Frisco Bowl, Dec. 20

The Mustangs enter the Frisco Bowl with a potent and high-powered offense, but the Bulldogs are no slouches, either. While Louisiana Tech may score more than 10 points fewer per game, they also allow nearly 10 points fewer per game. And defensively, SMU simply doesn’t have what it takes to stop any competent offense, allowing nearly 500 yards per game. This game is likely to be a shootout that’s settled on the final possession.

12. Florida International vs. Temple (-7.5) – Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, Dec. 21

Temple seems like the obvious choice in this game, which is represented by the 7.5-point spread. However, the Owls were wildly inconsistent this season and have proven themselves just as capable of falling in upset fashion as they have winning in upset fashion. In games where they’ve faced strong opponents, the Owls have surrendered at least 43 points each time (against UCF, USF and Notre Dame). Needless to say, the potential for an upset in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl has much more to do with the Owls than it does Florida International, who were also on both ends up an upset this season.

11. UAB vs. Ohio (-7.5) – Bahamas Bowl, Dec. 22

The Bobcats may be heavy favorites and deservedly so, but the experts may be sleeping on UAB a bit. After terminating the football program in 2014, the Blazers turned to head coach Bill Clark in hopes of resurrection in 2017 and they got exactly that. Not only did the UAB football program return, they were led to an 8-4 record and their first bowl game since 2004. From a sheer on the field standpoint, Ohio is the better team. But the UAB Cinderella story is one win away from being completed and there’s stock to be put in that. Sometimes things are just meant to be.

10. Utah (-7.5) vs. West Virginia – Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl, Dec. 26

West Virginia being without two of its top players largely contributes to them being underdogs. They may not have running back Justin Crawford or quarterback Will Grier in this one, but they still have Kennedy McKoy to help carry the load, and he’s averaged 5.1 yards per carry. While the Utes are the stronger team defensively, they fell apart down the final stretch, losing six of their final eight games. If nothing else, this game should be much closer than the 7.5-point spread would indicate.

9. Purdue vs. Arizona (-4) – Foster Farms Bowl, Dec. 27

Purdue-Arizona should probably be close to a pick ’em, but Vegas still has the Wildcats as 4-point favorites. The reason for that is obvious: Led by do-it-all quarterback Khalil Tate, Arizona averages nearly 42 points per game and puts up nearly 500 yards in total offense weekly. But the Boilermakers are made specifically to win on the defensive side of the ball, allowing fewer than 20 points per game. If they can get anything of quality on offense, Purdue will absolutely have an opportunity to walk away with an upset.

8. Virginia Tech vs. Oklahoma State (-4) – Camping World Bowl, Dec. 28

Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State each under-performed compared to expectations this season, but both finished inside the top 25 nonetheless. And in the Camping World Bowl, all eyes will be on quarterbacks Josh Jackson and Mason Rudolph. The outcome of the game will likely come down to Rudolph, who has to find a way to compete against a Hokies defense that allows fewer than 14 points and under 190 yards passing per game.

7. Wake Forest (-3.0) vs. Texas A&M – Belk Bowl, Dec. 29

Offensively and defensively, the numbers are basically a wash between Wake Forest and Texas A&M. And while many may not want to hear it, the Aggies faced a much more difficult schedule in 2017 thanks to intense SEC West battles. That’s not to dismiss what the Demon Deacons faced in the ACC — especially against teams like Clemson — but losing to mediocre teams like Duke and Florida State doesn’t breed much confidence against a tough SEC opponent.

6. Arizona State vs. N.C. State (-6) – Hyundai Sun Bowl, Dec. 29

The Wolfpack had moments where they looked like legitimate contenders in 2017, coming up with big wins over the then-ranked Florida State Seminoles and Louisville Cardinals, but then had letdowns against Wake Forest and Clemson (a game they led at halftime). Meanwhile, the Sun Devils bounced back from a 2-3 start to finish with five wins in their last seven games. That stretch included a major victory over Washington. If Arizona State can play a little defense under their new defensive leadership, they’re most certainly poised for an upset win in the Sun Bowl.

5. Northwestern (-7.5) vs. Kentucky – Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, Dec. 29

Northwestern scores more points per game, allows fewer points per game and puts up more yards per game than Kentucky, so it’s no surprise they are 7.5-point favorites heading into the Music City Bowl. However, it’s Wildcats running back Benny Snell who’s going to make the difference in this late December game. Averaging more than 5.0 yards per carry and having scored 18 touchdowns on the season, Kentucky will control the clock by handing Snell the rock early and often.

4. Ohio State (-7.5) vs. USC – Cotton Bowl, Dec. 29

Throw out the records, throw out the statistics and throw out the point spread. The Cotton Bowl puts together two of the best college football programs between USC and Ohio State. There’s a deep and rich history between these two programs, and it has produced some wild upsets and classic games. Why would the 2017 Cotton Bowl be any different? Ohio State hasn’t looked great of late, while USC’s offense ensures they’re a factor in all their games. This battle of 11-win teams will likely come down to the wire.

3. Louisville (-7) vs. Mississippi State – TaxSlayer Bowl, Dec. 30

Louisville may be the popular pick because of quarterback Lamar Jackson, but they’ve been on the wrong end of more than a few upsets this season. Case in point: losses to Boston College, Wake Forest and N.C. State. And against a strong Mississippi State defense that is SEC-tested, someone other than Jackson is going to have to step up. If not, the Bulldogs, who lost three of their four games to top-13 opponents, will walk away with a big upset in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

2. Washington vs. Penn State (-2.0) – Fiesta Bowl, Dec. 30

The 2-point spread in the Fiesta Bowl may not be enough to consider a Penn State loss a true upset, but going into the game, many were picking the Nittany Lions. And as we’ve seen this season, they’re more than capable of losing a handle on a game they are considered favorites (Michigan State). On the other side, the Huskies have a rushing attack that can match Penn State’s, as well as an X-factor in Dante Pettis, who is capable of scoring in multiple ways.

1. Wisconsin (-6.5) vs. Miami – Orange Bowl, Dec. 30

It wasn’t that long ago the Miami Hurricanes were in the national championship hunt, but consecutive losses to Pittsburgh and Clemson ultimately did them in. For Wisconsin, it was a final week loss to Ohio State that eliminated them from the same contention. Now the two square off in the Orange Bowl where the Badgers are 6.5-point favorites. The two teams have equally strong offenses and top-notch defenses, but it’s the “it” factor that matters most. And with no bias attached, The U has seemed to dominate the “it” factor all year, judging by how often they broke out the Turnover Chain during the season.

Panavision revives 70mm for a digital world: part 2

Does large format really create a greater sense of depth and dimensionality in a flat image? Read on to find out…

MAGNIFICATION: REALITY’S NEW BEST FRIEND

Let’s start with a couple of images, which will save us a few thousand words of explanation:

This is where the “epic” look, that I remember from Panavision Super 70 films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, comes from. There are three things to notice here:

• The subject’s face is round in the bottom image, while it appears wide and flat in the top image.

• The background appears closer to the subject in the bottom image.

• Depth of field is reduced in the lower image, even though the angle of view is nearly the same.

To make this more obvious, I’ve made an animated GIF that flips between these images:

Tight lenses magnify the image. This is easy to visualize, as we all know that longer lenses make objects appear larger in the frame than shorter, wider lenses. Standard Super 35mm focal lengths project an image that fits perfectly on a Super 35mm sensor, but fill only the very center of a 70mm DXL sensor. Resizing that tiny Super 35mm image to fit on a 70mm sensor requires magnification, and that is achieved by using a lens of a longer focal length. In this example, a 50mm lens on a 70mm sensor roughly matches a 27mm wide angle lens on a Super 35mm sensor.

While the angles of view are roughly the same, a longer lens is still a longer lens. They don’t show the same kind of distortion that we see in wide lenses, and this results in a wide angle image that reproduces shapes in a more accurate and pleasing manner than is possible when shooting in S35 with the same angle of view. The fact that the background feels closer results in increased background detail, even though that background is softer. Sometimes the larger background creates an increased sense of depth, as depth cues become visible on the background itself. And the ability to throw the background out of focus on a wide shot, if desired, becomes a powerful tool in guiding the eye around an extremely high resolution image that may only be on the screen for a few seconds.

“You get these incredibly big shots, but you don’t feel that they’re wide angle… You feel like you’re right there, in the moment. And that’s a really unique experience. It has to do with how the image size and the magnification work together.” -John Schwartzman, ASC

35MM ANAMORPHIC VS. 70MM SPHERICAL: CLOSE, BUT NOT QUITE

The following images, found on Wikipedia, show the difference between spherical 35mm film capture and anamorphic film capture:

The angle of view captured by a spherical lens on a 70mm sensor is nearly the same height as that captured by an anamorphic lens on a 35mm full frame sensor. This is because each lens has roughly the same magnification, at least in the vertical axis.

A spherical lens simply projects an image onto the film or sensor. An anamorphic lens squeezes the image first, projecting an image that’s taller than the standard 35mm frame while also compressing it horizontally by 2:1.

The excellent IOS app PCam shows that, for the same focal length lens, both formats see roughly the same angle of view:

This does not mean that these formats are completely comparable in how they render perspective. Anamorphic lenses are effectively two lenses in one: a longer focal length vertically, and a wider focal length horizontally. A 50mm anamorphic lens, for example, is a 50mm lens in the vertical axis and a 25mm lens in the horizontal axis, while a spherical lens is 50mm in both axes.

You should see some of the benefits of large format cinematography simply by shooting 35mm anamorphic on a full frame sensor. It won’t be completely the same, though: the squeeze eliminates a fair bit of horizontal resolution, so while vertical resolution is increased, horizontal resolution is significantly decreased. And a 35mm anamorphic image certainly can’t compete with a full resolution image captured through a spherical lens on an 8K sensor. (If you want to be the ultimate overachiever, Panavision makes anamorphic lenses for the 70mm format.)

While many of us enjoy the anamorphic look, it’s nice to have the option of the spherical look, with less distortion and higher resolution but the same depth of field.

SUMMARY: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

During an email exchange with Michael Cioni, Senior Vice President of Innovation for both Panavision and Light Iron, he made a series of comments that I felt summed all this up perfectly. I repeat them here with his permission:

If we simplify the question about sensor resolution, we are always met with an interesting fork in the road. In order for digital sensors to achieve a large format aperture, there are essentially two main options:

Increase the pixel pitch and plot them on a larger target, maintaining the same resolution

Shrink the pixel pitch and plot them on a larger target

In the first choice, if you were to increase or expand the size of each pixel and spread them out, you would notice an increase in contrast as well as introduce additional artifacts that make the image appear to have a “duotone” effect due to macro blocking that would render the images very sharp (this is a common problem with large electronic signage). However, when you shrink the pixels and plot them on a bigger target as in choice two, something interesting happens…

Smoothness.

That’s the word our DPs seem to keep circling back to. Somewhat serendipitously, “smoothness” is also a common word used to describe what the still photography market has experienced as they, too, have transitioned to an increase in resolution coupled with a decrease in pixel size. Most people (photographers and cinematographers) generally prefer the benefits of large format when shooting images. The irony is, in order for the large format properties to work, your resolution automatically goes up.

This is a key concept to unpack because the general consensus among artists is to assume that resolution is the goal of making a better sensor when in fact, it’s merely a result. In order to provide smother images with a noticeable increase in field of view and depth of field control, resolution must go up. Yet when this happens to the polygons forming pixels on a CMOS imager, the increase in pixels actually lowers contrast and increases transition from one code value to the next. That transition then allows a sensor to better apply its fixed dynamic range values across more area (particularly smaller areas), which effectively increases the dimensionality of an image (what we qualify as smoothness) because a smoother transition gives the illusion of increased depth.

An over-simplified way of saying it is you can’t assign all available dynamic range to an element that can’t be resolved. An increase in resolution increases precision, which allows more available dynamic range to be applied to subtle areas of the frame creating more transition.

Here’s how these concepts play out in a very basic chain-equation:

Increased sensor size = increased resolution (provided the pixels remain small)

Increased resolution + sensor size = increased magnification (improving field of view and depth of field characteristics)

Increased magnification = more dimensional separation (z-depth creative control)

Increased dimensional separation = increased precision placement for color application

Increased color application = more granular transitions (from bit to bit)

More granular transitions = less contrast (less binary or coarse bit transition)

Less contrast = less perceived sharpness

Less perceived sharpness means images appear smoother

The above concept does not mean that lower resolution cameras produce poor images. That is simply not true, nor do I believe that. However, the above chain equation explains why higher resolution, when coupled to a larger target, creates smoother results. And in the pursuit of increased quality and precision, the higher resolution image is going to have more of a positive impact than people may initially suspect.

The most common criticism I hear from skeptics in regard to DXL and RED’s 8K sensor program is that it’s going to make images sharper to the point that you’re going to see inside the pores of a face. But when they come back from a shoot, it is common to hear artists say, “These are some of the best images I’ve ever shot.” What’s more, the DXL program has an extremely high repeat customer factor to which cinematographers are returning for their 4th or 5th shoots on this sensor. When they ask us what is going on that makes this 8K image look so good, I ask them if they have a still camera. Many DPs now carry the Fuji GFS or SONY Alpha series cameras, with the a7R I and a7R II being among the most popular. When they make the connection between what their still cameras can do, with their high megapixel count, and DXL’s large 8K sensor, they begin to consider that resolution may not be their enemy. In fact, many describe DXL as the first cinema camera that takes images that look like some of the best still cameras on the market… only now they can move.

It has been said by many, “We don’t want more pixels, we want better pixels.” This language confuses me. So I challenge supporters of this concept to define “better pixel.” A conclusion we come to is that a better pixel has higher precision with better, brighter, more colorful, controllable output. What we have learned with RED over the past few years is that a better output requires a better input. So in the interest of achieving a better pixel, the system that can capture a superior input (resolution included) will always produce a superior output.

Add to that the optical component, where large format lenses normalize wide angle perspective so the audience senses greater depth but without feeling 35mm wide angle distortion, and you’ve got a recipe for greatly enhanced dimensionality that one can feel on nearly any size of screen.

I’m going to leave you now with two videos that are the best examples of the 70mm look that I could find online. One is a collection of clips from the film Lawrence of Arabia, a personal favorite of mine, shot beautifully on 65mm film using the Panavision Super 70 system. The second is a project produced recently by Panavision. While these films initially look different, there are commonalities: they are soft yet full of detail; they are rich in subtle color and tonal variations; and they both have that epic wide-angle-without-distortion look that I relate to large format films from the mid-20th century, when motion pictures weren’t simply entertainment, but were also spectacles.

Before I jump into the weird beauty products that I found online, I wanted to share a few of the summer essentials that I’m currently loving.
