hey this post on bluesky fucking sucks.
the dishonesty here is palpable. the op of this post complained that they spent hours editing a video only for it to get 200 views. this is only important if you think views/follower counts correlate directly with income. if you want to be an influencer who makes art, just fucking say so. but this is not the point of simply "being an artist".
you absolutely do not "have" to spend hours of your day making tiktoks and reels showing your workspace and process and daily life and upcoming releases. it is a conscious decision to spend your time being an entertainer for children who consume exclusively short-form media instead of enjoying and honing your craft.
please don't let posts like this make you think that this is the "only way" of being an artist in the social media era and that if you don't document your entire process, you're some kind of failure. don't let posts like this guilt you into thinking you aren't doing enough. freelancing obviously involves marketing yourself, i'm not saying "advertising your work is bad", but if you are at any time fretting over the tedium of making a process tiktok maybe take a few steps back and evaluate if the time you are spending catering to the algorithm is proportionate to the time you are spending actually doing the things you like.

"I asked ChatGPT-" Why not just Google it? And not read the Gemini AI summary at the top but just... actually Google it. Just like... learn the information that you want to know instead of having to have the robot put it all in a neat little wrapper for you like you're a helpless child.
Like seriously every time someone tells me they ChatGPT-ed something it just makes me think of how we have all the information we could ever want at our fingertips to read and absorb and think about at all times, but they have to have the robot chew it up for them and vomit it out. Sometimes it isn't even right. What if you just Googled whatever you need to know, click on a link to go and read an article or something, and maybe you'll learn even more than you bargained for! But no, you want the AI to waste a gallon of water trying to compute whatever you said and then regurgitate whatever you would find through a simple search anyway.

the popularisation of genAI and the normalisation of using it on the daily has made me realise how much watching a playthrough of Detroid: Become human at the formative age of 12 for a girl I had a crush on has shaped my worldview. "I don't want AI to do the things I enjoy doing so I can focus on my chores, I want AI to do my chores so I can focus on the things I enjoy doing." I don't. Home appliances are enough. No thank you I'm quite fine I'd rather use the good ol' internet. AI is problematic for a lot of sensible reasons and this isn't one of them. But I can't ask the AI to do the things for me. Also please stop trying to make AI sentient while we're at it.

Quillbot introduced a new feature: level of confidence its AI-for-AI supposes something has been generated or touched by the AI.
This feature, as predicted, rolls like the utter shitewheel it certainly is, because of course the AI will mark M-dashes and parenthesis incised into the sentence as at least AI-refined. And no, there would not be a clear guideline for how to use this feature.
By that I mean a clear instruction for how to… *sigh* Text generation is math. A lot of teeth-cracking math, some rigid programming, and all of that is based in linguistics. Neither field is particularly easy to get into and have a solid grasp on, so it should be logical a tool presented as easy-to-use and entirely-comprehensible in regards of all this—so in the form of percentages and now Confidence—*must* include explanations for either category with which it will mark texts.

Every so often I see a post like this which hints at a wider phenomenon I haven't yet been confronted with. I guess no one in my social circles has a job that GenAI can convincingly replace yet, and we're all old and technical enough to be mildly skeptical of AI outside specific use cases. The code gen isn't good enough to get you very far with any really complex task, and it certainly can't design infrastructure or troubleshoot a system problem. Not yet at least. I hope I'm dead by the time we see any real Artificial General Intelligence being hawked by these spiritually bankrupt tech moguls.
the scariest thing about the generative AI thing is how quickly people have accepted it as an indefinite, irrevocable part of their reality. people have genuinely convinced themselves that ChatGPT is the only solution to most tasks - tasks they did with their own brain without any large effort two years ago. like you know damn well all of us used to write emails ourselves why are we pretending like this is an impossible task to do with your own two hands. what's with the fucking. AI revisionism. i feel like i am going insane.

another addition because i saw someone say something in the tags about mathgpt. mathgpt most likely consists of the following components: - image recognition ai to parse an uploaded picture into math symbols and/or generative layer (think chatgpt) to interpret a written question ("what is the integral of...") - A FUCKING CALCULATOR
i cannot stress this enough. what happens in the background is that mathgpt plugs your question into a calculator or slightly more complex equivalent program for e.g. integrals. literally the only thing ai is helping you with is typing the symbols of your equation into a calculator
Didn't reblog that one "wait you guys actually use chatgpt" post but the one reply where someone said they use it to do math is insane to me, we already have an AI that does math for you it's called a calculator and it's been around for decades

Are any other industries and hobbies suffering with people saying "I'm so excited to be back" due to GenAI as much as software engineering is right now?
I don't mean the kudos-chasing people who are "so excited" to be in the community because they're now able to make things that some people will say "wow!" at without looking too hard, and they did it without putting in effort to learn the skills and be competent and grow.
I mean the people who were in a community before and had the skills, but are now "back and more excited than ever" because they can get a machine to do a passable-if-you-don't-look-too-hard job for them.
It's like:
"I'm so excited to get back in to football" puts humanoid robot on "striker" mode then lets it run on the five-aside field
Are there people going:
"I'm so excited to get back into art!" writes a prompt and presses 'submit' presses 'regenerate' Types "more grimdark" and regenerates Types "even more grimdark" and regenerates Types "in the style of John Blanche, but with oil paints instead of ink" and regenerates "Ahhhh, look at my art!"
Or:
