Ralph Lauren unveiled on Wednesday Team USA’s Opening Ceremony Parade Uniform. The brand also debuted RL COOLING, a new wearable technology that serves as a self-regulating temperature cooling device that will be worn by Team USA’s flag bearer during the Olympic and Paralympic Opening Ceremony Parades in Tokyo.
The RL COOLING system is seamlessly integrated into the garment and disperses heat from the wearer’s skin through a sophisticated device that monitors and optimizes temperature and uses the same technology to cool the world’s most advanced computer systems. The effect is a cooling sensation that can be immediately felt and is long-lasting, even in the most oppressive heat.
Ralph Lauren first began exploration in this field with the debut of the Ralph Lauren Heated Jacket at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. Research conducted by Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, an agency of the United States Department of Energy, suggests that personal thermal management is a portable and localized solution that, if scaled, has the potential to reduce the reliance on mass energy-intensive cooling systems, like HVAC systems, for personal comfort.

Color My World
Two factors--one old and one new--may very well meet in retail stores in the near future, and as retailers scramble to try to figure out how to get customers to return to pre-pandemic shopping patterns, it probably couldn’t have come at a better time.
One of the oldest problems in retailing is inventory. It’s a double-edged sword, because you cannot be in business without it. But it can sure put you out of business with it, especially if you managed to buy too much of the wrong things hoping that they would sell.
Consider the plight of any retailer selling basic items like shoes or shirts. You can substitute any other product categories in your head. Let’s suppose the retailer carries a certain brand of men’s long-sleeve dress shirts that come in eight different sizes (and I am being nice here, because of all the many neck and sleeve size dimensions), they are in six colors (once again, I am being cordial), and with three different collar styles.

If you do the math (8 X 6 X 3) our retailer now has 144 different stock keeping units. And that’s just for this one particular brand of dress shirt. Multiply this across numerous other brands and types of shirts, like pullovers, short-sleeve, etc., and the amount of inventory becomes staggering.
No wonder clothing stores have frequent sales. They have to, if they wish to have cash flow to fund future inventory.
Now consider ladies shoes. Once again, let’s look at one manufacturer who makes one basic product in 10 different sizes (lengths and widths can spin out of control), four colors, and five different variations. That’s 200 different shoes to keep in the back room. Yikes!

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone wore the same size and liked the same color? Fat chance. The retailer has to stock inventory if it wants to make sales, but if they don’t sell, guess what?
But wait, there’s more! And that’s the rapidly emerging focus on ESG investing as well as consumption. What’s that, you ask? Simple: Environmental, Social, and Governance. It’s one of the biggest buzz-acronyms in the investing world these days, and while some companies use smoke and mirrors to try to make themselves look like sustainability is Job 1, the fact remains that an increasing number of investors--and consumers--are driven to this end.
That’s where the retail world might just have an amazing collision of seemingly disparate forces. Ralph Lauren is a partner with Dow in a new color-dyeing technology. Next year customers at Ralph Lauren’s flagship stores in New York City will have the ability to have their shirts dyed right there in the store.

The technology, called ECOFAST Pure, uses 90% less chemicals, 50% less energy, and 50% less water than traditional methods. This is poised to become the next poster child of ESG.
Better yet, it helps reduce the inventory that retailers need because they can just load up on “blanks,” which would be plain cotton shirts in their natural color. No more colors of the rainbow. You can get that done in the store, and presumably, the options could be limitless, like going to the paint store.
Here’s an even better part: It provides theater for customers who may have become rather accustomed to just buying things online. If you get to pick your color and see your custom shirt being dyed before your very eyes, the thinking is you will not only buy more, but also tell your friends, posting it with reckless abandon to social media.
If this takes off--and I see no reason why it won’t--retailers will be able to breathe easier, and customers may actually want to return to the shops. It’s much better for the planet, and investors and customers alike will be able to see up close and personal exactly how and why it works. That beats smoke and mirrors, along with shameless virtue signaling.
And you can count me among those lining up not only to see and experience this technology, but to wear it. I like the color of this project, and the result is one-size-fits-all.

The fashion company, known for its iconic polos, revealed its flagship stores will be equipped with new textile-coloring technology that could potentially let shoppers dye shirts in-store as early as next year, a partner with Ralph Lauren on the technology told CNBC.
The details of the in-store dyeing process, which are still largely unknown and under development, would allow let a customer take one of Ralph Lauren's blank-slate cotton tees or polos, choose a color, and have its Color on Demand technology dye the product in-store right before purchase.
Giving the consumer some creative agency in the the production process "has always been a powerful thing," Simeon Siegel, retail analyst at BMO Capital Markets, told CNBC. "Bringing the consumer into the story has always been a winning proposition."
As the consumer economy re-emerges from the coronavirus pandemic, retailers will have to balance e-commerce with their brick-and-mortar models, which may mean moving toward converting larger stores into "experiential retail," leaning on customization and rapid production. Ralph Lauren previously allowed customers to take part in the production experience, customizing colors for its iconic horse-patch to be sewn onto clothes purchased online.
"The store will become more experiential each and every day," Siegel added. "The trick is how to capitalize on it to sell more things."
Earlier this year, Ralph Lauren said it partnered with several materials, textile, and chemical companies, including Dow, to develop a more eco-friendly production process that relies on less water, energy use, and harmful chemicals. The companies announced a new system in March called "Color on Demand," including a new textile treatment called ECOFAST Pure, which uses up to 40% less water, 85% fewer chemicals, and 90% less energy than traditional dyeing processes.
"Ralph Lauren obviously is a big user of cotton and to dye textiles, it takes a lot of chemicals and a lot of water and you generate a lot of waste and mainly you do that because you're trying to use heat and pressure to put that dye into the fabric," CEO of chemicals company Dow, Jim Fitterling, said at a CNBC summit for corporate sustainability and environmentalism.
The new color dye system could help Ralph Lauren better plan amid supply constraints that many retailers continue to face, allowing them to "better balance inventory" and more efficiently anticipate demand for their products without having to worry about ordering details, like color.
Ralph Lauren said in a press release that it is aiming to use Color on Demand in more than 80% of the company's solid color cotton products by 2025. The company also announced earlier this month it would open-source the dyeing process for the textile industry.

Acid dyes belong to a class of dyes that are water soluble and carry anionic properties. Dyes usually have a complex chemical structure containing sulphonyl or amino group which makes them soluble in water. L’ALBERO ‘SPELACCHIO’ È COSTATO AI ROMANI 50MILA EURO. IL TRIPLO DELLO SCORSO ANNO Poco gradito al pubblico. Tanto caro alle casse pubbliche. È il caso dell’albero di Natale di Roma, posizionato in piazza Venezia, che negli ultimi giorni sui social network è stato battezzato come ‘Spelacchio’ dagli utenti delusi per il suo aspetto triste. L’abete rosso proveniente da Cavalese, cittadina della Val di Fiemme, in Trentino Alto Adige, alto 21 metri, visibilmente spelacchiato è costato ben 50mila euro, senza contributo degli sponsor: il triplo di quanto era stato sborsato lo scorso anno. A spiegarlo è stato in un lungo post il blog ‘Roma fa schifo’, che costantemente denuncia situazioni di degrado nella Capitale e raccoglie segnalazioni e denunce dei cittadini. Le cifre sui costi dell’albero di Natale sono riportante in una determina dirigenziale datata 13 novembre avente come oggetto l’acquisizione, il trasporto, il posizionamento dell’albero in piazza, ed anche la rimozione e lo smaltimento al termine delle festività natalizie. L’importo complessivo indicato è di 48,677,08 euro, di cui 37.767,23 soggetti a ribasso, 2.132,01 per gli oneri della sicurezza e 8.777,84 di Iva. Dunque, la cifra di 39.899 euro è stata di poco inferiore alla soglia, di 40.000, che fa scattare l’obbligo di gara. Il Campidoglio ha preferito la trattativa diretta. La società incaricata è la stessa degli anni precedenti, la Ecofast sistema srl ma lo scorso anno l’albero era costato solo 15mila euro. E negli anni passati, inoltre, la stessa società aveva dovuto vincere diverse gare con la partecipazione di altre aziende.
