Potentially unpopular opinion but I just rewatched Killers of the Flower Moon and I genuinely think Leonardo DiCaprio deserves to win an Oscar for his performance. Don’t get me wrong, I’m rooting the most for Lily Gladstone because her performance STEALS the film completely, but the scene where Ernest finds out his youngest child, Little Anna, died is so incredibly well acted and heartbreaking. Because while Ernest was a horrible human being who poisoned his wife and assisted in the genocide of so many people, I do think he genuinely had love for his children because in the book the film is based on, it says that it was most likely Little Anna’s death - as well as seeing Mollie’s face in court and the realisation of the evidence piling against him - that caused him to testify against his uncle.

(This is not me excusing him btw, his grandchildren quite rightly hate his guts for what he did and he should never have been released from prison)

Whew, it’s more than 3 hours long, most of it we already know how it’s going. In the end, we are just waiting for the comeuppance.
Killers of the Flower Moon is a 2023 American epic western crime drama film co-written, produced, and directed by Martin Scorsese. Eric Roth and Scorsese based their screenplay on the 2017 non-fiction book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, by David Grann.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone lead an ensemble cast, including Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow and Brendan Fraser.

Osage Murders: Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' Captures the Gripping True Story
A lot of people will sit here and debate whether the length of a movie is something worth critiquing. It truly all depends on what kind of story you like. The story we see in Killers of the Flower Moon is a historical story worthy of the massive 3.5 hour runtime it has.
The film takes place in the 1920s and sees Ernest Burkhart return from the war. He returns to the heart of the Osage where his Uncle William Hale resides. Ernest and his uncle, known as King Hale, begin a series of deadly murders in order to attain the headrights to Osage Oil money from Ernest's wife Mollie.
Why the 3.5 hour runtime is justified is the amount of moving parts and story this film has to cover. Nothing feels out of place, and the pace of the movie is deliberately set, so the looming tension is always there. It feels like any given time, the burdens of their actions will come crashing down upon them. DiCaprio and DeNiro compliment each other very well in this film. They both bring their A-Game in what are very important roles for portraying the history that surrounds this event. Lily Gladstone is the scene stealer in this film as Mollie Burkhart. She goes toe to toe with two heavy weight actors who could easily be described as the best actors of their respective generations. She shines brilliantly among these stars and likely will be rewarded come award season.

Scorsese is one of the best directors of all time. This movie only adds to his legacy of someone who wants to use his art form for education as much as he can. That seems even more evident in the last decade. Silence, The Irishman, and now Killers of the Flower Moon are all based on novels that explore true stories. They are stories that will one day help educate people through art. You can bicker about the length if that is the one gripe you want to find. Sure, speak on it. This movie is deliberately that long to ensure that each necessary focal point of the story is not glossed over. Only a filmmaker with a delicate eye could keep you engaged in a film of this nature. It takes a lot of precision to recreate from history and do the era and the actual story justice.
Killers of the Flower Moon is exactly the movie you expect. It's not one of those movies relying on a grandiose Hollywood ending of magical CGIed moments. It tells a story that is filled with murder, violence, deceit, and racism towards the Osage people. It should leave you uncomfortable. This stuff happened. Whether people want to complain about the length or not. These events were real and deserved to be told with the care Scorsese took to make sure no details were left out. These are the kinds of stories we need to see more of. It will only help educate the next generation on how to avoid the mistakes of the past.

Man, what a film. I'm really really glad Marty made this and I was really touched by Robbie Robertson's work on it (RIP King). I do have criticisms, but they don't take way from what I saw. I think it is a net good that Martin Scorsese would highlight this story. I had read the book this summer in preparation and nothing has ever made me want to divest from oil as much as this dark history. I think that White America needs an interloper in order to be disarmed for a lesson to be learned or a story told. I think that is a measly and pathetic fact. I wish that Ernest Burkhart wasn't portrayed as sympathetically or as stupid as I found him to be in this. I wish we got more voice over from Lilly Gladstone's character, Molly. The shot of the platform when more wolves arrive with her voice over on revenge was chilling. I was also extremely horrified by the audience's reaction and the amount of laughter I heard. People laughed at Lizzie's being beckoned by her ancestors to join her. I feel like in that moment, it was the most ashamed I've ever been to be white. They also laughed when the phrase "they're just Indian" was uttered (I can't pinpoint the exact moment-it's a long film!). I do think the runtime was really well used, and while I didn't feel the scene in the Mason Lodge was really necessary or could have been shorter, I thought Robert De Niro smashed it. In the very first conversation with Bill and Ernest, you learn all you need to about William K Hale (i.e. what this man values through the questions he asks). That scene and its dialogue was masterful. I hope it used in lessons on microagressions. The radio play bit absolutely shocked me (Okay, Wes Anderson), and Marty reading the final lines was really really something. I couldn't help after seeing this but think about how Oppenheimer (2023) chooses to show no violence against the victims of the subject, whereas Killers of the Flower Moon cuts away from absolutely none of the violence. I found it really graphic. I can see how traumatic it'd be for a Native person to watch this, but for colonized White people (not sure on the best wording-but once again, probably the majority of a Scorsese audience) it speaks to the fact that White America has looked away from the transgressions (too kind a word) against Native Peoples for too long. White America MUST confront the truth of our being here and the oppression that lives on today, especially in light of never actually acknowledging what we've done and do to make it so (and now the banning of Critical Race Theory in schools across the country). In some ways I feel like this is Marty saying, screw the crowd who complains about wokeness. I hope that the take away is new support for the Indigenous populations of the Americas of today. I found that last image to be uplifting. There is so much going on in our world as I write this that pertains to stolen land, revenge, and murder and this movie does not offer any solutions. The first step to restorative justice remains naming the issues and for that, I hold immense gratitude for this film.

He was just too dumb and handsome to know otherwise. Or so he says.
Ernest Burkhart can relate.

cousin greg being on a whole other level in succession s2
This is basically Larry David. But if he was young, cute, committing criminal conspiracies, very, very tall and an evil Wall Street guy. And probably gay and in love with his cousin in law.
