Franz navigated the gray concrete tunnels without hesitation. He had a good sense of direction. He led them topside into what looked like a park: forested, sunny, adorned with ground-level creepers of fragrant flowers. He had always wondered why Scrabble lived in the little hut…no, crypt…in the midst of such bounty. He spent all his waking hours in the tunnels, so why come topside to sleep? Something about starlight?
He looked around, though “person who might betray them to Fortune” wasn’t something he could recognize by looking. He saw a line of electric streetlamps in one direction, but no traffic. He ushered Evan and Habs topside and led them to a relief-carved crypt.
“He’s dead?” Habs deadpanned.
“No, just eccentric.” Franz knocked firmly, three times, then a whisper of a tap. It was a signature of sorts.
No answer.
Franz leaned toward the door, taut with worry. “Scrabble! I need you.” The other two were watching, waiting for him to produce. “Scrabble,” he said louder, “I need you.”
“Don’t you wish we had a telephone,” Habs said flatly.
“If only it could follow someone around,” said Evan. “I wish the king issued more electrotech and less…whatever is happening.”
“I can fix this,” said Franz. “I can, I will. I will fix this. I’m sorry. We could get someplace sheltered to rest. Scrabble won’t be out forever.”
They didn’t talk much, walking in the dank tunnels that crisscrossed the city. From River Up, where Scrabble lived, back to University. Over and over Franz tried to think of something comforting to say to the vibrating Evan and the quiet, clench-jawed Habs. But he was no empath, nor a counselor, nor anything much of use. He was a janitor who couldn’t even find answers.
Evan was staring at him. Franz addressed himself to staring down out of their puddle of old-fashioned lamplight. They had electric torches, but the battery life would never suit.
“You okay?” Evan said at last.
Franz stumbled. “Me? I’m fine. Why would I not be fine?”
“You seemed pretty disappointed about Scrabble.”
“I tried to help,” said Franz. “It did nothing.”
“It’s more of a lead than I had. And you had the map idea. Honestly, I’m just…clueless.”
“We will need an empath before this is over.”
“Yeah. About that.”
“What?”
“I’m…not a very good empath. Actually, I fail most evaluations.”
Habs lifted her chin and barked semi-hysterical laughter down the tunnel.
“I can do almost anything for a quarter of a second. I’ll do my best.”
“Evan….” Franz tried to be confident. “We’ll do what we need to to get you close enough, if it even becomes necessary. You’re not using these powers in a vacuum.”
They retraced their steps; Franz couldn’t tell whether Habs and Evan recognized it. The tunnels were dank, and dark outside the lamplight.
Franz led them around the turn. No maps here; he was in his element.
“Do you know where we’re going?” said Habs.
“And how to get there,” he said, hoping not to annoy her.
In time they reached the upper layer of tunnels, where they might conceivably run into other maintenance staff. Franz hurried to the underlibrary.
Then Franz turned away and led them back through the tunnels, eager to do something right.
