((From @storiedocs Esther to Jim and Len)) Two boxes. In both, a datachip and a note.
“For the Captain:
Did I ever mention that I also cheated on the Kobayashi Maru? The first three times I took it, I was bored out of my skull, it was so scripted. All aboard the Railroad, right? So I improved it. I mean, I got called before a tribunal and all that, but everyone basically agreed that, though I completely missed the point of the exercise, I’d made an excellent high-difficulty training program, so they kept it in the computers. Here’s an extended copy, with some easter eggs. It’s tough, but open-ended and beatable. Thought you might like it.
~Ensign Morgenstern”
“To Doctor McCoy,
I’ve compiled a Pan-Federation multilingual medical dictionary for you, in case of language barrier problems. I wanted to give it to you in print but it would take up a whole shelf. Feel free to replicate physical copies for yourself, it’s already optimized for standard encyclopedia size. There are also files for stamping the covers with a custom design.
~Your frequent patient, Esther”
Jim and McCoy had been having one of their relaxing drinks when the boxes came. They opened them up curiously.
Jim beamed at his, and he was excited to look over what Esther had done. She was truly bright, and he loved how she rose to different challenges. He could see her as captain of her own starship some day. He sent a quick thank you to Esther over his PADD, knowing he'd have to repay the gift somehow.
McCoy ran his thumb over the datachip, a gleam in his eyes. First off, he'd be printing physical copies for all the different species that they had on the ship, and then he'd be studying them--especially the damn Vulcan one, since Spock was nearly as bad as Jim at finding trouble.
"She's sweet," Jim said.
"Yeah, she is. Good kid." McCoy smiled. "Sometimes too much like you." He smiled fondly, though.
