HIII! The ask box finally decided to work for me- 😭 I have a few questions....again.
Have The Archivists faced any dangerous threats? (Not including the Titans)
Can Archivists been born from a Gamma ray Burst and not just a KiloNova?
Have the Archivists ever considered the existence of other Cosmic beings from different dimensions?
Does The Wayfarer still have the skull of the extinct species?
How old is The Anatomist? (Are they in the 100 thousands or maybe in the 1 million range)
Would they attempt to help Climate change, deforestation, humans driving animals to extinction, just planet destroying stuff in general on Earth?
All lot of questions- Sorry about that. 😓
I have no clue what the issue with the inbox is. Some of the asks also disappeared when I know for a fact I got them and was planning to respond later. But glad this one survived. Gotta say, it's a rapid ask fire, so I'll short-answer them
1. So yeah, there aren't many things that can hurt them, but celestial beings can damage each other. Encountering other children of the stars is rare, but if that happens, and it's difficult to predict what a semi-conscious mass of magic decides to do or another far more unstable collector, but they havent seen them for a long time. As for non-physical threats, at this point, they are mostly desensitized to mortals, but that's also something they found out: how bad people can be when they are scared of someone, like Belos with no remorse throwing Collectros disc to be forgotten. I'm pretty sure if he could ensure more to control a pretty powerful power source he would even if that powersourse was a kid and I dont belive he was the only person to ever have this approach
2. Maaybe? In my version, children of the stars are born from events where a big release of energy and magic occurs. Kilonovae typically release energy of 10^41 to 10^43 joules, GRBs typically release something around 10^44 to 10^48 joules. I think it would create a celestial being, but I'm not sure if it would really be a collector or rather some other celestial creature that is simmillar but not the same. I'd like to think that collectors are all born from the same astronomical phenomena, especially given how rare they are (and it plays a little bit into siblings motive), but I dont really have a good reason why it cant be Gamma Rey too
3. They are aware of other realms, but traveling between them is bit more tricky and they already try to keep up with everything that goes on in the galaxy they are currently in. I think there is some quirk to titan magic that makes the travel between dimensions really possilbe or at least more controlled
4. yup! they took more keepsakes but the skull is preserved in Way's corner of the archive
Tumblr media
5. It's closer to billions in range. For collectors to be able to look over evolution, stars coming into existence, millions of years isn't enough. Anatomist was one of the younger collectors when the first archives were established and everyone split to their own, but it was still a long time ago. I imagine it takes a very long time for immortal beings to grow up. At the point of the story, they aren't even really mature
6. I know it's currently still a theory, but there are articles about Earth currently experiencing 6th mass extinction, the previous one being that one that took out the dinosaurs. The archivists' goal is to preserve life, and if it's dying, that mission is sabotaged. So yeah, they would probably try to stop it, but I don't think they'd take kindly to the one species that caused it so the earth after their interference wouldnt be the same

GRB 080319B
For a month, I was a smudge.
A mute monk in the bathtub, lukewarm water running as dull colors rolled around my head like fractured, aged marbles. Thoughts lost strength before fruition. I called out of work once a week, faked a cough, a car accident, another funeral. When I did make the drive out to the office, I spent most of the time typing a word, deleting the word, and typing the word again. I stopped taking calls. Mary left me beautiful voice messages. I listened to them while I laid on the couch, sprawled out like an active disease, furious tears streaming down my face. I knew it was stupid. A feeling cannot kill you. But then, I was being diminished. I was receding.
I know you don’t feel well right now. But listen, I have these neighbors who still have their Christmas lights hanging up. It’s April. I sorta hope they leave them up all year round.
I stayed frozen for a few weeks.
Vitamin D and herbal teas, coffee and long novels. But then, I can’t explain it. It was Friday afternoon. Just a Friday afternoon.
It began when I left the office. A slow bloom rose throughout my entire body.
I noticed how all the buildings stood scraping against the most gorgeous, thin blue of the dying afternoon, rising evening. The wind felt kind. I didn’t go home. I went to the supermarket and held an orange in my hand, feeling the small indents with my thumbs, smelling the bright zest. It was as though everything was real again. That night, I bought a pack of cigarettes. I hadn’t smoked since I was nineteen. But I inhaled and let out a giant laugh at how lightheaded I felt, I walked through the streets like that, laughing and laughing, the laughter like the magician’s scarf being pulled out and out. It was a fantastic feeling. I felt fearless. As though I could scoop the fear and pain and shit out of myself like a pudding. I had capabilities.
When I got home, I rushed in and had a shot of blueberry vodka and opened the windows and called Mary; she answered within a couple of rings. That gorgeous rodeo clown. I loved her as much as I loved anything.
I never thought I’d hear your voice again, she said. But this worries me, y’know. How blue was the sky today?
I’m coming to see you, I said. Not tonight. But soon. I’ll stumble on your porch like a speedball. The sky was fantastic. I’m smoking.
Hm, she said. Listen, stay out of trouble. A feeling cannot kill you. I’ll save some tea for you. Come anytime. Come anytime.
I couldn’t sleep. I played the same image in my mind, again and again. And words fizzed in and out too quickly for me to catch them. A church of nukes. Do you understand what you are signing? Perfume made of whale semen. Dominoes.
In the morning, I could feel the angels looking over me. I imagined them like teenagers, shooting the shit, smoking and coughing and pointing. I spent the weekend in bars, meeting everyone on earth. A woman with a strong russian accent who told me the world was going down the toilet and we were all there for the ride. A man who asked me for three cigarettes and then told me he had coke if I wanted some. I spread a little on my gums. But it was a fifteen minute headache, it had nothing on the feeling within me, the glow which propelled and drove me around. I fucked the russian woman.
I called out of work for the week, claimed I’d contracted HIV and needed time to grieve. I felt awful about the lie. It was ridiculous. But anything could happen. And I wasn’t wasting my time at a computer when I could see patterns in the streets. I wore a long, leather coat and wrapped it around my waist. And beneath, a black thong strung across my hips. I felt like a machine, I felt electric as I walked through the advertisement pus of Times Square, a cigarette beneath my teeth. I rode the trains for hours, befriending the other passengers. And for a moment, I forgot my address. It was nine in the morning. It was the middle of the night. I got nervous anytime I saw a police officer; there was a criminal in my heart. What was I doing?
I went down to the village to visit Mary as promised. I felt breathless, sensitive to light. I was tired. It’d been years since sleep. I felt as though I was dying. A star exploding in reverse. Mary would know what to do.
I knocked on her door and she answered as quick as she answered the phone. I smelled her vanilla scent. It made me nauseous. But I was so glad to see her; so glad she was there. I dated Mary for eight years. There was nobody on earth who knew me better than she did.
You don’t look great, she said. Are you eating?
Not really, I told her as i walked into her apartment. I feel like I need a touch up. My engine is black. I’m running out of oil. I think I lost my job. I don’t know what day it is.
It’s Saturday, she said. Three in the afternoon. It’s May and spring is here. Have a seat.
I sat on her couch.
I think I’ve been hexed, I said. A spell has been put on me. A poison.
You’ve been here before, she said. Remember? That arrest in Ohio? Disturbing the peace? And the outburst in the museum. Banned from the gas station. A wild iris in your eyes. A desire for mountains. The call is coming from inside the house, Adam.
Mary gave me a cherry tart. I ate half of it and began to weep. Mary gave me a sleeping tablet. And when I woke up, I was horrified.
When I got home, Mary had left me a voicemail. I laid down naked on the floor and listened.
You’re a wife with cold feet. Shivering in the dressing room. You’re an astronaut grazing the face of the moon, blind to the wars on earth. You’re brave. You’re pathetic. You go to the amusement park to weep. You walk out onto the avenue to dance. You sneak into a club. And you feel nothing when the band plays, the gilded brass and vulgar scatting.
And maybe you deserve it.

Do you have thoughts about Gupta's covarying coupling constants + tired light explanation that replaces the need for dark matter?
well. yes, i like them both. tired light as zwicky originally proposed it is pretty much ruled out (it would make distant objects blurrier than we observe) but gupta has been making the rounds ("universe is twice as old as we thought") and other formulations of tired light are still publishable
the hard problem in cosmology is like... once again what i've been calling a "invisible distribution network problem" -- a lot of the work einstein put into relativity was publicity. he was the heavyweight champion of convincing other people his model was more useful than others. now we have dozens of competing, equally valid explanations. the next generation of telescopes will sort some of this out, and the current new ones are putting range constraints on it (JWST's very old massive galaxies would be explained by a much older universe), but at this point none of them have anything comparable to einstein's one-punch KO of gravitational lensing observed at the 1919 eclipse
any model that's going to supersede the concordance model is going to require a similar amount of convincing everybody else in the field that it can generate more robust results. the likeliest possibility is that the answer has already been published and remains buried in obscurity, possibly for lack of confirming observations or development as a research avenue (or for a lack of connecting the dots, perhaps the observation that will confirm it has not yet been recognized in the glut of available observational data). so... the hard problem of cosmology is that in order for something to become the most commonly accepted model, it has to become the most commonly accepted model
covarying constants is one of what i would call "nasty possible solutions," along with like, discarding isotropy as an axiom. like, sure, that could be the answer, but then what the fuck do you do? how do you measure whether the strength of gravity is changing if it changes the weight of your standard measure proportionally along with it? how do you build a standard candle distance ladder if there are significant anisotropic variations? (that was vera rubin's second forgotten hypothesis, the rubin-ford effect, which has been i think unfairly disregarded for flimsy reasoning, that it must average out over larger distances than the area she was studying. i think it's disregarded because the implications would be inconvenient. unfortunately it's kind of rearing its head again in things like gamma ray burst surveys of extremely large structure, like the HCB great wall, but that's not a one-punch KO because it relies on a small dataset of about 30 GRBs)
finer point, this is all more related to dark energy (expansion) and not dark matter (galaxy rotation). but i knew what you meant lol

Title: Riya's Impreza GRB
Before Riya 🐰🏎️ drove her "TRUE IMPREZA" 🇯🇵🚘 in the form of the "GDB-F" model (since 2017), she was driving the "GRB" model drifting the tight curve while in search of an opponent (before she gave the keys to me 🚘🔑🫲).
• Why I put an open close parenthesis? 🤔 The answer, was her "GRB" model doesn't match Spot's IMPREZA GDB-C model. Plus, unlocking different colors after 99 games (which used to be 60 games) could be time-consuming. ⌚
• I've already covered this explanation topic, years ago. So, if you want to see it then please → [CLICK ME!]. BTW: Please forgive my lack of basic sentences, I was quite butchered back in 2017. 😅

There's this creepypasta called "The Holders" where almost every entry for that story begins with the legend "In any city, in any country, there's a mental institution or halfway house" well, today I did that, not waiting to find a cursed object or anything, but I went to a mental health hospital for reasons I'm not discussing here, but i had to go to the lowest lever of the building, and once I was there, I got a warning on my Digimon Dock in the middle of a waiting room. That aside the warning was mostly wanted, since apparently someone followed me from the station, yes, it was Vamdemon.
We got out of the building and confronted him under a bridge, not only about why he was there, but about the sermon he gave us last night, and we got our answers. This Vamdemon is part of a cult that veneers a corrosive virus known as GRB or "Gulus Realm Burst" and he has been following our activity since we started our crusade against the police forces, this because the police has been working with the military, since they are both interested in the use of GRB in combat, and specifically, to make the Digimon go berserk and be able to fight nonstop while burning their data...
After revealing this shocking information, that made my concerns more real than ever, Vamdemon said that he will be "searching to avenge the lost honor of its Master by going against the organized forces too" which basically means that he will be supporting our fight, or, at least I hope it means that, whatever it is, at least we know that he's not against us... for now.
Oh yeah, and one last thing, after all this Vamdemon chit chat, I finally asked the Gammamon brothers and Ghilliedhumon if they would be joining our cause, and all of them said yes! So we have three more team members and one external ally I guess, of course, the Gammamon pair needs to be actually trained, but we'll be working on that sooner than later, the team is more than ready to fight, and you know, that I'll keep you updated.

Wolf-Rayet 104 'pinwheel' star reveals a surprise
A recent study reveals that the famous Wolf-Rayet 104 "pinwheel star" holds more mystery but is even less likely to be the potential "death star" it was once thought to be.
Research by W. M. Keck Observatory Instrument Scientist and astronomer Grant Hill finally confirms what has been suspected for years: WR 104 has at its heart a pair of massive stars orbiting each other with a period of about 8 months. The collision between their powerful winds gives rise to its rotating pinwheel of dust that glows in the infrared, and spins with the same period.
The pinwheel structure of WR 104 was discovered at Keck Observatory in 1999 and the remarkable images of it turning in the sky astonished astronomers. One of the two stars that were suspected to orbit each other—a Wolf-Rayet star—is a massive, evolved star that produces a powerful wind highly enriched with carbon. The second star—a less evolved but even more massive OB star—has a strong wind that is still mostly hydrogen.
Collisions between winds like these are thought to allow hydrocarbons to form, often referred to as "dust" by astronomers. When discovered, WR 104 also made headlines as a potential gamma-ray burst (GRB) that could be aimed right at us. Models of the pinwheel images indicated that it was rotating in the plane of the sky, as if we were looking directly down on someone spinning a streaming garden hose over their head.
That could have meant that the rotational poles of the two stars might be pointed in our direction as well. When one of the stars would end its life as a supernova, the explosion might be energetic enough to create a GRB that would beam in the polar directions. Since it is located right here in our own galaxy, and seemed to be aimed right at us, at the time, WR 104 gained a second nickname—the "Death Star."
Hill's research, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, is based on spectroscopy using three of Keck Observatory's instruments—the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS), the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager (ESI), and the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSPEC). With these spectra, he was able to measure velocities for the two stars, calculate their orbit and identify features in the spectra arising from the colliding winds. There turned out to be a very big surprise in store though.
"Our view of the pinwheel dust spiral from Earth absolutely looks face-on (spinning in the plane of the sky), and it seemed like a pretty safe assumption that the two stars are orbiting the same way," says Hill. "When I started this project, I thought the main focus would be the colliding winds and a face-on orbit was a given. Instead, I found something very unexpected. The orbit is tilted at least 30 or 40 degrees out of the plane of the sky."
While a relief for those worried about a nearby GRB pointed right at us, this represents a real curveball. How can the dust spiral and the orbit be tilted so much to each other? Is there more physics that needs to be considered when modeling the formation of the dust plume?
"This is such a great example of how with astronomy we often begin a study and the universe surprises us with mysteries we didn't expect," muses Hill.
"We may answer some questions but create more. In the end, that is sometimes how we learn more about physics and the universe we live in. In this case, WR 104 is not done surprising us yet."
IMAGE: An artist's concept of the famous Wolf-Rayet 104 "pinwheel star," previously nicknamed the "Death Star." New research conducted from Maunakea, Hawaiʻi using three Keck Observatory instruments reveals the orbit of the two stars are angled 30 or 40 degrees away from us, sparing Earth from a potential gamma-ray burst (GRB). Because according to that schedule, assignments were supposed to be may 10-12th, but I didn’t receive my assignment until June 14th… so in light of assignments going out later, will the posting date change? I’m just wondering
i emailed and posted about schedule change over than two months ago. i still don’t have time to change the old schedule on the sidebar.

X-Ray Rings Around a Gamma Ray Burst Image Credit: NASA Swift Obs.; Data: B. Cenko (NASA's GSFC), A. Beardmore (U. Leicester) et al.; Processing: J. Miller (U. Michigan)
Explanation: Why would x-ray rings appear around a gamma-ray burst? The surprising answer has little to do with the explosion itself but rather with light reflected off areas of dust-laden gas in our own Milky Way Galaxy. GRB 221009A was a tremendous explosion -- a very bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) that occurred far across the universe with radiation just arriving in our Solar System last week. Since GRBs can also emit copious amounts of x-rays, a bright flash of x-rays arrived nearly simultaneously with the gamma-radiation. In this case, the X-rays also bounced off regions high in dust right here in our Milky Way Galaxy, creating the unusual reflections. The greater the angle between reflecting Milky Way dust and the GRB, the greater the radius of the X-ray rings, and, typically, the longer it takes for these light-echoes to arrive.

Ghost game ending thoughts spoilers ahead. Leave now if yw don't want then.
Tumblr media
So. Gammamon was a Naruto....poor kid.
Tumblr media
Koutaro asking the right questions. The answer yes and they are hot as hell. Like... WHOA MAMA!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hiro fucking uses Siriusmon blade and nobody says shit about it! COULD YOU ALWAYS DO THAT? WHY HAVEN'T YOU?! CAN THE OTHER DO THAT?
The with Hiro and Gammamon scene made me cry cause I was legit scare they would have killed Gammamon after this. And don't tell me they wouldn't have because I remember Tamers ending from when I was a kid and that shit killed me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This entire fight was fast but it was great seeing all the Gammamon evolution running Gulus' pocket. And he takd defeat pretty gracefully. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
HE HAS A MOUTH AND HANDS! WHAT THE FUCK?! He swallowed gulus.
Tumblr media
Look this little twerp smug face. I love it!
Also I can't post it cause it went past the limit for pics but Gulus take over Gammamon body and says he can't hurt anyone because Gamma made him swear to a bunch of rules. And then Gulus says that he from fucking space and thst his world was destroy by other creatures! And that he was using GRB to make an army to kill them! But that doesn't answer one. Single question. HOW DID HE END UP IN GAMMAMON BODY?! I swear we need a movie or some. This didn't answer everything. Overall I like Ghost game but this ending was an ending.... all I know his despite everything.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna miss these two. And Ruli, Kiyo, Jellymon and Angoramon. They were all fun character with great interaction and designs.

ERM ABOUT THE WRITING REQUESTS…. MAYBE LIL MURDOC AND HANNIBAL FOR THE SOUL? TOTALLY UP TO YOU THOUGH I JUST THINK THEYRE SILLY
OMG YES WE NEED MORE MURDOC AND HANNIBAL
Inspired by something else I read somewhere but I forgot the @ and where I read it so if yk pls tell me so I can credit 😭 anygaysss
Murdoc pov
I sit on my bed and play with the bandage on my cheek. Dad's been drinking again. But this time Hannibal helped me clean it up and but the bandage, he didn't do a good job but better then me. A few seconds later I hear a knock on my door "yea?" I ask a bit scared In case it's dad, Hannibal opens the door. "Hey uh I'm going to a concert at that janky bar down town wanna come?" He asks. I'm a bit surprised, this has to be a joke or a prank, "uh sure" I answer hesitantly, Hannibal comes into my room more, he's holding clothes and a small think of eyeliner and eyeshadow that he probably stole from somewhere. "Ok we leave in 10, put these on then I'll try fix that ugly face of yours" he says as he throws some clothes at me then closes the door. I stand and put the clothes on, it's a slightly ripped black Sabbath shirt and some black pants with also rips and a pocket chain. It looks somewhat decent but smells of alcohol, cigarettes and cheap cologne. I open the door "I'm done" I say, Hannibal comes back into the room "stay still or I'll stab your eye out with this" he says as he starts putting what I'm guessing eyeliner on me then a very small bit of eyeshadow. "I did the best I could now come on let's go before dad comes out for another beer" he says then we begin walking out of the house. I step and a floor bored cracks, me and Hannibal look at eachother then run. "Idiot! Your dead when we get back!" He says while running, I try to catch up but hes older and runs faster. "Sorry!" I yell out while running. A few minutes later we both slow.down out of breath. "Goodluck when we get back, I'm not gonna stick up for you this time" he says as he catches his breath, I roll my eyes "yea yea I know" I say, a breeze flys by and I shiver since I'm only wearing a a ripped shirt and ripped jeans. "Hanni?..can I borrow your jacket please" I ask quietly, he groans and gives it to me "you mess it up even by a stich then I'll tell dad you hid his beer last week" I nod and put on the jacket "thanks". A few minutes later we get to the place, it's a janky bar in downtown, there's music playing loudly and a bunch of people in and outside, they all look like pink rockers or something. Hannibal grbs my arm "follow me cause if you get lost I won't try and find you" I nod and follow him, we get up close to the stage. A few minutes later the music gets louder and people start singing and playing on stage, the bass player catches my eye, such a cool instrument. Maybe I'll do that in the future but for now I'll focus on the best day of this childhood

[GG spoilerish speculation for final episode]
Tumblr media
This ep answered a good chunk of questions to me, like Gulus' deals and the black variant digi. Also what happened to the Digital World and the digimon.
Some people tried to edit some shots of those hooded people-or-digimon and then are theorizing Gulus might have had another partner before. Some are even debating of this "girl" being Hiro's mother, but i prefer to not focus on this part yet.
The thing is, Gulus refers to Gammamon's body as his. It implies that maybe Hokuto himself discovered about Gulus, and then something happened between them. Maybe Hokuto sent Gammamon to Hiro in order to make Gammamon be raised properly and avoid Gulus return. I mean, Gammamon himself spoke like a baby in the earlier episodes, and then he started to develop like a toddler and now he's able to communicate like a child-or-a-teen. But this means Gulus was Gammamon's past life. Possibly linked to another human being? If not linked to a human, maybe he was some evil lord.
Because Gulus says he was trying to form an army of strong digimon via "eat or be eaten" philosophy. This explains why the Digital World became ill and chaotic, or maybe why some high-rank digi-entity cut the connection with the human world and isolated the DW in order to prevent the GRB from spreading to other places.
... Yeah, i take it back about my previous posts saying that Gulus was actually some anti-hero. He's a borderline villain now imo.

i suppose you guys will start hearing about this sometime next year, but there have been over 200 candidate gravitational wave observations since the start of ligo o4. the total from the first 3 operating runs (mostly o3) was like 90, so this triples the size of the stellar graveyard and it's only been a few short weeks. this isn't, i imagine, a well-kept secret on purpose -- everybody who's anybody in the field is probably being run ragged by the sheer volume of research they now have to pursue, and it's left to me, nobody, to tell you that something is going on. (this is also COMPLETELY separate from the gw background detection using pulsar timing arrays, a thing i am thrilled to have been able to premonish years in advance and have been meaning to write about, which had no affiliation with ligo)
i suppose it would have been headlining news if any of these were coincident with observations in the optical spectrum (and this is also fairly easy for me to determine, but i haven't checked religiously). i've already covered why these events are biased to the earlier universe and do not often appear locally. the nearest one (the 2017 nobel prize kilonova, although iirc there was another, possibly nearer event with no optical counterpart) was 120mly away, approximately the entire width of the filament on which our galaxy's supercluster resides. i have not gotten a clear answer whether it was on the same filament lengthwise (this is probably an easy question for better astronomers than me, who can read a map and know offhand what structure a region of sky contains). that does seem likeliest, since the voids between filaments appear to be larger than the filaments themselves. the vast majority of these events are faint ripples from other filaments, probably too distant to even catalogue the galaxies they contain
anyway the HCB wall (largest theorized superstructure) was based on a dataset of like, 20 gamma ray bursts. so, when you start hearing about this, it's probably going to be in the form of a significant revision to our concept of superstructure
this is slightly complicated by the fact that grbs are pointlike sources and gwes are a hideously vague smear of probability across the sky -- but if they appear to be biased toward a certain area, like the trans neptunian objects, then we'll never stop hearing about it, much like the apocryphal trans neptunian planet nine

NASA Missions Study What May Be a 1-In-10,000-Year Gamma-ray Burst
Top picture: XMM-Newton images recorded 20 dust rings, 19 of which are shown here in arbitrary colors. This composite merges observations made two and five days after GRB 221009A erupted. Dark stripes indicate gaps between the detectors. A detailed analysis shows that the widest ring visible here, comparable to the apparent size of a full moon, came from dust clouds located about 1,300 light-years away. The innermost ring arose from dust at a distance of 61,000 light-years – on the other side of our galaxy. GRB221009A is only the seventh gamma-ray burst to display X-ray rings, and it triples the number previously seen around one. Credit: ESA/XMM-Newton/M. Rigoselli (INAF)
Bottom Pic: This illustration shows the ingredients of a long gamma-ray burst, the most common type. The core of a massive star (left) has collapsed, forming a black hole that sends a jet of particles moving through the collapsing star and out into space at nearly the speed of light. Radiation across the spectrum arises from hot ionized gas (plasma) in the vicinity of the newborn black hole, collisions among shells of fast-moving gas within the jet (internal shock waves), and from the leading edge of the jet as it sweeps up and interacts with its surroundings (external shock). On Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, a pulse of intense radiation swept through the solar system so exceptional that astronomers quickly dubbed it the BOAT – the brightest of all time. The source was a gamma-ray burst (GRB), the most powerful class of explosions in the universe.
The burst triggered detectors on numerous spacecraft, and observatories around the globe followed up. After combing through all of this data, astronomers can now characterize just how bright it was and better understand its scientific impact.
“GRB 221009A was likely the brightest burst at X-ray and gamma-ray energies to occur since human civilization began,” said Eric Burns, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He led an analysis of some 7,000 GRBs – mostly detected by NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Russian Konus instrument on NASA’s Wind spacecraft – to establish how frequently events this bright may occur. Their answer: once in every 10,000 years.
The burst was so bright it effectively blinded most gamma-ray instruments in space, which means they could not directly record the real intensity of the emission. U.S. scientists were able to reconstruct this information from the Fermi data. They then compared the results with those from the Russian team working on Konus data and Chinese teams analyzing observations from the GECAM-C detector on their SATech-01 satellite and instruments on their Insight-HXMT observatory. Together, they prove the burst was 70 times brighter than any yet seen.
