So he got them during a—let's say—crossroads of destiny *wink wink*#Those are his shame tattoos. He's terribly embarrassed by them so the Gaang tease him about them. (He's secretly very proud of them tho)#It's all about the duality inherent to fire (and himself!) as well as protection.#The red dragon has his back at all times. It protects Zuko from his past—from everything that he has left behind and is walking away from.#The Blue dragon guards him front unknown threats. It curls over his left arm (his most vulnerable side) and rests its head over Zuko's heart#It's all very symbolic#Zuko loves his tattoos but is also embarrassed and ashamed of how he got them. He was in a very bad place at the time.#If he got the chance to get his tattoos done *now*—he probably wouldn't do it.#He wouldn't change a thing tho. They're part of who he is. i think theres this idea in the general public that the "best" fanfic gets turned into real books like 50 shades of grey. but the truth is that the best fanfic can never be published as an actual book because its intricately woven into the canon material so its inseparable even if you change the names
#no shade (ha) to 50 shades. ive never actually read it so idk if its good#but imo the idea of creating an au fanfic thats so divorced from the original work is boring! why are you even making a fanfic atp#the only good fanfic is when you can tell the author loves the source material and uses it#the best fanfics ive ever read could never be published as actual books because it wouldnt work without the context of the original story

is this ship popular because it’s legitimately compelling or is it popular because it’s the easiest to decontextualize and write college roommate AUs about?
#i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again 🤷#i’m finally realizing that a big thing for me is what i suppose could be called high-context relationships#where character dynamics are VERY strongly shaped by canon circumstances and events#which AUs render completely incoherent or meaningless#vs. ships that aren’t as context-dependent and are thus friendlier to people looking to write AUs#or project their OCs onto the characters and their relationship#which isn’t like. Evil or anything#it just isn’t my cup of tea#like. obviously it’s compelling to those people in a very different way#but that’s different from it being compelling IN CANON#which is all i personally care about so 🤷🤷
