Living with feature phone in the smartphone era
Hello! In this post I would like to tell you about my Nokia 3210 4G as my daily driver and reducing social media.
This is not a rant. Everyone can use a device which suits you the most. I was always a Nokia fanboy, I had different Nokia models through years, I used also Nokia Lumia 520 with Windows Phone 8.1 (which I feel like is the best smartphone os to this day) and smartphones with android.
Nokia 3210 4G came out in 2024 as a new version of Nokia 3210 from 90s. There are 2 version, both with S30+ platforms, but in Asian market, there is also avaible models with Cloud phone platforms, which allows you to use Social media, Youtube, Youtube Shorts, Youtube Music, Accuweather and many different apps. I have the European version in Black color.
As HMD, the maker of Nokia phones states on their boxes on new Nokias: "If it´s important, they´ll call or text." and I agree with them.
SMS, MMS (yes I still like to use them), Calling with Volte Support, Radio, MP3 Player, Camera, Compact Opera Mini Browser and many more features makes my Nokia 3210 4G my most favorite feature phone.
There is one major thing I don´t like on social media these days. They push products to your timeline. Back in the day, when I started using Instagram, around 2013, it was meant for photo sharing and comments (no DMs, no reels). Your timeline was updated in order that people who you follow posted.
I noticed that I felt often overwhelmed and anxious by social media and I knew it´s time to make the change.
Now I try to move my social media visiting mainly on my notebook, which I will check in few minutes and I won´t stay in scrolling loop. I decided to try Tumblr again, make blogs about my favorite artists, Formula 1, feature phones, radios and many other topic.

US Feature Phone Market Stages Comeback as Gen Z, Millennials Advocate Digital Detox
Tumblr media
US Feature Phone Market Stages Comeback as Gen Z, Millennials Advocate Digital Detox: Counterpoint Research. - The US feature phone market is more crowded and competitive now as OEMs enter agreements with carriers. - Feature phone sales are forecast to reach 2.8 million in 2023 with stable sales continuing in the near term. - New hardware configurations like eSIM or NFC can make devices more relevant for today’s consumers.
Feature phone market have made a resurgence due to digital detox and Gen Z/millennials
Feature phones in the US market have made a resurgence as Gen Z and millennials are advocating for digital detoxes due to the mental health concerns brought on by smartphones and social media. Hashtags like #bringbackfliphones on TikTok have garnered millions of views leading to the increased adoption of feature phones by younger consumers looking to adhere to movements like digital detoxing, minimalist lifestyles and unplugging. Given the relatively cheap price point of feature phones ($20-$50 with a prepaid carrier and $50-$100 unlocked), more people are trying out these devices and sharing their experiences on social media. The market is more crowded now, TCL and HMD are leading but competition from Schok, Sonim, and white-label makers like Tinno are entering agreements with carriers. Smartphones were widely adopted almost instantly when they arrived. Due to this, the US feature phone market shrank significantly over the past 10 years. Currently, the feature phone market contributes to only a little more than a 2% share of overall handset sales in the US. Among the players catering to this segment of the market, TCL, which manufactures feature phones for major carriers in both branded and white-label capacities, leads the pack with a 43% share due to its strong presence on carrier channels. HMD ranks second with a 26% share, while other smaller players make up for the rest of the market. Additionally, carrier and OEM tie-ups play an important role in the dynamics. The big three US carriers – AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile – are exploring different feature phone OEM options due to which the US feature phone market has grown more crowded lately, especially with carriers moving away from TCL devices and trying out smaller OEMs instead, like Tinno and FIH which have manufactured devices for AT&T’s white-labeled feature phones. Sonim and Kyocera, which provide ruggedized devices, are Verizon’s feature phone brands, while Schok and hot pepper are T-Mobile’s. Feature phone sales are forecast to reach 2.8 million in 2023 with continued stable sales in the near term as niche demand drivers maintain sales. Feature phones still hold their place in the market and are likely to see consistent shipments, helped by their affordability and durability to suit specific use cases. Although the growth in numbers may not be huge, the demand from consumers looking for a feature phone as a digital detox mechanism will continue. Additionally, B2B sales may drive some demand as feature phones simplify costs for businesses. Furthermore, tourists and other consumers needing a cheap disposable feature phone will also continue to keep sales stable.

Image from Counterpoint Research New hardware configurations like eSIM or NFC can make devices more relevant for modern consumers wishing to simplify their tech gadgets but still interact seamlessly in the digital world There is a consumer base looking for devices that are minimalistic but also have features that are relevant to staying connected in today’s world. The design and specifications of feature phones have not changed much over the last few years. This is one of the factors that keep consumers from purchasing a feature phone. The addition of some new hardware configurations and features that are abreast with the current trends while still maintaining the simplicity of usage may open more gates for the growth of feature phones. NFC is one such feature. NFC can enable payments, home automation, quick pairing, and make public transport access more convenient for users. Similarly, eSIMs may also be a great hardware integration as it may attract consumers to adopt a feature phone as a companion device that they can easily switch to from their main device in situations where they do not want to bring out their expensive smartphone. Adding these attributes would help make feature phones more relevant for day-to-day use. To see the full report visit Counterpoint Research here Source: Counterpoint Research Read the full article

In today's hyper-connected world, where smartphones are practically an extension of ourselves, a surprising trend is emerging: digital detox. Gen Z, the generation born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, is leading the charge against constant screen time, seeking ways to disconnect and reconnect with the real world. Enter the Heineken x Bodega "Boring Phone," a unique collaboration that throws a nostalgic twist on the fight against smartphone addiction. HMD, Heineken, and Bodega: An Unlikely Alliance for a Digital Detox Mission HMD, the Finnish company that produces Nokia-branded phones, has teamed up with brewing giant Heineken and trendsetting fashion retailer Bodega for a one-of-a-kind project. Their brainchild? The aptly named "Boring Phone," is a feature phone designed to combat the constant distractions of modern smartphones and encourage users to prioritize face-to-face interactions. Heineken x Bodega Boring Phone This unexpected alliance highlights the growing concern about smartphone dependence. Research commissioned by Heineken and conducted by HMD revealed a startling statistic: 90% of Millennials (Gen Z and Millennials) in the UK and the US admit to "doom scrolling" while socializing, checking their phones an average of seven times per night out. The "Boring Phone" aims to address this issue head-on by offering a stripped-down alternative. Gone are the endless notifications, social media feeds, and addictive apps. This phone focuses on the essentials - making calls, sending texts, and even playing a classic game of Snake – all wrapped in a nostalgic design that evokes simpler times. A No-Frills Phone with a Retro Vibe The Heineken x Bodega Boring Phone isn't just about functionality; it's a fashion statement. The transparent flip design pays homage to the classic mobile phones of the early 2000s, aligning perfectly with Gen Z's fascination with the "Newtro" fashion trend. Holographic stickers further enhance the retro aesthetic, transporting users back to a pre-smartphone era. But don't be fooled by its simplistic exterior. The Boring Phone boasts a respectable 2.8-inch primary display and a convenient 1.77-inch secondary screen. While the camera might not win any photography awards with its basic 0.3MP resolution, it makes up for it with an impressive battery life. Users can enjoy up to a week of standby time and 20 hours of talk time on a single charge – a welcome change from the constant charging woes of modern smartphones. The phone also supports 4G, 3G, and 2G networks, ensuring reliable connectivity for basic needs. Ditch the Purchase, Join the Movement: Limited Availability and Upcoming Features Unlike traditional phone launches, the "Boring Phone" won't be lining store shelves. HMD, Heineken, and Bodega are planning a limited release of just 5,000 units, distributed through select offline events in several European countries and certain regions of the United States. Unfortunately, for those hoping to snag one in India, the news might be a little "boring" – the phone won't be available there. But fear not, digital detox enthusiasts! The Boring Phone makes its debut at Milan Design Week on April 18th, 2024. Following its unveiling, the limited-edition phones will be distributed through competitions and consumer events worldwide. This limited-release strategy aligns with the phone's core message – it's not about mass consumption, but about sparking a conversation and encouraging a shift in smartphone habits. HMD doesn't stop at just hardware. To further support the fight against screen addiction, the company has announced the upcoming launch of a companion app designed to "turn smartphones boring." This app, slated for release in June 2024, aims to help users reclaim control of their phone usage by implementing features that limit app notifications and screen time. The Future of Digital Detox: A Phone as a Catalyst for Change The Heineken x Bodega Boring Phone might seem like a quirky marketing ploy at first glance. But delve deeper, and it becomes clear that this project is more than just a novelty phone. It's a conversation starter, a symbol of a growing movement towards digital detox, and a call to action for Gen Z and beyond. Whether it's the limited-edition hardware or the upcoming software solution, the initiative aims to empower users to take a stand against the constant pull of their smartphones. While the "Boring Phone" itself might not be for everyone, its arrival signifies a shift in the digital landscape – a movement towards more mindful phone use and a renewed appreciation for real-world connections. FAQs: Q: Is the Boring Phone available for purchase? A: No, the Boring Phone is not available for traditional purchase. HMD, Heineken, and Bodega plan to distribute a limited quantity of 5,000 units through specific offline events in select European countries and certain regions of the United States. Unfortunately, the phone won't be available in India. Q: How can I get my hands on a Boring Phone? A: With such a limited release, obtaining a Boring Phone might be challenging. You can keep an eye on HMD, Heineken, and Bodega's social media channels for updates on upcoming events where the phones might be distributed. Q: Is there an alternative to the Boring Phone? A: While the Boring Phone offers a hardware solution, there are several ways to achieve a similar digital detox experience. Consider using built-in phone features or downloading apps that limit screen time and notifications. Additionally, establishing phone-free zones and prioritizing real-world activities can help you disconnect from your smartphone. Q: Will HMD release a similar phone in the future? A: There's no official confirmation from HMD about plans for a similar phone. However, the success of the Boring Phone as a conversation starter could influence their strategy. The upcoming companion app designed to "turn smartphones boring" suggests HMD's commitment to promoting mindful phone usage. Q: Is the Boring Phone just a marketing gimmick? A: While the collaboration with Heineken certainly adds a promotional element, the Boring Phone goes beyond a simple marketing stunt. It serves as a symbol of a growing movement towards digital detox and highlights the potential downsides of excessive smartphone use. Whether you see it as a practical tool or a conversation starter, the Boring Phone undeniably sparks a discussion about our relationship with technology.

Wish List For A Dumb Phone
I have a dumb phone with 20 days of standby time. It's getting old. I might need to buy another one soon.
I only really need that phone for phone stuff. It's small and light. It's my backup in places where my smartphone does not have reception.
A replacement would need physical buttons, and have bar or flip phone form factor, preferably in a blight green or orange colour. It should be a dual-SIM quad-band with GSM for basic phone calls, SMS and MMS, and 4G or 5G connectivity. The web browsing or download speed doesn't really matter.
In terms of featurephone features, I don't need twitter, facebook, whatsapp, or any of those built-in apps. I want the ability to take pictures, play MP3 and OGG files, record audio, play audio, browse the file system, and assign audio files as custom ringtones. E-mail is optional.
The hardware features I want are an SD card slot, a 240p camera or better, a light, FM radio (DAB would be a plus), a replaceable battery, bluetooth for tethering and audio headsets, and USB-C for tethering, charging, and file transfer. It doesn't have to be USB-PD or USB 3.0.
There are some features that would be nice. It would be nice to have a playlist that I can sync with a desktop podcatcher application. It would be nice to be able to move contacts between the SIM card and the SD card in bulk, and to sync contacts with my NextCloud address book with a desktop application. It would be nice if I could mount my phone's file system via USB.
All these features boil down to this: My dumb phone is a bit beat up. I wish I could just replace it with a slightly newer model with USB-C, but otherwise it doesn't need apps or wlan.
There is no phone out there that is just slightly better than my old dumb phone, and can be charged via USB. Once you have all the hardware and features, you might as well slap Android on there, and a more powerful processor, and sell it on features.
It's sad. There are many dumb phones that are almost better than my old one. There is one that is just like my old one, but with 4G instead of 3G, but no USB-C. There is one that looks great, but all reviews say the software is buggy and bluetooth doesn't work reliably. There is one with loads of features that has a couple of days of standby time, not weeks.
There's also one that has all the features but costs more than a smartphone.
All I really want is a Nokia 215 with USB-C, tethering, and a comfortable way to sync my stuff to a PC.
