Oh my fucking god I was about to be disappointed with the end of The Expanse. I'd googled Filip Inaros earlier and the search autofilled "Filip Inaros death" for some fucking reason, so I was already bracing myself for the Ben Solo character to die, and then they make me think Peaches is gonna die too, so halfway through the last episode I'm already composing in my head my next rant about how much I hate the redemption=death trope, lol.

Then the destruction of Marco's ship comes so abruptly, and it doesn't show Filip even doing something to counter his father and dying for it like I expected, so I'm thinking "what the hell was that loose end?" right up until the very last scene and the flashback that sneaks in while Naomi is talking to Holden.

Holy fuck.

The relief I felt.

I was literally the "wait, hold on, I need a minute" meme.

Reading Babylon's Ashes, it's striking me how Marco Inaros is making a fair bid to drive humanity extinct altogether. Killing Earth is bad enough, but he's also doing a really bad job in the Belt; scattering supplies all over the solar system in random containes, throwing away all the water on Ceres and leaving six million people to fend for themselves. I know he doesn't actually think anything through, but the Belt is not going to survive him either if he's left to run rampant.

I remember where he finishes from my first read but not how it got to that point; I really hope more people are going to abandon his grand revolution because throwing out water and air is something only a madman would do (and we know he is and they should see it too)

Filip calling out Marco in front of everyone in Babylon's Ashes is such a good moment. It sucks how many people shit on Filip as a character. Yeah, he did some really, really bad things (or, at the very least, was extremely complicit in them), but he was still a CHILD who was manipulated from birth by a man he (almost literally) looked up to as a god. (Seriously - look closely at the language in Filip's early POV chapters when he talks about Marco. It's almost Old Testament.) He was given life-and-death responsibility that he lacked the maturity to really even comprehend at his age and was saddled with moral injury that lasted the rest of his life. Seriously, think about the dumb shit YOU said, did, and believed at fifteen, sixteen.

There's no way he didn't know the consequences of standing up to Marco like that, especially in front of other people. I don't really give a shit about the "were they redeemed/weren't they redeemed/can they be redeemed" conversation around fictional characters because redemption is a subjective moral judgment. All I'm saying is that took real courage. And walking away took real courage. And it takes real courage to find an open door when someone else has already shut so many of your doors for you before you even knew they were there.

I keep thinking about the moment paralleling Filip looking disillusioned with the crew cheering Marco’s speech in the finale and deciding to leave the Pella with Naomi on the Behemoth looking disillusioned while the belters cheered Drummer’s speech (I think) and deciding to go back to the Roci. It was such a subtle moment with Filip but still a perfect callback to Naomi’s own actions and her disillusionment, and it shows the effect Naomi had on Filip with “walking away is the only choice anyone ever has”. This woman really saved her son on top of everything else she did and I’m so in awe of her.

6. Old age in a maximum security Earth prison (because I assume they don't have the death penalty anymore)

So... I think everyone on Drummer's ship is sleeping with each other. Which is also cool!
