ESTEREL-PANORAMA-NUAGES-1L8A1183 par Jean-Marc PAYET Via Flickr : Le massif de l'Esterel est un massif montagneux volcanique de faible altitude de 32 000 hectares, situé sur le bord de la mer Méditerranée. Il couvre le sud-est du Var, une petite partie se trouvant dans les Alpes-Maritimes, en France. Situé dans le Sud-Est de la France, c'est un massif cristallin d'origine volcanique qui se jette dans la mer Méditerranée entre Saint-Raphaël (Var) et Mandelieu (Alpes-Maritimes). Séparé des Maures par la vallée de l'Argens. Le relief est déchiqueté et profondément raviné (Grenouillet, Malinfernet…). Le massif s'étend sur 320 km2 dont 130 km2 classés et protégés. 60 km2 de forêt domaniale sont entretenus par l'Office national des forêts. C'est un massif constitué de roches volcaniques qui se sont formées à la fin de l'ère Paléozoïque, il y a 250 millions d'années (au Permien). À cette époque, une intense activité volcanique règne durant 30 millions d'années avec formation de basaltes puis de rhyolites rouges (volcan de Maure-Vieille). Depuis, le massif a subi une très forte érosion ce qui ne permet plus de voir la forme de l'édifice volcanique initial. Le massif est majoritairement composé de roches porphyriques (volcaniques), notamment de rhyolite qui lui donnent sa coloration rougeâtre (avec des veines ponctuelles d'esterellite bleue). Par l'autoroute française A8, sortie no 38 à Fréjus - Saint-Raphaël. Prendre la direction de Fréjus/Tour de Mare. Pour visiter l'intérieur suivre la route nationale 7 qui chemine à l'intérieur du massif en passant par l'auberge des Adrets, près de son point culminant le mont Vinaigre. Pour découvrir les calanques continuer en direction de Saint-Raphaël centre, puis Agay par Valescure. De nombreuses routes forestières sont accessibles, balisées par les panneaux d'information de l'Office national des forêts. À partir de la baie d'Agay, la route de la corniche d'Or, créée à l'initiative du Touring club de France, inaugurée officiellement le 11 avril 1903, longe la mer jusqu'à Cannes. L'opposition entre le rouge flamboyant des rochers et le bleu de la mer offre un paysage contrasté particulièrement émouvant au lever de soleil. Parmi les passages remarquables : le rocher Saint Bartélémy, la calanque d'Aurèle et la pointe de l'Esquillon. La route, extrêmement sinueuse, perd son rang de route nationale 7 dès l'entre-deux-guerres (1935) pour devenir route nationale 98. The Esterel massif is a low-lying volcanic mountain range of 32,000 hectares, located on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It covers the south-east of the Var, a small part being in the Alpes-Maritimes, in France. Located in the South-East of France, it is a crystalline massif of volcanic origin which flows into the Mediterranean Sea between Saint-Raphaël (Var) and Mandelieu (Alpes-Maritimes). Separated from the Moors by the Argens valley. The relief is jagged and deeply gullied (Grenouillet, Malinfernet…). The massif covers 320 km2 of which 130 km2 are classified and protected. 60 km2 of national forest are maintained by the National Forest Office.
