"Protect the Colors of the Wind" Macaws are one of the most colorful birds in the world and represent grace and ease and are considered a messenger of the gods and ancestors. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) “Red List” classified the Blue-throated Macaw as “Critically Endangered”

Interesting Facts About Macaws

Macaws are monogamous, fall in love, and mate for life—Macaws reach breeding age at ~3-4 years old, pick a partner, and stay together for life. Macaw pairs spend much time together, sharing food, enjoying mutual grooming, and caring for their young macaw chicks. They also fly together–close to each other with their wings almost touching.

Macaws can live up to 100 years—Macaw’s average lifespan in the wild is around 60 years. The lifespan can even extend to 80 years or even up to 100 years. Macaws, kept as a pet, are often known to outlive their owners.

Macaws can mimic human speech—Macaws can’t precisely talk but can mimic human speech and other environmental sounds. Macaws are intelligent and highly social birds with a well-developed vocal learning center in their brain. Macaws are naturally gifted to make and respond to definite sounds made by their family and flock.

They Have Long Tail Feathers—Macaws contain variable bright color combinations, such as red and green and blue and gold, sporting beautiful long graceful tail feathers. They are built to fly through forest trees with an efficient body, tail shape, and wings that don’t flap intensely. During landing, macaws drop their tail and feet downward and their wings as brakes.

Macaws Have Gripping Toes—Macaws have long toes with sharp claws with their first and fourth toes pointing backward. With these gripping agile toes, they latch onto branches, grasp things, and examine items.

Macaws Eat Clay—Macaws mainly consume nuts, seeds, fruits, flowers, and leaves. Most Macaw species contain extremely powerful beaks with which they can open hard nutshells. Macaws congregate clay licks in the wild, particularly in the Amazon rainforest, and feed on clay. Research theories propose that Macaws obtain required minerals and vitamins and cleanse toxins consumed through their seed and fruit-filled diet.
