I like to imagine their dynamic is also something like this:

im putting on my being mean hat now to say: it is so beautifully ironic that many of the posters on Tumblr who see themselves as authorities on reporting the True Reality of art and culture and looking past the juvenile liberal analysis have made posts about Fallout to say that it is Obviously anti capitalist and About capitalism and anti capitalism, and that obviously this was the author's intent and they intentionally made an anti capitalist game which Bethesda and Modern Liberal Audiences flouder in misunderstanding.

meanwhile Tim Cain has a YouTube channel where he talks in plain terms about gamedev and his work, in which he has an entire video explaining that fallout wasn't meant to be anti capitalist or about capitalism. He infact made it to be and sees it as a critique of various systems of rule and control and states - the eponymous war never changes is this idea in miniature! All societies produce war, which never changes, and thus all societies have a continuity of being a bit shit.

Why would you tie your authoritative understanding of a work of art to authorial intent if you have not actually engaged with the authors and their intentions!? Are you trying to appear as a strutting fool?

mouthwashing spoilers ig bewaaare it's so fascinating just How Much people hate Jimmy Mouthwashing, despite that when it comes to Evil Deeds he actually lags behind a lot of other horror characters.

He's not a serial killer. He's not even really a killer (the only person he hands-on murders is Swansea in implied self defense). He's bitter, entitled, emotionally immature, impulsive, misogynistic, a rapist and enabled by Terminal Nice Guy Curly. Aka, a guy you've worked with, or a pissy uncle that keeps getting invited to christmas out of enforced politeness, your boyfriend's friend who keeps making you uncomfortable and you keep being told that he's a "good guy" deep down. A scumbag of which there are a dime a dozen of.

Any readings that he was a machivallian evil mastermind to me feels like huffing cope. Because the entire game is just Jimmy fuckign, floudering, as his actions suddenly have a lot of consequences that he wasn't emotionally equipped for. He thinks he can fix things, and that it's not really his fault, sure he assaulted Anya but she wasn't supposed to get pregnant from it, sure he crashed the ship in a temper tantrum but he didn't think Curly would get meatified from it. He sends Daisuke into the hutch because he's too much of a coward to do it himself, but he wasn't supposed to get injured from it. Yeah he's treated Anya like shit but she wasn't supposed to kill herself. Swansea comes after him with an axe — that wasn't supposed to happen either. And at the very end, Jimmy martyrs himself to "save" Curly (how saved he gets from being turned into a cryofrozen treat is debatable but I like to think it does ensure his survival, for the themes), so he can have some fucking solace that he managed to set things right before he kills himself — when in actuality all he did was ensure that he will run from taking responsibility for the rest of time.

After all, no one can hold you accountable if you're dead.

Jimmy isn't evil, you the player would be much more comfortable with his character if he WAS evil. He's just pathetic, making excuses, and emotionally lashing out, lashing out over the trauma he inflicted on someone else having consequences for him he sees no obvious escape from for once. Curly can't nepo him outa this one, lads. And all it takes is a few button presses to doom the entire ship.

Then he doesn't even have the guts to own it. He doesn't have the guts to own what a shitty person he is, called out directly in-text by Swansea who like we stan Swansea but I would not be surprised if his list of crimes (minus ship-crashing) looked exactly like Jimmy's, sexual assault included.

And that's the whole point of Mouthwashing innit. The worst guys you know will be some dick who refuses to own up to his own scumbaggery because he can't stand to look himself in the mirror if he does, and the people who cover for him. Evil doesn't exist (the contexts for where I think it does is a different and politically loaded conversation), usually it's just Some Fucking Guy who thought he was too good for therapy and magikarp splashed his path of carnage through other people's lives because of it.

Jimmy could have set things right, but that meant grappling with what a shitbag he is and the damage he caused Anya, and for certain people embittered by their own mediocrity, Armageddon is just the much more glamorous option.

And when he's forced to pick up the pieces and take responsibility, he breaks. Despite how much we hate it, it's very easy in this world to become a Jimmy, to fuck up and hurt people and then just go nuh-uh-nuh-uh until we've convinced ourselves we really did nothing wrong; to brainwash ourselves into thinking running away from accountability is the noble action. Even easier to become a Curly, with a pet Jimmy scrambling around that you can't be fucked to hold accountable because that's like, so messy, and a bother, it's fine, he's just a little grouchy you guys. Yes yes Anya I hear your concerns but like... I dunno, this puts me in a really complicated situation, you understand?

People know this instinctively, and that's why they feel like they have to parade Jimmy around like the Worst Guy Ever, to wash their hands of him, since that's more soothing than thinking about how much of a Boring Regular Guy he actually is. A Boring Regular Guy you've got in your life right now who kind of puts you off but nobody is actively dealing with. You included.

That's probably a large part of why this game haunts people, and why Jimmy just gets under their skin so bad to call him like the most irredeemable guy ever. In a genre he shares with like the Mad Father himself and Sachiko the torture ghost from Corpse Party, or the lady from the Amnesia DLC, etc. etc. (Astarion BG3 is also Objectively a shittier guy than Jimmy Mouthwashing, which isn't a fair comparison because different genres with different stakes, but it is a funny one.)

also he's in yaoi with curly soooooorry it's in the text as he cradles that meated up bod and stares straight into curly's bulging eyeball and forcefeeds him pills. and then his own leg. his love language is just complicated ok dont judge.

100% agreed on your tenna thoughts..... the way people portray him tends to bother me more often than not, because a lot of the time they make him out to be this super cunning, intentionally cruel and manipulative mastermind, when he just... really is not lol

or how, imo, his more possessive/needy behaviors tend to get exaggerated in this really creepy way...to me, if that was really the way he normally behaved, he wouldn't have just let his employees + the weather duo leave him at the end without putting up any kind of resistance - and the latter of whom he!! considers his close friends!!! if there was ANYONE he wouldn't want leaving him it'd be elnina & lanino, but instead he just... lets them go, and then tries really badly to convince himself it's fine and he doesn't care. even at his worst, his intimidation factor comes more from how unwell and desperate he is than any kind of calculated cruelty, and i fully believe he used to be a lot nicer before things started going downhill for him

I totally get why people wanna exaggerate his worst qualities. I think folks want him to at least Somewhat match spamtons freak, especially with Toby's spy vs spy comparison. Its fun, its sexy, and it makes for a good thriller and romance.

...but the thing is...tenna suuuuper isnt made for that fight. Hes way too honest, way too sensitive.

He just isn't that mean, that spiteful, or that driven by power. He wants to be needed, to be desired. And yes exactly re: his employees and especially lanino and elnina. He used their contracts for leverage to follow his orders, but...those were only as good as the crew let it be. When they wanted to quit, they did...and he was helpless to do anything about it. He simply isnt a violent person, not really. Even the fight he has with the fun gang is a Game, with win conditions.

Hes lost control and can hurt them, but that isnt what he wants. He jusy wants them to stay with him, to keep playing with him. He juet doesnt want to be alone again. Abandoned again.

but....i dont blame anyone for wanting it to be true that hes like. Way more masterful than he is. Its more appealing for some than what he actually is: an enormous goober and dork. I like his floudering, his attempts at being intimidating or clever completely falling apart bc hes got too many feelings and cant keep a story straight. My god he tries but he thats an act he just cant keep up man.

But if ppl want a more...business savvy, competitive, and competent tenna to go nose-to-nose with spamton, then i think thats fine. I just dont think that that pans out with how he actually is in canon, personally. And i love tenna and spamtenna for how disparate they are. For the depth of their relationship neither of them intended just...falling into place and then falling apart (that they then never let go of for the next decade plus).

when imogen was little, caius always made a big point to be part of her bedtime routine and that helped them keep track of a routine as well! caius works very well with routine; when putting a baby to bed, it's very important to go through all of her little tasks and make sure she ends up cozy and sleepy with a proper bedtime story and discussing the starmap she has laid out on her ceiling in glow-in-the-dark stickers. he'd say goodnight at the end of their routine, say that they loved her and they were right down the hall. and what was their little thing!

when imogen got older, the two of them lost this routine a bit. imogen started staying up later than caius (who is a night owl regardless) and their goodnights turned quicker and oftentimes none at all- the nights would end with caius getting tired/overwhelmed by the day, putting his dishes away and vanishing into his room. the two of them are perfectly fine with this, as imogen often does the same. caius does miss his baby's bedtime routine, but without a routine he is floudering a bit, unsure when the proper time to say a formal goodnight is, so he usually just gives a "'night" and slips away, knowing she'll be up for a few more hours

when etcetera started living with them, they would rarely say goodnight to each other either- mostly because their bedtime routine is etcetera taking a melatonin and passing out cold before caius is ready for sleepies. their evenings are commonly causal, light conversation in caius's bedroom as he works at his desk, and etcetera goes to bed asap, as she is a sleepy guy and likes to wake up at 5am to watch the sunrise on the water

moving tomorrow which means im almost guaranteed to sleep terribly tonight. i wish i wasnt dreading this move but i am. im sure it will be fine once im there it just feels like i am once again falling down the sinkhole and have zero control over what happens in my life. i couldnt even finish putting all the boxes in the car today because my body gave out on me as is to be expected but like. theres just so much shit about moving you Can't do far in advance. i really tried to pace myself with this move and thought i did a decent job but i feel like im floudering again. i guess its not a big of a deal as it usually is since we still have a week to come back and clean out the dregs, i'm not going scorched earth like usual. but man i just hate how every time i am forced to do a regular adult task im confronted with the fact that i am just always going to be operating at max like 60% of the capacity of a real human being

So I watched The Little Mermaid (the original animated disney version) tonight for the heck of it. Been a while since I've sat down and watched the whole thing in a single sitting.

Afterwards I was like, hmm Eric's voice sorta sounded familar, but I'm not sure if I'm just thinking of this movie or if he was in soemthign else familar

So I look up the movie, and find his voice actor then look at the other stuff he's done, theres not much I've actually seen that I'd recognize him from, so okay I was probably just thinking of this movie. (He also voiced prince charming in the Cinderella sequels, and was spiderman in the old cartoon)

Then I realized that The Little Mermaid 2 wasnt in his list of stuff.

So I look up the sequel to see who voiced Eric there. (As I'm scrolling through the list of actors, most of them came back to reprise their roles. Not sure why Eric's actor didnt. Anyway)

And so I get to Eric's voice actor and who is it?

Its hecking Rob Paulsen. Rob Paulsen who voiced Raphael in the tmnt 1987 cartoon, and Doantello in the 2012 cartoon!!!

(Bonus: One of the other few actors who replaced a voice in the sequel (Flouder's voice actor) was Cam Clarke, who voice Leonardo in the 1987 cartoon)

RSA Dorm: Aqualetta

A Dorm inspired by The Little Mermaid where the dorm drops you on the shore outside of Eric’s Palace. The dorm is always warm, never hot, and is a great place for their members to relax in the castle, the sand, or on the ocean. The air in the dorm reminds you that it’s good to take breaks every once in a while you learn and study. This is one of the most joy filled dorms.

Dorm leader: Prince Rielle - Based on Ariel, A long red haired merman hailing from the Coral Sea, 2nd year
