A $7 million grant to grow stem cell research
Swinburne University of Technology has received a share of a $7 million Medical Research Future Fund grant to develop first-of-its-kind Australian research to allow live stem cells to be 3D printed and used in treatments. The cross-institutional research team will develop novel cartilage-based stem cell therapies that will change the way we care for people living with painful joint disease, such as osteoarthritis, and facial disfigurement. More than two million Australians live with the painful and degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis, and one in 2,000 newborns are born with microtia – an absent or poorly formed ear – which can lead to hearing loss, speech and literacy delays. This research could actually restore damaged or absent cartilage, transforming how these conditions are treated and vastly improving quality of life for sufferers. It will use technology to revolutionise the way we think about personalised care, patient involvement and scientific advancements. Cartilage, like that pictured, is a flexible connective tissue that protects our joints and bones A plan to grow cartilage using stem cells This ambitious project builds on many years of previous research, including at Swinburne. In the initial stages, the five-year project will focus on the technologies used to take live stem cell printing from research labs into clinical settings. The team will then proceed to clinical trials to prove the efficacy of the solution. Led by University of Melbourne Professor Peter Choong, the researchers also hope to simplify processes to bring these treatments into hospitals so that clinicians can treat conditions more quickly, with fewer complications than before. In addition to Swinburne and the University of Melbourne, the research team also includes experts from La Trobe University, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, University of Wollongong, University of Sydney, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Monash University, RMIT and the University of Toronto. Swinburne brings technology and people to the project Swinburne will develop a bioreactor system using its patent-protected materials, which allow stem cells to be expanded to large numbers that can be used to repair and replace damaged or missing cartilage. Expert in biomedical electromaterials science, Professor Simon Moulton, will lead the Swinburne team. “This grant allows us to continue the work we have already been doing with the other partners over many years in developing innovative cartilage repair strategies,” says Professor Moulton. “As a materials engineering researcher in the medical area, we do not always have the opportunity to translate our efforts from fundamental research into a clinical human solution. Professor Grant McArthur is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and holds a Ph.D. in Medical Biology. He is the Executive Director of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre; inaugural Lorenzo Galli Chair of Melanoma and Skin Cancers at the University of Melbourne and is a Senior Principal Research Fellow (NHMRC). He is also Head of the Molecular Oncology Laboratory and a Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Professor McArthur was the inaugural winner of the Translational Research Award of the Foundation Nelia et Amadeo Barletta, has held the Sir Edward Dunlop Clinical Cancer Research Fellowship of the Cancer Council of Victoria, was awarded the inaugural Martin Lackmann medal for translational research, received the Medical Oncology Group of Australia’s Novartis Oncology Cancer Achievement Award and has been the recipient of the prestigious Tom Reeve Award from the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia.
He has been a national and international study co-chair of a number of clinical trials of targeted therapies. His research interests include discovery of novel drug targets in cancer, targeting oncogenes, immunological effect of targeted therapies, clinical trials of targeted therapeutics, personalised medicine, melanoma, cell cycle control, metabolism and protein synthesis in cancer.
Ms Kylie Walker
Kylie is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, where she has a mandate to lead crucial national conversations and strategy towards a thriving, healthy and connected Australia supported by technology.
She specialises in connecting technologists, engineers and scientists with governments, business, media and society – skills built over many years in senior federal communication and advocacy roles in the science, technology and health sectors.
As the immediate past CEO of Science & Technology Australia, Kylie led campaigns to increase investment in Australian research and development, and created the acclaimed Superstars of STEM program, championing Australian women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Kylie is also Chair of the Australian National Commission for UNESCO and a visiting Fellow at the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science. In 2019, she was named in the 100 Women of Influence list by the Australian Financial Review, for her work on improving equity, diversity and inclusion in STEM.
Professor Robert Sparrow BA (Hons) (Melb.), PhD (A.N.U.)
Rob Sparrow is a Professor in the Philosophy Program, and a Chief Investigator in the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science, at Monash University, where he works on ethical issues raised by new technologies. He has published on topics as diverse as the ethics of military robotics, the moral status of AIs, human enhancement, stem cells, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, xenotransplantation, and migration. He is a co-chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Robot Ethics and was one of the founding members of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control.

Anna Evangeli is Deputy Editor, Health + Medicine, The Conversation. She has been a health and science journalist for 30 years, and is also an experienced workshop presenter and educator. These robots require robust soft sensors that can sustain large deformations. This work presents novel soft pneumatic sensing chambers (SPSC) that can be directly 3D printed using a low‐cost 3D printer and an off‐the‐shelf thermoplastic poly(urethane) (TPU). The SPSC are responsive to four main mechanical input modalities of compression, bending, torsion and rectilinear displacement and all of which cause a pressure change in the SPSC. The SPSC have several advantages including fast response, linearity, negligible hysteresis, repeatability and reliability, stability over time, long lifetime and very low power consumption. The SPSC are optimized using finite element modeling (FEM) simulations to obtain a linear relationship between the input mechanical modalities and the output pressure. With a developed hyperelastic material model for the TPU, the FEM simulations accurately predicted the experimental behavior. These SPSC are generic and can be tailored to diverse soft and interactive human‐machine interfaces including soft wearable gloves for virtual reality applications and soft adaptive grippers control, soft push buttons for STEM education platforms, haptic feedback devices for rehabilitation, soft game controllers and soft throttle controllers for gaming and soft bending sensors for soft prosthetic hands."
