Today’s feature is a Russian true-to-life disaster movie entitled Chernobyl 1986. This is about a newly retired firefighter who is finally reunited with the love of his life after how many years, but the disaster that occurred at Chernobyl, Ukraine, suddenly throws him back to danger. Danila Kozlovsky directed and starred in the movie as Alexei, the firefighter; Oksana Akinshina as Olga, the love of Alexei’s life; and Filipp Avdeev Valera, one of the three divers. If you have watched Pandora, the blockbuster Korean film, you already have a gist of what Chernobyl 1986 is all about but, I must say that the latter is not a tear-jerker one, unlike the former.

What really happened on Chernobyl was on April 26, 1986, the Number Four RBMK reactor at the nuclear power plant became uncontrollable during a test at low-power, which led to an explosion and fire that reduced the reactor building to ruins. Vast amounts of radiation were released into the atmosphere, which affected the people of Chernobyl and nearby countries. Safety measures were paid no attention, so the uranium fuel in the reactor heated up too much and melted through the protective barriers. Mutations did transpire in plants and animals after the explosion. Leaves changed shape, and some of the animals were born with physical abnormalities. Still, despite the increased radiation levels, rare species are now coming back in large numbers to the area, which includes beavers, moose, wolves, and wild boar, plus species of birds.

There have been at least 1800 registered cases of thyroid cancer from children aged 0-14 years old when the accident happened. Health studies of the reported cleanup workers called in, or liquidators, have failed to show any direct association between the radiation exposure and an increase in other forms of cancer or disease. The psychological influences of Chernobyl were and remain widespread and heartfelt and have resulted, for instance, in suicides, drinking problems, and unresponsiveness.

Now, let us revert to the movie review, shall we? If you are going to ask me how will I rate Chernobyl 1986? It would be 7/10. Why? Maybe because I have watched Pandora first, so I already know what happens during such a disaster, and I was just waiting for the movie's ending if it will be the same as the ending of Pandora, but nevertheless, it was still a good one. The acting? Alluring, but not that much. The plot? Well, this one’s promising as movie watchers is still in for a surprise. If you thought you knew what would happen next, then chances are you will be wrong because it is a 2 hour and 16-minute movie, and really, a lot will happen. I know my review is not that of a good one as I rated it a bit low, and my comments may not make you watch the movie, but still, it is a good one as movie watchers may know another thing about history on the other side of the world.
