As much as Emily would like to think that she’s somewhat organized, she’s really not. She trips over her shoes in the entrance, misplaces to-do lists and reminders and grocery lists, more than often giving up on finding them and just committing everything to memory. Her purse, once she takes it home, is usually never opened again until she’s back at work. Pens go missing, perfume bottles get swallowed up in its depths, jewelry and makeup go in and never come out. If she ever had the misfortune of discovering that something was missing, it was usually in the office, far too late.
This morning it’s a bit heavier than usual, but she doesn’t care enough to chance a look at the contents as she slings it over her shoulder and kisses you goodbye. It could just be pressing down on the tender muscle at the junction of her neck, sore and achy from god knows what it is now.
She forgets about it quickly. Right off the bat, there’s too much to think about, too much that needs her attention before the sun is fully off the horizon: tilting stacks of files, ringing phones and desperate callers behind them, scribbled in meetings that she can’t seem to cross off of her notepad. Emily barely gets off the elevator before Garcia’s on her, rambling about urgent consults and their apparently crushing, desperate need for new 8th generation iPads.
It all balls up into a slow but persistent headache settling at her temples. The pulsing starts sometime after ten, the bullpen buzzing with noise as she drags her blinds down with a rattle.
Emily’s shoulders slump when she’s out of view. She blows out a breath, rounding her way back to her desk and rooting through her purse. Her search for Advil goes forgotten when her hand brushes against something she definitely hadn’t packed.
Smooth, heavy, and glass, it’s not hard to tell what it is. Emily pulls the Tupperware out, her lips twitching when she sees the fruit you’d packed along with a sandwich, a sticky note pressed flat on the lid and stealing her attention. She peels it off, laughing as she reads your familiar scrawl, your voice echoing in her head.
Fuel up, Chief! You’ve got a busy day ahead of you, and you gotta kiss me by the end of it. Don’t work that pretty head too hard, though. Your frown lines won’t thank you.
Love you.
Emily doesn’t really think before dialing your number and pressing the phone to her ear. As it rings, she grabs the picture of you on her desk and carefully tucks the note inside the frame, slotting it between wood and glass and your beaming smile.
The tone dies.
“Hey, babe,” you greet sweetly.
“Hi.” Her grin travels through her voice. Whipped and boneless, it’s the same consistency as her mushy heart. “Thank you for packing me lunch.” She says softly.
God, is she twirling her hair around her finger?
She’s twirling her hair. Jesus.
Emily drops the strand, tucking it behind her ear as you hum into the phone. “I wanted to put some strawberries, but we ran out. Might go get some today.”
“Blueberries are fine.” She rushes out. “Perfect. I love them. Thank you, sweetheart.”
“You’re welcome. I should’ve started doing it a lot sooner. You’re skin and bones, Emily.”
“Am not.” She frowns.
“Uh huh. You’re worse than a toddler,” you murmur. She can imagine the scrunch of your nose. “Just eat it all, please? I’d like my wife to not wither away before I’m home to kiss her hello.”
Emily rolls her eyes, her lips pressing against a smile. “I won’t. You’re so dramatic.” Really, though, you’re not. Even she has noticed the recent airiness of her clothes, the way they hang less snug than they used to.
“Learned from the best.” You chirp, your laugh warming her insides. She lets you ramble on for a few seconds more, letting your voice dissolve the tension in her neck before you cut it short, “I have to go, Em. I love you.”
“I love you.” She murmurs, smoothing her thumb over the Tupperware and chewing down on another grin. “Take care.”
“Mhm. Come home.”
“You know I will.”
You hang up, and for a small, phantom moment, she forgets her headache. She’s preoccupied with snapping a picture of the note, something golden rushing in her blood and making her smile. It matches the glint of her wedding ring in the sunlight, unapologetically luminescent, both paths leading to you even when you’re miles away.

more than seven sentences but what else is new lol. the angst is still angsting in colleagues au atm sorry ☹️😢
Stepping into the metal box alongside him, the doors thankfully close with just the two of them inside. No one else here to witness the awkwardness that shrouds the space. Carlos feels suffocated, starts to wonder if TK feels it too, of course he does, his brain helpfully supplies, and he tugs his tie loose at the junction of his throat in an effort to breathe even a little bit easier.
TK finally says more than two words to him as they rise up the levels, his voice harsh as he utters out despondently, “I’m so mad at you right now.” His lashes are still wet, stuck in clumps against his under eye, as he glances from the floor and meets Carlos’ wide eyed gaze across the elevator.
He speaks again, this time his voice no higher than a whisper and Carlos’ chest aches with sadness.
“I don’t know how much more of this I can handle,” he says bitterly, as his shoulders slump forward and he drops his gaze back to the floor, away from Carlos’. He watches as TK curls his trembling hands into fists, sees him dig his nails into his own palm, observes his grimace when he does so.
Carlos let’s out a sad whimper and smacks the emergency stop button to his left so harshly that it leaves a lingering sting to his palm, the car coming to a halt several floors from their destination.
“Tyler,” is all he can mutter as TK‘s eyes rise back up to meet his, and Carlos steps forward, drags him into his arms in a hug so tight he’s probably crushing a significant portion of his ribcage. TK practically collapses in his embrace, and the warmth of his hands cling to Carlos’ shoulders in an effort to keep himself vertical.

@astranite, ah, yes, ‘Runaway’! I can generally turn off my ‘train-brain’ for any train episodes – unless of course our hero or villain is train surfing, traps the opposition on a carriage, and kicks at the coupler to separate the carriage from the engine, and speeds off into the sunset to await round 2. Then the entire neighbourhood has to endure me yelling general abuse, and "Couplers don’t work like that!"
While mag-levs are strictly outside my area of expertise, they do share a lot of infrastructure details and safety features with current diesel-electric, and electric trains, and when you take those into consideration, well, let’s just say the set up shown on screen is, um, lacking.
Brains, John and Virgil should all be having very strong words with the Japanese Rail Network.
First point is: why on god’s green earth are they testing a new locomotive design on a live line?! Especially one that operates passenger services? Even if it is a locomotive undergoing a post-overhaul mainline test, there should have at least been a qualified mechanic on board to test-ride it’s performance. Away from passenger trains.
Second problem: and speaking of the track, it’s all one track, one rail, so how do trains going on opposite directions pass each other? At the very least there should be what’s called ‘crossing loops’: a short section of track that forks off and then runs parallel to the main line, before rejoining it. One train goes into the loop, and pulls up, while the other train passes on the main line. If the crossing loop is long enough the train might not need to stop – this type of setup is more common in the United States than it is in Australia – we get to stop and stretch our legs.
Many crossing loops in my area are being upgraded to include catch points. These are a set of points (which is the junction where a train can change tracks, they can also be called ‘switches’, but the standard term here is ‘points’, so that’s what I’m sticking with) linked to the points on the mainline which are intended to prevent a train rejoining the main line without permission from the controller. Instead, the lead engine will be directed off the tracks to loose forward momentum in a specially constructed section of ballast (rocks, preferably granite, about the size of your fist). A mag-lev train would be able to be shunted to a de-energised section of track, and allowed to shed its momentum safely there. (There should be friction locks that deploy when power is lost, like in an elevator car – ‘it would be like hitting a brick wall’, eh, not so much, Brains.)
Third Problem: And this is the biggie! All modern locomotives have a safety system in place designed to prevent the driver falling asleep on the job. In Australia it is currently called the “Driver Vigilance System”, or ‘vigi’. Its job is to safely stop the train before it is stopped, should the driver fall asleep or be … otherwise incapacitated.
The technology has gone through a few iterations, the oldest being the ‘Dead Man’s Switch’, a footplate that drivers had to hold down while the train was in motion. Unfortunately, due to the fact that drivers can be on a train for up to 12 hours, and it required a degree of force to hold down, drivers were prone to wedging the footplate down with their lunch box, or an emergency flag. Sadly, the system was shown to be entirely ineffective on 31 January 2003 when the driver of the Tangara G7 passenger train suffered a heart attack enroute and slumped with his weight on the deadman’s switch, allowing the passenger train to enter a curve rated for 60km/h at 117km/h. It derailed, killing seven (including the driver), and injuring 40 people. It is commonly referred to as the Waterfall Train Disaster.
The current system has a light illuminated for 10sec, which then flashes for 7 sec, then a 5 sec high pitched beeping, if the ‘vigi’ button is not pressed in that time, the train brakes will deploy automatically, while simultaneously putting in an emergency call to the network controller. If the train crew doesn’t respond to the controller answering the call, emergency procedures are brought into play, and emergency services are sent to the train’s GPS location. (And if you weren’t incapacitated, you would wish you were.)
All the hapless engineer in ‘Runaway’ would have had to do was … not press the button.
And the thing that makes me laugh? John being able to reset the points the ‘instant’ that the passenger train clears the points. For safety’s sake, points are locked in position until the system detects the rail traffic has cleared a set point at a safe distance, and even then, there is ‘time out’ period between clearance, and points unlocking, and then a 120 second ‘time out’ between the points registering as being locked into position, and the signal clearing.
But hey, technology changes. Maybe they ‘improved’ the points system? Although their cyber security is seriously lacking ….
But it looks good on screen, and I don't suppose the series' target demographic really has a whole lot of practical experience in rail operations.

Prompt #17, Extra Credit: Blood
“Gun- Gun- Gunslinger- Hawk-” The static came in the middle of hysterical laughter. Raucous. Joyful. Pained.
Weaponsfire seared the air. Plasma scorched even the darkest pieces of the midnight alleys. Circuits and bone and artificial memories screamed in the arching shadows like neon. Copper wiring with magnetic spirals as plasma bolts in magnetic remnants spun by them, electricity in the air that coursed along her skin and down her fingertips. Gunshots. Gunshots. Gunshots. It had just rained. The puddles were evaporating. Water and mineral content changing. Not the acid-tinged rain. Not the runoff filled with particulate plastic and rubber. Iron. Blood. It reverberated with the screaming. With the gunfire. Her fingertips scrabbled as the night drowned out her voice, as the one currently fighting couldn’t turn away. There were so many after all. Where had they come from? No evidence on any network. No trace in the silicon. No touch could elevate her senses into finding them in footage or local magnetic effects. But here they were now, and here they were now. Bullets scraped the sheet metal wall as she finally found it. She tore off the access panel, the metal groaning and screaming in time with the combat. Could it be heard over it all? She could certainly feel it. She could feel the echo of it in every sensor even as they focused on tracking every projectile that rocketed by. How could she feel so powerless in all of this? Certainly she wasn’t made for being a combatant but she had some of the best military tech money could buy put into this body, not even speaking on software- No time, no time, milliseconds were screaming by and signals were closing in. Coming closer, gunfire louder, her combatant charge cursing as she fumbled for ammunition. And then it all went black.
Not for her, no. Far from it. For her? The world couldn’t be clearer. Her tail was jammed straight into the junction box. The entire sector’s power supply at her fingertips. Enough voltage to fry any human so insane, enough current to melt any synthetic that could ever hope to imagine. But for her? The mimicked taste of copper and ozone on her body’s sensors only let her know that her laughter had become laced with the high pitched scream of high voltage.
Fuses blew, breakers popped, lights went dark, machines fell dead, as all in that moment was hers. All in that moment was made to bend to her, to come to her, to feed her. “Gunslinger.” The AM-3S unit spoke. A voice of one, a chorus of more. “Watch.” And the city came to life under the weight of a mind. Pylons roared into brilliant plasma arcs, neon bulbs sparked and exploded, ancient machinery lost beneath the asphalt screamed through the surface. All of it her hands, all of it her fingertips, all of it bleeding her senses and bleeding her life. The datastream of multitudes as network and networked rose in tandem, as circuit and copper and old-world PCB responded to her just as the body of one did. Human-lethal pressure waves, human-lethal temperature, human-lethal particulate as blood and bone vaporized under the renewed life of a mind that had been confined from ten thousand senses down to one. And still the unit stood close to her gunslinger. A smile on its face. The cables trailing behind it still sparking and frying in the junction box. Further and further the blackout spread. And louder and louder the voltage laughed. Drive off these attackers, protect herself, protect this charge, follow her protocols to the letter and she could have it all. She could have her network, this body, her mind and all that it entailed, she could be free of it all and take what she wanted in this cesspool that she had been born into-
Blackout. Cut off. Her tail snapped back into her body, her mind pulled back as a cord which had stretched too far. Face down in the water. Iron percentage: 34%. Correction, as her last thought plugged through her remaining charge. Face down in the blood.
