I did some fun gothic makeup for @theimmortalpenguin and @smolbirbmochi’s new tag! I’m kind of playing with a role I hate in the world but that’s how you get inspiration sometimes! Her name is Monika. Her parents are security company CEO’s and have the world under their thumb, but now monsters(the reason they need security) are trying to gain their rights and become normal people! Monika can’t stand this and took matters into her own hands. People are apparently doing this as an ask game, but I want to answer all of them so I'm gonna. 😄 But I'll save your dash and put it under a cut.

How many words have you written this year? I'm not sure honestly. Mostly because I worked a lot on two different WIPs, and wrote a LOT of words that either got deleted or are in unfinished stories that will never see the light of day. But doing a quick estimate based on what chapters I posted this year, POSTED amount of words is roughly 130,000.

How many works did you publish this year? I finished one WIP, worked on another, and posted 6 other shorter fics.

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? Gosh, I don't know. Tweets and Treats took a surprising amount of work, and I was really happy with how it turned out. And I'm really grateful I managed to land 2 Hot 2 Horny (with Brynn's invaluable help!).

What work of yours has the most hits? This year? 2 Hot 2 Horny, which makes sense. For fics only posted this year, All I Have To Offer You (Is Me).

What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? The beauty of this mess (is that it brings me close to you). This was my first (and probably only) foray into HOTD fic fandom, and it was for Alicent/Rhaenyra which is not a super popular ship as far as I can tell (though I don't know why!!! HAVE YOU SEEN THEM INTERACT??). Anyway. People were very nice about it.

Favorite title you used: Even though it went way beyond what I first envisioned it as, I still think 2 Hot 2 Horny is funny. For fics posted this year only, probably All I Have To Offer You (Is Me), because its from a song forbiddenfantasies likes and is very appropriate for the story.

If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most? I am an equal opportunity lyrics user.

Pairing you wrote the most for this year? Jaime/Brienne, naturally.

Favorite pairing you wrote for this year? JB are always my favorite, but I also really enjoyed writing my two Ian/Poppy fics.

What work was the quickest to write? speak now (or forever hold your peace). I was possessed when I wrote that. It took a day. That's the fastest I've written something since 2020.

What work took you the longest to write? Considering I am still working on Our souls lie down in the grass, I'm gonna go with that one, heh.

How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year? Whew. Too many. Our souls is the only one I'm currently posting, but fics I've started that I really want to finish? 6 or 7 at least.

What’s your longest work of the year? 2 Hot 2 Horny was 115k; for fics posted just this year, All I Have to Offer You is 27.5k.

What’s your shortest work of the year? Technically Tweets and Treats is only 8 words but there's a lot more than that in the images. :D Looks like Snack Drawer is it at 2615 words.

What WIP are you taking into next year with you? Our souls lie down in the grass. I've got a whole chapter written! I'm halfway through the next chapter! I'm gonna write at least one more and then start posting again.

What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag? Across ALL my works it's Alternate Universe - Modern Setting. Which fits.

Your favorite character to write this year? I really enjoyed writing Ygritte in 2h2h, and Jaime in Tweets and Treats, and Poppy in both MQ fics.

The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year? Genna in All I Have To Offer You. I wanted to make sure she was riding a very fine line between cruelty and kindness.

What’s one pairing you want to explore next year? I want to keep writing JB, and I'd really like to write another Poppy/Ian fic.

Which work of yours have you reread the most? From this year? Probably Tweets and Treats.

How many kudos in total did you get this year? Statistics say 3,627, but again that includes 2h2h and Our souls (and also A Job Lot of Junk since I posted a couple fics to that collection) which throws it all off. If I just do the ones posted this year, 1648.

Which work has the most comments? Again, 2h2h but if I take that one out, Tweets and Treats.

Did you do any collaborative works this year? Sadly I did not. Though I talked to Brynn about 2h2h enough that she sort of helped me write it metaphorically.

Did you write any gifts this year? Yes! All I Have to Offer You was a birthday gift for forbiddenfantasies. 2h2h was from the summer exchange in 2021 for Naomignomie, and Our souls was from the festive exchange in 2020 for auntiesocial.

Did you receive any gifts this year? Yes. Pretty-thief wrote a Poppy/Ian fic for me and slips, someone made a cover for HFOG, and trelkez made a Poppy/Ian vid and dedicated it to me.

What do you listen to while writing? Whatever Spotify playlist I have put together for the fic, or the Study LoFi playlist.

Favorite work you wrote this year? Ooh...I honestly don't know. I really can't pick a favorite. They're my children!!

Favorite line/passage you wrote this year? I have a couple, heh. I loved "I shouldn't kiss you in the winter when I'm leaving in the spring," from Our souls. And this bit from Poppy in Snack Drawer honestly makes me laugh every time: She pulled out one of his organic, non-GMO, soy yogurt cups. “You eat like an old man. Plain isn't a flavor, Ian. It's a cry for help." But for how difficult I found writing this year, I'm actually pretty happy with what I produced.

Biggest surprise while writing this year? How damned difficult it was? Heh. I'd been struggling in late 2021, too, but this year was (for me) a struggle. Every word feels like I had to carve it out of my skull slowly and meticulously, when for the first two years of JB fandom it flowed so quickly. Adjusting to my new normal has taken me all year, but I think I've found a slightly better rhythm and I've been able to write more regularly. (It helps that work has also slowed down in the last two weeks; work has eaten up a tremendous amount of my life this year in a way it had not the two years before.) I'm also surprised that I wrote a House of the Dragon fic! Did NOT see that coming. I wasn't even gonna watch the show at the beginning of the year.

The Saga of Backpfeifengesicht

It is August 22nd and the Jaime x Brienne Fic Exchange anonymity is over! And with this, I can finally tell the tale of how I got repeatedly cockblocked fic-blocked by @ajoblotofjunk​ - because without that sly little minx, I never, ever, would have gotten to write Backpfeifengesicht. The thanks and blame lies almost entirely at her feet. 

The following is rather gif-heavy, thanks to some of my favorite shows. Brace yourselves. 

You could assume the story starts with this:

It really started with this:

And then...

And from there it took off!

It ended up being @slipsthrufingers​, @nire-the-mithridatist​ and @firesign23​ who took the helm on the exchange. You’ll notice that I’m not anywhere in these conversations, mostly because I’d never done a fic exchange in my life, let alone run one. The decision to stay a silent supporter in the background was an easy one to make. Surely that way I could stay outside of the chaos and drama that was sure to come. 

Little did I know.

The exchange opened and the numbers ticked up. Best estimates were that fifty writers would sign up and the exchange got TWICE that. It was phenomenal, exciting, wonderful - and thus the work began. What prompts would we get, who would we write for, what would we write?

Then, an email:

I knew @brynnmck​, or at least of her. Best buds with sdwolfpup aka @ajoblotofjunk​, lives in the States and I knew for a fact that she  enjoyed my writing in the past. This is going to be a breeze.

(Oh, I was a sweet, naive summer child.)

There were three different prompt options: rock star fic, vacation fic, and an oh-no-only-one-bed fic. I struck the last one out right away because I’d literally just done a Sansaery story utilizing that plot and didn’t want to repeat myself so blatantly. Like so many others, I went to my friends for help with planning, having one conversation in particular with @forbiddenfantasies1​ that promptly fell out of my brain.

(Three weeks later…)

The vacation prompt seemed the most inviting and I started to wonder, huh, what if Jaime and Brienne are modern adrenaline junkies and they do extreme vacations, like BASE jumping?

...I know nothing about BASE jumping.

And, what’s more, in the course of that time period, I read a fic by sdwolfpup where she referenced BASE jumping between the two of them. I chuckled to myself and tossed that idea aside. Back to brainstorming!

Inspiration struck! I decided on the vacation prompt - with a twist! I started writing! I turned to my good friend @forbiddenfantasies1 aka FF and said I HAVE SOMETHING YAAAAY: 

And I took a second to wonder… wait. Did she tell me this three weeks ago? 

Did I...? 

...oh no. 

Oh, no no no.

I searched our Discord history and...

I stole my friend’s prompt. I STOLE HER PROMPT.

That’s not me throwing a gauntlet, that’s me throwing away my bit of fic in the garbage, where it belonged. THE GALL. THE FAULTY MEMORY THAT LED TO MY WORST ACTION.

FF tried to be gracious about it, though she was in no way at fault. NO WAY. We had a long talk. And then a longer one. And then another where I said ENOUGH! You write yours and I’ll find something different, it’s the right thing to do. 

So I turned to the Rock Star Fic. Music. Guitars. Not my bag, but there’s something there. The brainstorming began again. Then, courtesy of @ajoblotofjunk :

Commence brainstorming, part… whateverthefuck, I don’t even know.

And some more brainstorming. (And the beginning of some A+ dramatics.)

It... was not pretty.

My friends reminded me that it only had to be a thousand words - I could do that, it was highly attainable, I just had to find something. Anything. FF knows Brynn and said that she’s so chill! She’ll enjoy anything, just give it a shot!

I gave it a shot.

The struggle continued. My brain was stuck on the fact that I had been a bad, prompt-thieving friend and then that whatever sdwolfpup already had cooking was surely miles ahead of what I hadn’t been able to piece together. My friends told me to stop being so dramatic. I said:

Finally. An idea came to mind. Something simple, maybe even a single scene. The vacation prompt. Perhaps… Brienne goes on vacation. No one knows her, she doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone, maybe she decides to take a chance on that handsome man at the bar.

Yes, I told my dear @Luthienebonyx. I think that’s what I’m going to do. Brienne meets Jaime in a bar.

ONE HOUR LATER:

HOUR.

I was languishing. Suffering. Bemoaning the very idea that I should even be in the exchange at all!!!

She was understandably confused. 

I was back to the drawing board.

There was a serious discussion of handing off my prompts to another writer, trading with someone so that I could get over my writer’s block - or at least stop getting fic-blocked by a certain talented author who was surely in cahoots with my friend-enemy FF.

FF tried to talk some sense into me. And she handed me, as it has come to be known: Brynnformation.

I decided to give it one. last. go. 

And I remembered.

Nine months later, the time had come for Backpfeifengesicht. 

I held it close to my chest. Very close. So close that I stopped checking tumblr for fear of discovering that sdwolfpup had caught the scent of my story in the air and eclipsed me yet again. When my friends asked how it was going, I was perfectly reasonable, totally chill, very:

I was informed that sdwolfpup had gone on vacation, THANK GOD, I WAS SAFE FOR A WEEK.

After I got past the murderous paranoia, I started to put a story together. Vacations. Road trips. Baseball. And, as it said in the prompts, Brynn enjoys herself some J/B lovin’. FF pointed out that Brynn had a fondness for lovin’ that involves tables.

And with that Friend-Enemy FF became Friend FF once more, as she should always be considered.

Yes. It was Backpfeifengesicht’s moment to shine.

(I… stopped checking sdw’s tumblr. For my own sense of self and stability. If she came up with a random german name, I was sure to throw in the towel.)

I wrote and wrote and wrote some more. I refused to let my friends see it for fear of jinxing the whole damn thing. I was nearly halfway through when I had a truly horrible day at work and the only thing that cheered me was to break my silence and share a bit of it with @forbiddenfantasies and @elizadunc - they were new to my whining in ways that Slips, Nire, Luthien and Firesign had grown immune to.

Their response?

Though I was still in a mindset more like:

FF: Sami, stop freaking out.

Sami: I CAN’T.

I looped in the rest of my friends, so they could beta and also convince me not to bin the entire thing all over again. It was the work of SIX PEOPLE to keep me from giving up this whole damn thing.

J/B Fic Insta-Rec!

I have been slowly savoring this fic over the last week or so and I finished it in a rush today because it was like an emotional avalanche getting through to the end and it has so few hits and I really think you all should read it.

Stay Gold by Renega

This fic starts with Jaime in 8x05 and makes sense and value out of everything that happened in the back half of season eight of Game of Thrones (and even before that) and presents an ending that is like warm sunshine earned after a dark night.

This is one of the few post-s8 fics I’ve read where Brienne gets to just be sad. She’s angry, of course, at first, but she is allowed to grieve Jaime’s loss - both by the story and the characters in them. Everyone loves Brienne here, too, rightfully so, and seeing her venerated in such warm and loving ways made me so happy.

There are multiple POVs used throughout, not just Jaime and Brienne’s, and it lets us see these characters in so many beautifully moving ways, as well as allows the author to interweave the infrastructure of rebuilding a land destroyed by years of war. The Tarth scenes are so gentle and quiet and the evolving relationship between Selwyn and Jaime was a highlight.

Some of my favorite moments in this fic don’t have anything to do with Jaime and Brienne, either, and the Seaworths to a person are the BEST. I even liked Bran as King in this story, which I genuinely thought was an impossible thing to sell me but HERE WE ARE. But every character gets treated with love and I think that’s the thing I liked most about the fic: it’s so tender but doesn’t feel like unearned fluff. This is a story about what happens after the war, when you think all you have is grief and the work of continuing on and you discover that the bonds you forged have built you a family and a foundation from which to build something new and bright.

It really moved me and I hope y’all give it a read and let the author know if you enjoyed it!

I was really intrigued by @paintingcranes​ prompts when they crossed the Knight Writing path, but I didn’t want to sign myself up for a 20k+ idea because I only had a week before the first posting day and I wanted to get the fic done. Thankfully, slipsthrufingers stepped up and walked me through the one that intrigued me the most, this photo of an abandoned space:

Paired with the Mary Oliver quote they prompted as well--“Attention is the beginning of devotion”--I knew I had to try it. 

This fic had a few awkward starts and stops before I settled into it, but once I figured out what I was doing, it flowed pretty well. 

Thanks to Brynn again some more forever for beta’ing, and to slips for the jam session and encouragement, and forbiddenfantasies for just being herself and holding my hand.

Sexuality: Straight, I think. Gwendoline Christie and Gillian Anderson have made me question that a bit.

Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff. And if given even the smallest opening, I will go on my thesis-length thoughts of why that is the best house. And don't get me started on how they are derided for being fair and loyal and hardworking like those are somehow bad traits. I also have a splash of Gryffindor but that's only because I am generally very chill but will go toe to toe with anyone and anything if I feel like there's an injustice to address. That was fun for me in school. The principal loved me.

Favorite animals: I like my neighbor's baby 3 legged goat more than most humans. It likes to show up at my front door, and I like it too.

Average hours of sleep: 5. But that's only because I'm a grown up and since nobody can force me to sleep at a reasonable hour, I just keep staying up.

Dogs or cats: I really like both, especially if they will let me snuggle them.

Why I made this blog: Because I kept seeing "Follow me on Tumblr" at the end of fics I loved, and I was basically like "hell yeah I will."

How I came up with my url: So I've explained this before, but in case someone is curious, here we go. I had a cousin two years older than me who had been my very best friend and partner in crime since birth. We did everything together, including read and write fanfiction back when we were innocent (used loosely) little preteens and teens. She was my fandom freak out buddy. Her screename was forbiddenfantasies, for which I mocked her relentlessly. Because come on bro...really? Not at all obvious.

She died a few years ago, and I stopped reading fanfics and I stopped writing completely. It was like a light died. So when I got sucked into fandom again all these years later, it only took me a moment to decide on my name. And it is still cliche and cringey, but I grin every time I see it because it feels like she is here with me, ignoring my mockery.
