First Base (Visual Novel)

This one I remember playing last year, but it had very little at the time, so I just decided to wait until there was more content and low and behold here we are. This has the same author as Bleeding Canvas, @try-froggery and I quite like that game, so I hope as the game continues, we will get a fun game like that.

The story starts out with the MC complaining about their college life, finding it boring and deciding to go out to more college events to put themselves out there. They end up waiting out in the shade at a baseball game before nearly getting hit in the face with a baseball. They are saved by Dakota, the star baseball player who starts to flirt with the MC afterwards which leads to a date with him. After accepting (either immediately or with a bit of coercing), the two of them decide to meet up for lunch the next day, realizing that they have a crush on him. They read a copy about The Taming of the Shrew as they judge the characters for being so easily manipulated with all the characters being bad people, not understanding the controversy that it talks about. The MC greets Dakota outside of their house with Dakota driving the two to a cafe nearby called the Brookbread Cafe. The two order their foods (with Dakota ordering the same as the MC). The two chat about things like how Dakota would eat pretty much any food before talking about how he got into baseball. We learn from Dakota that he got into baseball when his dad introduced him to a lot of sports when he was younger, until he discovered his natural talent for baseball, to the point where even his major is related to baseball. After getting the two's food, we learn that the MC is majoring in psychology, and starts to analyze Dakota's body language, seeing him as confident, however, that he either might be nervous/defensive but was trying to hide it before turning and stating that it could just be a comfortable position when seeing Dakota's face turn dark. You can either talk about your hobbies or ask about Dakota's. Asking about Dakota's, we find that he doesn't really have any hobbies outside of baseball, and the MC suggest the two go axe throwing, leading them to exchange numbers. Afterwards, Dakota drives the MC home and while there, Dakota asks for a second date which the MC happily obliges to. Dakota gives the MC flowers before leaving the MC happy about their date.

Like I said, I played this demo the first time that it came out, but it didn't have anything I could really talk about (it was pretty much just the scene where he catches the baseball before asking the MC on a date), so now it's nice that there's more to talk about. For Dakota, there's not a whole bunch on the yandere side, just lines of him wanting to to know more about the MC, but the sentiment is still there, I suppose. I think this will likely be more of a slow burn since we don't get to see that much of it as of current, though I'm not sure what the game will lead to in the future.

The MC is pretty standard as things go, tired of school, instantly falls for Dakota, that kind of thing. I will say that the part where they are actually in psychology is probably the most interesting part, seeing that they're able to analyze (and pretty accurately too) Dakota's behavior just from one single body action. I hope that this kind of thing comes into play later because I feel like that might be really good for if Dakota ends up doing anything to the MC (such as kidnap or drug them) since they might be able to notice it. I think currently that's the trait I'm most interested in, so seeing that be echoed throughout the rest of the game later on would be really cool. Since I did like the MC in the creator's previous game, Bleeding Canvas, I'm hoping that this one will be the same (though probably not a cannibal like in that game).

As for Dakota, we get to learn a bit more about him as well. It seems like his entire life is pretty much just focused on baseball, with very little else that occupies his time, and we get to learn how he got into it in the first place. I think it would be neat if perhaps this is played into his reason for being a yandere for the MC, like he's sick of baseball or he finally is able to get the same type of fulfillment that he has towards baseball that he does towards the MC. Something that could save him from the life he knows kind of thing. I might be looking a bit into it since he does seem to try to act confidentially towards the MC, but as they reveal, perhaps he might not be as confident as he tries to make it out to be. Could be an interesting point to explore in the future.

Overall, the intro for First Base does give a lot of information about Dakota and the MC. He seems pretty sweet with a bit of yandere mixed in, so I hope to see more yandere content in the game later on. The artwork is pretty nice in this one and I like the way the CGs are drawn.

Discord Server announcement!

Hello everyone!! I wanted to make a discord server so I can get to know my small following and possibly create a space where us visual novel players can be free to talk and discuss any recommendations or just want to talk. Of course there are rules to keep the space safe but there will be separate channels for those who wish to talk about games with sensitive topics. I just ask that you all follow rules accordingly and maybe some small suggestions I can do for the server! Overall, I hope the small community can grow and enjoy the space.

So far I only have one moderator, please go easy on us since its only me and them if you find any one breaking the rules don't hesitate to contact me or the Mod! This is my first time using discord so I might not know every control!

Like I said this server is either for my small following or for the visual novel community! You are also free to talk about any series just keep the server safe for everyone! Im happy with one or two people so im not expecting a lot of people to join but im glad to connect with anyone who enjoys what I like!

Chapter 10: Intemperance

Jamie attended the first video session the next morning, choosing to sit in what had been his usual spot until a few days ago. When Claire walked in and spotted him, she smiled and he thought he saw something like relief come across her eyes. He hoped so, at least. The session passed by, highlighting areas of focus for the game. The White Sox catcher was known to call games aggressively, unafraid to have his pitchers come high and inside to back players off the plate. Unafraid of potentially injuring the batters. Claire warned the guys, while looking directly at Jamie, to not let it rattle them, to not chase at the next pitch out of a rush of adrenaline.

“Keep your wits about you, at least the bit any of you lot have!” Claire coached and barbed them simultaneously. Every man in the room chortled. “Alright, go get ‘em!”

“Yes, Coach!” They replied in unison as they all got up and headed to the locker room.

Jamie held back. “Ahem, Coach?”

Claire had turned back to her computer, getting ready for the second session, but stopped and looked at Jamie. “What can I do for you, Red?” She tried not to betray her hope that with this turn of normalcy, whatever had made the past three days so tense had passed.

In the history of baseball uniforms, there have been a lot of interesting eras. But none as interesting as the first half season of 1882 when, for some strange reason that probably had to do with selling more uniforms, instead of symbolizing the team, the uniforms would denote the player's position in the field. So, for example, the first bases, as Piper shows here, would wear scarlet-stripped shirts. The only way to know which team they were part of, would be by their stockings. This was stopped after half a season because honestly, no one could tell what was going on in the field! (and for a good reason, they were called "Clown costumes"). They tried to bring them back in 1888, but thankfully, never again!

It was just in time for the annual family trip to Filly Fun Land when Luster Dawn came to stay with her Gramma and Grampa. Just when she thought it couldn’t get any more hectic than her packed week with her Nana, she was whisked away to the carnival before she had a chance to even put her suitcases down. It was such perfect timing to arrive the day they left for their trip, there was no way they didn’t plan this.

Luster used to go to theme parks as a little filly so this wasn’t entirely new to her. Her dad loved this stuff, now she could see where he got it from. It was almost like reliving a memory.

Yet in many ways it wasn’t the same at all. Her trips with her dad were much more carefree and unstructured. Her Papa always came up with a schedule but it really didn’t matter how much they followed it as long as they had fun. 

But with Gramma and Grampa it was like a performance. They went all-out with the coordinated mascot t-shirts and the expensive VIP passes like they were trying so hard to be a picture-perfect family. All of the pictures they took so far looked almost staged.

Luster’s dad loved amusement parks just as much as the rest of his family but he never went on these trips as far as she could remember. Maybe there was a reason?

“You gotta try out the roller coaster, Luster! It’s a blast!”

Her uncle urged her on excitedly, snapping her out of her thoughts.

First Base’s actions didn’t seem as staged as her grandparents. He seemed like he was genuinely having fun, along for the ride just because he wanted to. He was a lot like her dad in that aspect…he looked just like him too.

“Can we go on a slower ride first? I just had lunch.”

This wasn’t a lie, but looking up at the roller coaster she couldn’t help but notice how much bigger it was than any she had even gone on before. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to go on it at all.

First Base’s grin never dimmed at her turning down his offer.

“That’s fine! I know another ride you’d like! Follow me!”

With that he trotted off, somehow knowing exactly where to go even among all the crowds. Luster did her best to keep up.

She was starting to feel comforted by his genuine, unadulterated enthusiasm before he went on.

“Mom and Dad go on these trips every year, they have since I was a baby. It’s a family tradition! If you live with them we could have loads of fun together! Flash really missed out when he moved away and stopped coming with us. Kind of a killjoy, he was.”

Of course this was just a ploy to get her to live with them. Maybe it was as fun as he said but she didn’t like hearing about her dad this way. He was the opposite of a killjoy! Luster out of anypony knew that!

“Here we are! The boat rides!”

He pointed out the ride and started making a beeline towards it, motioning for his niece to follow him. She trotted after him but slowed down a little, turning her ears back to hear what her grandparents were talking about.

“There’s no way she’s gonna choose Stellar over us! We actually know how to make memories!”

“Been doing it for over 20 years. Beats renovating some old village.”

Honey Bee and Ironwing laughed like they were sharing an inside joke, but Luster knew exactly what they were talking about. They were just trying to make her live with them. As if deciding wasn’t hard enough already. She wanted to have fun with her family, she really did, but her grandparents seemed more interested in convincing her of something than actually spending time with her.

“Luster! Hurry up!”

She sped up, furthering the distance between her and her grandparents and doing her best to leave that drama behind her. She would at least try to have fun. As much as she could in these circumstances, anyway.

Concept-wise it wasn't my thing. Sporty LIs are always quite low on my interest list. So Dakota Ciy didn't really do anything for me personality-wise. Baseball and the MC, that's pretty much what he has going on for him so far.

Design wise I actually quite like how he's drawn and it being on the darker side of the color spectrum makes him easy on the eyes. I don't know how else to say this but the art style does fit in what I would sort of consider a western yandere born and raised in tumblr type. That certain rough edge and thick line art and boxy shapes everywhere.

What got me to talk about it (and create this post in the first place) is if you choose the gaming option during the date, the player mentions "VaporPunk 6044" which was basically a reference to Cyberpunk 2077 and as someone who is obsessed with that series in my free time for the past year I suddenly felt a kinship with the MC--and by extension, the creator.

There really is only one path so far, whether you accept the date or not all options lead to the same conclusion. An illusion of free will. Outside of the red text like the photo above shows there isn't anything "yandere" about him. Asocial maybe but nothing psychotic yet. It is still being updated and seems to be a slower burn so we'll see.

P.S I have not used this account in years, I forgot my own system lol. Gotta reacquaint myself.
