I had a bit of an argument with someone long time back on this topic, and js wanted to know your opinions on this.
So, Yudhishthira has 2 wives, Droupadi and Devika, both of whom were princesses before marriage. Now, neither of the two are rulers in their own right, they are just consorts. The thing is, we know that Yudhishthira was Emperor, and Droupadi was the Empress. I am not very well versed in this topic, but I think mostly there is only one Empress, or Patrani, which is the primary consort of the Emperor, right?
The argument came in the topic that I personally felt that ok, Devika is not the Empress, but surely she had the title of QUEEN, at least? Her husband is a King and Emperor, and despite not being the Empress, I am sure the wives of Emperors who were not the chief consort, still had the title of Queen. The person who I had an argument with said that Devika was called Princess, surely, which kinda irked me, since Yudhishthira is not a prince anymore, he is a ruler.
If Devika is just a princess, then there is literally no difference between her, the wife of the ruler, and the other Pandava wives, like Subhadra, Valandhara, Karenumati etc., whose husbands were just princes, and not Kings.
What do you think?

You've made posts on all the other pandawives, make a devika one as well na! I love those posts and she's the only one missing in that series atp... 🥺🥺🥺
Devi has honestly given me a hard time in fleshing out her character, so that's why I've taken so long to do a post for her. 😅
Also, a lot of her background is inspired by SamratVallabhaa's book on Devika, because I read it during my formative years in engaging with the Mahabharata. (I recommend reading it if anyone wants a fic rec! It's very well-researched and well-written.)
But yes, here's what she's like for me:
She's an incredibly independent woman, and doesn't usually like relying on others to do things she could do herself.
Why? For multiple Reasons, but it boils down to her contentious relationship with her maternal family. I headcanon her as the eldest daughter (so yes, Eldest Daughter syndrome) of Govasena and his wife. Her mother died when she was young, so she didn't really have a proper maternal influence, and her father wasn't the greatest dad. She was essentially raising herself and her younger brother Shaivya at the same time.
Also, she has a cousin Kotikasya who's a staunch follower of Jayadratha. And Jayadratha kind of becomes the overlord of Shivi when they're all older. (He's mentioned to have been the ruler of Sindhu-Sauvira and Shivi, so he must have conquered Shivi.) So there's plenty tension there. She couldn't trust Kotikasya to not sell her out to Jayadratha. Or marry her off.
And that's why she becomes very proficient in warfare. She specializes in close-quarter fighting though, because those are the scenarios she'd need the most expertise to get out of. She's probably one of the better warriors out of the PandavaPatnis.
So: she's very pragmatic and practical. Blunt when she needs to be, enfolding herself in lies when needed. Very sensitive to changes in others' moods, and adapts herself very quickly.
Devi and Yudhi, I'd say, "loved" each other for a long time before they got married. In my arbitrary ordering of the Pandavas' marriages, they get married somewhere in the early years of Arjuna's exile. So kind of late.
Also what I think their love was like. A slow blooming. I put quotes up there, because I don't think they truly knew each other until after their marriage.
They heard of each other when they were young, and formed impressions of each other that were somewhat accurate and somewhat not. Devi, I think, liked Yudhi because he was the polar opposite of her relatives. (I have a whole tale for their developing relationship but I won't get into it here.)
Govasena wasn't very keen on the idea of a svayamvara for Devika. But he organised one regardless, although it was heavily implied (read: threatened) that Devi ought to marry Jayadratha or someone in his circle. Devi, obviously, threw everyone off by choosing Yudhi. Kotikasya nearly made a scene but was dissuaded.
I realised I haven't talked about Shaivya enough. He's her darling, because she raised him from almost birth. He's the only one with enough sense in Devika's maternal family. They are very close, and he cried when she left to Indraprastha. They write to each other often and try to see each other but that's not as common.
Devika learns to rely on others when she lives in Indraprastha. Her independent streak sometimes causes friction between her sisters-in-law when teamwork is needed. It takes her some time but she learns.
I think she manages some of the law and justice issues that aren't so important as to demand Yudhishthira's attention. Yudhi looks to her for pragmatic advice, but he works with Krishnaa a lot more often, which leaves her insecure sometimes. Especially when the Rajasuya is rolling around.
She and Yudhi often spend their time playing board games in their free time. It's Yudhi's favorite way to unwind and Devi has a good head for these games. There are days when they don't, though, and just talk about various things.
She doesn't take compliments to heart very easily, and it's only Yudhishthira's consistent efforts that open her up to soft words.
They have a tendency to have long-winded conversations into the night. Which throws their sleep schedule off and Krishnaa scolds the both of them. (Yaudheya grows up falling asleep to their conversations.)
But they also can argue. And the arguments sting a lot, because Yudhi is used to setting rules for others, being the oldest brother. And Devi has a tendency to push and push until she gets her side known, or might agree in words but go behind his back to do things he doesn't approve of.
They help each other with their Eldest Child issues.
During the exile, she goes back to stay in Shivi. Those thirteen years are hard on her, because she's raising her son alone in a hostile environment. She gets fed up within four years and moves herself and Yaudheya to another city away from Govasena and Kotikasya.
She clams up again, and a whole lot of the progress she'd made in Indraprastha with her family is undone. I don't think she ever gets back to "normal", really. Even after the war.
As all parents do, she makes mistakes with Yaudheya. But Yaudheya is wise for his age (just like his father) and understands. He sees his uncle Kotikasya's attempts to sway him to the Kaurava side and detests them all for it.
Hmm. I think that's mostly it. I originally made this a lot longer because I talked about how Devika and Yudhishthira's relationship grew. But I'll save that for another time.

Another big collection of sketches sent unto me by @guildwuff2 over time of our OCs together. In this case, our Charr couple consisting of Valora (purple mane, mine) and Devika (teal mane, wuff's). What happens when a gladium and Olmakhan who both left home find each other out in the world? Good times!
A couple tender moments, Valora learning to swim, a couple sketches of with their adoptive daughter (Olwyn), and Valora being a swooning mess at her pretty partner during a festival.

Headcanon #2
Devika is the first co-wife that Draupadi meets, and is unsure on how to behave with.
Draupadi hasn't lived around women her age much, except for perhaps, Satyabhama, her newfound friend. She doesn't know what to expect from a co-wife, but seeing Govind's wives gives her some hope.
Will Devika like Draupadi? What if she is angry at the fact that she has a co-wife, much higher in status and power?
Ah, Shikhandi always told Draupadi that she had the habit of being worrisome.
Devika liked Draupadi well enough to joke with her once in a while, or braid her and put flowers in it, or go on picnics together, just the two of them, making Bheem unintentionally jealous.
Devika likes Draupadi well enough to swaddle her children when Draupadi sobs about being a bad mother.
Devika likes Draupadi well enough to calm her fiery nature down.
Devika likes Draupadi well enough to apply medicines on her bruised arms, after she returns from Hastinapur.
Devika likes Draupadi well enough, to hold her as she cries, after immersing her sons' ashes in the water.
(I decided to write on this very underrated duo. I personally feel that Draupadi and the Pandava wives who resided in Indraprastha were definitely close-)

Look at this absolute dream of a woman!!!
Please don't let this incredible woman lose. She deserves to be in the next round!

Propaganda
Deborah Kerr (Bonjour Tristesse, An Affair to Remember, The King and I)— For several decades she held the record for most Oscar nominations without a win (6 in total), and she was a prolific leading lady throughout the 40s and 50s. She's best known today for the romance An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant, and as the governess in The King and I. Many people have this erroneous perception of her as extremely prim, proper, and virginal, but this could not be further from the truth. When she first came to Hollywood under MGM she was typecast into boring decorative roles, but broke sexual boundaries for herself and Hollywood generally in From Here to Eternity, when she made out (horizontally!) with Burt Lancaster (on top of him!) in the famous Beach Scene. She went on to play many sexually conflicted women, a character type that would define most of her post- Eternity work. She continued to break Hays Code boundaries with Tea and Sympathy, which addresses homosexuality/homophobia head-on, and even did a topless scene in The Gypsy Moths 1969!! One of the only classic stars to do so. She deserves a more nuanced and frankly a hotter legacy than she currently has!!!
Devika Rani (Achhut Kanya)—She was grandniece of Rabindranath Tagore (laureate). She was sent to boarding school in England at age nine and grew up there. After completing her schooling, she joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the Royal Academy of Music to study acting and music, at a time when aristocratic women did not enter showbiz. She studied filmmaking in Berlin. It is well known that she underwent training at the UFA Studios in the art and technique of acting under Eric Pommer, and other aspects of film production including costume and set designing and make-up, under eminent directors like GW Pabst, Fritz Lang, Emil Jannings and Josef von Sternberg. She is also reported to have worked with Marlene Dietrich. She had a multi-faceted personality and took on many responsibilities of film production at Bombay Talkies, a studio that she co-founded with Himanshu Rai in Mumbai in 1934. She often took care of hair and make up, supervised set design and editing, scouted for new talent and mentored them. She was the face of Bombay Talkies, and also the reason behind the political and financial backing the studio received, at a time when even women from red light districts refused to work as actresses. She was the first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, when it was instituted in 1970.
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Deborah Kerr:

I think she was one of my first crushes before I realised I was bi in The King and I when I watched it as a kid honestly. The kissing scene in From Here to Eternity is iconic for a reason. Actually tried to learn the accents for the characters she was playing if they weren't English which is more than pretty much anyone else was doing then. Played very restrained characters who frequently seemed to be desperate not to be so restrained. Did horror movies without venturing into hagsploitation tropes. Gave Marni Nixon the credit she deserved for her share of the singing in The King and I.
Anne Larsen is a peak late 1950s bisexual with big MILF energy. Have you seen the behind the scenes pics of her wearing a suit?? Have you????? Vote Deb as Anne Larsen.
Nominated for an Oscar six (6) times and never won, but besides her having actual talent (hot), and besides her looking Like That (very hot, also beautiful), she was always playing women who are, like, crazy repressed. Which makes it fun and easy for me to read these characters as queer. Icon!!!! You know what's hot? Playing ambiguously gay in vintage Hollywood.

Her face and talent and body, yes, ofc, duh. But also!!! Her HANDS!!!! I may be but a simple lesbian, but she is the best hactor (hand actor) that ever lived and that's HOT! For propriety's sake I feel I must redact a large portion of my commentary on this subject. Anyway. She's hot in her most famous roles (mentioned above), and also some of her sexiest hacting is on display in An Affair to Remember (her hand on the bannister when Cary Grant kisses her off-screen??? HELLO???), Tea and Sympathy (when she's trying to persuade Tom not to go out and she keeps flexing her hands like she wants to reach out to him but can't??? ALLY BEHAVIOR! WE STAN!), and The Innocents (which opens and closes with extended shots of her hands bc director Jack Clayton was also an ally and he did that for ME). Much of her appeal also lies in the fact that she often played deeply repressed characters and you know what's hot? When those uptight characters finally unravel. It's sexy. It's cathartic. It's erotic. Plus, she's beautiful to look at in both black & white and technicolor, and the more of her films you see, the more you can't help but fall in love!
Literally is in thee most famously sexy scene of all time (or maybe just during the hays code era which is what we're talking about HELLO), which is the beach scene with Burt Lancaster in from here to eternity. To quote a tumblr post of a screen capture of a tweet of a video of joy behar on the view: "y'know, there used to be movies where they were kissing on the beach... From Here to Eternity. They're kissing-- Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr are Kissing on the Beach and then the WAVES crash!! You know exactly what they did!"
She might have a reputation of being chaste and virginal or whatever, but we all know it's the quiet ones who are certifiable FREAKS
Devika Rani:
Achhut Kanya (1936) is the only one of hers I've seen but hot DAMN
