    Un homme récemment libéré d’un institut psychiatrique a hérité d’un manoir après le décès de ses parents fortunés. Après une série d’événements troublants, il en vient à croire que c’est hanté.

    “Delirium” est un thriller d’horreur psychologique américain datant de 2018, réalisé par Dennis Iliadis, à qui l’on doit également “The Last House on the Left” (2009). Les acteurs principaux sont, Topher Grace, qu’on a pu voir dans “BlacKkKlansman” (2018), Patricia Clarkson, qu’on a pu voir dans “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” (2018), Callan Mulvey, qu’on a pu voir dans “Beyond Skyline” (2017), Genesis Rodriguez, qu’on a pu voir dans “Run All Night” (2015).

“Delirium” aborde un thème déjà abordé à de multiples reprises dans l’univers de l’horreur, soit la folie psychologique. On se demande donc en permanence si les événements décrits sous nos yeux sont réels ou s’ils sont le fruit de l’imagination du personnage. Adam Alleca, le scénariste, nous invite donc à suivre Tom Walker (Topher Grace), un jeune homme, rendu à la liberté “partielle” après avoir été enfermé durant une vingtaine d’années dans un centre psychiatrique. Sa sortie se fait quelques jours à peine après le suicide de son richissime père, se voyant ainsi hérité des biens et de la demeure familiale.

C’est dans cette grande maison qu’il doit faire les preuves de sa possible réintégration dans la société, ayant l’obligation de porter un bracelet électronique, et de répondre à un téléphone de contrôle, muni d’un dispositif de vidéo, qui peut sonner à n’importe quel moment. Le tout supervisé par un agent de probation, Brody (Patricia Clarkson), qui se méfie singulièrement de lui. Rapidement, d’étranges événements le poussent à se demander si la demeure est hantée ou si tout ne serait pas le fruit de son esprit perturbé, allant jusqu’à se demander s’il n’est pas en train de faire une rechute dans la folie.

Les personnages sont peu nombreux, en dehors de Tom Walker, le principal protagoniste de l’histoire, et de Brody, l’agente de probation, on trouve également Lynn (Genesis Rodriguez), une charmante jeune femme, qui vient livrer les courses du supermarché du coin, Tom ne pouvant se déplacer en raison de son contrôle judiciaire strict. C’est par cette dernière que viendra finalement le salut de l’esprit de Tom. La jeune femme va lui permettre de faire la liaison avec le mode réel. Plus ambigu, le personnage d’Alex (Callan Mulvey), le frère aîné de Tom. Durant une bonne partie du métrage, on se demande si ce dernier est réel, ou uniquement présent dans l’esprit de Tom. Le travail de Dennis Iliadis, le réalisateur, est plutôt réussi dans ce sens, car on s’interroge longuement sur la réalité physique du personnage. Dans la toute dernière partie du film, la mère (Daisy McCrackin) de Tom et d’Alex fait son apparition, amenant avec elle un lot de révélations qui font littéralement froid dans le dos quant à la véritable personnalité du père de famille (Robin Thomas).

Le rythme est particulièrement lent dans ce métrage. “Delirium” se déroule tout doucement dans la grosse première partie, qu’on peut évaluer équivalent au deux-tiers des 96 minutes. C’est donc dans le dernier tiers, faisant donc office de deuxième partie de ce film, que les choses se mettent en place, que les révélations sont présentées, et qu’une forme d’action s’organise. La photographie Mihai Mălaimare Jr. offre une vraie personnalité à la maison, un style old-school, un mobilier passé, des tapisseries horribles qui nous ramènent dans les années 1930-1970. Ce dernier avait produit un travail plus coloré, plus dynamique sur “Sleepless” (2017). La bande musicale orchestrée par Nathan Whitehead ajoute de l’angoisse et du stress aux visuels pour offrir une ambiance particulièrement sombre, et même sinistre au métrage.

En conclusion, “Delirium” est un film d’horreur correct disposant d’une histoire familière, d’une intrigue sombre et d’un développement qui prend son temps. Le rythme est poussif dans la première partie pour s’intensifier dans le second segment, le récit est fluide et la narration est linéaire dans sa majorité, ponctuée de quelques flashbacks. La photographie s’apparente à un hui clos, centré sur les intérieurs de la grande demeure, la bande originale vient amplifier l’atmosphère sinistre et tragique du film. La distribution offre de bonnes prestations dans l’ensemble, mais certains personnages adoptent une attitude insolite par endroit. Un métrage qui se positionne légèrement au-dessus de la moyenne, sans rien apporter de novateur au film d’horreur psychologique.

hi! i looked into the video of the woman with all the guns pointed at her. while i am fully against police, it apparently turns out she had a warrant for a felony of kidnapping and ransom of actress daisy mccrackin--granted, the police werent able to say how she was involved. the amount of guns is still pretty unnecessary, but it's why there's so many cops. it still rubs me wrong absolutely, but i guess there's somewhat a reason for it.

Universal Pictures has officially announced the release date for when Halloween 2018 (read our review here) will be available on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, DVD, and Digital VOD, as well as a list of bonus features that will be included, one of which, a deleted shower scene that was shown in the marketing, has been released online.

The new Halloween will arrive on digital platforms on Dec. 28, followed by various Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD combo options arriving on January 15, 2019.

Among the more than 30 minutes of new bonus content, seven deleted/extended scenes will be included, but unfortunately it looks like no commentary tracks.

One of those deleted scenes, “Shower Mask Visit”, which was featured in many of the TV ads promoting the film, has already been officially released online to celebrate today’s home video announcement.

The scene, featuring our friend Rhian Rees (read our interview here), is actually almost identical to a scene that was filmed but never used for Halloween: Resurrection, in which Daisy McCrackin’s character is taking a shower when she is scared by a prankster in a Michael Myers mask.
