“Wait, so are all the ex-bazooka carriers pyromaniacs or is that just Chuck?”

Pat guffaws. Chuck gives a scoffing little smile and shakes his head. Tab had to ask; Chuck’s been joking about raiding the little fireworks stand outside of town for weeks; Fourth of July is still a full ten days out.

They’re hanging about the cafe as is usual on a weekday morning. Trigger lays at Tab’s feet, snoozing lightly as one of the cats paces his length back and forth to rub her little head on his flank like an affectionate maniac. His tail thumps lazily but he otherwise doesn’t open his eyes, just lets her do whatever she feels the need to do. 

“What do you mean?” Pat asks. The cat settles against Trigger, tucking her feet under her as she tucks herself into the curve of his side.

“Is Tipper also this into fireworks?”

“Wait, Tipper carried a bazooka?” Chuck sounds very interested. A little too interested. His eyebrows tug together just a microscopic amount, and there’s the beginnings of a mischievous smirk pulling at his mouth. 

“Yeah, you didn’t know that?” Tab would have figured they’d have been aware of it, at least vaguely; really, these two have known Tipper for longer than Tab has. He got hit before they could really start talking, but he’s been working for Chuck for at least a year now.

“Nope, we don’t really talk much about that sort of thing,” Chuck explains offhandedly, and he’s got a grin spreading slow across his face. Tab supposes that’s fair, but he doesn’t know why that warrants the subtly devious look that’s seeping into Chuck’s demeanor.

Pat’s oddly quiet. When Tab looks over at him he sees that he’s got Chuck fixed with a vaguely nauseous expression. Like he’s trying to urge Chuck to stop talking. 

“Don’t—” he starts right as Chuck rounds on him with a gleeful edge to his face.

“Oh, so you have a type?” his grin spreads incrementally for every second that Pat spends speechless. 

“Chuck, please—”

“You totally have a type! That’s so funny, holy shit!”

“—Don’t, please don’t—” he groans, rubbing a hand over his face and sighing. 

Chuck starts to laugh. Tab can’t help but join in. Pat jokingly laments his unrequited crush on Chuck frequently, especially if he’s gotten just a touch too drunk on one of their nights out. Everyone involved knows that he’s joking about that, but Chuck’s words make it clear to Tab that he’s not the only one who’s noticing how stupid Pat gets when it’s Tipper working the counter. 

“I didn’t know that! How was I supposed to know that?!” Pat cries. His face is quickly turning red, and Tab’s absolutely reveling in someone else being the one embarrassed for once. 

“In what world is this something that you can laugh at me about!?” he implores Chuck.

“In the same world you see rabbits in my yard and ask if I’m attracting them on purpose!” he fires back, incredulous. He’s still laughing, and he tosses a meaningful look at Tab. 

That lasted all of two seconds, Tab laments, because now he can feel his face flushing too. But Pat starts to lose his shit, and Tab’s not far behind him because, honestly, he’s not wrong.
