EF2 May Update 1: Progress Bars and Hiatus Announcement

 Hello everybody! That’s right, it’s time for the first May Update! Let’s jump right in with last update’s goals:

Sketch all 7 primary backgrounds left for Area 4: Done! They’re alllll sketched. Yay!

Add planned objekts into Area 3: Done!

Write Objekt Reactions for Munya and Sharma in Area 4: Done!

Maybe actually get those progress bars sorted out?: Done! And, here, let’s take a look at those right away!

Character Conversations: 10/590. These are the conversations between Ame, his allies, and other characters as experienced when choosing the dialogue option ‘Let’s Talk’. 590 may seem like a big number, but the ally conversations are counted twice- A convo between Ame, Bea, and Greta is listed once in Bea’s list and once in Greta’s list, it was just easier for tracking purposes to count them in both places than to weed out the duplicates.

Zones: 0/44. I haven’t made any strides in this regard yet. There are twenty-two zones total, each with separate tasks for the visual assets and the minigame implementation.

Backgrounds: 25/67. These are all the planned backgrounds for areas one through seven! What’s left includes most of Area 4, all of Areas 5 to 7, and a few secondary backgrounds for Area 1 and Area 2. Area 8 is excluded from the count, and will probably have its own progress bar down the line- While the majority of Pine Creek has some grounding in its map layout, Area 8’s necessary backgrounds will reveal themselves in the writing process.

Death Methods: 2/26. Have I even mentioned this mechanic before? There are thirteen ways Ame can die in the course of the game, and each one has an entry for its visual assets and for its code- The visual assets mainly being ‘achievement badges’ for a collection screen, though some will also include a CG! The two completed entries are for the code implementation of the two deaths in the demo: The bus crash, and provoking Veno.

Memory Segments:  14/20. I wrote a majority of these back in November! There’s a few left, some of which are already partially written. The rest of them aren’t a very high priority just yet, since we haven’t made it to the unlock conditions for most of them anyhow.

And to be perfectly clear- These bars only reflect specific factors with numbers I know so far- More bars will eventually be added, and I won’t include these progress bars during updates in which they have not changed. They don’t fully represent what’s been worked on up to now OR what will be included in the full game- For instance, not a single one of those ‘character conversations’ were included in the demo, conversation branches are a different and less-countable category. But they should give an idea of some part of progress and what��s being worked on at a given time moving forward!

And, when it comes to those progress bars- That’s what I’ll be focusing on very soon! The initial instances of running into each character are established for all but Area 4, and even those are coded in without assets yet. So, I’m in a very good position to shift focus to writing rather than asset creation for a while. And that’s exactly what I will be doing in…

~An Update Hiatus~

I know, I just switched from once-monthly to twice-monthly updates. And when I come back in either September or October (Depending on whether I decide to participate in the Spooktober Gamejam), that will resume. But truth be told, there’s a LOT happening this summer, including but not at all limited to tabling and paneling at conventions, moving to a different apartment, helping somebody ELSE move to a different apartment, and artfight of course. My attention… Is demanded in a lot of other places.

So, while I’ll 100% still be making progress on EF2 during this time, I’ve made the difficult decision for my sanity to let myself off the hooks involved in setting specific targets for specific timeframes. I’ll need to have the freedom to go two weeks without even looking in the direction of EF2 if I’m going to balance everything in the upcoming months. Official updates will be paused, though I’ll still be posting in the discord!

I’ll be back with plenty of good news when I do return from this break from structure- And the goals for the rest of May are still in effect. Let’s review those!

mel is a demon (not the biblical kind) and studies whats basically magic biology + psychology =D she also really enjoys traveling and wood carving! cree is human and i originally made him a lawyer of some kind but currently that's up in the air lol, he loves bad tv shows and pointing out the inaccuracies in them! they watch horror movies together and laugh at how stupid the characters are <3

mel is as previously mentioned, a demon, she is thusly immortal so you can imagine the kind of angst that causes considering cree is a human dude, also since i've only mentioned this in some tags, cree is canonically trans

cree is the sole braincell in their friend group most of the time and he only uses it when he finds it funny or when his friends' shenanigans go a bit too far and they need bailing out

mel loves traveling solely for the sake of learning, she's totally the museum going type (cree is too but for completely different reasons) i imagine she gets genuinely a bit bummed when there isn't some kind of guided tour for her to take when traveling (she doesn't need it but she likes the experience)

they hated each other when they first met, cree was in a 'being an asshole is totally a normal and acceptable coping mechanism' phase and mel's usual trauma response is of the 'angry at the world and everyone in it' variety. they became close after being forced to become roommates and having to be in close proximity to each other's pathetic attempts at pretending to be alright

mel is american and cree is german-japanese, mel is completely emancipated + no contact while cree has a cordial but kind of strained relationship with his adoptive mother

mel's face markings are actually burns! (i just kinda suck at illustrating them lol) they extend all down her torso and part of her legs and arms

mel is very strong and frequently swings cree around just for funsies, whether cree enjoys this depends on the day

Renarin Kholin- The Stormlight Archive

Renarin is one of few characters in epic fantasy literature who's canonically neurodivergent or queer - it's rare enough to just see one of those things! He is also the best, just all around. He is so reckless and has such a strong moral compass: like he ran to help fight a giant crab monster with no weapons, no armor, and no training; he jumped into a 4vs1 duel to help his brother, with no armor, no training, and a sword that deals him psychic damage anytime he holds it.

He's autistic and gay; disability is a big part of his story; he's so much of an outcast that he was the first person to join his world's extra-marginalized order of sinister-but-not-evil magic users; and while he's quiet and self-contained, he's full to the brim with suppressed rage. Sidelined second son and quasi-cursed prophet. I fully believe he can take this tournament by storm.

Renarin is autistic, epileptic, and queer as the day is long. As a kid, he struggled to win his dad's approval due to his inability to fight as well as his abled brother -- but these days his dad's wised up and realized that Renarin actually kicks ass. When Renarin gets magic powers, he isn't "cured"; he's still epileptic, he's still autistic, and he still has a crush on the strapping young alien lad in his squad. Not only does he break down class barriers by hanging out with ex-slave humans (he's the prince of a major kingdom), he breaks racial barriers by dating an alien who's entire race was, until recently, enslaved by humans. Overall, he's a complete badass who is getting more confident, more appreciated, and more gay with every book in the series.

she canonically has arthritis and chronic fatigue, and is canonically bisexual and omnigender (using all pronouns)

i don’t remember what it is (or if that’s even said) but his disability gives her trouble walking some days and on others makes it so they can’t get out of bed. bisexual &nonbinary omnigender!

listen. i love him. oh my god i love aer. their disability and queerness are both central to the narrative. due to it being disabled, she is not taken seriously where he comes from. xe has given up on insisting on its gender being respected - every time thon tries, its taken as a sign he is having a bad day symptoms wise, which in turn is taken as though she has never grown up past being eight years old. through the game proper, it hides hir disability most of the time. to ask for help is to let someone know. and throughout their entire life, everyone who knew has treated him as stupid - perhaps not always, but everyone has. this is why she doesnt really want to get out of the anomaly; this is the first time fae has had friends who dont know, and therefore dont have "a reason" to infantilize it. star hides everything behind a chipper demeanour. well, that demeanour isnt entirely a lie; she is really silly and pleasant - one of my favourite things he says in the entire game is "isnt blue super bad for computers? like blue balls of death or something?". upon being asked "where do you come from that computers have balls?", they respond "well, how do they reproduce if they dont?" in conclusion. Loam my beloved.

A. Realistic: his home is organized really neatly, except for wherever he does his clothes-sewing. That corner is for being a gremlin.

B. Unrealistic, but hilarious: uhhh. i swear i had smth really funny in mind for him. OH YEAH the idea that his pants in the first game are like, not made from patterned fabric, and instead each individual star is sewn on

C. Soul-crushing: his parents died when he was 7 (iirc), and hes 35 now. you know how every time you recall a memory, it changes slightly? at this point, his memories of his parents are probably exaggerated and idealized. i dont think they would be warped entirely beyond recognition; but theyd be polished, instead of humanly-imperfect.

D. Unrealistic and im rejecting canon about it: nothing really? i like canon too much

I know the day is nearly over, but this Trans Day Of Visibility, consider playing Entropic Float- A FREE game made by, about, and for weird trans people.

Fourteen people have found themselves trapped in a strange, hostile dimension positioned outside of time and space as they know it. When midnight strikes, everything will be erased... But there may be a way out, if your observation wills it.

The fact that the game is made by trans people, and that so many of the characters are trans, isn't usually a selling point I'd lean on. I'd like to think Entropic Float stands up all on its own, but- If you feel so inclined, TDOV is as good a time as any to take a look at some transgender art.

Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for having chronic fatigue specifically in entropic float, cause that was my first exposure to it, and after a fair bit of research: it would explain a lot.

WE GOT ANOTHER ONE

Okay, jokes aside- For as frequently as this seems to happen, it never stops being amazing for me. Creating Entropic Float was, for me... An exploration of disabled experiences, during the worst and most prolonged flare-up of chronic conditions I have had in my life to date. It didn't begin that way when I went into it, but really, had no option but to become that kind of story.

Disability is an odd and difficult journey, one that in a lot of ways, can strangely mirror being queer- And which is tied up in a lot of the same issues, fights, and legislations. Self-determination, bodily autonomy, access to medical care. But strongly, I feel that both have the similar phenomenon of 'There isn't more of it now, there's just more ways to find it now'. For every individual who has 'always known' they are gay or trans, there may be four others who only realize it after observing others, or learning that the vocabulary exists.

Likewise, abled people want to believe that all disabilities are major and obvious- To the extent that many are 'simplified' to make abled society understand. To be blind is to be completely unable to see (even though many blind people have vision, it's just not vision that allows movement through abled society). To be in a wheelchair is to be completely unable to move your legs (even though it's a mobility aid that assists in many different disabilities). To abled society, the disabled need to say "can't" where the real meaning is "shouldn't", because if it's just "shouldn't" they will be doubted and pushed. That we all, in disabilities both invisible and visible, so frequently need to fight to find the truth and have it acknowledged under these misconceptions. (And the whole other story that is fighting to keep respect when we are acknowledged.)

I want Entropic Float to continue being this kind of eye-opener, to help disabled people realize that they do in fact have a disability. That it isn't 'this hard for everybody', that it's not that 'everyone experiences this'. That the ways you've managed to move through life in spite of the difficulties aren't what's normal, and that it's amazing that you've managed this long, but now that you have the words- I hope you can give yourself grace and accommodation. It's important that we all can.
