So many ordinary objects and experiences have become technologized—made dependent on computers, sensors, and other apparatuses meant to improve them—that they have also ceased to work in their usual manner. It’s common to think of such defects as matters of bad design. That’s true, in part. But technology is also more precarious than it once was. Unstable, and unpredictable. At least from the perspective of human users. From the vantage point of technology, if it can be said to have a vantage point, it's evolving separately from human use. “Precarity” has become a popular way to refer to economic and labor conditions that force people—and particularly low-income service workers—into uncertainty. Temporary labor and flexwork offer examples. That includes hourly service work in which schedules are adjusted ad-hoc and just-in-time, so that workers don’t know when or how often they might be working. For low-wage food service and retail workers, for instance, that uncertainty makes budgeting and time-management difficult. Arranging for transit and childcare is difficult, and even more costly, for people who don’t know when—or if—they’ll be working. Such conditions are not new. As union-supported blue-collar labor declined in the 20th century, the service economy took over its mantle absent its benefits. But the information economy further accelerated precarity. For one part, it consolidated existing businesses and made efficiency its primary concern. For another, economic downturns like the 2008 global recession facilitated austerity measures both deliberate and accidental. Immaterial labor also rose—everything from the unpaid, unseen work of women in and out of the workplace, to creative work done on-spec or for exposure, to the invisible work everyone does to construct the data infrastructure that technology companies like Google and Facebook sell to advertisers. But as it has expanded, economic precarity has birthed other forms of instability and unpredictability—among them the dubious utility of ordinary objects and equipment.
***
The more technology multiplies, the more it amplifies instability. Things already don’t quite do what they claim. The fixes just make things worse. And so, ordinary devices aren’t likely to feel more workable and functional as technology marches forward. If anything, they are likely to become even less so. Technology’s role has begun to shift, from serving human users to pushing them out of the way so that the technologized world can service its own ends. And so, with increasing frequency, technology will exist not to serve human goals, but to facilitate its own expansion. This might seem like a crazy thing to say. What other purpose do toilets serve than to speed away human waste? No matter its ostensible function, precarious technology separates human actors from the accomplishment of their actions. They acclimate people to the idea that devices are not really there for them, but as means to accomplish those devices own, secret goals. This truth has been obvious for some time. Facebook and Google, so the saying goes, make their users into their products—the real customer is the advertiser or data speculator preying on the information generated by the companies’ free services. But things are bound to get even weirder than that.

Flexwork Pays
In Work in America Is Greedy. But It Doesn’t Have to Be., Claire Cain Miller discovers that in a tight job market, more employers are finding that offering flextime (of various flavors) leads to attracting and retaining workers.
Tumblr media
At Credigy, a finance company near Atlanta, any worker can arrive late, leave early or work from home, no questions asked, as long as the work gets done — and even the members of the senior leadership team do so. It’s a different world from most professional services companies, which require long hours in the office.
At Miss B’s Cafe in Louisburg, Kan., servers collaborate on their schedules so they can fill in for anyone who needs a day off, and the kitchen manager bakes brunch pastries the evening before so she can attend yoga on weekend mornings. It’s unlike many service-sector jobs, in which schedules can be assigned at the last minute.
The long and unpredictable hours that have resulted from America’s obsession with work have spread from the so-called greedy professions, like law, finance and consulting, to many other jobs, both salaried and hourly. It’s a major driver of gender inequality: The increasing wage premiums of long hours have pushed many couples with equal educations to take on unequal roles, because if they’re parents, they can’t be on call at work unless someone else is on call at home.
[…]
Driven by competition for workers, more employers have begun offering these benefits (while still providing stable wages and benefits, unlike in the gig economy). Sixty-eight percent allow workers to telecommute as needed, up from 54 percent in 2014, according to the Society for Human Resource Management. Twenty-seven percent offer the flexibility to work outside normal business hours, up from 22 percent.
“For the last 10 years, employers have been used to having it all their own way,” said Martha Gimbel, an economist at Indeed, the job search site. “In a tight labor market, they’re having to compete in a way they’re not used to.”
I was having a conversation recently with Steve Power, the Global President of Deputy, a company that provides a staff management toolkit. In a different aspect of flexwork, we were discussing the topic of how much of a headache last-minute scheduling is for hourly workers, in retail, food service, hospitality and other markets. Power pointed out that in a very tight employment market employers were being pushed to make changes in order to retain workers who could walk across the street to get another job.
One of those changes is making schedules farther in advance, and greater openness to workers having a say in who they work with. Apparently, they are wising up to the reality that workers are happier when working with friends rather than strangers or those they don't like. That might be as big an incentive as higher pay, and the evidence shows self-formed work teams are the most productive.

having a quiet moment of gratitude while i nosh on this froyo. a year ago I was tentatively stepping out of my safe-but-not-entirely-fulfilling salaried job doing communications gruntwork at a labor union and into the uncertain world of flexible, freelance, and remote work.
i started by teaching ESL classes online, nervous both about teaching and at the prospect of staying in this placeholder job for longer than i wanted to. since then i’ve gradually switched over to writing and editing full-time. i’m visiting with family this week, traveling to dc in a couple weeks, planning a trip to ecuador for the late fall, and gearing up move back to nyc after the summer. all the while, every month, my ratio of copywriting-to-pay-the-bills assignments vs. blogging-about-things-i-care-deeply-about assignments shifts a little bit more toward the latter. friends and loved ones turn to me for advice about how to get started freelancing, and i actually feel qualified to answer their questions.
it’s easy to focus on the speedbumps and detours, so i’m real grateful to wonderfully positive loved ones like @avilociraptor and @loveisgreaterthanfear who remind me to periodically meditate on the very-real progress i’ve made and use it to fuel faith in future growth. hopefully next spring i’ll be meditating on how this time last year i was still writing more webpages than blogs and had barely performed professionally yet. or maybe i’ll be thinking about how small my 401k was in 2017, or how few countries i’d visited. either way, it’s nice to document and sit in my optimism every once in awhile.

Home oder Office?
Tumblr media
