50 Years Since Emergency : Political, Legal & Ethical Analysis
The 1975 National Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi marks its 50 years this year. National Emergency suspended few fundamental rights and curtailed civil liberties for 21 approximately months. Triggered by political unrest and a court verdict, it saw press censorship, mass arrests, constitutional misuse and detention of the opposition party leaders. This dark chapter remains a stark reminder of the democracy turning into autocracy and the need for dissent.
