This is more from the Blanche collection, our favorite linen enthusiast who scouted vintage and antique embroidery pieces in Philadelphia and New York City throughout her 20th century life. 🧵 There is no doubt that Blanche knew a pretty linen when she saw one (or two in this case!). These two fingertip towels were made sometime between 1920-1940 and feature an unusually zippy arrangement of threadwork lines and designs plus florals in the shades of yellow, blue, lavender and sage. Fingertip towels were always used for lighter work like glass drying, hand drying or display and therefore differ from a hand towel which was used for much more active, everyday activities like wiping down counters, cleaning up messes and assisting in a general all-around helpful way in the kitchen. As a talented sewer herself, Blanche was always on the lookout for unique details when it came to design. In French, they call that “la patte” meaning the artist’s touch, their personal style, their paw. I love that! It’s what makes every piece of vintage embroidery 100% unique. And the appreciation of that is what made Blanche such a good finder of almost-antique pieces like these. A new batch of antique and vintage linens has just begun to arrive in the shop! So delicate and beautifully embroidered, these are pieces that have been held in one family’s private collection for three generations. Blanche was the lady with the eye for embroidery who began this love affair of a collection back in the 20th century. Like my grandmother Lucy, Blanche grew up in an orphanage in New York in the early years of the 1900s. There she learned how to sew and to make lace, which she turned into a career as an adult. Supplying small boutiques in NYC with lace collars, Blanche made a whole world for herself out of fine fabrics and intricate embroidery. When she wasn’t poking around the antique shops of heirloom New York on collecting trips for herself, she was adorning her own linens with intricate threadwork that was stunning and unique. Coming this week to the shop are some of her collections of tablecloths, napkins and kitchen linens. The pink linen beauty pictured here, with the mint and purple florals is one of my favorites! Image 2. of 3. Mrs. Collins hand sketched the initial cypher in pencil. It was perfected through many iterations of pencil sketch development. Once approved by the client, the cypher was has engraved on half inch thick steel for the notecards and diminutive, folded, Onion Skin calling card. During one of the many, substantive client conversations over the phone—the client was in Malibu and Mrs. Collins in New York City—the idea of embroidered linens was discussed. The Italian linen, oversized table napkins were sourced at the danddbuilding. The embroidery was by created by @pennandfletcher, Embroidery Artisans and Designers. Mrs. Collins learned a lot about the differences between monograms and cyphers engraved on paper and the same concept stitched in thread on cloth. Mrs. Collins is often commissioned to hand-draw bespoke cyphers and monograms for private clients who use the finished art for many applications.
