Nearly two decades ago, when we were planning our wedding, I made a very firm decision not to look at any wedding planning magazines or anything with marketing material for wedding products. I wanted our wedding to be uniquely us, and I also wanted not to be bombarded by product advertisement and beautiful photo shoots of very expensive weddings. Consequently, maybe we wasted a little bit of time reinventing the wheel, but we had a wedding we were very happy with that only cost perhaps four thousand dollars at most, probably not that much, spread out over our finances and those of both our families. Our guests went home with live potted plants that we'd paid pennies for at end of season, our florist had a great time getting to design a bouquet that tested her skills because I didn't have any preconceived ideas, my dress was utterly unique--and I really do feel that those magazines would have had a corrosive effect on all that.

When we moved to this property three years ago, I spent a LOT of time looking at images online, trying to form a coherent vision for a property that was at the time a fairly blank slate. I found myself scrolling through a lot of Russian dacha Instagrams, of all things, and they unlocked something for me. Seeing the same homey make-do decorations and techniques I grew up around a continent away, the same plywood cutout old ladies and tractor tire flower planters, somehow chewed through that last binding cord of classism, and suddenly I saw the art in it. The expression of a desire to embellish and beautify, even when you have very little, even when all you can afford is things the more well-to-do consider trash. I saw the exuberance of human love for beauty in a brilliant flower bed planted next to a collapsing shed--it didn't need to be perfect to be worthwhile. They didn't wait til everything was pristine to start enjoying things. And now I earnestly and unironically covet my own version of the tractor-tire Christmas tree at the farm down the road.

We've spent centuries now idolizing the manicured estates and quaint country retreats of the European wealthy elites. We've turned thousands of miles of living ecosystem into grass deserts in service of this vision. We need to start deliberately retraining our tastes. Seek out images of a different idea of beauty and peace. I'm not telling you what it'll be. I'm telling you this is not involuntary. You can participate. You can look at the many beautiful examples of native xeriscaping for arid climates, or photos of chaotic tangles of wildflowers, tamed by narrow paths, a bench under an arbor overwhelmed with wisteria. Maybe instead of trying to get lawn to grown under your mature trees, you'd actually get far more joy out of a patch of dirt. A hammock. A firepit ringed with log sections for seats.

You can free yourself from harmful conventions of taste and beauty, and you do it through imagining something better.

Okay so like—maybe I snapped. Maybe I had one too many matcha lattes and accidentally opened the comments section. My bad. But why is the internet so obsessed with turning every female creator into a public property with a user manual? I swear, the moment a girl dares to glow up, speak up, clap back, or—God forbid—get a boob job, people act like she burned the constitution. And I’m just sitting here, with my emotional support hoodie and a rage migraine, wondering: when did we decide that personal growth is betrayal? When did female autonomy become public offense? Why is every girl online either a saint or a sellout? No in-between. I’m so over this. Like fully, aggressively, “make-an-essay-and-quote-it-on-Tumblr” over this. So here. Enjoy the thesis, besties.

Her platform may have helped others love their bodies, but that never meant she signed a social contract to remain unchanged for the sake of public comfort. This expectation is both emotionally parasitic and ethically absurd. The truth is, Clara Dao owes no one the stagnation of her former self. She owes only herself the permission to evolve.

On Lala Sadi:

The vitriol toward Lala Sadi reeks of performative moralism disguised as cultural critique. What people call “inauthentic” or “too much” is actually a coded rejection of female enthusiasm, exuberance, and non-linear emotional narratives. We live in a digital ecosystem where a woman being loud, passionate, or dramatic is criminalized under the pretense of “annoyance” or “dishonesty”—as if performativity isn’t the nature of content creation itself. Lala’s content has matured. Her voice now holds more depth, more self-awareness, and yet she remains unapologetically herself—which, ironically, is exactly what everyone demanded of her. But when real emotion doesn’t align with the public’s projection of what “real” should look like, they call it fake. She was never a liar. People just don't know what it means to be a full, layered, chaotic woman on the internet.

On Apoorva Mukhija:

Apoorva Mukhija, or “The Rebel Kid,” is not the villain of her narrative—she is its most brutal casualty. What occurred on that stage was not “banter” or “harmless teasing.” It was a microcosm of a deeply embedded misogynistic power dynamic, where a woman reacting at all becomes a moral infraction. The way her assertiveness was reframed into aggression reveals society’s deeply conditioned fear of the angry woman—a woman who speaks up, who doesn’t laugh off humiliation, who doesn’t self-deprecate to cushion male egos. The threats she received—death, rape, acid—are not just online “hate.” They are gendered terrorism. They are meant to frighten women into silence and submission. This isn't drama. This is the digital enactment of patriarchal control.

Furthermore, the hypocrisy here is bone-deep. When men clap back or “roast” others on the internet, they’re crowned as clever and bold. When women do it, especially in response to something violating, they’re painted as vindictive and attention-seeking. Apoorva didn’t attack someone for the sake of virality—she defended herself when disrespected publicly. And yet somehow, her defense became the crime. This is moral distortion at its finest. It’s the public convincing itself that women must earn the right to be angry. That women must be pleasantly oppressed. What people wanted wasn’t an apology—they wanted to punish her for not making herself smaller in a moment that demanded strength.

Finally, let us speak of the silence. The influencers, the male creators, the audience that laughed or stayed quiet or rebranded their complicity as neutrality. Their indifference was not passive—it was violently loud. Apoorva stood alone. She was devoured for breaking character in a play that demands women smile through pain. But she didn’t. Understanding how we deal with the limitations that reality imposes on us is essential so that we develop a minimum of empathy with those around us and learn to deal with a feeling that sooner or later afflicts everyone: Self-repulsion. But how can we always keep moving forward, without losing the sparkle in our eyes or forgetting what we dreamed of so much at the beginning of the exuberant journey that is life? In a society that is constantly judging or belittling those who live outside our own bubble, always cultivating poor ideas based on pre-existing precepts and prejudices that were absorbed due to generations of exhausting experiences in environments full of arrogance, thus making us frivolous creatures with a worldview absolutely limited to one's own navel.

it’s a sickeningly beautiful day. sunlight, filtered through exuberant palm tree crowns, shines on her feet, the bloom effect blurring them beautifully against the dark wood flooring of the walkway. the distant chatter is almost fully drowned in the orchestra of warbling birds, their flight ruffling the tropical trees enclosing the passage from every direction. beyond them, running water echoes through the foliage in luscious detail.

jiyeon imagines her own black clad figure as an intrusion on the idyllic scenery, hat pulled low over her eyes and jacket peeling off slumped shoulders. when she closes her eyes, she ignores the chirping and the ruffling leaves, focuses instead on the quiet thudding of the soles of her sandals dragging over the wood boards.

right now, jiyeon’s supposed to reunite with her group back in the main lodge for green smoothies and a mindful activity designed to connect her to her surroundings and inspire the realization of her active role in the ecosystem of an infinite binary code system. and to be fair, that would not be entirely repulsive to her on a good day. she’s not offended by inanity and vapidness – she’d argue that’s the environment she typically thrives in.

but good days have been running scarce. it’s why she agreed to come to the retreat at her therapist’s suggestion in the first place, and the counterintuitiveness of that decision only dawns on her when she’s pulled into conversations about the power of self love. after struggling to elaborate on the transformative experience of sunrise yoga for the fifth time by the end of the first day, jiyeon is at her most antisocial. she fixates on every little annoying affectation of speech, every unflattering cosmetic update, counting the times they repeat self aggrandizing anecdotes.

so right now, jiyeon can only bring herself to put one foot in front of the other and not stop. she might hole herself in her lodge for the rest of the vacation if she stops moving. the birds are singing, the trees are rustling, the water is trickling, and jiyeon feels miserable. that’s the new itinerary for the day.

I'm counting this as my response to @chopper-base's Last Line Challenge (your fic looks like it's going to break my heart, btw, and I need it), as well as @rosechi (you take all the time you need - those few lines have certainly garnered my interest, and I am happy to wait for what you're creating!) and @ladyzirkonia's (what a taste little teaser that was!!) Wednesday WIP tags.

Given that I'm using this for both challenges, I am shamelessly offering a large chunk. Because. Reasons. Also, this one's both super exciting and super complicated!! One of my Asks was for this group, @clone-force-333, who, apparently, go about "attacking" certain people on here with words of encouragement when they need them most, which is just fucking adorable! It also means the characters they gave me are both OCs, so there's been so, so much chatting to figure out how to portray these guys! This is going to be a painful one, but it's actually super fun to get to play with such wildly new peoples! They both had such heartbreaking stories, and I'm really hoping to do them justice.

K, here's what I have so far:

Despite the wealth of foreign planets he’d been to, the incalculable variety of life forms he’d seen and ecosystems that had proven just as deadly as they were beautiful, still Ghost occasionally found himself stunned by what mysteries awaited him just beyond the metal doors of the transport shuttle. There had been no war here; no endless theft of lives tallied as fiscal loses in the stead of fatalities as fallen brothers left crimson rivers staining soil that ignorantly devoured the nutrients with a gratitude far more potent than the Republic had ever feigned pretense of.

This world was untouched by intelligent life; innocent and brilliant and ultimately doomed as the Empire steadily made their way ever closer that they might strip the wilds of every shred of value until only a barren husk remained. That was why they had come; because the treasured that laid hidden in shimmering sapphire foliage streaked with something far too near silver to appear real held the potential to solve whatever great scientific mystery Dex currently found himself obsessed with.

Ghost’s dark grey helmet shifted slightly, attention drawn back to the slim man already treading animatedly toward the distant dance of singing trees and hidden brush. Even from a distance, he could hear the subtle whirr of machinery voicing the scientist’s every step. It had taken months for him to offer the origins of his disability. Ghost wasn’t sure what prompted the reveal, nor why he’d taken so long to open up, but nothing about the injury had changed things between them. The older clone still regarded the nat-born with a deep-seated distrust and disdain despite Dex’s almost obtrusively joyful demeanor.

The change between them had been sudden. Violent. He couldn’t remember exactly what the smaller man had said; just that it had something to do with the chips, and that Ghost had lashed out in a way that finally shattered Dex’s infallible exuberance. They’d shouted. It was the first time he’d heard such betrayed anger in that normally soft voice. They’d roared at each other until both shook with anger, fists clenched, teeth bared. And then something had changed.

Heated words crumbled into broken sobs revealing truths neither expected to ever allow voice. He didn’t remember who’d been the first to reach out for the other, couldn’t remember how they’d fallen into each other in search of a comfort they’d suffered without for far too long, but everything between them was different now. Snide words were laced with a fondness audible to even distant strangers; the silence between them as Ghost merely lingered calmly in Dex’s lab held a gentleness he’d never felt before, and when the scientist got it in his head that he needed some unheard of ingredient found only in the most dangerous of climates, the clone didn’t hesitate in accompanying him.

Which is precisely how he’d found himself on this unnamed, untouched world of sapphire trees and mauve soil, gaze trailing around them for any sign of danger, be it from flora or fauna, that might threaten the brilliant, infuriating man before him.

here is another little writing exercise i did today. it’s from the start with this podcast with joseph fink and jeffery cranor. the idea is that you go to a random number generator, write down ten numbers between 1 and 100, and each number is your word count for a paragraph

below the tree line. under the thick layer of moss covering the ground. trickling through earth heavy with the dispersing nutrients of dead things the spirit of the swamp envelopes the quiet ghost of a little girl. slowly, she opens her eyes.

a pack of furious ants march over her hiding place, preparing for violence. she watches in the way that ghosts do; inevitably. from below one can hear the muffled sounds of birds and the occasional deer scratching itchy velvet from its antlers on a tree, but here a busy ecosystem of worms, fungus, and human remains rage and dance silently.

the war begins.

the fungi don’t notice because they are wrapped up completely in the celebration following their discovery of a dead worm. there are visions of a future full of new spores and knowledge that is just inches out of reach. a living worm several feet bellow the exuberant fungus discovers a salt deposit that will utterly change the course of that worms life. the girl tires of the excitement and follows the line of a tree root up to a fox den where week old kits are sleeping with their paws pressed into the warm fur of their mother.

when the little ghost had first arrived in the forest the fox had not given birth yet. she would sit in her den, moving only to eat and drink water, each step labored. living seems so difficult.

death, she thought, is easier; much more straight forward.

one of the smallest ants rushes back to the ant hill to tell the others that the battle has been lost. he is missing a leg and is weak when he finally arrives. there is utter pandemonium at the news. they realize it might be time to move the queen to a new nest.

the smallest fox kit wakes up from a nightmare, though the little ghost can’t quite fathom what a week old baby who has never left the warmth of its fox den would know to be afraid of. when the kit falls back asleep the ghost notices an odd bubbling to its breathing that doesn’t bode well. everything ends eventually.

the little ghost doesn’t remember anything about being alive. maybe she has always been a little swamp ghost.

in the heart of the swamp a ghost closes her eyes. a queen leaves her home forever. a worm plunges into the mineral rich earth. a fox mother wakes to the sound of one of her kits whining. the sun warms the overstory and the light sinks into the world. who will tell them they are small?
