It's about time I get into building interurban stuff in Minecraft with this Pacific Electric "Blimp". If you're wondering why these cars were called "blimps", don't ask me because that's something I wish I knew.

Marking the withdrawal of the class 323 electric multiple unit trains from service around the West Midlands, seeing as I couldn't be bothered to brave the rail replacement bus service between Gloucester & Birmingham yesterday to see the farewell railtour, I thought I'd share these two snaps from shortly after the announcement of the intended replacement of the 323s by the new class 720s, taken just seconds apart, as a pair of unidentified class 323s cross paths departing from and arriving into Birmingham New Street on Saturday 12 August 2022 while on my way to the Blists Hill Victorian Town Steam Weekend. I love getting these shots showing such a change of scene in such a short space of time.

The evolution of West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive liveries on trains. First there was the canary & blue livery applied to a class 312, then the two-tone blue applied to a class 122, then the Midline branding applied to class 310s, then the Centro livery applied to class 150s and 323s, and finally the Network West Midlands livery applied to some class 150s.

You can have one (1) ICE T bogie, as a treat, before the train vanishes into oblivion behind this magnificent abandoned roundhouse.

Levin to Wellington, one EMU at a time - Greater Auckland
Instead of upgrading the Wellington region's suburban rail electrification system from 1,500V DC to 25 kV 50 Hz AC like the rest of the North Island Main Trunk, electricity lines companies can do a cheaper way by extending the Hutt Valley lines from the Upper Hutt to Masterton and the Kapiti lines from Waikaene to Palmerston North and make the Palmerston North station bigger to have one side for the AC electrification for the NIMT and another side for the existing DC electrification powering the Matangi EMU's serving Wellington's suburban rail network.

As much as it may pain me, I have to set aside my Northeast Corridor snobbery and admit that Caltrain is showing the rest of the U.S. how a regional rail line ought to run.

Saturday Movie Night: Current Affairs on the Midland (1980)
youtube
Does anyone remember last year, when I posted On Track For The Eighties, the thirteenth and final entry in BR's Rail Report series? Yeah, thought not, but one of the subjects covered in that film was a progress report on the St Pancras-Bedford suburban electrification scheme. Well, this film explores that scheme in greater detail - explaining why it was needed in the first place, what planning was required, and how the work was carried out while regular services had to continue around them.

Saving Class 507
Can I reach the target of £100 to save a classic train? Only you can help!
Hello!! Last November, I set out to help raise funds to save the Merseyrail Class 507 001 train from being scrapped. I planned to donate profits from sales of my EP “Yellow and Grey” to the Class 507 Preservation Society to save this historic electric train. I’m pleased to announce that I have now raised almost £100 from sales of the EP on Bandcamp! 🤩 I’d love to break the £100 mark on this…

Chester - 2023 vs 2024
Tumblr media
1 year apart at Chester... It's not just the PEPs that have gone, but the TfW class 150s are doing the disappearing act as well, with some being listed for sale by ROMIC, the same firm behind the export of the class 43/Mk III HST sets to Mexico and Nigeria.
Like a lot of people I'll definitely miss the classic, rugged, utilitarian looks of a lot of these old British Rail built multiple units, but I have to admit there's been an incredible amount of thought put into passenger amenities on a lot of the newer regional, suburban, and local trains taking over services across the country.

For a time in the late 1980's, class 312 No. 312204 was pained in a somewhat gaudy canary and blue livery with West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive logos. The livery may have been based on the livery sported by WMPTE buses at the time, though buses definitely wore it better than the EMU did! When WMPTE rebranded as Centro in 1990, they came up with a much more tasteful colour scheme for trains operating services Centro subsidised.
