Sofa Composit Shot

I began my second last tracking shot with the usual node tree set up in Nuke. The GeoCube seems to track nicely when played back so I am happy for this to move on to Maya.

After inserted the cube and image planes into Maya, I constructed a shape for the sofa as a shadow matte as well as importing the Changeling and adjusting its size to the scene.

Once I was happy with the placement it was time to begin animating the rig. I want this scene to show the Changeling trying to learn how to sit on the sofa in what it thinks is a human way.

I realised I should have made knee joints for the rig however it is too late now to go back and fix this so I'm going to have to only have it sit with its knees up when it's facing towards the camera and not side on.

I had to change the shape of the sofa so that it caught certain shadows but this meant the shadow matte turned up strangely in Nuke. I intended to rotoscope to fix this as hopefully that will work.

Any rotoscoping I tried didn't work the way I wanted it to, so I have hidden the sofa model in Maya completely and instead put a flat plane in and rendered this to see if will will look the same and not need rotoscoping in the same way.

This seems to have worked for the most part, the shadows just need some colour correcting.

The shadows under the foot became an issue with this approach, so I had to go back to Maya, adjust some of the key frames of the model as well as bring the plane shadow matte as close to the model as I could.

Maya Motion Tracking

This is the first part of the motion tracking tutorial for this exercise with Gary however the videos differ slightly to what we did in class.

The first part of the process is importing your footage to Nuke and adding a sharpen node to up the contrast which helps out Nuke's motion tracking process which operates by picking out high contrast points to map throughout the video. Then add the camera tracking node and allow Nuke to map the points, select those on the floor plane so Nuke understands which points are on the same level. Follow along the video and build the rest of the node tree most of which comes from the GeoScene and the GeoCube is the marker we use when in Maya to understand where the object would be in relation to the camera.

I will recap this process with some of my own footage to solidify my understanding of 3D motion tracking.

Nuke Tutorial 2 Part 1 - Tracking a video

We used a video of a coffee table in this second nuke tutorial, beginning with inserting a Sharpen and Camera Tracker node. After this, I edited the number of features to 800 to increase the number of points to track against in the video.

Pressing 'Track' under the Camera Tracker tab began the process of tracking the points in the video.

Selecting Solve after this showed which points were good to track by highlighting them green and those which were bad in red. This was followed by deleting the unsolved and rejected points to leave only the green ones behind in the video.

Once this was done, I then had to create Scene+ under Camera Tracker to create these nodes.

Hovering over the viewer and video, clicking the tab key brought the viewer into a 3D mode. The 3D mode could not recognise the floor as the floor so I had to go back into the viewer as it was before and select the points on the floor at various frames using the Shift + Lasso tool. I then right clicked on one of the floor points and chose ground place>set to selected. The viewer1 had to then be connected to the bottom of the tree instead of the first camera tracker.

After, I searched for the GeoCube node and connected this to the GeoScene in the tree, moving it around in the 3D view to position it to sit on top of the coffee table and scaling it down.

I could then hide the sharpen and first camera tracker nodes using the D key and clicking on them. Pressing play to see if the object tracked well or not, it seems to be alright.

I created a flat plane using the GeoCard node and changing the rotate x value to 90 under the Transform tab so that it lay flat. The GeoCard node had to be connected o the GeoScene1 node.

Nuke tutorial- tracking

First go at tracking a video in Nuke. Started by adding in Sharpen and 3D camera. Set the number of features to 800.

Camera track-track-solve. Similar to what we did in Aftereffects, video gets tracked and you can see where it worked. Solve- delete unsolved removes the red areas where the video didn't track well.

Lasso tool- select the areas on the floor. Cameratracker-scene+-create

Add in a Geocube and position into place in the scene.

So far the tracking process seems straightforward enough. There are quite a few sets but done correctly it isn't too difficult. I think it will definitely help to start noting done the process, so i don't forgot how it is done.
