Last night the Count asked me in the suavest tones to write three letters, one saying that my work here was nearly done, and that I should start for home within a few days, another that I was starting on the next morning from the time of the letter, and the third that I had left the castle and arrived at Bistritz. I therefore pretended to fall in with his views, and asked him what dates I should put on the letters. He calculated a minute, and then said:— "The first should be June 12, the second June 19, and the third June 29."

Dracula's goal with these letters is multifaceted. Of course, they're being used again as a way to psychologically torment Jonathan. He's being made to feel complicit again, being forced to cover up what he's now certain will be his own eventual murder. The deadline also gives him something to dread, but at the same time suggests that if he plays along he might survive until then, adding incentive to obey longer.

This also is just a straightforward coverup. Jonathan's previous dictated letter suggested he would be leaving the castle around June 12. So the first one of these picks up the false narrative then, stretching out the time even a little longer. The second finally has him leaving. And the third, a few days later, places him in Bistritz. This trip took him only a day or two on his journey into the castle, but in this version it takes him about nine days. Still, it places him a decent distance away from the castle, and in what Jonathan earlier described as "a fairly well-known place," one that seems to mark a sort of border. Jonathan considers it "practically on the frontier", while this is where Dracula chose to welcome him "to the Carpathians." So, by placing his last letter there, Jonathan is shown to have left Dracula's territory. He's not too close to home, but he's back amongst other people, and presumably will leave from Bistritz to continue heading west very shortly. This makes his disappearance lose both geographic and causal links with Dracula, and in fact places the blame most likely on other people, who perhaps robbed and killed this traveler.

i wonder if the rise in people asking AI (and specifically thigns like chatgpt) to do things is related at all to the fact that search engines have gotten so crazy useless that even if you "know how to use them" it can still be hard to find what youre looking for. i wonder if people could use natural language when addressing a search engine if that would help at all. im thinking about this cuz i fucked up a cake earlier and im wondering if making a simple syrup would fix anything but i was trying to figure out how i might type that into a search engine to get results and i feel like if i could just type "i overbaked a cake! not by much, but by enough. will brushing it with simple syrup make any difference?" into google and get peoples reddit posts matching the concept of "slightly overbaked cake how to make more moist" that would be easier than having to puzzle out what search query will bring me to what im looking for

didn’t want to put this directly on lrb and derail it but I think when people reject the general idea of The Cloud there’s an underlying anxiety about privacy & security that’s like, totally fair. google classroom assignment generation etc. the good news is there are privacy-respecting storage options!! the bad news is that they are rarely free or foolproof. the more-good-news is that the learning curve is pretty doable with a couple days of youtube university and you can at least do like, some level of damage control with the free tiers lol

NPR had an article this evening that was an interview with a Harvard professor discussing the rise of American authoritarianism, and they asked him what parallels he saw to the role of Elon Musk in the government, and he said he saw no parallels, it was completely unprecedented and he didn't know what would happen

And I thought, I know what a proper parallel is to the role of unqualified person who gets a lot of power by virtue of being in good with the dictator-in-chief of a country. It's the gay king's failson boyfriend.

To be clear, I don't mean to suggest Musk and Tump's relationship is sexual, but I think that is the closest parallel to this dynamic. Traditionally, this falls out with the country being driven into ruin until the oligarchs come to the king with an ultimatum, after which either the king or the boyfriend becomes the next ruler and the other is disgraced. On occasion a third party takes the throne.

I cant get any hormones for any of the foreseeable future according to every pharmacy in ontario due to the usa's bullshit administration and i cant begin the process to apply for insurance for bottom surgery because any documentation going to the usa will be automatically rejected as it's about gender transition and I genuinely don't know how to keep going i don't know how to keep doing this when everything is crumbling and any semblance of hope I have is getting squashed by greedy politicians and the last thing I wanna hear from people who arent transitioning who aren't waiting for their bottom surgeries is that it's not that bad and we will resist together or w/e shit like the stakes are not the same and aren't affecting everyone equally okay?
