Starting off with glass. Here's an excerpt of my ongoing timeloop fic Minute Hand. This is I think three "loops" (chapters) from the last one I published (20).

Rinoa pushed her way into Timber’s oldest bar, which was noisy and fragrant with hops. There was an empty table, but Rinoa ignored it and made a beeline for the dark-stained wooden counter and sat on a barstool. Squall took the one beside her and she waved at the man behind the counter to summon him to their end. The bartender, Squall already knew, wasn’t too concerned about their ages. “Ah, if it isn’t the Princess of the Forest Owls,” the mustached man teased. “Haha, very funny Fred,” Rinoa said, rolling her eyes. “Can you get us a round? And keep them coming. I’ve had a long day.” Squall was surprised when the man brought them not only a pint of beer each, but also shots of something clear. Rinoa lifted her shot glass and smiled ruefully. “A toast—thank Hyne this day is over.” He must have made some kind of face when she said it, because she shrugged and threw it back before he could respond. Then she took his shot, too.

And now, yellow. This is the beginning of an unpublished oneshot I will probably never finish, PaintNite 😂 Eh, maybe I will finish it, now that I've gotten some of my headcanons out... Maybe it lessened my impulse to shove lore into something that is supposed to be lighthearted...

“Selphie, I really appreciate this but…” Rinoa said as she pushed her finger under the seal of the envelope. “There’s no such thing as a 7-month dating anniversary. You really didn’t have to get me anything.” Selphie beamed.  “You and Squall are two of my favorite people!” she exclaimed. “I just wanted to celebrate you! And look at the card! Isn’t it cute?”  Rinoa pulled out the white piece of cardstock. In elegant cursive, shiny black debossed letters spelled out, “There’s been buzz about your love!” The text sat beneath two cartoonish and happy bumble bees, along with yellow loopy flight lines and tiny hearts.  “Your bumble was meant to bee,” Rinoa read the inscription inside. “Okay, I have to admit, that is adorable.”

And rough. First off, looking for this word in my writing made me realize... I overuse "through" haha...

BUT! But, but, but!! This excerpt comes from my NEW yet unpublished multichapter project, where Laguna is working with a ghostwriter to write his autobiography. It's about Laguna's upbringing, his time in the army, his relationship with Raine, his work in Esthar... It's part headcanon with elements of the cut content of FFVIII. And it's scenes from Laguna's life interspersed with his first-person narrations - think The Princess Bride. The working title is The Luckiest Man in the World.

This excerpt, according to my (complete!) outline, is from Chapter 7, but I haven't written all the way to here yet. I was just really excited to think through Raine's life, so I wrote this chapter after writing the prologue haha

…And the next thing I remember is waking up in Winhill! “Wait… I thought you said you were stationed at the Centra Excavation Site. Isn’t Winhill on the Galbadian continent?” Oh, yeah, but it’s pretty much the closest place to Centra. Kiros and Ward kinda landed near the rocks, but I might have gotten caught in the surf or somethin’… Oh, is that a map? “Yes… President Loire, how long was your body out to sea?” Who knows! I know I was in pretty rough shape when I was found, I spent a couple of months barely conscious, a couple more recovering… What’s the face for? “I’m just surprised that… you survived.” Oh, yeah, it’s all Raine, really. She was amazing. She basically brought me back from the dead. “Well, okay… so you woke up in—” Wait, wait, wait, I gotta tell you about Raine, she’s really important! I think certain readers would prolly want to learn more about her, ya know? “But this is your autobiography…” Ahh, yeah, I know… Hey, I know we’re fallin’ a bit behind in the project and all, but like I said, she’s really important. I want her story somewhere, too. “Just… try to make it brief.”

Gira: Kotaro?

Kotaro: Gira-sama!

Gira: What are you doing here? In this universe?

Kotaro: I just wanted to inform you that some pirates might want to borrow or steal your powers to protect that other Earth.

Gira: What do you mean?

Kotaro: One of their abilities is to turn into other sentai.

GIra: I’ll be sure to inform everyone of that.

Kotaro: Okay, I’ll head back to my universe now.

Kotaro: I just took a quick detour to your planet.

I would be surprised if the Gokaiger hadn't turned up by now demanding the King Ohger's Grand Power... except in canon Earth was also conquered by Dugded and co (by proxy, but still) without much resistance. If the Gokaigers did exist in canon I don't think Earth would've fallen as easily, especially since their existence would by extension imply all the other Sentai also exist. As it stands though, as far as we know the only ones who stood between Earth and Dugded were the Kyouryugers.

And while you can say that it had to be them because Dugded revived their enemy (the Deboss) specifically, we know that if the planet was under a dire threat all the Sentai would unite, as seen in the Legendary Battle. So... yeah... maybe as far as canon is concerned, the only other Sentai in this universe is the Kyouryugers.

Of course the Donbrothers crossover could dispute this, but then that would raise the question of where the fuck they or any other Sentai were when Earth got taken over by the revived Deboss Army. It would be pretty pathetic if they had 45+ Sentai teams except the Kyouryugers captured just to wave away that plot hole.

Happy Summer Solstice!

Today (June 21st) is the official start of Summer, in the Northern Hemisphere at least!  To celebrate, here is Debo Vacance from 2013′s Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger!

He is the monster of Summer Vacation and his entire plan was to never let Summer end so everyone would be on eternal vacation, including our heroes!  It almost worked!

So, enjoy your Summer!  Stay Cool if you can and have fun!  

Oh and here is his initial character design!

I find it really fun that his eye-stalks are palm trees, there is a tiny sun umbrella in the middle of his head, he has ice cream ending in a cone for one arm and beach ball, coconut (with a twisty straw coming out of it) and a lobster claw for the other and his legs are made of water with fish in it ending with coral for his feet!  The toppers though are the life preserver around his waist and the surfboards for shoulder armor! He is the embodiment of Summer fun!

Peggy unwrapped the string from around the folder and fished out one of the two sets of dog tags in it, double-checked that she had the right one, and held it out to Steve.  “Since you seem to have misplaced yours, Captain.”

He reached for them and she turned her hand over and spilled them into his palm rather than touch him, the chain coiling around the little slips of debossed metal.  ROGERS, STEVEN G – They weren’t identical to his previous dog tags, since those had been issued in 1943 after he had been commissioned and the U.S. Army had changed the format again the previous March; the Americans couldn’t seem to decide what order to put their soldiers’ names in.  Those hadn’t been the ones he had been issued with when he enlisted, either, since between enlisting in June 1943 and rejoining the SSR that November the Americans had finally realized that having their soldiers’ home addresses on their identification tags might be a bad idea.  His serial number had changed when he had been commissioned, too; Senator Brandt hadn’t bothered with that, but Colonel Phillips had.

Steve poked at them with one finger and said dryly, “Oh, they got my religion right this time.” When Natasha’s eyebrows went up, he clarified, “The first two sets had a P instead of a C.  Not that it matters that much, since my dad was Church of Ireland and Ma had her problems with the church because they weren’t too happy about her marrying a Protestant, but –”  He shrugged.

“The Army didn’t like Captain America being Catholic?” Natasha said, sounding bemused.

Steve shook his head. “They were just wrong; it happens all the time.  You’d be surprised how many guys have the same serial number.  I don’t think my religion ever really came up, since Bucky’s the one who cares about going to Mass, not me; when we were growing up Ma hardly ever went other than Christmas and Easter, so it was always Bucky’s family taking me.  Or he used to care, anyway, I don’t know if he’s been since –”  He stopped abruptly and busied himself clasping the ball chain around his neck, tucking the tags under his shirt.

Deboss Army

An army created by Deboss, an entity that came to earth to destroy life 65000000 years ago and was sealed by the efforts of Torin and the Zyudnryu. Since then across the centuries the Deboss Army has revived and attempted to harvest emotions to bring about Deboss' total rebirth.

Zorima are soldiers born from Deboss' cells, forming the backbone of the army. When facing giant opponents a number can merge together to form a Giant Zorima, which tend to fight in pairs.

The Zorima serve under Debo Monsters, each of which aims to inflict certain emotions onto humanity to gather their master Knight's emotion to revive Deboss. While the majority serve the Knights, the Zetsumates trio, Debo Hyogakki, Debo Viruson and Debo Nagareboshi predate the Knights and were instrumental in eliminating the dinosaurs.

Cambrimas are elite soldiers, created by Chaos using all 3 emotions together.

100 Faced Hight Priest Chaos is the leader of the Deboss forces, acting in his master's stead until he can be revived, he has been active since the original invasion and has a long history with Torin.

Knight of Rage Dogold is first known to have been active 400 years ago, fighting against Utsumemimaru, this battles ended with him possessing the samurai's body, enabling him to control Pteragordon when it was reawakened in the present day until the samurai freed himself. Following this his obsession is with finding a new permanent body for himself.

Knight of Sorrow Aigallon was the first Knight revived in the present day, responsible for the death of Ian's best friend, leading the Kyoryuger to have a personal vendetta against him.

Knight of Joy Candelira is the last of the current trio of Knights, gathering a more positive emotion means her schemes are often less harmful than her compatriots. She has a keen interest in singing, more than once disguising as an idol.

Spy of Fun Luckyuro is Candelira's subordinate, assisting in her schemes, and launching a handful of her own. She possesses a watering can containing Restoration Water used to revive and grow any Deboss it is poured on. Taking an interest on the human world, she becomes a fan of the romance manga Love Touch.

Dark Species Deboss is the Army's creator and true leader, having launched the original invasion of earth. Since his original defeat his physical form has been trapped as the Frozen Castle where the Deboss Army makes it's base.

last night I was thinking about how I feel like sentai villain groups haven’t been truly memorable recently so then I was like “hm which villains do I consider to be memorable?” and the answer is

volt: their friends did that. I love that the villain generals went to college with the main characters becoming evil and I especially love that they’re all somewhat sympathetic due to being manipulated by their boss dr bias

vyram: they all have their own plotlines, as bad and soap opera-y as they might be. also they all have at least one moment that humanizes them even if they go back to being THE WORST after it (radiguet.)

bowzock: ok I just think they’re memorable bc of zonette. but I also like how totally pathetic they all are and I think richhiker is a great villain as well

londarz: what I like about them is they aren’t motivated by gathering dark energy for their evil lord or anything like that. they just straight up do crimes to get money

orgs: I dont give a SHIT about the highness duke orgs but I love yabaiba and tsuetsue. since they’re basically the only villain generals in gaoranger they get a lot of screentime and remind me of anime team rocket in that they’re goofy comic relief villains you still feel bad for at times

jakanja: listen I hate satarakura but he sure is memorable. furabeejo and wendinu too. I like them bc a lot of them get along with each other and seem to be buddies which is cute

evolien: bc abarekiller is there. also yatsudenwani. and actually I really like jeanne and reje as well. it’s just that michaela and voff are boring

infershia: I dithered about them bc the only ones I really care about are vancuria and sphinx but I think they are the most successful example in the franchise of having waves of villains. you have like the branken arc, the meemy arc, and finally the gods of hell arc

rin ju ken: love rio and mele to death but the main strength of them is they directly parallel the gekis in their training but while the adults in the gekis’ lives support them the adults in rio and mele’s lives are using them

vaglass: enter and escape good. enter likes to scheme and dress up more than he likes to fight and escape loves her guns. its equality

deboss: ok just bc of candelira and luckyuro. but I like aigallon too. and their designs are just so fun and colorful despite them being villains

shadow line: they all look SO good. gritta is there. what else is there to say

but this list leaves out villain groups I know to be memorable from shows I haven’t seen like bandora’s gang. so I will make a quick list calling out villain groups I think are boring or at least don’t stand out to me: negative syndicates, gaiark, deathgaliens, ganglers, gedoshu, gouma, kibaoni army, nezirezia, jark matter, zangyack, alienizers (although they arent really a group), warstar yuumajuu AND matrintis, baranoia, druidon (so far)

Jyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: Brave Forever It's pretty hard to deny we're living in some pretty incredible times as Toku fans. Ultraman is in its longest continuous broadcast period ever, even if it is only having new shows during the latter half of the year, it's working great. We're still getting Space Sheriff Next Generation material coming out this year. Sure it's V-Cinema rather than shows but the format is working. Both Rider and Sentai are including more material than ever before, with post series V-Cinemas for both being the norm, and each having their winter crossovers (this year's Sentai crossover notwithstanding) to give us something great at the end. We've consistently been surprised by returning actors for the spring films (regardless of your views of their quality) and their spin-offs with Red One, GoseiRed, GokaiRed, Rider 1, X-Rider, ZX, Decade, Faiz, half of W, Black, Zeronos, Blade, Garren, Chalice, Leangle, KyoryuGold, Zolda, Aoninger, Beet Buster, Baron, Marika, Another Agito all having their actors at least return in voice for the spring crossovers while they lasted. In projects that weren't part of the inter franchise crossovers we saw the unexpected but welcome returns of 5 Zyurangers, 2 Abarangers, all 5 Hurricangers, one of them twice, NinjaRed, Jiraiya, Accel, all of the Dekarangers twice, Ouja, and, the one I wouldn't have believed would happen if you'd told me it was coming a month beforehand, all 6 Gokaigers. But there's one return that just happened which I think I can honestly say none of us saw coming. And in a way, it was the most likely to happen. Since in a way, it never really left. Jyuden Sentai Kyoryuger was the last Sentai I managed to keep up with as it aired. That isn't anything against Toqger, Ninninger, Zyuohger, and definitely not Kyuranger, but somehow that's what happened. By comparison, I kept up with Ultraman and Rider week by week no matter what, save for the latter half of Ghost/the early half of Orb, where real life caused me to kind of run away from pretty much all my regular online activity at the time for a couple of months. It's remained probably more popular than any of the series that followed except Kyuranger, although I can't guarantee that as I kind of try to avoid seeing too much fan opinions since it turns to vitriol at the drop of a hat. Sure people had problems with Kyoryuger, although even those who hated the show's Daigo focus seemed to hate Takaharu for it more despite the fact he was by a huge extent the lesser offender. Probably more upsetting to most people was the out of nowhere romance between Daigo and Amy in the last three episodes, which had no build up beyond a minor plot point in a single episode 30 episodes earlier, especially bizarre given Sanjou has written far better handled romances in W and Drive, and Daigo had an established love interest he plainly actually liked (people will also tell you Amy had more chemistry with literally every other member of the team). But enough about that. Over the course of a year we fell in love with these 14 men, women, ghosts and bird people, and their 11 dinosaur partners. The movie managed to actually be important to the overall story in some way. Heck, it was the last time the movie mecha actually appeared in the show (and not just for a one time appearance either) with subsequent movie mech being limited to a scene in the crossover or appearing in the V-Cinema. But eventually the series came to an end, Deboss was destroyed, leaving us a plot thread for the Vs film to come and a chance for some of the characters we'd come to love to show up again, and we turned to waiting for the V-Cinema and the Vs movie. The V-Cinema had a pretty interesting concept, placing the action 100 years in the future with the team's descendants struggling against a new Deboss Army. There was part of the story I would have preferred not to happen but it was good and just genuinely a lot of fun. It also turned out we were also getting another Toei Hero Next project, the 4th and currently final one, as a vehicle for the main cast, happening to feature several other Sentai actors in other roles. We're the Bounty Hunter Troupe managed to be a fun if very Kyoryuger referential story set in the same world with the cast being a group who used scripts devised by one of them to help them Bounty Hunt, enabling the actors to portray characters who were very much different to their first familiar roles. Most of us watched it the once if that and then forgot it to look to other things. It must have done pretty well though since it got two stage sequels. The first came out 18 months after the original, and featured only half the original Kyoryuger cast, the rest of the team was filled up by Blue Buster, GokaiGreen and Toq5, playing different characters with their own quirks different to the roles they were replacing. A talk show after each performance had different guests on different nights, including GokaiRed, Toq2, and the three Kyoryuger who weren't in the play, depending on the night. 14 months later another stage happened, with the same cast as the previous just with GokaiGreen replaced by KiNinger. Both also featured other Sentai actors in other roles in the plays. I feel like even if the original Toei Hero Next film didn't fly under our radars, the two stage shows definitely did. What didn't however was the amazing news last year of Kyoryuger Brave. It may not have been the best developed story, considering it amounted to around 2 hours and that's including 12 uses of both the OP and the ED, but the designs were nice, especially the modified Zyudenryu, and the changes made to create the Neo Deboss were also cool. In fact sadly, I imagine most feel the biggest issue with the series was the actors, though K can't be sure of that. Still it was a fun rise. And now in what's possibly more unexpected than even Brave, episode 33.5, with all 6 main actors returning to play a simple non-plot intrusive story, to promote a mobage of all things. It's nothing special but it is fun and if you have a spare half hour go watch it. It has a new Debo Monster and all (unless it's really well modified) which is incredible. I will not be surprised if this is the last we see of several of these actors in their Kyoryuger roles, though it's heartening to see them all willing to return after so long. Kyoryuger has certainly enjoyed a life well beyond its expected length, and that's pretty Brave.
