One of the great military fiascos of American history, The Battle of the Little Bighorn, took place on this date in 1876. There were no photojournalists present, to be certain, but we do have pictographs by one of the Lakota participants in the battle, Red Horse. It’s difficult to really see very much, and well-nigh impossible for a non-expert to interpret more than a fraction of what is being depicted. But as the only visual record of the event by an eyewitness, these are of historical value, if nothing else.

Johnny Bart crosses paths with another real life figure from the Old West, General Custer (George Armstrong Custer, 1839-1876), in both Rawhide Kid No. 60, dated October 1967, and Rawhide Kid No. 91, dated September 1971. Covers on both by Dick Ayers. The events in the earlier story seems to have slipped past the editorial team though as there is no indication either party met before in the later issue.

Did Buffalo Bill invent the Wild West?
Buffalo Bill is often accused of having invented a fake Wild West in his shows but TV historian Tony McMahon begs to differ
You’ve heard of Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, Chief Sitting Bull, and of course – Buffalo Bill. Those great heroes of the Wild West who created the United States of America. Frontier folk laughing in the face of danger. Battling the fearsome Sioux and Cheyenne. Free spirits living by their own code of honour at the expanding new frontiers of America. A tough life punctuated by gunfights and…

Oh and Ronald Reagan.
