Rereading over the epilogue of BH and got curious— how much attention do you and Lynx pay to genetics when it comes to colors/patterns of the cats? Like, if a cat in the story is said to be the daughter of another cat, do you ensure their appearance is genetically possible? Or are you more concerned about them being similar enough to be related and focusing more on individual appearances?

I’m always very curious since the community has such a wide range of approaches to cat appearances— from talented artists making whimsical stylized patterns to equally talented ones who can tell you exactly which gene corresponds to different aspects of the designs!

I'm the one in charge of tracking genetics! Part of Quartz Heart's groundedness is about maintaining the genetic accuracy of its characters, which can—and do—play a role in shaping the characters and plot as you've seen with Bramble and Cloud!

So have a grab-bag of information about genetic particulars, my treat:

Firestar is a heterozygous ginger ticked tabby, Rosy is a heterozygous black tortoiseshell ticked tabby, Sparks was a Ruddy Somali (thus a homozygous black ticked tabby), and Nutmeg was a lynx tortie point of humble moggy origins (the type of tabby she was isn't important, but it sure wasn't ticked). Making Cloudpaw a flame point was to give an in-narrative excuse for bringing up the "kittypets and their funny colors" thing.

Goldenflower is actually a cryptic tortie! For whatever reason, her black-based fur doesn't have a huge presence on her body, so everyone thought she was just a regular ol cream tabby. That's how she was able to pass on the black-based X to Bramblekit and make the Tigerclone. If you were to ask me what kind of tort Tawnypelt is, I'd probably say a cinnamon tort (cinnamon does strongly resembles the color of the tawny owl for which she is named), but I'm pretty uncertain about having cinnamon crop up too often in the Clans. Finding a chocolate moggy out in the wild or in someone's house is already a rarity, cinnamon is pretty much only found in pedigree cats—I'm getting off-topic.

Speaking of chocolate, both Teaselfoot and Mousefur are chocolate! Teasel a tabby, Mousey solid.

Silverstream was a black silver tabby, Graystripe is a blue tabby, Mintpaw is a blue silver tabby, and Stormpaw is a black smoke.

Sometimes a character's design has had to change for the sake of genetics. Thankfully, not many have needed this. Sometimes we do change em to fit their name better (Brindleface and Brightflower) or for the sake of a coolass character design (Cloudpaw and Stormpaw).

I have a funny little personal life hack. If something functional but unexciting is aesthetically interesting to me, I will be more likely to consistently use it. If a space has interior design that makes me smile, I will be more likely to keep it clean and organized.

Since this discovery, I've been making my living spaces (especially my studio) very interesting. My bathroom though has been difficult, because my budget is low, but also because the base room is SO GODDAMNED BORING. Cheapest shower stall that would fit, generic (but super functional and easy to clean) sink and vanity set. Landlord Beige. I shared it in a maximalism group on reddit, requesting diy or budget buy suggestions for next steps to make it actually fun.

Let's just say... there really is no greater motivator than spite.

What I had when I asked for help sunday evening + the determination switch flipper. Two little elements I'd already had in place that I enjoy. What I have now (mostly "shopped" from my stash of varied art supplies- I did buy new towels, a laundry basket, and 3 fun colorful and textural and Very Shaped glass vases from thrift). It might have been answered before but i have 2 questions of different types? While reading chapter 28 of A Kindling, i wondered, who are Ravenpaw and Greypaw's parents? If it's spoilers you are not comfortable giving, you can ignore this question.

And the seconde one is which cat/family you had the most difficulty figuring genetics for them? Like a impossible family in canon like say canon FireSand having Leafpool or BrackenBright having Yellowfang for example.

Ahhhh, the old question that keeps biting me in the ass. Not to throw shade on Dullard, but early on I tried to campaign for condensing the first book apprentices into fewer litters as four litters all at around the same time sounded very implausible, but Dullard shot it down. Ravenwing's father is Blackpelt, brother to Darkstripe, and son of Patchpelt. His mother is… undefined. Much like Sandstorm's mother and Lizardtail's parents. Graystripe's mother is Sleettail, daughter of Smallstorm. I wish I had a better chance to reorder (and even inflate) the Thunderclan allegiances and family tree because they're kind of a mess, but it is what it is and I have to live with that.

BrackenBright having Yellowfang was easy. Bright- just means a brightly-colored cat so instead of a ginger bicolor, I made Brightflower a calico. Bracken- means brown tabby and thus Brackenfoot became a brown tabby. Instant Yellowfang!

As for anything else? It's more like all these disconnected cats are giving me problems. The prequels all have connected families, families in other Clans got easier to track during Po3, so now all these random nobodies need to connect to them and it's Fun™️.
