The pair-ent trap

Part 1

“You wanna know the *real* difference between us?” -Hallie speaking to Annie

Just like in the parent trap where Hallie and Annie join their photos together to find out that they are related, being able to see both sides of Taylor Swift’s story at once is the key to seeing the bigger picture. The only difference is that she’s separated the halves to distract us from seeing that the two halves of the story belong together.

Warm and cool

The cardigan and willow music videos were the key to understanding this concept of pairs. They end and begin with the cabin in the woods and wearing the same folklore cardigan. Referring to folklore and evermore as folkmore just emphasises that this pattern of pairs extends beyond the two music videos.

Day and night

Taylor revealed at one point that the lover era was initially going to be called daylight. This didn't end up happening, but was an intentional reference so that we could see the connection between the lover and midnights eras. This becomes even more evident with the similarities between the ‘lavender haze’ and ‘miss Americana and the heartbreak prince’ sets on the eras tour.

Light and dark

In contrast, the tortured poets department release day was when we got two halves of one set of pairs within two hours of each other. I can't help but wonder if the anthology was designed to be a Trojan horse that would keep everyone eager for more without realising that Taylor's story, or era of eras, was already complete.

Past and present

Over the last few years the rerecords have added a mature voice to the older versions of fearless, speak now, red and 1989. This has been accomplished through the addition of the vault tracks, new artwork and rewritten prologues.

Debutation

All that’s left now is debut and reputation. Combining these two together creates debutation, the eighth pair. I’m still hopeful that we’ll get to hear a more mature version of debut, but putting them side by side has been helpful to see their role in the bigger picture. They represent the beginning and ending of Taylor’s time at her old record label and also reflect the growth she had experienced as an artist during that time. Yet despite any changes, the essence of who Taylor is underneath still remains. These two albums represent who she is on the inside and the outside. Not re-recording them would be an act of defiance to declare that Taylor’s name and reputation are not for sale.
