extensive thoughts under the cut, because I'm a ridiculous person who went through and took question-by-question notes, and then rambled about the result.

1 - are you a good person

[laughs] walloped from moment one. Alec would say that it's a choice he makes. but here? he says "are you?" indirect lil shit..... love u.

2 - the house you grew up in

loving early, then cloaked in grief and a lingering distance that stubbornly stuck around despite multiple attempts to bridge it. the thing about Alec is that he's a huge community guy in part bc he grew up with a nagging aching loneliness

3 - it's getting bad again-

oh. so many good options here.

You can’t stop moving. First a shaky leg, then pacing, then more time at the gym, then adding 3 extra miles to your run, then twirling, dancing alone in your room. You can’t stop moving. You’re so tired. -- Alec Mercar going for a run at 3 in the morning to cope IS canonical.

fuck, these are both great options. going with the movement one, it feels particularly like him. transitioning has made Alec more at home in his body. he feels good moving. he finds his stretching/workout/training routines soothing.

[sidenote: You haven’t slept in days. The smoky figure standing at the base of your bed has grown more solid each night. Sometimes, it isn’t there at all, but when you go out on your balcony for a cigarette it stands on the street below. -- this is very Neve]

4 - you enter a town

I was torn between It’s in the middle of a festival, with everyone wearing colourful masks and robes. You are severely underdressed, but purchase a drink from a stall and watch the dancers anyway. because that's very Alec, and Carefully, because it made me laugh (AND it's very Alec). Alec loves a good show, but he does enter every new area with his eyes peeled and ears open. hm....

A wolf appears on the path ahead of you. It growls and doesn’t move. It’s just a wolf, and angry. Nothing special about this simple, angry wolf. Stop shaking, dear. It’s only a wolf. -- how could I possibly resist this one? how many dreams is he going to have just like this?

Your childhood bedroom, exactly as you remember it. Your long-dead pet is sitting on the floor. -- [added by me: you can hear your fathers - both of them - laughing in the next room] what wouldn't he give for more of that? but the feeling, the moment, has long past. none of them are the same people they were back then.

7 - You break the lock on a small, dusty chest. What’s inside?

true rogue question, hallelujah. lotta good options again.

A small silver dagger, with a red leather handle. It has a pattern of ivy engraved on one side, and the base is serrated. -- Alec loves a good knife, it must be said. even if he is more of a sword guy.

A small envelope with your name on it in neat script. -- when it comes down to it, Alec really just wants the people he loves to talk to him. absolution from beyond the grave, even. I picked this one.

8 - What do you fear most?

aw HELL, man. ok. ok. front runners:

Loss of freedom; Lack of control; Loneliness

loss of freedom is easy to explain - he's grown up in tevinter with slavery being used as the ax hanging over everyone's heads. he's part of an underground abolitionist group that regularly starts slave uprisings. of course he fears lack of freedom, he's seen up close what that does to you.

lack of control - easy 1:1 to 'fear of being controlled by blood magic' which is... YEAH. ties into fear of a lack of freedom. and he's not a mage, so he doesn't have any good defenses against it, when it comes down to it. this is also closest to what I would say Alec's answer is [true helplessness].

Loneliness is also up there - he doesn't do well on his own, he's a huge people person, he needs to belong, he cherishes support systems. he figures he can endure almost anything as long as he's got other people he trusts & can rely on in his corner. I actually wouldn't call it loneliness so much as isolation. he's not afraid of the emotion, he's afraid of the state of being.

as far as I can tell, picking any of these 3 didn't effect the outcome, so. why not say all 3.

9 - What do you crave most?

jesus the hits do not stop coming huh? off the cuff, I would say to belong, which isn't an option here. Alec wants to make the world better, and to live a life surrounded by people he loves and trusts, doing good work. so I'm a bit torn between seen/understood/tenderness/power over yourself. I'm going with understood.

10 - You have been given a chance to time travel, to do one moment over again. You…

well there's no option for 'go back and save the life of someone important to you,' so I'm going with Say yes to the girl in the alleyway when she asks if you have a light. frankly, because it reminds me of Neve. and because I love thinking about them almost crossing paths multiple times back when Alec was 17-20 at the military academy in Minrathous.

11 - Do you know what I want from you?

the information is useful to have but when it comes down to it - 'I don't care.'

The Devil

Restriction is not so terrible a thing as you think it is. One must not always be shackled to be prudent. You could use a set of handcuffs in your life, my love. Shall I forge them for you? We could be tied together, you and I. Maybe then you would not want for so many things. Maybe if you were drip fed what you wanted, you would only focus on the next drip, instead of the wide world of things there are to want. You consume what you love, you terrify the things you want. You have chewed your way through your life and you are still hungry. The old woman holds out a key. The iron around your wrist is so very heavy.

hm. WELL.

ok, thematically on point. also delights me that Alec and Esha landed on the same card lmao NO ESCAPING THE CAGED BIRD & CAGED HUNTING DOG METAPHORS.

lotta different angles to look at this from. the description itself is.. interesting. Alec's not above being shackled, depending on who's offering. [Alec being unwillingly shackled to Solas, terrible. Alec on his knees during some roleplay with Neve, excellent]. You consume what you love doesn't feel accurate, but you terrify the things you want absolutely does. he's got a big heart and a massive willingness to commit and he tends to fall for people who find that.. very scary.

the devil is such an interesting card and like, as with most of these, has a ton of different angles to view it through. Alec doesn't struggle much with trapping himself in his own mind [he's probably my most proactive protagonist. something wrong? let's do something about it! really goes after what he wants.] but you could totally view this through the entire Solas - blood magic - Varric situation - the illusion that permeates the whole narrative. and there are some lines in there that could easily be interpreted as like - imagine it's like being in a stream. the blood magic is the current pulling Rook along, guiding them to look at some things [here! an illusion of Varric!] and away from others [pulling a shade over all of Rook's memories that involve Varric being dead, nudging them away from reaching out to others, etc]. maybe there was a way to break out of that, if you looked hard enough, pushed yourself, turned and pressed on that bruise, hunted down the source of that odd hurt feeling, fought against the current. there are lines in-game that imply that Rook didn't want to look, that deep down they knew or suspected, that they went down that stream willingly, because the lie was a comforting one.

but Alec never sits with a comforting lie for too long.

the thing about him and the devil and willing vs unwilling bondage and lies and illusions and manipulation is that Alec walks out of that prison with blood already on his teeth. slip out of that chain around your neck and go for the throat.

the hunting dog that's been told all its life this is what you are, this is what you're good for, you're a tool, ours to use, go hunt for us slipping its leash and rounding on the wielder.

listen i'm obviously not AGAINST solavellan or solasmances of any sort (*gestures emphatically at all my fic-*) but solrook is soooo good. it hits so many of the same notes as his canon romance arc does, in terms of the actual underpinnings of the relationship development

rook trusted him. knew him, knew his past better than the inquisitor did, and still did - or well, can - choose to trust him at the last

and he sees rook change the world

because, in a big way, it is ROOK who changes the world. not with their own strength, not with their own expertise really, but in the role that solas was in so long ago - the core of a movement
