495. I watched Ghostbusters II, and I have questions

Hot take: I loved it.

When they fell on hard times in those five years, it made them more interesting to me. Although, it was never revealed what Winston did in those five years other than appearing at kids birthday parties with Ray. I know Red Letter Media didn't understand why Ray and Winston dances to the Ray Parker Jr. Ghostbusters theme, but I totally get it. My theory is that in the Ghostbusters universe, that song was totally a novelty song that only played on NYC radio stations. My theory is proven more after I saw Frozen Empire and Paul Rudd's character references it.

I do, however wonder why the kids wished He-Man was at their party instead .. I thought that Masters of the Universe/He-Man was more of a mid 80s craze?

I wanna know who Sigourney Weaver had 'dat baby with! Was it the guy who was jealous of Peter in the original film when he waited for Dana outside of orchestra practice? I bet it was him.

Egon wanting to do a gynecological exam on Dana as part of the investigation. Egon totally did it with that slime.

No more smoking! I kinda miss the smoking. I loved in the original that the boys pretty much welcome Winston in by lighting up a cigarette for him in the basement while they discuss Twinkies.

Peter MacNichol! I didn't even realize it was him until I was like forty minutes in. I love him, the only shining light from Ally McBeal! Did I miss why Dana was restoring paintings now instead of being in the orchestra? I guess it was because it was a day job so she could be with baby Oscar at night? I know at one point she tells Janosz that she'll be leaving soon since the baby is getting older?

They are cute as buttons in their suits fighting those death row ghosts in court.

Speaking of cute as buttons, Janine's glam makeover! She got that "return of Ghostbusters" paychecks now.

It's weird that New Years Eve is brought up, and is a giant part of the plot, but other than them wearing the Santa hats in the montage, and the aluminum tree in Peter's awesome apartment, that's all the Christmas we get. Did the entire movie take part in that week between Christmas and New Years? This video tries to figure it out.

Ooo the green dress. Winston saw it in a deleted scene, and said "[Peter's] not coming". Was that dress in the suitcase Peter brings over from Dana's apartment?

Speaking of the suitcase, that apartment scene before their dinner date, that scene felt like it was ten minutes long! I like Peter's apartment, so I'll let it slide.

Winston being scared of the ghost train is one of the best most overacted scenes ever. What was up with all the beheaded heads at the old Subway track?

Why did that scene involving Louis and Janine at Peter's apartment awake something in me? I do have a thing for guys like Louis. I need to put those feelings back away. Y'all know I gave up on dating!

I mean THIS?! With the earmuffs?! I need a minute. Even if Louis thought he had to save the Ghostbusters, I think him and Janine did some things first.

When that cop said "the Titanic just arrived", I felt the emotion in that line. He said it like it was real deal this really happened breaking news. Better Late Than Never.

Bobby Brown's sad cameo where he just opens the door at Gracie Mansion and asks the boys where he can get some ghostbusters stuff for his brother. Yes his song "On Our Own" (which I LOVE) is playing in the background.

I don't care about the Vigo stuff too much, the baby's acting makes the scene bearable however. Those twins who played Oscar were really good baby actors!

Them controlling the Statue of Liberty with the positive slime and the big flat Nintendo controller is silly as heck, and I am here for it.

Now, I know the movie got a cool reception when it came out in June of 1989, especially since it came out the weekend before the biggest movie of the year, Batman. Ghostbusters II made the biggest three day box office record at the time -- but Batman beat it the following weekend. I wanted to read some critic's initial reactions to the movie.

Vincent Camby of The New York Times almost gives away the entire movie's plot! I agree with most of his points, except for him saying the original was "overproduced and sloppy" the effects were made in 1984, what do you expect? On Christmas of 1988, NYT almost gives away the plot again in an article about the behind the scenes process of the film. (gift article)

I think Al meant a "junky" effect when he was referring to the Statue of Liberty walking around instead of a "junkie" effect, but I get what he's saying, even if I loved the scene for its silliness.

(My local paper ran this review too, so that's why you don't see one from my paper. ) I saw Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire the other day, and I feel like this was finally Ernie Hudson's chance to shine after being just the fourth Ghostbuster so so long. To me, each Ghostbuster has their own movie now: the original was Ray's, Ghostbusters II was Peter's, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was (ghost) Egon's, and Frozen Empire was Winston's.

I even found a newsgroup review from June of 1989. That is baby internet! Here is the archive, because I just feel like google groups is going to shut down the old newsgroup archives any day now. Wait, I just found another one (archive).

Here is an article about the press tour held at the newly renovated Plaza hotel in New York City. The press was already clamoring for a third movie. Of course, we wouldn't get that until 2020, 2021, of course.

In closing, never forget the Hardees promotion, with the noisemakers that were recalled almost immediately because lil kids ate the batteries. I remember being about six? and was terrified that my parents were going to take away my Ghostbusters noisemaker.

It was remiss of me to assume that Skip would be a Nature sim – I got things completely confused and it turns out that he’s Sports, Susie’s Fitness. What a team! I do like the idea of these two as buddies; sadly she’s off to Academie Le Tour while Dirk’s stuck with Dusty at SSU, but I’ll make sure they keep in touch.

I’m pretty certain that in every interaction Ginger’s had with anyone so far in my game she’s tickled the crap out of them.

I. Am. Iron Man.

So i didn’t get into all of the stuff i loved about Endgame in my review because i was still processing. here was just, SO MUCH, and i’m not talking about the many, many, easter eggs. I’m talking about all of the fanservice. All of the nods. All of the ending character arcs and plot points. Bro, the shine in this movie is so bright that an entire post was needed unto itself so here we go:

Clint’s family getting dusted. My guy, this is the MOST i have ever seen Hawkeye do and it was so much. Like, Jeremy Renner got to act and it was devastating. This man lost his entire world and it broke him. It f*cking broke him and you SEE that happen.

Robert Downey Jr. I’ve heard whispers that he might be nominated for an Oscar and i’d be okay with that. Dude kind of Dark Knight Joker’s his way through this movie. And that ending scene? I. Am. Ironman. Bruh!

Paper Football!

Karen Gillan’s Nebula was pretty legit. This is the most she’s done in these films and i, as man who absolutely adores his Ginger Goddess, was incredibly happy to see it. I was a curious how they were going to incorporate her relevance from the story, into this movie, and was happy to see that she was so prominent.

“I lost the kid.” F*ck you, movie, for making me feel things so early!

Rocket and Nebula. Seeing those two characters together, knowing what they lost? F*ck!

Toy’s entire unloading on Captain America after getting back from space was just... F*ck. He was right in the worse way and no trust. No trust. I get why he feels the way he does but both of these cats f*cked up.

Five years later. BRUH!

Scott Lang! Bro, Paul Rudd is a gift and he’s far more compelling and relevant in this flick than he’s ever been, even in his own movies. Dude was in the quantum realm and, for him, it’s only been 5 hours so he’s completely f*cking lost. Especially when...

F*cking grown ass Cassie! BRUH!! Are we going to get a Stature in the new MCU soon?? Seeing Emma Furhman walked out that door was ridiculous and the way Rudd played his surprised was perfect. I believed this was the first time he saw his what has to be his 15 year old daughter after last seeing her as a 10 year old. Solid f*cking scene.

Morgan Stark, are you kidding me? Kid was adorable! Terrible at her job but adorable to look at. And she did an admirable job as a proper for Stark to quip.

Professor Hulk was pretty okay, I like that Mark Rufflo’s arc had a finite conclusion but, i dunno? I kind of feel like this is temporary, as it is in the comics, but we’ll see. According to him, he was able to make that equilibrium happen in 18 months so he’s been that way for 3 and half years.

“I love you 3000.”

“Time travel!”

Literally any scene with Natasha and Clint but that first one when they finally see each other after so many years. If you’ve kept up on this entire saga, you know that Clint and Natasha love each other like siblings. He saved her from her bloody ass past, kind of, and literally set her on pace to become a hero. Clint saw her potential and nurtured her into the leader of the Avengers. Now, she has the opportunity to do it for him, to pull him out of the darkest that used to be her life. Which makes what happens not to much later a f*cking gut punch. Still, it was nice to see something “normal” return for those character.

Speaking of Natasha, Scarlett did a fantastic job as the character. For the first time since Winter Soldier, i felt like Black Widow was an actual character and not a prop. Like, when you look at it, these movies have been blessed with their casts and you get to see why in this flick. Her arc in this flick is one of finality but she’s able to do so much with her screen time, it’s ridiculous. Ma gives Tony a run for his money, easy.

New Asgard, Angry Girl, Meek, Korg, and Fat Thor. BRUH!

Chris Hemsworth doing his best impression of The Dude was hilarious and makes all of the sense. Dude had just destroyed Asgard and taken his place as king when Thanos decided to slaughter half his people, kill his best friend, kill his brother, and then Snapped. Thor lost 3/4 of the entire Asgardian race. There’s literally like, 12 houses in New Asgard. That’s what’s left. Dude’s understandably in a bad place.

TIME HEIST!!

Watching Hulk half-heartedly smash on his way to the Santum Santorum was cute. Speaking of...

Bro, the Ancient One kind of fending off Chitari was awesome. She would have definitely been there, doing her thing, over yonder. I never even thought of that! It was also dope seeing Tilda Swinton back for a cameo, the first of many time displaced shenanigans!

Everything on Morag was hilarious. Paring Nebula and Rhodey together was a stroke of genius. They play off each other well. I hope they have a bit more interaction going forard. Interesting enough, there are a couple of scenes where they get to interact, and it looks like Rhodey might have made a proper impression. Like, Nebula LIKES him and it’s cute as sh*t.

“That is destiny fulfilled.” Bruh, past Thanos just being okay with his murder is chilling.

That struggle to be Vormire’s sacrifice. Bro, that was f*cked up and it hurt when she fell.

Howard and Tony interacting as adults. That was awesome to see, I’m glad Tony got that in the end. he needed it.

Yo, Jarvis! Shout out to the one show that gets a reference in the movies! Nice!

Stark’s gauntlet. Cats are trying to argue that stark tech shouldn’t be able to harness the power of the tones but, why not? The current armor can do some incredible stuff and there’s a ton of vibranium availed to them now because of Okoye. It kind of makes sense they’d be able to find a way to make that happen.

Time-Travel Thanos! My man didn’t have nearly the presence in this film, than he did in the past and that’s okay. He’s not supposed to. this isn’t about stopping the Snap. It’s abut undoing it. It’s about AVENGING the fallen. Outside of being a final obstacle, Thanos holds no real relevance to Endgame. But, that last obstacle is a doozy!

Iron-Dad! Seriously, the reunion scene between Pete and Tony made me cry. The fact that they let Tom Holland and RDJ come up with that scene on their own; Like, all of that was improvised on the spot, was amazing. Seeing them together as the opposite of how i felt when Pete got dusted.

F*cking Wand, man! She solo’d Thanos as second time! and nearly killed him! Ma went in on him with brutality and pure rage! If not for Corvis bailing him out with spaceship guns, that would have been the end right there.

Wait, did i mention Rescue? Pepper out her in her own armor, making some vets in the hero game, look like straight rookies. Dope sh*t is dope!

Carol eating Thanos’ headbutt and that look of legitimate concern on his face. Keep in mind this is a Thanos with a five stone Infinity gauntlet on, and Captain Marvel is overpowering him. She’s a f*cking problem!

Watching Tony die was f*cked up. Rhodey and Pepper getting their moments, sure, but seeing Pete break down like that? Hearing him call Tony by his first name, for the first and last time, man, i lost it again. Tony watched Pete die five years ago and now Pete is watching Tony die. This is a 15 year old, man. man, f*ck this movie for making me feel things!

Yo, Harley was there! That was kind of dope. Kid got huge since Iron Man 3.

“I’m going to get you all the cheeseburgers you want” Come on, movie, you can’t keep emotionally devastating me like this. It’s not fair.

Old man Cap. I’m glad Falcon got the shield, he deserved it and thee’s no way Bucky and be Bucky cap, he’s a literal, publicly known, terrorist, but seeing an aged and happy cap who finally got some of that life Tony was talking about, did my heart some good. until...

My mans finally getting his dance. That’s it. That’s the last scene of this film; Steve and Peggy slow dancing in their home and i f*cking lost it again. He finally got to keep his date.

Endgame was so good, dude. This thing, even withit’s flaws, gave me, as a fan, everything i needed. If i never get another MCU film after this, i am good. We lost some pivotal characters, sure, but what was left, i think, is pretty special. I’m curious to see Far From Home now. That takes place immediately after this and i want to know what heading we’re going toward. It’ll be nice to get a breather after this bookend. It has been one helluva ride.

Clint saw her potential and nurtured her into the leader of the Avengers. Now, she has the opportunity to do it for him, to pull him out of the darkest that used to be her life. Which makes what happens not to much later a f*cking gut punch. Still, it was nice to see something “normal” return for those character.

Speaking of Natasha, Scarlett did a fantastic job as the character. For the first time since Winter Soldier, i felt like Black Widow was an actual character and not a prop. Like, when you look at it, these movies have been blessed with their casts and you get to see why in this flick. Her arc in this flick is one of finality but she’s able to do so much with her screen time, it’s ridiculous. Ma gives Tony a run for his money, easy.

Chris Hemsworth doing his best impression of The Dude was hilarious and makes all of the sense. Dude had just destroyed Asgard and taken his place as king when Thanos decided to slaughter half his people, kill his best friend, kill his brother, and then Snapped. Thor lost 3/4 of the entire Asgardian race. There’s literally like, 12 houses in New Asgard. That’s what’s left. Dude’s understandably in a bad place.

Everything on Morag was hilarious. Paring Nebula and Rhodey together was a stroke of genius. They play off each other well. I hope they have a bit more interaction going forard. Interesting enough, there are a couple of scenes where they get to interact, and it looks like Rhodey might have made a proper impression. Like, Nebula LIKES him and it’s cute as sh*t.

Stark’s gauntlet. Cats are trying to argue that stark tech shouldn’t be able to harness the power of the tones but, why not? The current armor can do some incredible stuff and there’s a ton of vibranium availed to them now because of Okoye. It kind of makes sense they’d be able to find a way to make that happen.

Time-Travel Thanos! My man didn’t have nearly the presence in this film, than he did in the past and that’s okay. He’s not supposed to. this isn’t about stopping the Snap. It’s abut undoing it. It’s about AVENGING the fallen. Outside of being a final obstacle, Thanos holds no real relevance to Endgame. But, that last obstacle is a doozy!

F*cking Wand, man! She solo’d Thanos as second time! and nearly killed him! Ma went in on him with brutality and pure rage! If not for Corvis bailing him out with spaceship guns, that would have been the end right there.

Wait, did i mention Rescue? Pepper out her in her own armor, making some vets in the hero game, look like straight rookies. Dope sh*t is dope!

Watching Tony die was f*cked up. Rhodey and Pepper getting their moments, sure, but seeing Pete break down like that? Hearing him call Tony by his first name, for the first and last time, man, i lost it again. Tony watched Pete die five years ago and now Pete is watching Tony die. This is a 15 year old, man. man, f*ck this movie for making me feel things!

Old man Cap. I’m glad Falcon got the shield, he deserved it and thee’s no way Bucky and be Bucky cap, he’s a literal, publicly known, terrorist, but seeing an aged and happy cap who finally got some of that life Tony was talking about, did my heart some good. until...

My mans finally getting his dance. That’s it. That’s the last scene of this film; Steve and Peggy slow dancing in their home and i f*cking lost it again. He finally got to keep his date.

Endgame was so good, dude. This thing, even with it’s flaws, gave me, as a fan, everything i needed. If i never get another MCU film after this, i am good. We lost some pivotal characters, sure, but what was left, i think, is pretty special. I’m curious to see Far From Home now. That takes place immediately after this and i want to know what heading we’re going toward. It’ll be nice to get a breather after this bookend. It has been one helluva ride.

MICHAEL AND THE MOVIES 2018

Disclaimer: Dit is mijn lijstje van favoriete films, films waar ik met veel plezier naar gekeken heb en die ik zeker nog meerdere keren ga kijken. Ook heb ik natuurlijk nog niet alle films van dit jaar kunnen zien. Als de lijst afwijkt van jouw favorieten, dan is dat prima. Want dat zijn jouw favorieten. Dit de mijne 😉 18. TOMB RAIDER Een van mijn favoriete actrices die een van mijn favoriete characters uit een game speelt? Sold.

17. ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Marvel Studios lijkt niet te stoppen en zelfs met meerdere films per jaar (3 in 2018), nog steeds in staat een prima product te leveren. Hoewel Ant-Man and The Wasp geen pareltje is, red de manier waarop Paul Rudd Scott Lang speelt veel en heeft hij (net als in het eerste deel) een goede chemie met de andere acteurs. Ant-Man zou zeggen dat The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) zijn sidekick is, maar het is gelukkig in vele scenes duidelijk andersom. En hoe ook deze film weer naadloos aansluit aan de rest van de MCU films is genieten geblazen.

16. FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD Allereerst moet ik zeggen dat J.K. Rowling een briljant boekenschrijver is, en ik vanaf de eerste Harry Potter fan ben, maar een script schrijven is toch wel andere koek. Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik heb genoten van The Crimes of Grindelwald, maar dit kwam meer omdat ik altijd een liefde zal hebben voor de wereld die Rowling gecreëerd heeft, dan de plot van dit tweede deel in de Fantastic Beasts serie. Als bedenker van het verhaal kan ze zelf bepalen hoe bepaalde personages zijn geworden zoals ze zijn, maar het kan ook fans van het eerste uur aardig in de war brengen na het zien van deze film. Dat gezegd hebbende, kan ik niet wachten op het derde deel (en verdere uitleg) in 2020.

15. EIGHT GRADE Amerikaanse comedian Bo Burnham besloot na een aantal succesvolle shows, waarin hij zijn creatieve talenten kwijt kon, een film te schrijven en deze ook zelf te regisseren. Elsie Fisher speelt de rol van Kayla Day, een tiener die worstelt met de alledaagse problemen op een middelbare school. Van erbij willen horen en welke rol social media hierbij speelt, tot alle ongemakkelijkheid die komt kijken bij de puberteit en de wereld om je heen. De film zit vol scenes die soms pijnlijk herkenbaar zijn uit de tijd dat je zelf nog op school zat, maar Burnham weet ook hier zo nu en dan de humor niet uit het oog te verliezen.

14. A STAR IS BORN Bradley Cooper heeft zich al meerdere malen bewezen als acteur (The Hangover, American Sniper, zelfs een rol als wasbeer in Guardians of the Galaxy), dus een uitstapje als regisseur leek een logische stap in zijn carrière. In A Star Is Born speelt hij een aan lager wal geraakte countryzanger, die tijdens een avond zuipen in de kroeg de talentvolle Ally (Lady Gaga) ontdekt en verliefd op haar wordt. Wat volgt laat zich raden, maar wat meer indruk maakt is dat Cooper ook nog eens zelf zingt en dat Gaga een geweldige acteerprestatie levert als Ally. De soundtrack geschreven voor deze film is subliem en het duet tussen de twee hoofdrollen gaat sowieso de Oscar pakken voor beste song volgend jaar, mark my words.

13. BUMBLEBEE Ondanks dat ik als kind groot fan was van de Transformers tekenfilmserie, konden de films van Michael Bay mij nooit echt bekoren. Teveel slow-motion shots, explosies, actie scenes die totaal niet te volgen waren en je niet wist waar je kijken moest... Bumblebee brengt het allemaal terug naar de basis: een simpel verhaal, dat bij vlagen doet denken aan Spielberg’s E.T. Het speelt zich zelfs af in de jaren ‘80 en voelt als een nieuwe start voor de Transformers franchise. Het doet de vorige films vergeten en dat beloofd wat voor de toekomst.

12. BLINDSPOTTING Een van de aangename verrassingen dit jaar komt van Rafael Casal en Daveed Diggs, die naast dat ze het script schreven, ook de hoofdrollen voor hun rekening nemen. Het verhaal gaat over twee vrienden die hun levenslange vriendschap onder de loep moeten nemen nadat een van hen terugkeert uit de gevangenis. De film balanceert humor, sterke dialogen en een aantal heftige scenes perfect en liet mij na het zien nog even sprakeloos nadenken over het moraal van het verhaal.  

11. BOHEMIAM RHAPSODY Acteur Rami Malek kende ik al van andere projecten, dus het was zeker de eerste paar minuten van de film erg lastig voor mij om hem te zien worstelen met het wat grote gebit dat hij draagt als Freddie Mercury. Maar al vrij snel is hij niet meer Malek de acteur, maar Freddie fucking Mercury. Uiteraard is het verhaal op veel vlakken geromantiseerd, maar dat neemt niet weg dat ik gedurende film een constante vibe van feel good had. Tel daarbij op dat je niet anders kan dan meezingen met de soundtrack van Queen en je hebt een meer dan oké biografische film over het leven van niet alleen Mercury, maar ook de rest van de band.

10. UPGRADE Upgrade bewijst dat je met een miniem budget ook een geloofwaardig en goede sci-fi film kan maken. De film speelt zich af in een toekomst waar technologie steeds meer de overhand neemt in het dagelijkse leven, inclusief het toepassen op je lichaam. Het verhaal is niet bijster bijzonder en deels voorspelbaar, maar de manier waarop de actie in beeld word gebracht, maakt deze film tot een van mijn favorieten hoort van dit jaar.

9. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Je weet dat het een goed filmjaar is, als een Star Wars film niet eens in mijn top 3 staat van dat jaar. De reacties na The Last Jedi waren nogal verdeeld, maar naar mijn mening is het juist een van de betere in de serie en als groot liefhebber van de wereld die George Lucas a long time ago bedacht, kon ik dan ook niet wachten op de film over de jongere jaren van Han Solo. Acteur Alden Ehrenreich had grote schoenen om te vullen, aangezien hij de iconische rol moest overnemen van legende Harrison Ford. Een haast onmogelijke opgave, maar Ehrenreich heeft heel goed gekeken naar de subtiele karaktertrekjes, manier van praten en lichaamstaal van Solo en deze zich eigen gemaakt. Ook multitalent Donald Glover is op dreef als de jonge Lando Calrissian. Solo: A Star Wars Story is misschien niet een van de beste in de serie, maar elke film die mij vermaakt in de bioscoop, is een verdomd prima film.

8. AQUAMAN Aquaman was jarenlang het lachertje onder de superhelden. Hij was blond, droeg een oranje pyjama en kon praten met vissen. Alles behalve stoer dus. Maar als men het woord stoer opzoekt, zal er vrij snel een foto opduiken van acteur Jason Momoa. Behalve dat hij charisma zweet, is hij ook nog eens een bonk van een vent inclusief litteken en lange manen die geblondeerd zijn door de zon. De grappen en grollen over Aquaman waren nergens meer te bekennen en na zijn rol in Justice League, mocht hij het nu in zijn eigen film proberen die geregisseerd is door James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring, Insidious). Wan weet de wereld van Atlantis magistraal neer te zetten en heeft een geweldig oog voor actie en dat betaalt zich uit in spectaculaire shots en stunts. Ook de andere leden van de cast genieten zichtbaar en Amber Heard laat zien dat ze misschien nog wel meer badass is dan de Koning van Atlantis.

7. DEADPOOL 2 Ryan Reynolds is geboren voor de rol van Deadpool en ik wil hem niets anders meer zien spelen in films. Laat hem de Oscars presenteren in zijn Deadpool-outfit, for God’s sake.

6. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT Wacht, Tom Cruise is 57 jaar oud? En doet zijn eigen stunts? Dat is... onmogelijk!

5. READY PLAYER ONE Het boek Ready Player One behoort al jaren tot mijn favorieten, omdat schrijver Ernest Cline zijn passie voor alles popculture niet onder stoelen of banken steekt. Het boek dat zich afspeelt in de nabije toekomst zit vol met verwijzingen naar films, games en muziek, vooral uit de tijd dat Cline is opgegroeid (de jaren ‘80). Het verhaal verwijst met enige regelmaat naar de films van Steven Spielberg, dus toen naar buiten kwam dat deze grootmeester het op zich ging nemen om het boek te verfilmen, kwam een droom uit voor de auteur en de fans van het eerste uur. Spielberg weet alle zogenaamde ‘easter eggs’ terug te brengen naar de juiste hoeveelheid en een spannende avonturenfilm af te leveren over een digitale wereld waar je maar wat graag zo nu en dan in zou willen ontsnappen.

4. INCREDIBLES 2 Het duurde maar liefst 14 jaar voordat er een vervolg kwam op het briljante eerste deel, maar deeltje twee gaat gelukkig meteen verder waar de familie Parr gebleven waren. Zoals we gewend zijn van Pixar zijn zij heer en meester in het brengen van animatie voor jong, maar ook zeker de oudere filmkijker. De vijand is in dit deel misschien niet zo sterk als in de eerste, maar gelukkig valt er nog genoeg te genieten voor de fans van de sympathieke superfamilie.

3. BLACK PANTHER

Stan Lee was behalve de man achter het bedenken van vrijwel elke superheld in de Marvel stal, ook iemand die zijn verhalen gebruikte om zaken uit de echte wereld aan de kak te stellen. Iron Man is lange tijd alcoholist geweest, de rode draad in de X-Men series is discriminatie en Black Panther strijd vaak niet alleen tegen bad guys, maar ook racisme. Een situatie die helaas nog steeds speelt in Amerika, waardoor een film over een zwarte superheld erg zeldzaam was, laat staan eentje waar de complete cast, van acteurs tot regisseur iets konden produceren waar de Afro-Amerikaanse gemeenschap trots op kan zijn. Gelukkig gebruikt regisseur Ryan Coogler niet de gehele film om deze boodschap over te brengen en laat hij vooral het eindresultaat voor zich spreken, met geweldige acteerprestaties, enerverende actiescènes en een geweldige soundtrack. Het is dan ook niet voor niks dat Black Panther record na record brak in 2018

2. SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Al sinds de aankondiging van het zien van de ‘hedendaagse Spider-Man’, Miles Morales in een eigen film, waren voor mij de verwachtingen hoog. Maar niets kon mij voorbereiden op wat voor huzarenstukje Sony Pictures Animation levert met Into The Spider-Verse. Niet alleen legt film de lat voor het genre tekenfilm naar nieuwe hoogtes door de baanbrekende animatie, het opent ook deuren voor de toekomst en wat er allemaal nog mogelijk is in de wereld van de superhelden. Dankzij een high-tech machine van Spidey-vijand Kingpin, ontstaat er een korte portaal tussen dimensies waardoor verschillende versies van Spider mannen en vrouwen in de wereld van nieuwkomer Miles Morales terecht komen. Wat volgt is een stripverhaal vlekkeloos vertaald naar film, met alle ingrediënten (actie, humor en drama) zorgvuldig verdeeld. Bepaalde scenes van deze film heb ik nu meerdere malen gezien en elke keer weer krijg ik een brok in mijn keel, van zowel trots als andere emoties door de manier waarop de film respect heeft voor het bronmateriaal. Er staat dat dit de nummer 2 is van mijn lijst, maar eigenlijk deelt Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse de eerste plek met...

1. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Marvel Studios heeft in tien jaar tijd een filmreeks geproduceerd die zijn weerga niet kent. Toen de eerste Iron Man in 2008 uitkwam, beloofde de scene na de aftiteling een groter plaatje en zou het het genre ‘superheldenfilms’ volledig op zijn kop zetten. Net als de comics al decennia lang doen, was de wereld en alle personages met elkaar verbonden en begon de Marvel Cinematic Universe vorm te krijgen. Na tien jaar en 20 films, kwam alles en iedereen samen in het derde deel van de Avengers reeks, Infinity War. Een film die naast alle bekende superhelden, vooral draait om de vijand, Thanos, die zijn visie over het universum wil bepalen met de almachtige Infinity Gauntlet. De fims over mijn jeugdhelden gingen er sowieso al in als zoete koek, maar mijn nerdhartje heeft tijdens het kijken van Avengers: Infinity War meerdere sprongetjes gemaakt en zorgde voor een domme grijns op mijn gezicht die de gehele speelduur niet meer van mijn gelaat af te branden was. Uiteraard was het haast een onmogelijke taak om al de acteurs bij elkaar te krijgen op hetzelfde moment, dus het vervolg werd dan ook meteen opgenomen, waardoor we nog maar een paar maanden hoeven te wachten op Avengers; Endgame. Weet iemand een adresje waar je je goedkoop kan laten invriezen tot april? Vraag ik voor een vriend.

Films die uitkomen in juli

The first purge 

The purge is een horrorfilm die bestaat uit vier delen. The purge is een soort nationale feestdag waarop alle misdaden voor 24 uur legaal zijn. Je mag dus mensen vermoorden, dingen stelen en je wordt niet opgepakt. Deze film gaat over het ontstaan van de purge en over de allereerste purge. In de andere drie films bestond de purge al, maar er werd nooit echt goed besproken hoe de purge is ontstaan.

Ant-man and the wasp 

Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) probeert balans te vinden in een bestaan als superheld (Ant-Man) en een vader voor zijn dochtertje. Hij wordt door Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) op een nieuwe missie gestuurd waarin hij moet samenwerken met Hope (Evangeline Lilly) aka The Wasp.

Hotel transylvania 3

Dit is alweer het derde deel uit de hotel transylvania series. In deze film gaan Mavis, Johnny, Dracula en alle andere monsters op vakantie. Ze hebben een cruiseschip afgehuurd. Op het schip ontmoet Dracula kapitein Erica. Hij wordt meteen verliefd op de kapitein, maar wat hij niet weet is dat Erica een monsterjager is. Het schip is een grote monsterval. Zal het Dracula lukken om zijn familie en vrienden te redden?

The darkest minds

The darkest minds is een film gebaseerd op de boeken vanAlexandra Backer. Er is een virus op aarde geland. Alle volwassenen gaan dood terwijl alle tieners speciale krachten krijgen. Elke kracht heeft zijn eigen kleur. De tieners worden vastgezet in kampen. Een groep tieners weet te ontsnappen en vormt een verzet tegen de kampen. Samengaan ze opzoek naar antwoorden en beginnen ze een nieuwe samenleving.

Christopher Robin 

Iedereen kent Winnie de Poe wel. Het is een grote gele beer. Hij leeft in een groot bos met al zijn vriendjes. Een van die vrienden is Christopher Robin. Hij komt elke dag langs om met Winnie en zijn vriendjes te spelen. Jaren later heeft Christopher een baan, een vrouw en kinderen. Het enige wat hij nog doet is werken en echt gelukkig is hij niet. Maar dan staat Winnie ineens voor zijn deur. Zal het Winnie lukken om Christopher te helpen?

Show dogs 

Er wordt plotseling een babypanda uit de dierentuin gestolen. Politiehond Max en politieman Frank worden gedwongen om samen te werken en undercover te gaan tijdens en van de meest exclusieve hondenshows van Las Vegas. Max schakelt de hulp van zijn hondenvrienden in en samendoen zij er alles aan om het mysterie rondom de diefstal op te lossen.
