not to dox myself on tumblr, but as a certified Edinburgh Lass, the Department Q adaptation on netflix is fucking everything. apart from a couple minor things like bus routes and street layouts, most of the details were pretty on point. also the show is just class. detective shows are like- like the opposite of kryptonite for me. they keep me going. without them i would probably shrivel and die. but scottish detective shows?! now you're talking.

Carl: "Wow. I feel like we made a real breakthrough."
You can feel the sarcasm coming off Carl in waves - like a tsunami. But despite his attitude - he IS talking and unloading his frustrations in these sessions.
Matthew Goode slipping on his cranky pants again as Carl in Dept. Q on Netflix now.

Yep - Netflix take note. We need more of this dynamic. Second season please.

Been thinking about Carl and Akram's dynamic (someone should definitely make a gifset of them sharing a look because there's A LOT of these tiny moments between them), and it struck me that whenever Carl's putting on a show and he's really bordering on losing his shit, Akram's always very cautious. He always keeps an eye on him, reacts to Carl's movements and tone (seriously, Alexei Manvelov's sublte phsyical acting is phenomenal), ready to jump in. Always trying to keep him in line, warning him not to cross the line which then Carl ofc ignores with the most bombastic side-eye.
And I was thinking: why would Akram care if Carl did damage and/or got himself suspended for his behaviour? It is obvious that he is a caring person, he is always nice and polite (I mean who brings biscuits to a workplace they want to apply to? No matter how much I want a position, I never do that!) He cares about Carl and other people's well-being, obviously, but what if it's much more than that? We don't know much about his past life, we've got glimpses. We can put together a vague picture, take a (not so) wild guess, but that's about it. And yeah, I know the books reveal Assad's past, but the show hasn't so it's still too early to jump to conclusions.
Anyways, what if – based on what we know of him so far – Akram reacting to Carl's impulsive behaviour and wanting him to be in line isn't just him trying to protect Carl, but it's also some sort of muscle memory? What if in the very "rough" place in Siria (be it a bad neighbourhood or line of duty) lashing out and acting impulsively got you into trouble? What if acting the way Carl did had far greater consequences back home so Akram being cautious stems from that? You need to be level-headed, you need to be in control in order to survive because acting recklessly results in something far worse than what the repercussions had been for Carl?
Anyways, just thinking thoughts. I really hope the show will survive long enough for us to learn about Akram's background. Netflix, you have ONE job.

“I firmly believe that those who commit violent crime don't ever truly get away with it. um, the court might set them free, but be it conscience, karma, or the universe, they are, ultimately, one way or another, punished for what they've done”
