Disturbing Behaviour (1998)

Disturbing Behaviour is a science fiction film so devoid of imagination you can predict beat-for-beat what its next move will be. Itâs the kind of film that leaves you wondering why it was even made.
When Steve Clark (James Marsden) moves to a new town with his family, he befriends misfits Gavin (Nick Stahl), U.V. (Chad E. Donella), and Rachel (Katie Holmes). Everything seems normal, except for a clique of students, the âBlue Ribbonsâ. They're all former troublemakers who suddenly changed into model students with radically different personalities and now have a tendency to become uncontrollably violent. Gavin insists he knows whatâs behind this strange group, but will he be able to convince his friends before they become just like them?
Seriously, why was this movie made? Itâs just a lame version of The Stepford Wives with teenagers. This means thereâs no satire or commentary, just a bunch of attractive young performers moving through a story thatâs been done a thousand times. Even Goosebumps and the 2002 remake of The Twilight Zone took a crack at it.
If you look at it as an "update" of a familiar story, it's still ineffective. You know right away that thereâs something foul going on because of a scene at the beginning of the film that shows the Blue Collars as pure evil. It destroys all possible questions as to whether or not something shady is actually going on and doesn't make sense either. This story canât be taking place in a big city so the idea that weird behaviour - stuff that escalates all the way up to murder - wouldn't be making headlines is inconceivable. I donât care how deep this conspiracy goes, someone would blow the whistle. There just arenât that many people going missing without someone noticing.
Setting the story in high school further hinders it. Disturbing Behaviour relies on tired clichĂ©s. I couldnât believe it when we were introduced to a group of nerds who actually brought their laptops to the cafeteria and all wore glasses, the goths, and every other clique ripped right out of a children's cartoon. Added to performances that range from ok to wooden, writing that makes the adults behaving as no human would, and youâve got a bad movie. The ending is particularly weak, with a âshocking twistâ that should have been left on the cutting room floor - along with the rest of this film.
Disturbing Behaviour is dull. It contains no twists, no new ideas. Itâs only exciting when itâs truly awful and most of the time it isnât even that. Itâs completely unremarkable, which is worse than being awful because at least then youâd remember it. (On VHS, March 28, 2016)

grantgust: I said goodbye to The Flash and my Flash family on Saturday. Very special day, with moments I will cherish for the rest of my life. My family got to see my last shot as The Flash - thatâs something I couldâve never imagined nearly 10 years ago when I started this journey. This first shot here is moments before my final set up(which was Flash running). I got a chance to thank the crew, who have worked longer hours than anyone can image and are the reason we were able to accomplish 184 episodes of The Flash. More than anything Iâll miss chatting and laughing in between takes(and sometimes during takes) with so many of them. Regardless of how challenging this journey was at times, I know I laughed every single day at work for the last 9 + years. I made lots of mistakes and did a lot of growing up on this journey. Forever grateful to @davidrapaport @ziking11 (#DavidNutter) #GeoffJohns #PeterRoth & @gberlanti for the opportunity of a lifetime - one I tried to never take for granted. An opportunity that I honestly didnât feel like I deserved at times. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you to the cast, old and new. Series regulars over the series and guest stars that popped in and out. Our guest stars are the unsung heroes of this show, that really made it special over the years. I made a lot of friends, and Iâm sure many of us will be in each others lives forever. THANK YOU to the fans who remained passionate about our show through 9 seasons. The show went through lots of changes but so many people stuck with us through it all. I look forward to hopefully continuing to meet some of you out in the world in passing and maybe even at conventions in the future. Thank you to @chipeyt (#ToddHelbing) for taking the reins and guiding us and to #EricWallace for getting us across the finish line. Honored to have had the chance to play this iconic character. I gave it absolutely everything I had. Thatâs all for now. âĄïžâ€ïž

Food and Climate Change Without the Hot Air

Back in 2009, I found the best technical book about climate change I've ever read: David McKay's SUSTAINABLE ENERGY WITHOUT THE HOT AIR:
https://memex.craphound.com/2009/04/08/sustainable-energy-without-the-hot-air-the-freakonomics-of-conservation-climate-and-energy/
McKay's book was a first for me: not a popular *science* book, but a popular *engineering* book, one that simply parameterized the way that we create and use energy, inviting the reader to draw their own conclusions about the tradeoffs we'd need to make to save our world.
McKay's figures included things like the total number of solar photons that strike the Earth, the total tide-stresses exerted by the moon, the maximum possible efficiency of a plane-shape cylinder through air, etc.
All of these represent the absolute best-case scenarios for various energy usage, production and storage problems, and anyone proposing a climate measure that exceeds these maximums is either ill-informed or actively lying.
That volume, with its lucid prose and superb data-visualizations, begat a whole series. In 2011, there was SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS WITH BOTH EYES OPEN by Julian Allwood and Jonathan Cullen.
https://memex.craphound.com/2011/11/17/sustainable-materials-indispensable-impartial-popular-engineering-book-on-the-future-of-our-built-and-made-world/
SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS adopted McKay's axiom of focusing on making small changes to large causes, rather than large changes to small causes.
Thus it zeroed in on the role that concrete and aluminium production play in emissions, after showing that all other material production amounts to a rounding error when compared to these two factors.
2015 saw the publication of URBAN TRANSPORT WITHOUT THE HOT AIR, which adopts the same "small changes to big causes" approach by focusing on private automobiles (and the urban layouts they demand) as the major driver of emissions.
https://memex.craphound.com/2015/12/03/urban-transport-without-the-hot-air-confusing-the-issue-with-relevant-facts/
Author Steven Melia explores the potential - and limits - of buses, bikes, walking, rail, etc, and the role that planning plays in changing private automobile usage, and makes an excellent case that urban design is more important than transit links for reducing car usage.
It's been half a decade since that last HOT AIR book, and now, fantastically, we have a new volume in the series: Sarah Bridle's FOOD AND CLIMATE CHANGE WITHOUT THE HOT AIR.
http://www.uit.co.uk/food-and-climate-change-without-the-hot-air
Bridle's volume is an important addition to the series, and uses a subtler knife - rather than opening with the small change in a big thing, she instead sketches out the emissions associated with a variety of prepared meals, organized by breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner.
All of this is framed around the idea that each human on Earth must rapidly draw down their food emissions to no more than 3kg/day if we're to meet the 1.5'C global warming target.
Bridle tots up a cup of tea, an apple, bacon, a sandwich, a steak, fish and chips, etc, and shows how they fit into this picture. As the reader is drawn through this narrative, the inescapable logic of energy narrows down to an inexorable conclusion: we eat too many animals.
Even leaving aside all questions of animal cruelty and human health, there's no escaping the fact that cow and sheep products, including milk, cannot be central to our diets if our species is to survive.
Other meats - poultry, fish, and pork - are vastly more sustainable, but still must be drawn down in our daily eating in favor of plant-based diets (Bridle's very good on explaining how different methods of animal rearing have different emissions profiles).
Moreover, a huge fraction of our food emissions are the result of the inefficiencies of home cooking: heating up your whole oven to cook a potato or a ready-meal massively increases the emissions relative to the same food at a restaurant where many items are cooked at once.
Finally, waste is a huge contributor to emissions, and household kitchens are the worst culprits by far: while industrial food prep offcuts are sold off as animal feed, household waste (including massive volumes of spoiled food) might end up as compost, or worse, landfill.
Like the other HOT AIR authors, Bridle's clear, nonthreatening, technical language, brilliant data visualizations, and example grounded in our daily experience make this a powerful read.
For all its gentle, moderate language, it comes to a devastating conclusion: our species' survival depends on eating more plants, with more centrally (and efficiently) prepared meals.
As with the other HOT AIR books, we're reminded that climate adaptation means significant changes to our lives - changes as profound as the industrial revolution. Bridle devotes significant language to discussing the social factors involved in such a shift.
It's hard to imagine a better addition to the HOT AIR cannon: a volume that boils a complex, urgent issue into a clear, undeniable set of parameters with equally clear conclusions.
If you want to experiment with Bridle's findings and methods, she's got an excellent "climate stack calculator" that lets you quickly assess the emissions associated with different food.
https://www.takeabitecc.org/calculator.html
There's also a free ebook edition of this book; go to whatever ebook store you use and you'll find a copy for $0.00 that you can "buy" and download.
(One more note before I close out: there's another HOT AIR volume, David Nutt's spectacular DRUGS POLICY WITHOUT THE HOT AIR, which had a new edition last year)
https://pluralistic.net/2020/03/02/be-the-helper/#davidnutt
(I didn't include it above because while it is an unmissable, essential volume, it doesn't deal with climate change)

British Doctors Urged To Embrace Cannabis Like Penicillin

The British governmentâs former drug tsar has called upon doctors to embrace cannabis like they did penicillin 70 years ago. Neuropsychopharmacology expert David Nutt served as chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs until he published a controversial paper in 2009. It declared that cannabis should be reclassified as it is a lot less harmful than tobacco and alcohol, and the resulting outcry led Home Secretary Alan Johnson to sack him. However, legal marijuana consumption has since become a lot more prevalent across the globe and it is now used to treat a wide range of medical conditions. That has vindicated Nuttâs stance and he was pleased to note that the UK government has now legalized medicinal cannabis consumption. However, the âcruel and ridiculousâ guidelines issued by the Royal College of Physicians and The British Paediatric Neurology Association make it very difficult for doctors to actually prescribe cannabis. Nutt acknowledged that the health sectorâs use of marijuana has been much slower than patients and parents had hoped. Writing in the British Medical Journal, he noted that penicillin was welcomed by British doctors 70 years ago, despite a lack of placebo-controlled trials of its effectiveness, because it filled a crucial clinical need. âIf todayâs medical profession could embrace cannabis in the same way as it did penicillin then the true value of this plant medicine should rapidly be realised,â said Nutt. He argued that cannabis is arguably the worldâs oldest medicine, with evidence of the Ancient Egyptians using it. He laid into the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency for justifying its existence by vilifying cannabis and likened the anti-cannabis stance to the Prohibition on alcohol. Nutt hopes to see more effective studies into the use of cannabis as a medicine, following a cancer research model. The British government has not published any official figures on how many patients have been prescribed with medicinal marijuana since it was legalized in November 2018, but it could well be fewer than 100. Several NHS Trusts have also refused to pay for cannabis treatments, even if they are prescribed by a consultant, as they are unconvinced that marijuana treatment represents good value for money for the NHS. This has stalled growth in a potentially huge market for the cannabis industry and campaigners are calling for a medicinal marijuana framework that better suits patientsâ needs. Read the full article

DC /20
