What are EDCs And How it’s Dangerous?
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous chemicals that interfere with hormone action, thereby increasing the risk of adverse health outcomes, including cancer, reproductive impairment, cognitive deficits, and obesity.
The endocrine system is composed of glands that secrete chemical messengers (hormones) that interact with specific targets (receptors). These interactions lead to the regulation of a vast set of functions, including growth, development, reproduction, energy balance, metabolism, and body weight regulation
EDCs come from many different sources, people are exposed in several ways, including the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. EDCs can also enter the body through the skin. Common examples of EDCs are Industrial chemicals and pesticides, some processed foods, Soy-based products, and even household dust.
The group of molecules identified as endocrine disruptors is highly heterogeneous and includes synthetic chemicals used as industrial solvents/lubricants and their byproducts [polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), dioxins], plastics [bisphenol A (BPA)], plasticizers (phthalates), pesticides [methoxychlor, chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)], fungicides (vinclozolin), and pharmaceutical agents [diethylstilbestrol (DES)].
Do EDCs really threaten our endocrine system?
Various researches have shown that EDCs could be very harmful to the system. For instance, EDC can interact with or activate hormone receptors, antagonize it and further alter the hormone receptor expression. It has also been shown EDC has the ability to alter signal transduction (including changes in protein or RNA expression, post-translational modifications, and/or ion flux) in hormone-responsive cells and induce epigenetic modifications in hormone-producing or hormone-responsive cells. It can also alter hormone transport across cell membranes and change the hormone distribution or circulating hormone levels. Moreover, it can also alter hormone metabolism or clearance and alter the fate of hormone-producing or hormone-responsive cells.
Thus, after coming across threats pose by EDCs, it would be a great move to go for 100% pure, non-toxic, and EDC-free products for healthy well-being.
EDC has the ability to affect different persons differently. For example, the effect that it incurs on females is quite different from her male counterpart.
EDCs on Female Reproduction
Development and function of the female reproductive tract depend on coordinated biological processes that, if altered by endogenous or exogenous factors during critical periods of development or during different life stages, could have significant adverse effects on women’s health and reproductive function and outcomes.
A key question arises as to whether EDCs contribute to the development of female reproductive disorders, particularly those occurring during a critical window of susceptibility: in utero, neonatally, in childhood, during puberty, and during adulthood. There are increasing data from wildlife studies and laboratory studies with rodents, ungulates, and nonhuman primates that support the role of EDCs in the pathogenesis of several female reproductive disorders, including polycystic ovarian syndrome, aneuploidy, POF, reproductive tract anomalies, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and ectopic gestation.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by persistent anovulation, oligo- or amenorrhea, and hyperandrogenism in the absence of thyroid, pituitary, and/or adrenal disease. It is plausible that in utero exposure of human female fetuses to androgen-like EDCs could result in PCOS in adulthood, along with associated metabolic disorders. Very recent evidence for androgenic properties of personal-care products such as triclocarban adds to the possibility of environmental androgens, although a connection to PCOS has not yet been drawn.
Some studies have indicated that organochlorine pesticides (synthetic EDCs) adversely affect the ovary by reducing ovarian weight, follicle growth, and oocyte viability and/or increasing atresia. Several studies show that pesticide exposure is associated with reduced fertility in women and animal models. Organochlorine pesticide exposure was associated with an increased time to pregnancy in women.
Epidemiological data show that the selected EDCs are associated with adverse fertility outcomes such as reduced gestational age, weight, pregnancy gain, increased risk for miscarriage, and time to pregnancy in women. Experimental data show that EDC exposure during adulthood caused a range of effects such as estrous cyclicity abnormalities, decreased pregnancy rates, decreased pup survival, and the increased onset of reproductive senescence. Some studies report that EDCs exert toxicity through estrogen receptors, aryl hydrocarbon receptors, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor activation mechanisms, but they have not examined other potential pathways.
Endocrine Disruptors and Child Health
The exposure may occur early in life as every pregnant woman has EDs in her body and may transfer them through the placenta to the fetus and through milk to the infant. Inhalation, oral and dermal exposures are the main routes of adult exposure to environmental chemicals. EDs may act via classical nuclear receptors, nonnuclear steroid hormone receptors, nonsteroid receptors, orphan receptors, enzymatic pathways involved in steroid biosynthesis and/or metabolism, and other mechanisms involved in endocrine and reproductive system function.
The environmental toxins have been found in our air, water, and soil as well as in a range of household products, including children’s toys. Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in certain children’s toys, plastic bottles, and food containers, food can linings, and cash register receipts. The concern has grown since even a low level of exposure to EDCs can affect body functions, particularly in the most vulnerable populations including infants and children. Some EDCs may be stored in fat cells for years after exposure and may be passed on to children during pregnancy or when breastfeeding.
How to avoid EDCs
Although scientists are still working to understand how endocrine disruptors are accumulated and excreted, they do know that significant levels of these compounds can be detected in a vast majority of people today. Although tests that measure the presence of the metabolites made by endocrine disruptors can give you an idea of your overall exposure to these insidious chemicals, detoxification treatment protocols aren’t yet well-defined.
What experts do know, however, is that certain endocrine disruptors tend to accumulate in body fat. In such cases, simply losing a few extra pounds may be enough to decrease chemical concentration and restore optimal fertility. In most cases, the best way to protect your fertility from the harmful effects of endocrine disruptors is by taking steps to minimize your exposure to EDCs in the first place.
The first step in avoiding these ubiquitous chemicals is knowing that they can be found in a wide range of everyday products, including commonly used pesticides and herbicides, plastic bottles, vinyl shower curtains, metal food cans, nonstick cookware, detergents, and coatings used on fabrics, furniture, and carpeting. They’re also found in many personal care products, including shampoo and cosmetics.
Wash your hands often Frequent - handwashing helps wash a substantial amount of chemical residue down the drain. Just be sure to avoid antibacterial and fragranced soaps, which are known endocrine disruptors.
Keep your house clean - Flame retardants and other industrial coatings can escape from fabrics, furniture, carpeting, and electronics and accumulate in household dust. You can minimize these free-floating, breathable chemicals by routinely dusting with a damp cloth and cleaning your carpets with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter.
Use less plastic - Switch to Purely family EDC-free household products. Because research shows that even very low-dose exposure to BPA and other plasticizers can be detrimental to fertility and reproduction, it’s a good idea to eliminate as many products made with plastic or vinyl from your life as you can. Swap plastic cups for glasses, use stainless steel or glass storage containers instead of plastic ones, opt for reusable fabric baggies, and keep food fresh with beeswax-coated cloth instead of plastic cling wrap.

1. Plastic food containers, plastic water bottles, plastic wrap
This was a top thing that my friend said she changed, plastic containers! Many plastic containers are made from chemicals such as phthalates, which can interfere with the body’s endocrine system to produce adverse developmental, reproductive and neurological effects in humans and since the plastic breaks down over time it can cause the release of these dangerous chemicals into your food. Good reason for me to switch to glass. Which I did over the summer after a friend told me that information on plastic containers. I have been using THESE Beeswax Food Wraps on my glass containers and bowls. I changed in the summer to all glass (THESE glass containers. I use THESE for snacks for kids. And THESE bags replaced all our plastic bags). And I like to use THESE reusable cups and sippy cups rather than plastic.
2. Nonstick pans
Another friend who had breast cancer (in remission thankfully) told me the first thing she changed was all the pans she cooks with! Non-stick pans are the most popular cookware and also the most controversial. According to the Environmental Working Group, nonstick coatings can “reach 700 degrees Fahrenheit in as little as 3-5 minutes, releasing 15 toxic gases and chemicals, including two carcinogens.” There are non-stick pans that ARE non-toxic you just have to do your research. I found that a Cast Iron pan to be the most “green or non-toxic” we have THIS Cast Iron Pan, just read into how to properly take care of them! I am looking at getting THIS set of green pans, still doing my research.
3. Air fresheners
Like cleaning products, air fresheners help keep our homes nice, but a study by the University of California at Berkeley found that when used excessively or in unventilated area they release toxic levels of pollutants. If you use them make sure the room is well ventilated. We actually make our own! You can get the recipe HERE- DIY Room Spray.
4. Perfumes and Candles
A quick google search and I found this- Environmental Protection Agency found that potentially hazardous chemicals can commonly be found in fragrances. Causing some major side affects. Look for natural alternatives. And most candles are made of paraffin wax, which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned. In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes. YIKES!! So look for candles made from vegetable (soy) wax. And a lead-free wick. And no fragrance. I am big into oils now and don’t use candles, except for battery operated. I am a big diffuser lover!! You can read more about that HERE.
5. Fabric softeners
Softeners work by coating your clothes with a thin layer of potentially toxic chemicals, such as quantenary ammonium salts. These can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems and headaches. This information is so new to me! I have been using THESE Wool Dryer Balls for about a month and have been completely happy with the results. They come with essential oils to make your clothes smell nice! A reader told me that you can use white vinegar in the Laundry room as a natural fabric softener. … A half-cup of white vinegar when added to the final rinse, on the other hand, will soften fabrics and leave no residue at all.
6. Cleaning products
This one seems obvious. I only use vinegar and water at our home or make sure that is is non-toxic before I buy it. I also use Thieves concentrate. I LOVE that new addition to my home. Anti- bacterial too! You can see more of the cleaning products I use HERE.
7. Flame Retardants
I met a woman at a play place and we started talking. She told me what she did and what she was interested in. She had recently written an article about toxic things in our home. I asked her what the the number one thing was and she said flame retardants in your mattress or mattress pad (remember when they made flame-retardant pajamas, my grandma insisted Ella wear them!) Flame retardants use polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEsfor short. Two forms of PBDEs were phased out of use in manufacturing in the United States in 2004 because of related health threats, but the products containing them linger on. Studies have linked PBDEs to learning and memory problems and other health issues. Good idea to check your mattress label! And check before you purchase a mattress cover. I found a non-toxic mattress protector when Finn switched to his big-boy bed.
8. Shower Curtain
Phthalates are sometimes used to soften the plastic that goes in shower curtains. Phthalates has been associated with causing harmful effects in children. Opt for a shower curtain that is phthalate-free. I use THIS cloth fabric liner that is non-toxic and I wash it every two weeks.
9. Bug sprays
Bug killers should be avoided inside (and ideally outside) of your house, as researchers have linked the insecticides to neurological damage in children. Scary!! For outdoors I try to just use citronella in a diffuser, non-toxic and free of D.E.E.T or petroleum. I also make my own bug-off spray!
10. Antiperspirants
One of the ingredients found in a lot of deodorants is aluminum. Food and Drug Administration does require a warning label on all antiperspirants. Questions have been raised about aluminum in deodorants if they contribute to breast cancer (studies are in-conclusive). But that is enough of a reason for me to look for all natural deodorant. THIS deodorant it works well for my Crossfit workouts and it smells good! Kevin uses it too!!
11. Sunscreens with Oxybenzone
I would avoid these ingredients after searching online- oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxateI. Similar toxins in fragrances. I have used THIS sunscreen for my kids for awhile.
12. Wi-Fi Routers
Wireless routers give off electromagnetic radiation in the low frequency. You probably can’t get away from the effects of Wi-Fi (I know I can’t!) You could disconnect your wi-fi router it at night. Which is a little out of the way for me. I was talking to a woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer (thankfully went into remission). She said that she like to use a Himalayan Salt Lamp when she has her Wi-Fi on to “clean the air”. It might be a stretch, but I found this – “Combined with a light source inside the lamps, the chunks of salt produce negative ions, which yield positive effects on indoor air. Placing a Himalayan salt lamp in every room of the home can reap several health and environmental benefits. Among other things, they can: Balance Electromagnetic Radiation.” Who knows if they work, but I like the way the way they look. So I ordered one for the girls room. If anything it is a nice soft lamp for them at night. My friend did a lot of research and said that THIS Himalayan Salt Lamp. Again DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. This is just what I do. You can also find a router blanket, type cover.

Washing should be done wisely so that no harm is caused to totally. Selecting right curtain fabric is one of many most ways to learn before it is crucial curtains to match your windows. Generally, we've got two sets of curtain fabrics namely the heavy fabric and the light fabric. Heavy materials, though durable, are commonly opaque so blocking out any light from beyond your room. (More) Sustainable Laundry Care for your Everyday (Vintage) Wardrobe
Tumblr media
-as you build and refresh your sustainably sourced wardrobe focus on natural fibers-
Every time we wash and dry our clothes millions of micro fibers are shed and released into either the water or the air. Best for those fibers to be cotton, linen, wool, silk, hemp, etc. rather than plastic (synthetics like polyester, nylon, anything with stretch) which doesn’t biodegrade and will eventually make its way into our food or water supply chain.
read more about microfiber pollution here!
-wash less often-
kind of obvious, but always good to remember that washing garments less saves water, electricity, and prolongs the life of the garment itself. In our home only athletic gear, undergarments and babywear get washed after one use. Jeans, blouses, sweaters, office wear, everything else can usually be re-worn at least a few times.
hot tip: when it comes to extending your tops and dresses for 2-3 wears before washing, finding a natural deodorant that works for you (I love the Weleda spray) and wearing natural fibers will help reduce stinky sweat production and prevent creepy antiperspirant related staining. I’m also a big proponent of sourcing everyday pieces that have a loose fit through the armscye (the place where your shoulder turns into your arm) for ease of movement but also breathability.
a little guide to healthiest deodorant products via EWG
hotter tip: if you frequently like to wear fitted retro styles, I know a lot of women like underarm protectors, which can be pinned or tacked in and can help avoid anxiety-inducing wet washing of vintage fabrics or extra trips to the dry cleaner.
-dry less often-
when you do a load of wash, consider what items can be hung to dry. I use a folding rack and for garments that aren’t heavy/don’t stretch, hangers on the shower curtain rod. Some items *do* benefit from a little fluff in the dryer to soften and de-wrinkle them a bit. I suggest letting them mostly air dry then popping them in the dryer for a quick 15 minute finish. Once again, saves electricity, reduces fiber shedding and prolongs the life of garments. Outdoor lines are awesome too, especially on breezy sunny days. if you have the outdoor space to set one up you should def go for it. Ours is retractable so it doesn’t get in the way of other yard activities when not in use.
-wash with cold water-
Most of our clothes do not need hot water to clean them. Use a cold cycle to save hot water and prolong clothing life. Generally in garment care, exposure to high direct heat should be avoided where possible. less heat = longer life. We generally use warm/hot water only for kitchen/bath linens, gym wear, and soiled baby clothes.
-use an EWG highly rated laundry detergent-
probably the easiest step we can take towards a more sustainable laundry practice is finding a healthier detergent. There are so many eco-friendly, “natural” detergent options out there. I love the Environmental Working Group’s list of rated products. It will help you find one that works for you and that you can easily pick up at one of your local retailers. Generally avoid fragrance (fragrance = chemicals) or any kind of deodorizing, anti bacterial, anti wrinkle, products. These all have more chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic (aka cancer causing) or endocrine disrupting (aka fuck with your hormones + reproductive health).
access the EWG Laundry List here!
Hot tip: if you want to get real real with it you can make your own detergent using a handful of natural ingredients. There are tons of tutorials online. This one has only 3 ingredients! If you are already using homemade detergent and love it, let me know what you’re doing! It’s on my “To Try” list!!
Tumblr media
-avoid dryer sheets and fabric softener-
I’ve used pretty neutral language so far, but dryer sheets are basically cancer causing/endocrine-disrupting chemical delivery systems. LOL. But seriously, they are loaded with fabric softener which is loaded with chemicals you do not need or want on or near your body, in your home, or released into the environment. not only that, they aren’t great for your clothes!
but you don’t have to take my word for it:
“Not only does fabric softener not do what it promises, but it also prevents the fabrics from functioning the way they’re designed. With regular use of fabric softeners or dryer sheets, activewear becomes less breathable, children’s clothing becomes less flame-retardant, and towels become less absorbent.”
full (and very compelling) article from apartment therapy here!
Wool dryer balls are a good natural alternative. They can last up to a year, help fluff your clothes, speed the drying process, and have naturally occurring lanolin which is nature’s conditioner. I haven’t done it myself, but I think you can even use essential oil with them to add a little natural scent to the laundry cycle, now that you’ve cut out all those nasty artificial fragrances.
dryer balls can be found at more holistic grocers (even Wholefoods) or local co-ops and farmers markets. there’s also always good ole amazon in a pinch.
-avoid dry cleaning when possible (it is often possible)-
Dry cleaning is a process that involves a lot of chemicals that are harmful to you and the environment. Conventional dry cleaning also requires exposing garments to high heat, which can stress fabrics over time, and be particularly harmful to older garments.
As you have probably noted, many garments made in the past 50 years include care instructions, and many of them simply say “dry clean only”. There is an industry regulation reason for this:
“Under the law, if either washing or dry cleaning can be used on the product, the label needs to state only one of these instructions—and which one ultimately appears on the label is up to the manufacturer. An expert in textiles who asked that her name not be used for this article revealed to us that “clothing manufacturers tend to opt for as few instructions on the label as is legally required.” Given a a choice between “wash” and “dry clean,” manufacturers tend to choose the latter because it is more likely to lead to the consumer leaving the care of the item to professionals, and professional cleaning can reduce the manufacturer’s risk of of return by the consumer who mishandles the item with home-cleaning.”
More on what dry cleaning means here!
I successfully machine or hand wash many many many pieces for myself and for the shop with dry clean only tags- this includes rayons, linens, silks, woolens and cashmeres oh my. You can too!
hot tip: if you have a newer washer dryer (like in the past 20 years), make sure you’re making the best use of the settings to be as economical as possible, and not just going with the auto settings. For me this means making sure its set to a cold cycle, and that the soil setting is appropriate (sometimes its lighter than “normal”). Delicate and handwash cycles are a great option for those “dry clean only” labeled pieces you’re nervous about wet washing.
-practice general garment maintenance-
doing things like treating stains, mending small seam pops or holes before they grow, and proper storage in conjunction with conscientious laundering practice will help prolong the life of your garments, and delay the need to purchase replacements. Being a better mender is a goal of mine (my pile of personal mending is ever-growing). As a preventative measure against pests and storage “musk”, I add lavender sachets to my drawers and closets. Dr. Bronners soap bars (in the paper wrappers) are great for this too!  I also use a fast evaporating alcohol-based homemade lavender spritz for the same purpose (not just for refreshing clothes, but also bedding, drapes, etc). And remember: friends don’t let friends use Febreze.
Tumblr media
The great news about all these changes is that they really don’t make more work for you, and they are good for your clothes, YOU, and the environment! Nothing like a win-win-win.

In today's market, the possibilities for shower curtains are endless and limited to your imagination.
Window coverings range from breathable, translucent Italian gauze to heavy fabrics that are ideal for preventing light and heat. The right opacity depends on your needs - whether you want to turn on a bright light, give some privacy, or make your sleep stop from street lamps that are brighter than the sun. We classify the screen as bright, medium opaque, and blackouts, which usually prevents heat.
Conclusion
The point is at the top of the curtain, where the fabric meets the curtain rod, and its style depends on how the curtain is made and determines how it is hung. Typically, curtains are hung directly above the curtain rod using hooks, loops, or eyelets, or hung slightly below using cords, curtain hooks, or it's a curtain pin. Many pocket curtains also have a tab on the back, which can be attached directly to the rod or threaded onto a curtain hook. The hook will take a little time to install, but placing the curtain on the hook more directly on the rod can help it open and close faster.
Coatings vary in cleanliness, damage from ultraviolet rays, oil and dust retention, sound insulation, fire resistance and service life. Curtains can be operated manually, with cords, through push buttons or remotely controlled computers. The distance from the window is controlled by the curtain rod. The measurement of the necessary curtain size for each window varies depending on the type of curtain needed the size of the window, and the type and weight of the curtain.

Key Drivers of Calcium Carbide Market
The growth in the demand for Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) in various applications across the globe is expected to boost the calcium carbide market during the forecast period. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is one of the widely used polymers in the world. PVC is used extensively across a broad range of industrial, technical, and everyday applications, including building & construction, transport, packaging, electrical/electronics, and healthcare, due to its versatile nature.
PVC has been used extensively in a wide range of construction products for over half a century, owing to its strong, lightweight, durable, flame retardant, and excellent electrical insulation properties. Typical examples of PVC construction products include window and door profiles, conservatories and atria, pipes and fittings, power, data and telecom, wiring and cables, cable and services ducting, internal and external cladding, roofing and ceiling systems and membranes, rainwater, soil and waste systems, flooring, and wall coverings.
The increase in the demand for PVC is directly linked to GDP growth, as PVC is widely used in all major end-use sectors that affect the GDP of a country. Therefore, the rise in economies around the world is anticipated to boost the demand for PVC during the forecast period. In turn, this is expected to propel the global calcium carbide market.

PVC is manufactured through the cracking of chemicals such as calcium carbide, ethylene, and dichloroethane. Hence, the demand for calcium carbide is estimated to rise due to the increase in the demand for PVC. PVC is widely used in the manufacture of pipes, siding, hoses, medical devices, automotive parts, housewares, shower curtains, raincoats, toys, school supplies, food packaging, and shoes. Thus, it is employed in major industries such as automotive, electrical & electronics, and building & construction.
Harmful Health Effects to Hamper Calcium Carbide Market
Calcium carbide is on the Right to Know Hazardous Substance List cited by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Apart from its industrial use, it is frequently used in domestic settings for unclogging of drains as well as ripening of fruits. Calcium carbide is an alkali. It releases acetylene gas on contact with moisture. Acetylene gas is a chemical analogue of ethylene gas, which is a natural fruit ripening agent. Commercialized ripening is an essential part of the fruit business, as ripe fruits are not suitable to transport and distribute. Acetylene gas is a depressant to central nervous system and irritant to respiratory system. Its chemical reaction generates heat, which can cause burn and damage to mucosa, skin, and eyes on contact. Therefore, several governing bodies have banned the usage of calcium carbide to ripen fruit. This is anticipated to adversely affect the calcium carbide market.

12 OF THE MOST TOXIC THINGS IN YOUR HOME!
1. Plastic food containers, plastic water bottles, plastic wrap Many plastic containers are made from chemicals such as phthalates, which can interfere with the body’s endocrine system to produce adverse developmental, reproductive and neurological effects in humans and since the plastic breaks down over time it can cause the release of these dangerous chemicals into your food. 2. Nonstick pans Non-stick pans are the most popular cookware and also the most controversial. 3. Air fresheners Like cleaning products, air fresheners help keep our homes nice, but a study by the University of California at Berkeley found that when used excessively or in unventilated area they release toxic levels of pollutants. If you use them make sure the room is well ventilated. 4. Perfumes and Candles The Environmental Protection Agency found that potentially hazardous chemicals can commonly be found in fragrances. Causing some major side effects. Look for natural alternatives. And most candles are made of paraffin wax, which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned. In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes. 5. Fabric softeners Softeners work by coating your clothes with a thin layer of potentially toxic chemicals, such as quaternary ammonium salts. These can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems and headaches. 6. Cleaning products This one seems obvious. 7. Flame Retardants Flame retardants use polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs for short. 8. Shower Curtain Phthalates are sometimes used to soften the plastic that goes in shower curtains. Phthalates has been associated with causing harmful effects in children. Opt for a shower curtain that is phthalate-free. 9. Bug sprays Bug killers should be avoided inside (and ideally outside) of your house, as researchers have linked the insecticides to neurological damage in children. 10. Antiperspirants One of the ingredients found in a lot of deodorants is aluminum. Food and Drug Administration does require a warning label on all antiperspirants. Questions have been raised about aluminum in deodorants if they contribute to breast cancer (studies are in-conclusive). 11. Sunscreens with Oxybenzone We should avoid these ingredients after searching - oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Similar toxins in fragrances. 12. Wi-Fi Routers Wireless routers give off electromagnetic radiation in the low frequency. You probably can’t get away from the effects of Wi-Fi. You could disconnect your wi-fi router at night. -------- Visit our website: https://zerowasteinitiative.com/ Source: Internet 🌳 Zero Waste Initiative - Less Trash More Life ! 🌏 Let's Save The World While There's Still Time !

Innovative Safety Features in Hospital Shower Curtains
Tumblr media
As part of the ongoing effort to improve safety and hygiene in medical environments, a new class of shower curtains for use in medical wards has come to the fore. Made from multiple advanced features, these Shower-shield flame retardant curtains are designed with patient safety and facility compliance in mind as well as strict regulations. Flame retardancy is a major feature of these modern shower curtains because this prevents fire propagation in healthcare facilities. The fire-retardant healthcare textiles have been engineered to pass significant fire safety tests, including the US NFPA 701 Small Scale Fire Retardant Test. This compliance is critical in environments where fire risk can be catastrophic. In addition to fire resistance, these curtains are fluorine-free water repellent treated for cleanliness and ease of maintenance. This treatment makes clean-up easier, further repels, and prevents pathogenic water-borne organisms from adhering to the surface. Furthermore, these curtains have an antimicrobial finish. Having this feature is indispensable in medical facilities where infection control is of the essence. Antimicrobial properties limit bacterial and other harmful microorganism growth on the curtain's surface, curtailing a healthy environment for the patients and staff. These attributes combine and exceed modern healthcare's safety, giving you peace of mind and additional protection where it's needed.

Establishing Room Separation With Cubicle Curtains
Workplace curtains happen to be extensively used for the purpose of creating room separation, particularly in hospitals. They are also utilized by corporations and corporate offices for special occasions or for certain specific requirements. Cubicle window treatments is a general name, with the varieties of black-out curtains, throw-aways curtains, bio-active curtains, shower curtains, earth-friendly curtains, and cubicle window curtain track systems. Normally, a cubicle curtain could be thought as a material dividing the room into different enclosures. http://mccurtaincounty.net/curtains/curtain-rod-finials/the-gorgeous-finials-for-curtain-rods/ Inside the hospital, the tracking devices are greatly used to give privacy towards the patients within a large area and to help in easier medical therapy. Cubicle Window curtain Fabrics Almost all the manufacturers apply fabrics that possess a long-life flame retardant capacity. The curtain cloth will be suspended from a drape track, curtain carriers, or other types of supporting structures. However , curtain following is the most common support for most of the cubicle curtains. In the matter of hospital window treatments, the workplace curtain textile would contain different types of woven fabrics that might be stitched together. The top component of the workplace curtain would be prepared out of a mesh fabric to allow for light and air flow in the cubicle. The low portion will be of opaque cloth to furnish comprehensive privacy. Most the manufacturers apply FR nylon mesh fabric for the most notable portion which has a snag-free, weaved header, along with a grommet meant for providing support and ensuring durability. The base portion could generally come to be stitched with polyester wool that possesses 100% fire resistant capacity for complete flame amount of resistance. The materials are categorised as antiseptic materials, anti-bacterial materials, botanical materials, bio-active materials, and eco-friendly resources. Such components are normally used for cubicle curtains supplied to hospitals. Shower curtains will be made of typical polyester yarn fabrics, because the other types of materials would be too costly to cause using them in home. The curtain materials are supplied by nearly all the manufacturers in different colorings and patterns so that they match the interior with the rooms where cubicle window treatments are used. The specifications from the fabrics and their compliance to fire retardant standards of the state government should be analyzed and confirmed before inserting orders for cubicle drapes. Curtain Track and Curtain Carriers The cubicle curtain tracking is completed with a drape track that were specially designed and bent to satisfy the specs and requirements at the place of installation. The curtain following systems are typically powder coated plus the most common powder coating color is white, so that the drape carriers blend with the upper limit. Moreover, the curtain track is generally presented a fair sum of wetness by the using a Teflon coating, in order that the cubicle drape fabric could possibly be easily managed, if starting or final of the enclosure is required. The curtain traffic monitoring system is likewise provided with gliding carriers in order that the above do the job is made less difficult. Tracking could be classified because ceiling mounted cubicle keep tabs on and hanging cubicle track. The upper limit mounted office tracking systems would be made from aluminum and may be used successfully for in the beds of patients, distancing shower areas in the restrooms, or in just about any other places in which personal privacy is needed. In places where the ceilings are extremely high or perhaps other items in the way prevent the rising of window curtain track inside the ceiling directly, suspended workplace tracking system is utilized. Inside the suspended tracking systems, the curtain keep tabs on is suspended by an aluminum tube that is fixed to the roof and the keep tabs on with plastic flanges. The carriers normally contain a nylon axle, two free-rolling synthetic wheels, a nylon turning stern that is designed to be tangle-free and metal hooks that are chrome-plated. Nylon materials are being used as drape carriers simply because they would not very easily break or rust and are really durable. Yet , the curtain carrier float could also be made with a nylon swivel, one-piece nylon kitchen, and metal hook of chrome plating. Another type of curtain carrier may be the breakaway jar, comprised of synthetic wheels, fishing hook, and body. The monitoring for draperies would range from one site to another to fit the type of building of the place.

Cementitious Fireproofing
With the Amazon fire disaster fresh in the minds of everyone, and fires spreading in California and Australia that threatened homes and livelihoods, fire safety should be at the top of everyone’s list. So, what can you do to protect your family, your home and your assets and reduce risk? We’ve included some changes you can make to protect your home from fire. First of all consider cementitious fireproofing. Fireproofing is an important measure to prevent and control major fires. There are many causes of fire outburst but the main cause is the negligible attitude of people. They don’t take it seriously. it will leave the stove on. They won’t care about turning the heater off when sleeping and the Curtain or carpet in your room can catch fire from that.
All these things show that we are not taking fireproofing seriously. Around 50000 fires get reported in households in North America. It is your job to maintain the safety of your children and family members. Check out the following ways to fireproof your home.
Use Fire Retardants
Let’s start with the materials; some are more at risk of fire than others. Using other fire retrieval methods and fire protection are the first good steps to protect yourself from potential danger. Make changes when renovating or renovating your home. When it comes to building materials, concrete panels, stove or brick on the exterior walls, metal paneling of windows and concrete or metal roofing are all great. Fire recovery paint is also a good idea. Concrete, concrete, tiles, stone or brick is better than wood. Inside your home, choose fire-resistant curtains and upholstery fabrics, making sure you understand the various quality standards and certifications used for fire protection fabrics. Extra flameproofing and cementitious fireproofing Toronto can also be delivered to your existing home fabrics and high quality Arr furniture.
Install a Smoke Alarm
Learn the Easy Ways to Fireproof your Home and Surroundings- Basic and simple Steps
Smoke alarms provide early warning if a fire may occur inside your home. Traditional alarms sound when they detect smoke or fire, while smart detectors send alerts to your phone. According to the National Fire Services, there should be a smoke detector in every room in your home without a shower, high security. You also need one in the hallway between the living room and bedrooms, and one for each room. There are 4 types of smoke alarms that are suitable for different places in the house. Smoke alarms should be kept away from air-conditioned areas, and batteries are replaced every 6 months. Usually, it is strongly advised that you test your smoking alarms at least once a year to make sure they are effective. You are four times more likely to die from a house fire without a smoke-activated alarm!
Moreover cementitious fireproofing gta is the best way to make sure that you don’t have to worry about any fires occuring in your vicinity.
Find a Fire Extinguisher
Having a fire extinguisher can be very important if installed in between a small, well-equipped kitchen and will help control burning and fire in a house. There are different types of fire extinguishers, divided into types of fire designed for charging. Make sure you know what the difference is and how to apply it in an emergency. A standard home fire extinguisher should have an ABC rating:
A Category – materials including materials such as wood, paper, fabric, rubber, household waste, plastic
B Category – flammable liquids, solvents, oil, gasoline, paint and pieces
C Category – gases including methane, propane, hydrogen, acetylene and natural gas
D Category – combustible metals including magnesium and aluminum swarf
E Category – Electric fires
F Category – chip pan fires, as an alternative to a fire blanket
Theses fire extinguishers are really important, if you have children in your home. Children can be pretty dumb and can play with fires. The most common cause of fires around the world is children and their stupid playing obsession with fire. You can’t just leave your house unattended with them. You got to make sure that you have the right equipment to handle a mini fire at home and use monkote fireproofing to help you with that. First you should stop a fire early, before it turns to disasters and burns down your house. Beware of all that.
Plant Fire Doors in Important Areas
A fire at home can spread quickly, covering all rooms in under 10 minutes. But smoke and fire damage can be greatly reduced by having fire doors in your home locked at night when fires are very common. The fire department will catch smoke, heat and flames – usually up to 30 or 60 minutes – to protect the way out and give you those important seconds to safely leave the building.Non-domestic facilities are subject to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, of which fire departments are a priority. In fact, business owners who have been found guilty of blocking a fire department, preventing a good closure or failing to be original in the first place, could face unlimited fines and up to 2 years in prison. The government also takes this very seriously. You should also use every necessary measure to control and prevent fires.
Cementitious fireproofing Vaughan is a well known insulation for fires. Home building, on the other hand, usually requires the installation of fire doors only if they have a 3+ store or an adjoining garage with a connecting door.
Which means you need to have a proper fireproofing system otherwise you will be at risk of a fire. Therefore, do the necessary and install a fireproofing mechanism at your home. Even if you live in a rented apartment then ask your landlord to do that for you. If he is making excuses then pay for the fireproofing yourself. It doesn’t cost that much. cementitious fireproofing Mississauga is very cheap as compared to other means of fireproofing. So don’t waste anymore time and get your insulation and fireproofing done by experts and professionals. This is not a joke and you have to take It seriously.
Cementitious Fireproofing is one of the preferred Fireproofing methods adopted by several contractors to protect the building of structural steel from failure in case of a sudden fire. The materials that are being used in this method of Cementitious Fireproofing Toronto must adhere to the strict building codes. For several industries, Cementitious Fireproofing GTA is a prerequisite. Cementitious Monokote Fireproofing has been in used from decades now. This specific type of material is resistant to even every high temperature. Even today Cementitious Fireproofing is effective and inexpensive form of fireproofing insulation. Cementitious Fireproofing Toronto is a versatile type of fireproofing and it can be applied in different types of building structures like, manufacturing facilities, sports facilities, schools, hospitals, and even high-rise construction.
NorthStar Fireproofing and Insulation has become a requirement for residential and commercial properties. Whether the building is made from the steel construction Monokote Fireproofing should not be ignored. Fire is the biggest danger to homes and even to businesses. Even a small flame could be catastrophic if you do not have any kind of Cementitious Fireproofing GTA around your commercial insulation in your building. Do not put your family or even your employees in danger by ignoring the Cementitious Fireproofing GTA.

Fashion Waste Poised to Become Environmental Crisis Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Over the past decades society has moved from using biodegradable, recyclable natural products to highly resilient and nonbiodegradable plastics made with toxic chemicals. Plastics invade nearly every area of your life — even parts you don’t see, such as your clothing and microbeads in your makeup and facial products. Each of these contribute to a rapidly growing problem in the environment, especially our oceans, where plastic micropollution is quickly overtaking the fish population. Discarded plastics are polluting your food supply and ultimately finding their way into your body where they accumulate over time. The risk grows with every discarded bottle, bag, shower curtain and load of wash. Microfibers that enter the water supply from your washing machine are not the only ways fabric is fast becoming an environmental crisis. The fashion industry has nurtured people’s desire for new clothes to the point that trends shift weekly. These rapidly changing trends naturally result in more clothing being discarded, ultimately clogging up our landfills. Clothing Purchases on the Rise The Waste and Resources Action Plan (WRAP) in the U.K. estimates the average piece of clothing lasts approximately 3.3 years, but this estimate may be too high.1 According to one British fashion company, many customers only keep new clothing for about five weeks before it ends up being donated or thrown out. Today, the average woman in the U.S. owns 30 different outfits, as compared to the nine she owned in 1930,2 and we throw away approximately 65 pounds of clothing per person each year. Americans spend more on shoes, jewelry and watches than on higher education, and 93 percent of girls say shopping is their favorite activity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates the amount of clothing recycled is equivalent to taking 1 million cars off the road each year.3 But, 13 million tons of textiles still make it to U.S. landfills every year. The American apparel industry grosses $12 billion.4 Estimates are the average family in the U.S. spends $1,700 per person each year on clothing. The dollar amount is not significant as it represents a small percentage of annual spending, but the cost to the environment is steep. Fashion Industry Waste Laden With Toxic Chemicals While it may seem the number of textiles discarded are not important, as most fabric should be biodegradable, the reality is the large amount of clothing thrown away contains more than cotton. The textile industry has taken full advantage of chemicals available to protect the garment or make changes to the product without consideration for how these chemicals affect the environment. Procedures to treat clothing include using specialized chemicals, such as biocides, flame retardants and water repellents.5 Over 60 different chemical classes are used in the production of yarn, fabric pretreatments and finishing. When fabrics are manufactured, between 10 and 100 percent of the weight of the fabric is added in chemicals.6 Even fabrics made from 100 percent cotton are coated with 27 percent of its weight in chemicals. Most fabrics are treated with liquid chemicals to ready them for the fashion industry, going through several treatments before being shipped to a manufacturer. Many chemicals have known health and environmental issues. Greenpeace7 commissioned an investigation into the toxic chemicals used in clothing. They purchased 141 different pieces of clothing in 29 different countries. The chemicals found included high levels of phthalates and cancer-causing amines. The investigators also found 89 garments with nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs). Levels above 100 ppm were found in 20 percent of the garments and above 1,000 ppm were recorded in 12 of the samples. Any level of phthalates, amines or NPEs found in clothing that remains against your body is unacceptable as they are hazardous materials. However, the dangers from these chemicals don’t end when you finish wearing the garment. As the material makes it to a landfill, these chemicals leach out from the fabric and make it to the groundwater. Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) have been widely used in textile marketing and have been linked in epidemiological studies with several different types of cancers in humans. These chemicals are so ubiquitous they’ve been found in the blood of polar bears and found in tap water supplies used by 15 million Americans in 27 states.8 Cheap, mass produced clothing has given many individuals the chance to purchase the current style without breaking the bank. But an initial reduction in price on clothing may be at the expense of both people and the environment. Clothing Is Not the Only Undervalued Factor in the Fashion Industry Producing and selling sustainable clothing becomes more difficult each year as advertisers challenge you to purchase the newest fashion for the season and get rid of what’s in your closet. This increase in demand has created not only a glut in the landfills, but also an industry that undervalues the human lives making the latest fashion. One of the largest death tolls in recent history in the garment industry happened in Bangladesh when an eight-story building collapsed, killing 1,100 people making clothing for high end manufacturers.9 Following the disaster, widespread reforms were promised, but a report from the Human Rights Watch suggests that not enough has been done to protect the lives of garment workers.10 Nearly a decade ago T-shirts and low cost clothing were made in the China province of Guangdong, known as the “world’s workshop.”11 Today much of the work has moved to Dhaka, Bangladesh, as soaring labor costs in China and their gradual shift from low-end to high-end manufacturing sent the garment industry searching for cheaper labor. In California, garment workers are paid by the piece, often amounting to approximately $6 an hour, well below the $10.50 minimum wage standard set in that state.12 Factory owners get away with low wages and poor working conditions as most of the workers are undocumented and afraid to speak out. These sweatshop tactics are what keep the cost of mass-produced department store clothing within reach of the average consumer. At the request of a U.S.-based garment brand, research was launched to explore the issues surrounding undocumented workers in the garment industry.13 They found that many of the people were at great risk of wage and working hour violations that placed their health and safety at risk. The workers were also at risk for abuse and harassment since they were undocumented and unwilling to report the conditions under which they were working. Synthetic Fibers Clogging the Oceans In your home, textile pollution begins in your washing machine. Testing has demonstrated that synthetic microfibers from clothing makes up 85 percent of shoreline debris worldwide.14 They tend to be particularly concentrated in beach sediment near wastewater treatment plants,15 indicating these plants are unable to filter the microfibers from the wastewater before dumping it into the environment. Current studies have found microfibers are more prevalent than microbeads, and are particularly dangerous as the fibers are small enough to easily be eaten by fish and other wildlife, accumulating in the gut and concentrating in the bodies of other animals higher up the food chain. Once in the water, plastics also block sunlight required for plankton and algae to survive. Since these microscopic plants are essential food for many smaller fish, the consequences of this pollution are experienced from the bottom of the food chain to the top — your dinner plate. To gain perspective on this problem, consider that in some ocean waters the amount of plastic outnumbers the amount of plankton 6-to-1.16 Included in these microfibers are toxic dyes, fabric treatments and flame retardants that add to the growing environmental problem posed by clothing. Tests have demonstrated that washing fleece jackets releases between 1.7 to 2.7 grams of microfiber into wash water and eventually into the environment.17,18 Estimates suggest a city of 100,000 people may deposit up to 240 pounds of microfibers every day, an amount equal to 15,000 plastic bags entering the waterways on a daily basis. There are a number of different factors that contribute the amount of fibers your clothing sheds with each washing, including: Age: The older the fleece jacket, the more microfibers are released.19 Quality: Lower quality generic brand fleece can shed 170 percent more over the life span of the product than higher quality fleece. Type: Comparing acrylic, polyester and a polyester-cotton blend, acrylic was the worst, shedding microfibers up to four times faster than the polyester-cotton blend.20 Type of washing machine: Tests show top loading machines release about 530 percent more microfibers than front loading models.21 Water temperature, length and agitation strength of the wash cycle and the type of detergent used: Heat, agitation and harsh detergents all promote the breakdown and shedding of microfibers. There Are Significant Barriers to Recycling Clothing Recycling clothing may seem like the answer to the growing amount of textiles in landfills. However, there are several barriers to this solution, starting with production of the original piece. Much of the waste in the fashion industry is hidden from view before the final product even makes it to the department store racks.22 Ready-made garments are assembled and sewn in large quantities. However, if the material is deemed inadequate due to color differences or when a mistake is made in the order, the garments are discarded. This accounts for up to 5 percent of the factory’s waste. Considering one large factory may produce up to 240 million pieces each year, this means 12 million pieces of clothing may get discarded every year from a single factory. Waste from the cutting room or after a mistake is made in the order makes it to the streets of Bangladesh. Estonian designer and clothing waste researcher Reet Aus commented on the material waste he’s seen as he follows unwanted garments out of the factory gates, saying:23 “You don’t even want to know. You see it by the side of the road being sold or just dumped, but a lot is burned. I know a brick factory near the garment district where the main fuel is garment waste. You can’t really see anything around there, the pollution is terrible. Remember that thanks to the chemicals and finishing agents, used textile waste is basically toxic waste.” With a growing awareness of the need to recycle, reuse or repurpose textiles to reduce the amount ending up in landfills, consumers are calling for more sustainable products. Companies are experimenting with ways to meet this demand while maintaining their own profit margins. The U.S. is proving to be a larger challenge. Jana Hawley, director of the University of Arizona’s School of Family and Consumer Science, studied the textile industry for 20 years. She notes the difference between Europe and the U.S. is that Europeans value high-quality clothing they can keep for longer periods of time. She believes refocusing consumers to buy fewer clothes at higher prices could make a difference in reducing waste.24 Some companies are looking at ways to recycle fabric in clothing that has been discarded, but the barriers are significant. Retailers would first have to motivate consumers to bring clothes back when they are finished with them. Manufacturers would then have to find ways to recycle the fabrics. Polyester may be melted and reformed, but cotton-based fabrics don’t retain strength of the original fiber when broken down, and many textiles are made from a combination of different types of fibers. Commit to Care What You Wear There may not be one answer to reduce the amount of clothing that ends up in landfills and pollutes waterways, but there are several steps you can take that will help. Purchasing clothing made from organic cotton is an excellent start. Natural fiber garments may minimize the amount of microfiber shedding common with synthetic fibers. Consider joining Regeneration International’s “Care What You Wear”25 campaign, which aims to educate consumers and expose problems in the $3 trillion global fashion industry that uses degenerative agricultural practices, exploits laborers and publishes advertising that makes their customers feel inferior when they aren’t wearing the latest style. These problems cannot be fixed overnight, but when people vote with their pocketbook to support brands that take steps to clean their supply chain, we move closer to the solution. To avoid toxic chemicals and reduce environmental pollution associated with the washing and wearing of clothes, consider the following recommendations: ✓ Opt for organic cotton, hemp, silk, wool and bamboo fabrics. While such items typically cost more than non-organic cotton and synthetics, buying fewer items will allow you to spend more on each item. On the upside, higher quality organic items tend to last far longer with proper care, so you get your money’s worth in the end. ✓ Opt for items colored with nontoxic, natural dyes when possible. Businesses investing in organic farming and natural dyes include PACT (undergarments and loungewear), Boll & Branch (bed linens, blankets and towels), Jungmaven (organic hemp and cotton T-shirts), Industry of All Nations (clothing) and many others. ✓ Consider garments labeled with the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label. This indicates the fabric has been tested by an independent laboratory and found to be free of harmful levels of more than 100 substances, including azo dyes, phthalates, heavy metals, pesticides and allergenic dyes. ✓ Avoid screen printed items, as they typically contain phthalates. ✓ Look for the Bluesign System Certification,26 which tells you the item has been manufactured with a minimal amount of hazardous chemicals, or none. Avoid trademarked technical fabrics, as most are coated with chemicals that will eventually wash out. ✓ Be mindful of when and how you wash synthetic clothing. Wash synthetic clothing as irregularly as possible using a mild detergent. Line dry instead of putting them in the dryer. The heat and agitation will break down fibers. Handwashing or using the gentle cycle with cold water will also minimize the shedding of fibers, as will using a front loading washing machine. Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets. They leave a film on the fabric that blocks the wicking ability of the fiber. ✓ Install a microfiber filter on your washing machine.
