Postcards From the Dusty Mountains
Took the kiddo out yesterday with me when I went a-volunteering because he is getting very tired of not having anything to do. You know it's getting bad when a guy misses school and is tired of being on his computer all day. I'm not being sarcastic either, I'm deeply sympathetic to his plight and I wish he could get back to school and the friends he was making and the brand-new boyfriend he's been taking those first cautious romantic steps with. He already had to live through COVID homeschooling for two years, and now this. Ugh. I have heard rumors that they are hoping to open the schools back up on October 21, which means two more weeks closed, but it could be worse. So many places still don't even have power, much less water.
Anyway, I took him with me and we went down to a food distribution in Swannanoa. They got hit very very hard, and we spent a couple hours helping a Chick-Fil-A volunteer team from Atlanta hand out hot chicken sandwiches and bottled water. In normal days I don't have much to do with Chick-Fil-A because I don't like their politics, but when the matter at hand is giving hot food to people who've lost their homes, you put the politics aside. I just wish the rest of the country was able to do the same, because I am extraordinarily tired of people thinking of North Carolina as a "battleground state" when the battle we are fighting right now is to keep people alive as the weather starts to turn cold and the water lines stay broken.
Today was busy because I actually managed to keep a doctor's appointment I have been waiting a month for, which was quite a pleasant surprise! The doctor's office is in Hendersonville, so the fact that they were open for business and that I was able to get there are both things that I might have doubted a week ago. I also had an appointment with a local HVAC outfit about getting a whole-house standby generator installed so that next time we have a power outage, we can at least power the fridges, the well pump, the dehumidifiers and my CPAP, with maybe some left over for laptop charging. The price he quoted me for everything except the propane tank and line was $11,000, which was not exactly unexpected but still a big ol' yikes. The good news is, his company bought several of the right size generators before the storm so they would have an inventory, so I could theoretically have a generator before winter really sets in. Highly tempting.
In the afternoon, kiddo and I went out to do more helping. If nothing else has become more apparent over this week, it's that we were and continue to be so, so lucky. Of all the teachers at my husband's school, we are the _only_ family who are still in our own home with all our utilities back up. We are the only members of our extended family in the area who have power. We are part of a tiny fraction of households in the region who have potable water coming from our taps. Given all of that, we decided that we were going to take my final paycheck from canvassing and put it into a community that was not lucky at all. Our Lowes got restocked big time this week, so I was able to go in and get a propane tank, a gas can, a huge box of contractor bags, a straight rake, a shovel, and a gas-powered chainsaw with two cans of fuel for it. We also raided our own house and took our own three shovels and straight rake, our garden cart, some very cute hiking boots I bought but hadn't worn yet, eight packs of bath wipes and two of our cell phone power banks and drove the whole thing down to Black Mountain.
Black Mountain is very close to Swannanoa and was also hit extremely hard by the storm. We didn't go around touristing, but even on the main roads we took we could see devastation everywhere. Everywhere the water touched was drenched in toxic mud, which has dried over the past two weeks into an awful choking dust that covers everything. It blows on the wind and rises with every passing car. As we drove I took the opportunity to explain how the search and rescue paint marking system works to Kiddo, because their bright green graffiti was on all the half-destroyed houses we were passing.
There's an outdoor music venue in Black Mountain called Silverados that has been turned into a massive distribution center. Hot meals were being passed out in the front, while the rear was a busy hive of organizing and distributing supplies. We went there and dropped off all our items, where they were carted away into an absolutely teeming hub of supplies and volunteers. We asked if they needed any more help today, but they definitely had enough willing hands. I think my dad will laugh because I finally did get the chainsaw he talked me out of, but then gave it away before it even left the box.
With a little time on our hands, we went back up north and visited our favorite grocery store, the one that sells lightly-expired canned and boxed food at greatly reduced prices. We were very happy to see that they'd come through the storm unscathed except for a lack of internet, and stocked up on more of the seemingly endless supply of Old El Paso meal kits that they sell two for a dollar. Cheaper than buying tortillas and taco seasoning, lol! We also visited the local record store, which opened for regular business hours despite the circumstances as well, and bought a couple of records because we want them to stay in business even though times are tough. It was, overall, an extremely successful outing.
Sometimes the world here in our house feels tantalizingly close to normal, an endless weekend where we are just waiting to go back to school and work. But just driving into town and seeing all the places closed for lack of water is enough to destroy that bubble, and driving thirty minutes in any direction is like stepping into a different world. Marshall, Spruce Pine, Swannanoa, Black Mountain, the River Arts District. Dozens more places that I have not seen and probably couldn't even get to if I tried. I'm very afraid for what is about to happen in Florida, for their sake and for ours. Appalachia has a long history of being forgotten about when bad things are happening. I really hope it doesn't go that way again.

ATLANTA (AP) — A new reactor at a nuclear power plant in Georgia has entered commercial operation, becoming the first new American reactor built from scratch in decades.
Georgia Power Co. announced Monday that Unit 3 at Plant Vogtle, southeast of Augusta, has completed testing and is now sending power to the grid reliably.
At its full output of 1,100 megawatts of electricity, Unit 3 can power 500,000 homes and businesses. Utilities in Georgia, Florida and Alabama are receiving the electricity.
Nuclear power now makes up about 25% of the generation of Georgia Power, the largest unit of Atlanta-based Southern Co.
A fourth reactor is also nearing completion at the site, where two earlier reactors have been generating electricity for decades. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday said radioactive fuel could be loaded into Unit 4, a step expected to take place before the end of September. Unit 4 is scheduled to enter commercial operation by March.
The third and fourth reactors were originally supposed to cost $14 billion, but are now on track to cost their owners $31 billion. That doesn’t include $3.7 billion that original contractor Westinghouse paid to the owners to walk away from the project. That brings total spending to almost $35 billion.
The third and fourth reactors were originally supposed to cost $14 billion, but are now on track to cost their owners $31 billion. That doesn’t include $3.7 billion that original contractor Westinghouse paid to the owners to walk away from the project. That brings total spending to almost $35 billion.
The third reactor was supposed to start generating power in 2016 when construction began in 2009.
Vogtle is important because government officials and some utilities are again looking to nuclear power to alleviate climate change by generating electricity without burning natural gas, coal and oil.
“This project shows just how new nuclear can and will play a critical role in achieving a clean energy future for the United States,” Southern Co. CEO Chris Womack said in a statement. “Bringing this unit safely into service is a credit to the hard work and dedication of our teams at Southern Company and the thousands of additional workers who have helped build that future at this site.”
In Georgia, almost every electric customer will pay for Vogtle. Georgia Power currently owns 45.7% of the reactors. Smaller shares are owned by Oglethorpe Power Corp., which provides electricity to member-owned cooperatives, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and the city of Dalton. Oglethorpe and MEAG plan to sell power to cooperatives and municipal utilities across Georgia, as well in Jacksonville, Florida, and parts of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
Georgia Power’s 2.7 million customers are already paying part of the financing cost and elected public service commissioners have approved a monthly rate increase of $3.78 a month for residential customers as soon as the third unit begins generating power. That could hit bills in August, two months after residential customers saw a $16-a-month increase to pay for higher fuel costs.
Commissioners will decide later who pays for the remainder of the costs of Vogtle, including the fourth reactor.

Tariffs Threaten to Stall New Construction Gains in Home Affordability Nationwide

Key TakeawaysTariffs have increased material costs for construction by up to 9%, directly impacting home affordability.Rising expenses for essential building materials are causing project delays, cancellations, and higher housing prices in cities like Miami.First-time homebuyers are especially affected, as budget overruns and supply shortages limit their options. The Ripple Effect of Tariffs on Housing ProjectsTariffs are hitting American construction like a wrecking ball at the Golden Gate Bridge, pushing material costs up by as much as 9% and slamming new home affordability. Building supplies—from steel beams to rooftop metals—now cost thousands more, sparking delays, project cancellations, and sending housing prices in Miami and beyond through the roof.Homebuilders burn through budgets, while shortages choke the pipeline for first-time buyers. If you want to know who’s next in line for these losses, pay close attention.Tariffs Drive Up Construction Costs and Slow BuildsHow quickly can the ground beneath Times Square—or any booming city center—shift when new tariffs hit construction’s foundation? In early 2025, sweeping U.S. tariffs slammed into steel, aluminum, and lumber, reshaping every phase of construction from steel framing in Midtown skyscrapers to humble plywood in Austin suburbs.A 25% tariff now blankets all imported steel and aluminum, stripping away previous lifelines for builders who relied on Canadian, Mexican, or European suppliers. The new “melted and poured” standards set a chokehold, demanding rigid origin tracing, while general exclusions vanished—leaving nearly no escape route for struggling construction firms and downstream producers.Material costs exploded, with nonresidential materials prices jumping 9% within mere months. Builders now face an average tariff rate of 22%, directly impacting roughly 7% of the imported homebuilding materials and equipment that form the backbone of new construction projects.Developers feel the squeeze as higher steel and aluminum costs—critical for framing beams in the concrete jungles of cities like Chicago—hit project budgets hard. Those cost hikes move fast, pushing up prices for everything from residential rooftops to the glittering facades around the Space Needle.Contract disputes surge as budgets are blown and timelines buckle. Increased regulatory enforcement targets duty evasion and misclassification, fueling market volatility and making supply chains less reliable. The environmental impacts ripple outward as well. Sudden price hikes for key materials force builders to stockpile supplies, intensifying demand and contributing to increased greenhouse gas emissions at ports and warehouses from accelerated shipments and storage.Urban construction sites face new labor shortages as contractors either renegotiate terms, cut overtime, or lay off skilled workers in reaction to slimmer margins—raising the specter of delayed openings for everything from luxury condos in Miami’s Brickell district to affordable housing projects for teachers in Denver. On the residential front, the cost to build a new house has spiked by $6,400 to $9,200 per home. The average homebuilder now anticipates $9,200 in extra expenses per house, threatening the affordability of new listings and tightening builder margins in a market where the median sales price for new single-family homes hovers at $414,500.Real estate investors now contend with stark regional imbalances. States depending on international sources—like Florida, Texas, and California—face the highest price shocks, while cities with robust local supply chains see far less impact.Yet across the country, the dream of affordable new builds is fading. Buyers facing sticker shock in Atlanta’s Midtown or Los Angeles’ Koreatown are turning instead to existing homes, inflating competition and driving up prices there as well.Developers racing to beat tariff hikes deplete supplies even further, intensifying shortages across critical regions.Meanwhile, builders
managing increased regulatory scrutiny and diminished exemption flexibility find traditional partnerships—like those with Canada’s mills or European steel giants—suddenly fraught with risk.Market volatility grows more severe with each delay or contract dispute, leaving construction timelines uncertain and development budgets on edge.Environmental impacts, labor shortages, and mounting costs churn through the real estate economy like a storm rolling over the Golden Gate.As long-term volatility persists, affordability slips further from reach, and pressure mounts—demanding swift, decisive change before the skyline’s next chapter is written in red ink.Birmingham’s housing inventory declined by 22% year-over-year, a stark reminder of the knock-on effects that nationwide material shortages and price shocks have on even the strongest local markets.AssessmentFrom the Gateway Arch to Main Street, you can hear the concern—tariffs are tightening their grip on the housing market, and it’s hitting hard.Construction costs keep rising, making homes less affordable and putting the brakes on new projects.Neighborhoods watch as more empty lots appear, while builders hesitate and investors face the risk of real losses. At the same time, families looking to buy a home are seeing their dreams slip further out of reach. The industry is at a crossroads, and not addressing tariffs could mean lasting consequences. It’s time to speak up and take action—addressing these tariffs is urgent if we want to keep the American dream of homeownership alive for everyone.

Trusted contractors ensure that the job is done right the first time, which saves you money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent repairs or replacements. They also offer warranties on their work, giving you peace of mind that your investment is protected.
Services Offered by Trusted Roofing Contractors 🛠️
Trusted roofing contractors provide a wide range of services to meet the needs of homeowners. Whether you need emergency repairs or a full roof replacement, experienced contractors are equipped to handle various types of roofing projects.
Roof Inspections and Assessments 🔍
Regular roof inspections are vital to identify potential issues before they become major problems. Trusted contractors offer comprehensive roof inspections that check for leaks, wear, and structural damage. These inspections can help homeowners stay proactive, saving money on repairs and extending the life of the roof.
During an inspection, contractors will look for:
Missing or damaged shingles
Cracked tiles or broken roofing materials
Leaks around vents, chimneys, or skylights
Signs of mold or water damage
Improper ventilation or drainage issues
Roof Repairs 🛠️
Roof repairs are often needed when small issues—such as leaks or loose shingles—become more significant problems. Whether caused by storm damage, general wear, or aging, these issues can lead to further structural damage and higher repair costs if not addressed promptly. Trusted roofing contractors specialize in fixing a variety of roofing problems, including:
Leaking roofs: Leaks can develop from broken shingles, cracked tiles, or damaged flashing. Contractors will quickly find and repair the source of the leak, preventing further water damage.
Shingle replacement: Missing or damaged shingles need to be replaced promptly to maintain the roof’s integrity and prevent leaks.
Flashing repairs: Flashing, which seals joints and seams in the roof, can deteriorate over time. Trusted contractors will replace or repair flashing to ensure the roof is watertight.
Roof Replacement and Installations 🏡🔄
When your roof reaches the end of its lifespan or suffers extensive damage, a full replacement may be necessary. Trusted roofing contractors offer expert roof replacement services, helping you choose the right roofing material for your home and budget. Popular roofing materials include:
Asphalt shingles: A cost-effective and durable option for most homes, asphalt shingles are available in various colors and styles.
Metal roofing: Known for its durability and energy efficiency, metal roofing can withstand extreme weather and is available in various styles.
Tile roofing: Common in warmer climates, tile roofing is known for its aesthetic appeal and long lifespan.

Trusted contractors will ensure that the new roof is installed correctly, providing a weather-resistant, energy-efficient, and long-lasting result.

Gutters play a crucial role in directing water off your roof and preventing water damage to your home’s foundation. Trusted roofing contractors often provide gutter installation and maintenance services to ensure that your roof's drainage system is working effectively. Services include:
Gutter cleaning: Regular gutter cleaning helps prevent clogs, which can lead to water damage and roof leaks.
Gutter repair: If your gutters are leaking, sagging, or misaligned, roofing contractors can make the necessary repairs.
Gutter installation: When installing a new roof, contractors can install new gutters to ensure proper water flow and drainage.
Storm Damage Repair 🌀
In areas that experience severe weather, such as hurricanes or heavy storms, roof damage is common. Trusted roofing contractors are experienced in assessing and repairing storm-damaged roofs. They can fix:
Missing shingles or tiles
Water damage and leaks
Structural damage caused by fallen trees or debris
Damage caused by high winds or hail
Emergency roof repairs after a storm can help prevent further damage and keep your home safe from the elements.
How to Find Trusted Roofing Contractors in Your Area 📍
Finding the right roofing contractor is key to ensuring a quality repair or installation. Here are a few tips for choosing a trusted professional for your roofing project:
Check for Licenses and Insurance 📄
A reputable roofing contractor should be licensed and insured. This ensures that they are legally qualified to perform roofing work and that you are protected in case of accidents or damage during the project. Always ask for proof of licensing and insurance before hiring a contractor.
Look for Experience and Reputation 🌟
Experienced roofing contractors have a proven track record of successful projects and satisfied customers. Look for companies that have been in business for several years and ask for references or reviews from past clients. A company with a good reputation is more likely to deliver quality work.
Get Multiple Estimates 💰
It’s always a good idea to get multiple estimates before making a decision. This will help you compare prices, services, and timelines to ensure that you are getting a fair deal. Keep in mind that the cheapest option may not always provide the best quality, so be sure to evaluate the contractor’s experience and reputation as well.
Ask About Warranties 🔒
Trusted roofing contractors often offer warranties on their work and materials. This ensures that you are protected if any issues arise after the project is completed. Be sure to ask about the warranty details before signing any contracts.
Conclusion: Invest in Your Home with Trusted Roofing Contractors 🏡💪
Whether you need roof repairs, replacements, or a new installation, trusted roofing contractors are your best bet for high-quality service and results. Their experience, expertise, and use of quality materials will ensure that your roof is not only functional but also durable and long-lasting. Protect your home, increase its value, and ensure its safety by working with a reliable roofing professional who will deliver the best possible results.

The Importance of Atlanta General Contracting for Your Construction Projects Introduction Atlanta is a thriving metropolitan area known for its booming real estate, expanding infrastructure, and dynamic business environment. Whether you’re a homeowner planning a renovation, a developer constructing a new commercial property, or a business owner expanding your space, the role of general contracting in Atlanta is invaluable. Atlanta General Contracting ensures that construction projects, whether residential or commercial, are executed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all regulations. A general contractor is responsible for overseeing a project from start to finish, managing everything from planning and budgeting to execution and final inspections. Understanding why you’d need or want general contracting services, as well as how they are useful, can help you make informed decisions for your next project. Why You Need or Want Atlanta General Contracting Construction projects, regardless of size, come with a myriad of challenges. From securing permits and sourcing materials to coordinating subcontractors and ensuring deadlines are met, the process requires extensive knowledge, experience, and organization. This is where general contracting in Atlanta becomes essential.
Expertise and Industry Knowledge – General contractors bring years of experience to the table, ensuring that all aspects of a project are handled with precision and professionalism. They are well-versed in Atlanta’s building codes, zoning laws, and regulations, helping to avoid costly mistakes and delays.
Time and Cost Efficiency – Without proper project management, construction timelines can easily extend beyond expectations, leading to budget overruns. A general contractor streamlines the process by effectively scheduling tasks, negotiating with suppliers, and coordinating workers to ensure the project stays on track and within budget.
Risk Management and Safety Compliance – Construction inherently comes with risks, from workplace injuries to structural issues. General contractors ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards, reducing liability and protecting both workers and property owners.
Resource Management and Vendor Relationships – A well-established general contractor has a network of trusted suppliers, subcontractors, and laborers. This means they can procure high-quality materials at competitive prices and secure skilled tradespeople, leading to a higher standard of workmanship. A Tree Fell on My Roof – How to Respond

Avoid panic and despair when a tree falls on your roof. Knowing how to promptly respond to a tree falling on your roof will help you minimize structural damages while restoring a safe and secure home for your loved ones.

New Image Roofing Atlanta gathered crucial information about when a tree falls on your roof, ensuing inspections, recovery and repairs, and who to contact.
Immediate Damages to the Roof and Home
When a tree falls on your roof (shingle or membrane), the damage is immediate and potentially catastrophic. Whether a sloped (shingle) or low-slope roof, a tree impact can lead to severe structural damage, roof collapse, and secondary water, electrical, and gas problems. Consider the following:
Sloped Shingle Roofs

Sloped shingle roofs, often found on residential homes, are more vulnerable to immediate damage when a tree falls on them. A tree impact can cause the following damage:
Roof Penetration – Depending on the tree’s size and weight, it can break through the shingle layers, underlayment, and sheathing, causing a large hole in the roof. This exposes your home to the elements, allowing rainwater, debris, and wind to enter the structure.
Structural Damage – Roof trusses and support beams, designed to hold up the roof, may be severely compromised. A heavy tree could cause the trusses to buckle or collapse entirely, damaging inside the home.
Water Damage – Once a roof is penetrated, rainwater can enter the attic and living spaces. Over time, this can lead to significant water damage, including mold growth, damage to insulation, and rot in the wooden roof and ceiling structures.
Gutter and Drainage Damage – A fallen tree can also damage gutters, downspouts, and the drainage system, causing water to accumulate around the foundation or enter the home through other vulnerabilities.
Low-Slope Roofs
Low-slope roofs, common on commercial buildings or modern homes, can also suffer severe damage from a tree fall. However, the damage may differ slightly from that of sloped roofs:
Membrane Damage – Low-slope roofs typically use a membrane (like TPO, EPDM, or PVC) for waterproofing. A tree impact can puncture or tear the membrane, allowing water to seep into the building.
Pooling Water – Low-slope roofs are more prone to water pooling. If a tree causes a depression or puncture, water may collect, worsening the damage and increasing the leak potential.

Structural Integrity – A large tree may cause a partial or complete collapse of the roof structure, leading to safety concerns for the structure’s occupants and making the roof unsafe for repair crews.
Inspecting Your Home After a Tree Impact
After a tree falls on your home, the first priority is safety. You should evacuate and call emergency services if there is any risk of injury or further damage. Here’s who to contact after the initial incident:
Emergency Services – If the tree has caused structural or physical damage, gas leaks, or electrical hazards, call 911 for immediate assistance.
Tree Removal Services – Contact a licensed tree removal service to safely remove the tree from your roof. Avoid trying to remove it yourself, as the weight and balance of the tree could cause further damage or injury.

Tip: Have the tree removal service tarp the affected area until a roofer can get onsite to evaluate the damage and begin emergency roof repairs or replacement.
Roofer – Hire a licensed roofing contractor to assess and repair the roof. They will check for broken trusses, holes, and water damage that may not be immediately visible.
For a free roof inspection and repair or replacement quote, contact newimageroofingatlanta.com today.
Gas, Water, and Electric Companies – After a tree impact, there is a risk that gas lines, water pipes, or electrical wiring may have been damaged. Contact the respective utility companies to inspect the home and ensure no leaks or fire hazards persist.
General Contractor – Once the roof and utilities are secured, a general contractor can assess any interior damage to walls, ceilings, and floors. They will coordinate necessary repairs to return your home to a livable condition.
Inspection Checklist

Here are areas to thoroughly inspect after a tree falls on your roof:
Water Lines – Check for leaks or ruptures in the plumbing system if the tree has penetrated the roof into the living spaces.
Electrical Lines – Look for exposed wiring, shorts, or electrical fires. If you detect any issues, turn off the electricity at the main breaker and call an electrician.
Tip: If the tree fell through your power lines or the home’s connection, call your electric company to turn off the power until repairs are completed.
Gas Connections – If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, evacuate immediately and call the gas company. A fallen tree could dislodge or break gas lines, leading to dangerous leaks.
Structural Integrity – Beyond the roof itself, inspect support beams, walls, and floors for shifting, cracks, or collapse.
Preventing Tree-Related Damage

While a tree falling on your home can seem like an unpredictable event, there are several steps you can take to prevent or minimize the damage:
Regular Tree Maintenance – One of the best ways to prevent a tree from falling on your home is by regularly maintaining the trees on your property. This includes trimming dead or weak branches, removing diseased trees, and ensuring that large trees are healthy and stable.
Plant Trees Away from Structures – When planting trees, place them far away from your home so (if they were to fall) they can’t reach the roof.
Note: Fast-growing trees can reach dangerous heights quickly, so it’s crucial to plan ahead.
Professional Tree Inspections – Hire a local arborist to inspect the trees on your property, especially if they are old or have suffered damage from storms. A professional can identify early signs of decay, disease, or weakness that may lead to a tree falling.
Find or verify an arborist HERE.
Install Impact-Resistant Roofing Materials – Consider upgrading to impact-resistant roofing materials. These materials, like metal or asphalt shingles with a Class 4 rating, are designed to withstand heavy impacts and may reduce the severity of damage if a tree falls on your home.
Post-Tree Fall Resources for Property Owners
After the tree is removed and your home is secured, you may need to contact several resources to assist in the recovery process:
Insurance Company – File a claim with your homeowner’s insurance provider to cover the costs of repairs and tree removal. Document all damages with photos and maintain receipts for any emergency expenses.
Watch this video for more information about insurance policies and deductibles.
youtube
Property Management – If you rent your home, contact your property manager to coordinate repairs and assessments with contractors.
Power Company – If the tree affected power lines, contact your local utility company to inspect and restore electrical services when it’s safe.
Water Company – If water lines are damaged, the water company can help repair them and ensure no leaks or contamination risks persist.
Gas Company – Ensure that any gas lines or meters affected by the tree impact are inspected and safely restored by your gas provider.
By taking prompt action and working with professionals, you can recover from the damages caused by a fallen tree while preventing further harm to your home.

Elevating Home Value: The Importance of Energy-Efficient Siding Installation in Atlanta and Marietta, GA
For homeowners in areas like Atlanta and Marietta, GA, where the real estate market is competitive and diverse, increasing home value is a key consideration. While various home improvement projects can contribute to this goal, investing in quality siding installation in Atlanta and Marietta, GA, stands out as a game-changer. Beyond its functional role in protecting homes, siding significantly impacts curb appeal and overall value.
Curb Appeal Enhancement
First impressions matter, and the home's exterior is the first thing potential buyers or visitors see. High-quality siding can transform the look of a house, making it visually appealing and inviting. Modern and well-maintained siding catches the eye and signals that the property is cared for and up-to-date. Homes with attractive curb appeal are likelier to attract potential buyers, setting the stage for increased value.
Fresh and Updated Appearance
Investing in quality siding installation allows the homeowner to give one's property a fresh and updated appearance. Outdated or damaged siding can make a property appear neglected, whereas new siding instantly revitalizes its look. The choice of siding material, color, and style plays a pivotal role in aligning the home's aesthetics with current design trends, enhancing its overall appeal to potential buyers.
Increased Market Appeal
In a competitive real estate market like Atlanta and Marietta, having a standout property is crucial. Quality siding installation positions one's home as a desirable option among potential buyers. When multiple properties are available, those with modern and well-maintained exteriors tend to attract more attention and generate greater interest, potentially resulting in higher offers.
Protection and Low Maintenance
Beyond aesthetics, high-quality siding materials offer protection against the elements. Siding acts as a shield, safeguarding the home from rain, wind, and other environmental factors. When potential buyers know that the exterior is well-protected, it instills confidence in the property's overall condition. Additionally, many modern siding materials are designed to be low-maintenance, making them appealing to buyers who want to minimize upkeep costs.
Return on Investment (ROI)
A well-executed siding installation can offer a solid return on investment. While the upfront cost of quality siding installation might seem significant, the increased home value it brings can often exceed the initial expenditure. This is especially true in regions where curb appeal is essential in property valuation and demand.
Perceived Value
The perceived value of a home is closely tied to its visual appeal. When potential buyers see a property with high-quality siding, they're likely to perceive it as a better value compared to homes with older or deteriorating exteriors. This positive perception can translate into higher offers and a quicker selling process.
Impression of Care and Maintenance
Buyers are often concerned about the condition of a home they're considering purchasing. New or well-maintained siding gives the impression that the property has been well cared for. This can alleviate concerns about potential hidden issues and make buyers more comfortable with their decision to invest in the home.
Investing in quality siding installation with the help of a siding contractor in Atlanta and Sandy Springs, GA is a strategic move that goes beyond mere aesthetics. In areas like Atlanta and Marietta, where the real estate market is dynamic and competitive, the impact of siding on home value is substantial. A visually appealing exterior enhances curb appeal, creates a fresh and updated appearance, and conveys a sense of care and maintenance. Moreover, quality siding materials' protection and low-maintenance benefits make a property more enticing to potential buyers. The return on investment in terms of increased home value and potentially higher resale values makes quality siding installation a wise choice for homeowners aiming to elevate the worth of their homes in these vibrant housing markets.

SUBJECT: Racial Disturbance - ADDSCO [left side]
Attached are clippings from the afternoon "Mobile Press".
Today, I have had contacts with the following and have obtained what I believe to be reliable information from them.
Lt. Campbell, Naval Intelligence
Arthur Kearney, ADDSCO
Mr. Craven, " [ditto marks below ADDSCO above]
John Boucher, CIO - ADDSCO Union Rep'v.
J. C. Gates, Mgr., USES, Mobile.
Chas Baumhauer, Commissioner, City of Mobile.
Apparently the disturbance came off when the morning shift went on at 7 o'clock. It is said that the first shift of negro welders went on about 11 o'clock last night and were finishing up their work at 7 this morning. The whiteworkers [sic] began to collect in groups and it is said that they first threatened to strike. Later, according to eye witnesses, they began to throw various pieces of steel, etc., at negroes near the work. One white foreman is said to have been injured when he attempted to make the white men desist. Mr. Craven said it was understood that one of the men hit him with a 2x4 rail and knocked him out, also a cut necessitated surgical treatment with a number of stitches for the wound.
One of the negroes who saw the trouble came up and [sic] here and said about five negroes were injured. This seemed to be so, but I was told later that none of the injuries were very serious. Large numbers of both white and negro workers left the yard and came back to the city. A group of about 2 hundred negroes went first to the union headquarters and then were persuaded to go home until better order was secured. The negro who came up to see me said his foreman urged his crew of laborers to leave the yard until order was restored and safety for them assured.
So far as can be ascertained this evening, no further trouble has developed at the yard. However, instructions have been issued for women and children to remain off the streets and for citizens to be conservative in their talk, being careful not to stir up any further racial feeling.

SUBJECT: [blank]
It seems that the better element at the yard took no part in the demonstration this morning, and I heard from Hugh Cornelius, General Superintendent for Doullut & Ewin, General Contractors, who have an office near where the trouble began, that he felt that the attack on the negroes was without any justification whatever and the action of a bunch of hoodlums.
It is hoped that the Management of ADDSCO will restore order and that the Yard will resume operations tomorrow morning.
The United States Employment Service has been cautioned to be particularly careful in handling releases during the next few days so that as little disruption of labor market conditions will result from this unfortunate incident as may be.
Dr. Morley will return to the office tomorrow morning and will, no doubt, keep you advised of any developments.

How do you redo a small bathroom?
Many homeowners think that renovating a small bathroom is easier than redoing a large bathroom. What they forget is all bathrooms, regardless of their size, have the same elements. Bathroom remodeling projects in Atlanta that involve redoing small bathrooms are highly challenging as the remodeling contractor in Atlanta has to work with limited space. Below are a few tips that you can follow to bring your small bathroom to life.
1. Opt for a Corner Sink
When working with limited space, many general contractors in Atlanta GA install sinks in the corner. The arrangement helps save space. Sinks that can be wall mounted easily are preferred over pedestal sinks. If you are concerned about leaving the space under the sink unoccupied, place a trash can there.
2. Use Large-scale Patterns
Large scale design patterns such as large squares and wide stripes can make a small space seem bigger. Choose a color pattern that blends seamlessly with the background, creating a natural look.
3. Use Shower Curtains
Try using a shower curtain or a shower sliding door with wheels over doors that pivot on hinges. Not only do sliding doors and curtains consume less space but are also easy to operate, helping you save time and effort.
4. Consider a Wall-mounted Faucet
A wall-mounted faucet not only helps save vanity space but is also easier to clean. Many remodeling contractors in Atlanta prefer using these kinds of faucets over their deck-mounted counterparts because of their clean look.
5. Use a Large Mirror
When remodeling a small bathroom, your goal should be to do more with limited space. Installing a large mirror that occupies the entire wall behind the sink helps you exactly do that. A large mirror can be used by two people simultaneously, helping save time.
Follow these space-saving tips when redoing a small bathroom. At 1st Choice Remodel ATL, we have extensive experience of handling bathroom remodeling projects in Atlanta. No matter the scope or nature of your project, you can count on us to deliver. For more information, call at 678.640.2272, or fill out our contact form.

Leaked e-mails between the Lugar Center, the Pentagon biolaboratory in Tbilisi, the US Embassy to Georgia and the Georgian Ministry of Health reveal new information about the [$161 million][4] secretive US Government biological research program in this former Soviet country.
[4]: <https://govtribe.com/award/federal-contract-award/delivery-order-hdtra108d0008-0002>
The data allegedly originating from the Ministry of Health of Georgia has been published anonymously on Twitter and on a forum for database leaks – Raidforums. Among the documents there are internal memos, official letters and detailed information about US government projects at the Lugar Center, funding and foreign business trips.
Arms Watch volunteers have analyzed the leaked data and discovered very interesting facts about the Center’s recent activities.
The Pentagon has planned to turn Georgia into its largest biological research center overseas, combining its military resources with the resources of the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Georgia.
Furthermore, the number of US projects and grants have increased as well as the number of US scientists deployed to the Lugar Center. The Pentagon-funded facility is planned to temporarily accommodate 16 CDC specialists from Atlanta, for whom Georgia will build a separate BSL-2 laboratory, administrative building and a campus near the Lugar Center. In addition, Georgia will become a regional CDC hub for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, internal documents reveal.
The Lugar Center already sparked controversy about possible dual-use research in 2018 when [leaked documents][5] revealed that US diplomats in Georgia were involved in the trafficking of frozen human blood and pathogens for a secret military program.
[5]: <http://dilyana.bg/us-diplomats-involved-in-trafficking-of-human-blood-and-pathogens-for-secret-military-program/>
The Lugar Center is just one of the many [Pentagon biolaboratories in 25 countries][6] across the world. They are funded by the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) under a [$ 2.1 billion military program – Cooperative Biological Engagement Program (CBEP)][7], and are located in former Soviet Union countries such as Georgia (the motherland of former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin) and Ukraine, the Middle East, South East Asia and Africa.

In 2017 the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) launched a [$6.5 million project on bats and coronaviruses][11] in Western Asia (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Jordan) with the Lugar Center being the local laboratory for this genetic research. The duration of the program is 5 years and has been implemented by the non-profit [US organisation Eco Health Alliance.][12]
[11]: <https://www.usaspending.gov/#/award/ASST_NON_HDTRA11710064_9761> [12]: <https://www.wabnet.org/research/coronavirus-project/>
The project’s objectives are: 1. Capture and non-lethally sample 5,000 bats in 5-year period (2017-2022) 2. Collect 20,000 samples (i.e. oral, rectal swabs and/or feces, and blood) and screen for coronaviruses using consensus PCR at regional labs in Georgia and Jordan. According to [the project presentation][13], Eco Health Alliance already sampled 270 bats of 9 species in three Western Asian countries: 90 individual bats in Turkey (Aug 2018), Georgia (Sept 2018), and Jordan (Oct 2018).

Coincidentally, the same Pentagon contractor tasked with the US DoD bat-research program – Eco Health Alliance, USA, also collected bats and isolated coronaviruses along with Chinese scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. EcoHealth Alliance received a [$3.7 million grant][15] from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) to collect and study coronaviruses in bats in China from 2014 to 2019.

**Project 1911:** **Ricketsia and Coxelia infection surveillance in Georgia and Azerbaijan** (US federal grant [HDTRA1-19-1-0042][16] awarded to NCDC-Georgia)
[16]: <https://govtribe.com/award/federal-grant-award/project-grant-hdtra11910042>
Duration: 23/09/2019 – 22/09/2022
Funding: $945,000
Despite the official claims of Georgia and USA that the Lugar Center is under the full control of the government of this Caucasus country internal documents show otherwise. Not only has the Pentagon funded biological research projects but it has also paid all the expenses for security and maintenance including utility bills – water, gas, electricity, and cleaning. Tasked with the operational and scientific support to the Lugar Center is USAMRU-Georgia, a special unit deployed to Georgia by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). WRAIR has paid: $524,625 (2016-2018), $650,000 (2017-2019) and $1,062,400 (2017-2021) for utility bills, and a further $158,050 (2016-2017) and $322,000 (2018-2021) for security guards.
The Pentagon has also awarded a private US contractor, Technology Management Company (TMC) an [$8 million contract][17] for science services to support USAMRU-Georgia in the Lugar Center (2016-2021).

**Tularemia research on soldiers**
The Pentagon unit USAMRU-Georgia has conducted extensive research on tularemia involving Georgian soldiers, [scientific papers][18] reveal.
[18]: <https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6453017/>
Tularemia is a rare infectious disease that typically attacks the skin, eyes, lymph nodes and lungs. Tularemia, also called rabbit fever or deer fly fever, is caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. It _is categorized as_[a category A bioterrorism agent][19]. Tularemia was weaponized for mass aerosol dissemination by the US Army in the past, according to a recently declassified military report.

900 volunteers (soldiers and civilians) were recruited for the [DTRA project GG-19][25] “Epidemiology and Ecology of Tularemia in Georgia” from 2014 to 2017. Blood samples were collected from those volunteers and tested for tularemia.

According to the study, 10 soldiers (2%) of the 500 solders tested had antibodies for F. tularensis. The seropositive soldiers were men, the majority of whom were between 30 and 39 years of age. Seven cases had current residences in known endemic areas (i.e. Kakheti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Kvemo Kartli, Shida Kartli, and Tbilisi). Three were from areas without previously known F. tularensis transmission (i.e. Imereti).
Of the 783 residents approached to participate in this study, 35 (5.0%) volunteers had antibodies to _F. tularensis_.
While the civilian volunteers were all residents of two areas with naturally occurring foci of tularemia in Georgia, the military personnel were soldiers visiting Georgia’s military hospital. The study does not provide any explanation as to why soldiers were enrolled in this project nor how exactly they contracted the disease in the army.

Furthermore, Georgia has asked the US Embassy for assistance for the construction of a second military hospital in the country, according to leaked correspondence between local health officials and the US Embassy to Tbilisi.

**CDC regional hub**
The US Government has launched a parallel civil program in Georgia implemented by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Leaked e-mails between the US Embassy to Tbilisi and Georgian health officials reveal that CDC has planned to set up a regional office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Georgia. The US Embassy and CDC have requested additional office space for 16 employees. Currently the CDC staff are working inside the Lugar Center.

Interestingly, the Georgian health officials do not ask about any further information or clarification as to what this new foreign hub is going to do in their own country. Instead, Georgia’s Ministry of Health has planned the construction of a new BSL-2 laboratory, conference hall and campus near the Lugar Center with a loan from the European Investment Bank, according to a letter to the finance minister of Georgia leaked on Raidforums.

In conclusion, the United States has been consistently developing its laboratory facilities in the Caucasus. Why has the US Government spent billions of dollars on such biolaboratories and projects abroad instead on the health of its own citizens?
Scientists with diplomatic immunity
Furthermore, why have [US scientists working at the Lugar Center been given diplomatic status and immunity][40] to research deadly pathogens and insects in Georgia? Diplomatic immunity is a principle of international law by which foreign government officials are not subject to the jurisdiction of local courts and other authorities for their activities. Hence, US scientists could even perform illegal experiments in Georgia without being prosecuted as they have diplomatic immunity.
