Nursing Do’s and Don’ts: Nursing beyond the bedside
Nurses typically work in various settings such as hospitals, doctors offices, schools and outpatient clinics. Often, nursing and bedside care are so tied together, many nurses don’t even consider their options outside of these locations. Whether you’re a new nurse who has discovered they don’t actually like patient care, or a more experienced nurse who is ready for a new opportunity within the field of nursing. Nurses must understand that just because they don’t find a fit with bedside care, doesn’t mean they can’t be a useful resource in another area of the patient care experience. Many options exist for nurses who would rather stay away from bedside care. So, nurses shouldn’t feel guilty about wanting to make the switch:
Don’t: Feel guilty about not liking patient care and wanting to find your niche in the field of nursing.
Do: Explore different options in the nursing field until you find one that you feel truly is a good fit, and makes you happy.
Here are some of the other options in nursing that are not patient care (Nightingale Blog): teaching, research, pharmaceutical companies, government, insurance and law firms, private companies. These areas in nursing are still essential to the field of nursing and could be a great fit for the nurse who doesn’t see themselves at the bedside. Again, one shouldn’t feel guilty for making the switch.
