Eurovision 2007 - Number 23 - Natalia Barbu - "Fight"
youtube
For the first time in 2007, Moldova opted to ditch its national final and go with an internal selection. There was a reason for this. In 2006, a young singer with links to the Moldovan jazz scene had her first single released. Îngerul meu (My Angel) sat at number one in the Romanian charts for eleven weeks. That young singer was Natalia Barbu.
Later in 2006 TRM jumped at the chance to have this attractive and popular singer represent them at Eurovision. No need for national selection when you've got the number one artist of the year in the Romanian speaking part of Europe willing to represent you.
Natalia's career began in Romania, by winning a singing competition in 1998 in Mamaia. She then began to work with Moldovan jazz/folk/punk band Trigon who wrote songs for her. She sang folk, jazz and pop until her career went through the roof in 2006.
Fight was written by two other upcoming Moldovan musical talents. Alex Brașoveanu aka Alex Davia, who was about to become the producer of the Moldovan version of Fame Factory as well as a major producer and song-writer. The lyrics were by Elena Buga who has had several songs in Moldovan national finals, with this being the first one. She even entered a song as a singer herself in 2009.
It's a pop-rocker with Natalia showing her skills as a violinist at the introduction. That violin becomes an object for her backing dancers to avoid in their choreography from that point on. Natalia is simultaneously rousing, clear in her determination to stand-up for herself. She's not letting anyone tread on her, starting off quieter and building up to the point where she can belt some anger out of her system.
Beyond that rather generic standing your ground message, there's nothing really to this song. It's a generic anger at the world. Self-empowerment without anything specific to drive that. A song that's there to puff itself up and strut with it chest high when there isn't really any threat. The violin doesn't really fit well, although those deeper strings are key to the air of menace that comes along later.
It impressed enough people to scrape through the semi-final in tenth place. The last qualifying spot, pipping Portugal by three points. In the days between the semi-final and the grand final more people came around to its charms. In that final it again managed to finish tenth. That meant that in the three years Moldova had been at Eurovision, they'd finished in the top ten twice. Not bad!
Natalia went on to have a successful career mixing up her music output and changing styles. She tried three more times to get to Eurovision, twice for Moldova (and successfully in 2024), and one for Romania. She released four studio albums and more than twenty singles in Romanian language markets.

I knew I could find you here. What’s wrong? Are you OK? Yeah, everything’s OK. I was just called a [straight woman that cockteases lesbians], but, other than that, everything’s fine. And I just ran into a pack of shitty misogynists. As if being a mom were an insult.
#madre solo hay dos#ana servín#mariana herrera#shitty screencap posts (TM)#another lame-ish post but I just wanted a space to tag vomit real quick about how SOFT ana's voice got when she asked 'are you ok?'#like is this now the status quo??? is ana now gonna be a hellcat with literally everyone else#but when she sees mariana has a hair out of place she'll completely melt into this gooey alter ego that only cares if she's ok??#because if so I'ma need time to prepare because it is A LOT!!!!!!!!!!#her reaction to hearing what elena's current squeeze called mariana was rly cute too#(sidenote: two years of master's degree coursework were finally put to use in my decision-making process for how to translate 'buga'#I spent an inordinate amount of time waffling between going for the functional equivalent or not before deciding not to take any risks#lest I got a bunch of anons in my inbox chastising me for how I interpreted the term completely wrong or something lol#so y'know money well spent!!)#anyway this was a cute little moment#I understand their screentime can be limited because of the short runtime#and the fact that they have to juggle screentime/storylines for a lot of supporting characters as well#so I will take whatever few crumbs they give me and make a three-course meal out of it#it was nice to see them commiserating about their respective troubles#as well as seeing again how much ana always picks up immediately if there's something bothering mariana#which is just the SWEETEST thing especially considering how they started out ugh :)))
