It was called a phone book. You usually got a new one once per year - it included adds, everyone's addresses/ phone numbers (although if I'm remembering correctly you could ask that yours not be included), a complete business section so you could find a plumber or electrician or what have you. We still have one but they're about an 1/8 of their original size.

2024 Horror Challenge: [89/?]

Yes, the annual challenge is technically over since I always declare Halloween as the last day of it, but honestly, I might just have to keep it going on the whole year from now on at this point because, let's face it, horror movies still get released after October. And well, I have thoughts to share about certain ones. lol Now I'll watch older movies for the first time during this little limbo between challenges and not type up a review just because that's gonna slip my mind tbh. And it's not like I have a real audience for this thing anyway (despite plenty of people liking my reviews) so what's it matter, you know? That said, these newer movies, I have thoughts to share, and it only makes sense to get those thoughts out here where I can ramble for myself. Anyway, I kept hearing about this movie but felt like I wasn't getting the clearest idea what it actually was. Having watched it, I do get why. It's a very genre-bending movie that isn't necessarily going to be for everyone, which I think is why its rating keeps lower little by little each time I see it. I can't say that it's a complete 10/10 for me, but I actually think it mostly worked for what it was. I'm sure people went into it expecting a pure romcom since yes, its plot certainly had its inspiration from Beauty and the Beast, and it has plenty of that vibe, but it does also focus on Melissa's character outside of that where it's more about her dealing with her prior heartbreak & wanting approval from her ex, and then, without spoiling the ending, it takes the narrative a step further in a way that leaves some things up for interpretation for its audience. I personally didn't hate that the story went that way. I don't know if it necessarily stuck the landing when that happened, but I think Melissa sold it very well. I saw someone saying she was miscasted, but I actually liked getting to see her play a much softer character than I'm used to. It felt refreshing. Now again, I don't know if I'd say she hit every beat perfectly imo (I'm thinking more when her character was crying, and yeah, I know it was meant to be funny, but it did get a little shrilly at certain parts), but I think it was a great career move on her part. It was a good chance to show her range as an actress and she made me laugh. The strongest part of the movie for sure was her chemistry with Tommy Dewey as Monster. I think he really helped her make this movie work because he's so present in his scenes with her, and he definitely had me dying with laughter at certain parts. I really enjoyed their dynamic. Also gotta mention, I love that Meghann Fahy is finally getting some proper love lately since I adored her on The Bold Type, and while she doesn't necessarily get much to work with here, she was perfectly cast since ofc everyone's gonna love her. lol What's interesting is you'll watch it and wonder, so where's the horror element beyond him being a monster? Well, it comes near the end, but I promise there's something. It's not a scary movie by any means, but there's a bloody sequence, that's all I'll say. I know this movie was probably a hard sell to producers, and that's why it got the small theatrical release, but it's a solid enough indie movie that was trying to be a little different. Overall, I enjoyed it. If I had to place it in my earlier rankings, I think I would have wanted to put it in my Honorable Mentions category. I feel like it worked enough for me that feels right as a placement.

Jaller Ru-Fahi

…Because I couldn’t not include him. Realistically, all Toa Mahri a good to some extent, but this is peak Toa material right here. One of the first I acquired, one of the best looking ones, too. The base body is practically the same as the original, with some twists, but I mostly made him thicker and upgraded his sword, which is better with a guard and a proper handle. Well, that, and the Hannah, obviously. Sure, the original one was cute, but here me out :

Look at it, and behold ! It might be slightly bigger than the original, have only four legs, and need a larger chain (which I found just earlier in a box of misc Hero Factory pieces, and is better than a basic Lego chain), but doesn’t it look very cute and wholesome and dangerous ? Also, I gave it actual joints, because it deserves it, and removed the Kordak blaster because it didn’t need it anymore. I really love making arthropods with bionicle (I have more for later~).

Pohatu Ru-Fahi

Definitely looks awesome. The original is Pohatu Phantoka from the Rockoh T3 set (because I have one and a half of this set). It is the coolest version of Pohatu (because orange>brown, obviously). Lot of modifications on that one, from the custom jet pack to the arms and the legs. The arc pieces for the front arms are more or less of placeholders because I was niece a good piece to make the arms larger, but it turned out alright. The blades are also stolen from the half Rockoh, and the piece underneath, if anyone recognises it, is from Pohatu Nuva, because it’s a neat reference. And the tube is somehow remaining in the Kanohi, despot the fact that there is not any proper connection for it tand hold onto.

Also, can we talk about this leg ? If you ignore how incredibly illegal this whole piece is (ball joint stuck by the light grey part and small black and grey piece not completely connected to the rest), I think that’s the best shape I managed to get so far, and it reflects nicely what I have envisioned (Pohatu being able to run/jump easily because of the shape). And, it had the added advantage of fitting perfectly with the orange piece above when the knee bends.

Last but not least, I also have started a potential candidate for Toa of air, despite a lack of proper Kanohi, even with my extensive collection. My first candidate would have been Lewa Phantoka from the Axalara T9, but this one has a special place in my heart, so won’t be touching it and it will proudly remain in his shelf (along with the untouched Pohatu). So, maybe another of this series soon ! But probably not. And if I miss posting custom bionicle too much, I have a (complete) collection of entirely custom Toa, but I’m afraid they won’t fit in my studio (they’re big, too big).

I LOVED the first half of s4 but the second half felt like a rushed mess. I was so psyched we were getting a longer season but now? I’ve totally changed my mind, the 10 episode seasons were better. Careful what you wish for i guess.

Your favorite novels/shows/movies: The Chronicles of Narnia will always have a special place in my heart and my absolute favorite. I grew up on those books and those movies and I miss the world of it and the original cast a lot?? The Six of Crows duology is a close second, even though you have to read The Grisha Trilogy before it and I, uh..... did not enjoy it as much. I love all those classic YA novels like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Divergent, The Hunger Games, etc. I also really love Little Women and it’s been one of my favorite books since I was a kid. I don’t know what’s hip and cool with the youngins nowadays but I’m currently reading A heart so fierce and broken by Brigid Kemmerer. I also really like mystery novels but the ones I’ve been reading haven’t been good so if you have any recs for me, hit me up!! I really love Mayans MC, The Bold Type, anything by Marvel tbh but especially The Punisher and Marvel’s Runaways, The Voice, The OA (it was cancelled after 2 seasons which I HATE but you guys need to watch this okay this show is a MASTERPIECE), Sense8, Schitt’s Creek (I’m still on the first season, but I totally understand the love for this show), On my block (currently waiting for Season 3 which will come in 2 days!!!), One Tree Hill and Game of Thrones. Also, I’m a sucker for reality tv that’s actually good so Are you the one? is an amazing show!! I’m currently watching Breaking Bad and Bojack Horseman on Netflix! As for movies, I have a special place in my heart for the Fast and Furious movies, Creed (yes MBJ is my everything) and She’s the Man.

What you’re most excited for in the group: Literally everything??? It’s been awhile since I’ve been this excited to join a group and I just can’t wait to develop my characters and to have them interact with everyone else’s characters. I haven’t been in a dark and mature roleplay in awhile so I’m really excited to delve into that, and just write and form all these connections.

her tongue poking out of her mouth, she quickly ( and illegibly ) continues scribbling her notes. “ okay, nearly done! thanks for helping me out with this project too, vera. i owe you one! ” ruby squints at the crumpled paper and holds it up. “ the last question is... if your upperclassman is a team leader: what has responsibility taught you about yourself? ” a blink. “ wait, how do you learn things about yourself? agh, i'm so confused. ”

question is repeated quietly. almost wistfully. she turns her head to observe their two teams, talking to one another. renji’s soft smile, his patience with yang’s rapid-fire questioning. naoko, listening intently, her sole focus on weiss - she was grateful for her respect, and her opinions. and fahy, smiling sweetly as blake tried to get a conversation going.

“… growing up, renji was one of my closest friends… he always backed me up. but… i was always running into everything headfirst. i was young, i was brash, and i never thought about anything before acting. it was always act first, maybe question it later. and renji always backed me up. that is how it was.”

gaze moves to her hands, laced together on the desk, thumbs fidgeting with each other. ears are pressed flat against her head, rounded faunas traits almost blending in to her hair. “… and then i was in charge of a whole team, three other lives,” she almost laughs at herself, head shaking. “i had no idea what i was doing. i was used to it always being me. always jumping into danger, i never really thought of what responsibility meant. and i realized that we were all so different. we all handled danger differently. i jumped in. renji backed us up. fahy stayed back for overwatch, and naoko was… everywhere. and i didn’t know what i was doing. i almost got us killed. ha. you thought your first day was rough, sweetheart? ask naoko about the manticore.

… i was afraid. i did not know at all what i was doing. i was convinced the professor had made a mistake.  that it should have been renji. he was always good at keeping people together. perhaps naoko - she is intelligent, and calculating. fahy has the compassion to look after us all, and never complain. but me? i… only thought of myself.”

the smile is back, and it is different. it is confident, and happy, and proud. powder blue eyes look back into silver, ears perk up and she begins to radiate that same warmth from earlier.

“… and then i realized… it was not just about me anymore. i had a team. a family. the responsibility taught me how to be strong. how to depend on others - and be depended on. the responsibility was heavy at times - so heavy. and when i thought i could not carry it anymore… they were there to lift me up.

if i were not the leader of a team, i very well may have failed before i even started. my responsibility has taught me to trust. to stop, step back, and think. to consider my options, to find out really what is best for us all. and, for those around us. i am not the same girl i was when i first started, ruby. and i am glad for that. i am stronger. and i have them to thank for it.

you have been given a special gift, mon ami. being a leader is not easy. and, at times, it may feel like you are misplaced, as well. but you have been put here for a reason. you are strong, and passionate, and you are driven. you almost remind me of myself,” she laughs a bit, reaching a hand across and placing it on the girl’s wrist.

“but never for a moment forget what you have. who you have. when you are able to put all of your trust into your team, when you can all act as one with each other, both on and off the battlefield, you will understand what i mean.

you are never alone. no distance, no trials, no adversaries will ever take what you form here in these halls, on these grounds. trust your team, and allow them to trust you. give them reason to trust you. and you will find no greater lesson than what they will give you.”

she sighs, eyes closing for a moment as she takes her time to collect herself. another airy laugh from the faunas, and she places her hand back and against her own chest. “mon dieu, listen to me ramble. i am sorry - i probably should have kept it short, no?”

What's the bold type?

I’m so glad you asked.

The Bold Type is Freeform’s new dramedy. The show is inspired by the life of Joanna Coles, Cosmopolitan’s former editor-in-chief, and features Katie Stevens (Faking It), Aisha Dee (Chasing Life) and Meghann Fahy (Next to Normal) who portray Jane, Kat and Sutton respectively. The series is centered around these three characters, who all work for Scarlet magazine, and their friendship, and will explore their lives as they learn to find their own voices and explore their sexuality, identity, love, fashion, et cetera.

Even though the show is only officially airing July 11th at 9pm on Freeform, as a two-hour premiere event, the pilot has already aired as a preview I can’t remember when so it’s available if anyone wants to watch it and I have so trust me when I say this is going to be an amazing show.

Jane, Kat and Sutton are all incredibly funny and compelling characters and the show makes sure to give each of them their fair share of screen time. In addition to these great characters (I really don’t want to start rambling about them because, first of all, we would be here all night and, secondly, I really want you guys to watch it and don’t want to ruin all the fun), we’ve also got to meet a character who is a Muslim woman and also a lesbian and a feminist who explains why wearing a hijab makes her a feminist, you’re gonna fall in love, I guarantee you. The girls’ boss is such a mother to these girls, I am genuinely in love.

Just... Give the show a try. I was half way through it and I already wanted ten more episodes and a second season. So, really, watch the pilot. If you’re an American citizen who can watch it live on Freeform please do, as the viewers do count, and, if you’re not, try to create some buzz about the show on the internet. It’s honestly one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while and I really don’t want to see it get cancelled just because people didn’t know it existed to begin with.
