As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#“an object created and controlled by companies” anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a “tool”#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is “automation” you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always “well i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on you”#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

“don’t blame peoples’ individual choices of using ai for climate change, blame the big corporations!!”
i’m gonna hold your hand when i say this. generative ai is the big corporation, and this product only continues to exist because of peoples’ individual choices to use it

i hate that a.i is seriously sweeping the nation in every way. chat.gpt was already bad enough but the whole studio ghi.bli a.i art generation?? blatant disregard for miy.azaki's philosophy and now these bozos online are marketing it.
that dude who tried to (stu.dio g.hibli) a.i generate some poor trans woman and when she said she's anti-a.i he suddenly generates pregnant (wtf ??? of all things help) art of her in retaliation. are you a child???

Not to get canceled or anything but in order to like. Rebel against AI we need to recognize the difference between normal AI and generative AI
Normal AI = good, helps you (most of the time), things like autocorrect, spell checker, most of the games you play use AI, etc
Generative AI = Bad, steals from real people, harms the environment, lets people get away with not knowing every day real world skills, things like Chat GTP, Character.ai, any AI art generator, etc

I'm trying to say this nicely... but we know AI is environmentally harmful, we know its use of slave labor in its maintenance, we know it's being used by corporations to avoid paying for labor AND to undercut the labor they can't avoid employing... so we know it's bad on pretty much... every conceivable level
We also know it's biggest advocates and the people running most AI companies... are in fact literal, actual fascists. Some of which have actual body counts. Like have literally caused the suffering and deaths of other human beings
So... what exactly is the point of posts mocking the "less good" reasons to criticize generative AI use? Even when you're ideologically correct that the argument they're employing is flawed and that there are better, more tangible criticisms of generative AI (see... the fascism... slave labor... environmental harm), what is the actual point? What is accomplished besides generative AI use being defended and expanded for another day?
"It's fascist to criticize generative AI use as soulless." Okay well, sure, I guess, let's go with that. ACTUAL fascists with the power to do the fascism are using this AI and are financially benefiting from generative ai use. And are using things like deepfakes to create propaganda that will ultimately hurt more people... so... no fascist is getting into power by criticizing generative AI but plenty are using generative AI to amass power.
Thusly... you were morally correct in your observation. And yet what did you accomplish? Who did you aid?
I see so many fucking posts that are like... okay, so you're smug right now. What is your smugness doing to help other people? To prevent harm?
"Haha it's stupid to be offended for Miyazaki's sake because he has bad politics too." Correct. And yet the Ghibli art image generation trend forced OpenAI to limit image generation because it's using so much energy and creating so much heat it was melting GPUs.
I'm not sad for the GPUs sake or for Ghibli's sake... I'm thinking critically, for like, five seconds, about what that means for water usage and the environment.
If the "bad" arguments shame people into not using a harmful technology... I'm sorry at a certain point, maybe I just sit down and let them continue to make the bad arguments. Because the harm of "UWU MIYAZAKI" is... people continue to watch Ghibli films (which is what y'all are doing too, like, EVERY post I have EVER seen criticize him here always has the addendum "I still love his some of films tho" lol) and the harm of generative ai use is pollution which will mostly affect the most marginalized and vulnerable people. Like... we already know climate change hurts vulnerable people the most and yet...
I'm just kinda tired of rhetoric/ideology over tangible results, I guess.

I’ve spoken positively about National Novel Writing Month before and so I am sad to have to take it all back.
If you’re not aware, NaNoWriMo recently endorsed the use of generative AI in writing practices, and their statement even went as far as to say that anti-AI views are “classist” and and “ableist”.
There is no ethical use for generative AI, as we speak. Using AI, even for something as simple as rephrasing an email or generating a profile picture, means that you’re actively using thousands of stolen works, a lot of which are copyrighted and/or protected in some way. (That’s why most companies behind generative AI’s are currently facing multiple lawsuits from various artists and companies who’ve found their work was used to train the AI models without their consent and without promise of compensation)
I’m an artist. I’m a writer. I cannot in any way endorse generative AI as long as it’s built on stolen artwork by my fellow artists, and possibly even myself. There is no world in which using generative AI makes you an artist. Currently, it just makes you complacent in art theft at worst and lazy at best.
It’s not classist to say that, and it’s not ableist either. Lot’s of writers and artists have physical or mental disabilities and/or come from a middle-to-low-class background. Your financial standing, and whether or not you’re disabled, does not define your ability to create art, as so many incredible artists throughout history have proven by continuing to make art on their own terms. I used to say that there’s no wrong way to make art. I was wrong. Generative AI proved me wrong.
The statement specifically emphasized AI as a way to get proofreading and editing done without needing to pay for a professional editor. But beta-readers have always existed for this very reason; it’s just another human connection AI seeks to eliminate in the name of “efficiency”.
There are books on editing that can be found and read in libraries, if you don’t have money to buy them. There are articles and videos made by actual experts in their field that can be found for free. I trust them far more than whatever botched mosaic of words AI spits out, which might not even be remotely correct, as most AI models openly allow errors.
So, my point is: Don’t use NaNoWriMo.
There are other ways to track your progress. There are other places to find community and writing groups. There are far better ways of creating art that won’t compromise the ethics of being an artist and, most likely, the law.
It sucks that I have to say this. It sucks that NaNoWriMo apparently has had a nosedive in it’s quality and moral standings that was steep enough that nearly all their employees quit.
But that’s where we are now, apparently. And so that’s where I stand.
That’s all.

…just got an ad for some AI thing that will literally WRITE YOU A WHOLE BOOK.
WHAT THE FUCK?! What happened to writing shit yourself?!
Apparently, all it takes to write a book now is to just put in a prompt on some stupid website.
Like… no. No. The fuck do you mean people would actually, seriously consider letting an AI write some stupid book for them??
