Up North Trip

March - July 2024

As usual I was planning my next geo-trip. I ordered a Bluetti power station to use for my CPAP while Jeep camping. Corny wired it right to the car battery to charge while driving. I cut a 4" upholstery foam to fit the Jeep and zipped it inside one of my sleeping bags. I left for a few days with Corny's folding bike. At my first stop, I bought a Florida Annual State Park pass. I cached around Ocala and Lake City. I found many of the oldest geocaches in several counties. The Bluetti worked like a charm - it will last me 3 nights without a charge. I have since discovered it will be fully topped up within a few hours of driving.

I got back home and we had a new carwash open right next to our Taco Bell. We took advantage of the free vacuums and floor mat washer.

One of our builder's son-in-laws is building a house across the street from us. The day they were pouring the foundation, someone's husky got loose and went for a romp in the cement pond. He stuck his snout right into the cement! The guys chased him away and he came over to our yard to stretch out on his newly cemented belly. It is a bit bigger than our house and a lot more expensive. They had an issue with the back yard (a giant pit), so they fenced it in. Now the problem isn't visible unless you peek over to the neighbor's side of the fence.

We hit a great storage auction in Clearwater at an A/C facility. We got a nice clean fridge for Shorty, a rattan guest bedroom set for us, a phone for Corny and a floor lamp for me, among many smaller finds.

We were getting ready to take the fridge up to Shorty, so I packed my kitchen bin with my pepper grinder, spices, garlic chopper, stuff like that. We decided to leave the CrockPot at Shorty's house this time so we don't have to pack it every trip. Corny replaced it soon after I got home and I regained my will to live/cook again. I was stuck on refried bean nachos for a week or so.

I finished making some pillows for my sister to match her pretty blue/yellow flower napghan. We gave them to her on her birthday.

I left home March 28th and finished geocaching in all the GA counties. I skipped out on any Easter dinner and ate at a Panda south of Atlanta. I visited the Atlanta capitol around 7am. There was plenty of parking and a ton of cops around at that hour. I started the Tennessee State Star with the bike. The weather didn't cooperate - it was a cold, grey drizzly day. I bought some leather gloves but it was still too cold for bike riding. I'll have to catch the Star some other time. I took a library day and headed north to Kentucky. I put on two pairs of pants in the morning but it was so cold I never took off the outers. It was such a pretty drive in the country. In southeast Ohio I ran into some flooded roads.

I'm pretty sure I passed the Serpent Mound. As I drove by I thought "Why in the world would a farmer want his field like that? WTH was he growing?" Later I saw a brochure at a rest area and what I saw looked just like it!

I met Corny at a rest area off of I-71. We continued to Caesar Creek State Park campground for two nights. We watched the eclipse at a Wapakoneta Wally's. None of my pictures turned out.

We got to Shorty's house April 9th. He was putting the finishing touches on a freshly remodeled bedroom with a new queen size mattress. That was my bedroom for the length of my stay! He treats me so well . . .

We were meeting Shorty at the Taco Bell next to his workplace whenever possible. We frequented Wally's, Sam's and Martin's for groceries to cook for Shorty. Our feeble selves helped put together some of his new IKEA furniture.

We ate at Franky's Tacos, Cane's, Fazoli's and of course Allie's. On one of Shorty's days off, we all checked out the Potowatamie Zoo (just blocks from his house).

I discovered a China Tree clearance/glitch: one cent Spring Mix Dots. I went back to the store several times and accumulated about 20 boxes.

In April I had an enlightening phone call with my brother. Now I know why my sister and mother have treated me like shit for the last 5-10 years.

My Dad and brother made their first visit to Shorty's house and got an informative tour. We had an awesome meal at Longhorn and warm cookies for dessert at Insomnia cookies in South Bend.

4/24 Corny and I worked in the barn, loading a 6x8' U-Haul with our junque. We treated R & A to Salvatori's Italian for letting us store our crap in their barn for 10 years. We didn't get it all this trip, but the better portion of it. Raccoons had tunneled through some of Corny's boxes, so they will have to be repackaged next time we get up there. We didn't have time to work on repacking as the U-Haul had to be returned to Florida in four days. It was too hot to work in the garage by the time I got home to Florida, so my treasures await . . .

Corny didn't want Bruno's pizza because it IS pretty expensive, but dang. I ordered some for Shorty and me a couple days after Corny left! We finished watching "Fallout" and started on "Colony".

I went to the Vera Bradley outlet sale at the Coliseum and bought a few things. I escaped spending just around $50 for three items.

I was in the process of getting ready for a Michigan county run when a distant relative died. I postponed leaving for home and didn't get back until May 31. I was up north for 2 months. Corny had just gotten home and unloaded the U-Haul when he heard about the funeral. He and Poco came back up north in the van. I went to the viewing but stepped out for the funeral.

We stayed in the van at Dad's house a few nights and helped as much as we were allowed. I made Mexican lasagne, buttermilk brownies, and chicken noodle soup. We left earlier than expected due to some drama.

Whenever we went out with my brother, an activity was required in addition to the meal. One visit we went to a Chinese buffet, Costco and Franke Park.

May 16, We all left Shorty's house. Corny and Poco headed south in the van and I headed north to Michigan in the Jeep for a week. I slept in the Jeep except one night at a hotel in Saginaw. I cached in every county up to and in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) and most of the way back. My favorite parts were on Jeep trails to old abandoned mines. I explored the old Ford village and dipped into Wisconsin for a few counties. I stopped at several garage sales for swag. The bugs were amazing. Before even getting out of the Jeep, I had my own personal swarms of black flies and mosquitoes, attracted by the engine heat/sound. I got to see an amazing tick parade when I undressed at a McDonald's restroom one day. A great trip, but I didn't finish all the Michigan counties. I will have to come back with the folding bike because the MI State Star is along a bike path near Lansing.

We made one more trip to go see Dad; we ate at a mexican place in Huntington - Chava's, and watched the acrobatic swifts eating bugs midair at Roush Dam. We spent over an hour at a Wally's. Shorty found some $70 boots on clearance (his size!!!) for $17! God is Godd. I found an $87 icemaker. My life has changed! I haven't had a decent cold drink of kool-aid since Oldsmar (2012).

I missed a few Survivor episodes due to my travels but one day soon I will re-watch them all. I geocached my way home via Alabama.

When I got home I downloaded my geocaches and a few days later, I couldn't find my GPS. I went back through all my travel stuff, geocaching stuff and Jeep. I thought I must've left it at a restaurant or it fell out of the Jeep or something. It was so near my birthday, Corny got me a new identical one. Two days later I found the old one, hidden deep in a corner of my big fanny pack. Oof. Well now I have two spares :0)

I planted two packs of tomato seeds June 3: Roma bush and Beefsteak vine. A couple days after I left them out overnight, somebody started eating holes in the leaves. I started spraying them with dish soap/water and bringing them in at night. We shall see if they survive. (edit: they didn't)

My favorite movies since getting back home are Quiet Place, Furiosa, Watchers, and Kingdom of Planet Apes.

We went to Texas Roadhouse on our 1st Anniversary and to a movie and Carrabbas on my birthday.

Look at where the gate put us out at in Toronto! We have a six-ish hour layover

We waited forever to get into lounge #2 of the day. Everyone is fighting with the staff because the wait is too long. We stayed quiet and they showed us to our seats.

Logged a couple of travel bugs at a geocache, and now a long wait at the gate. But check out the waiting area!

08-05-23- In the afternoon we rented bikes and road the entire loop of Central Park, close to 7 miles. The boys even logged a geocache and picked up a travel bug to bring home with us. After a quick pit stop back at the hotel, we headed back out and saw Wicked on Broadway!

28.7.19 - Caostal walk in Wallarah NP

Claire (3ferrets) & I went for a walk in Wallarah NP today which is about 6kms from home. Gorgeous day, perfect weather for a walk and some geocaching. Started by parking at the entry point on Caves Beach. Walked along the old Pacific Highway for a bit the turned off and headed towards the water. Managed to find a super steep decent which we had a giggle about not falling over. Made it down without incident and then continued on to the coast. Gorgeous views of the beautiful blue water today.

All up found about 10 geocaches and picked up a travel bug to move on.

Another great day out exploring the local area!

I know it was probably ages ago you last posted about it but I want to thank you for inspiring me to start geocaching!

It might have been a while since I last posted about it but it’s a regular hobby for me! We’ve actually been out geocaching the last couple of days to try to get the souvenir for the Streak Week challenge running right now (the one we nabbed today was a Travel Bug Hotel in a local library!)

And I always love hearing I’ve inspired people to explore hobbies they enjoy. It’s such a wonderful thing knowing I’ve had a part in helping people have fun in their daily lives. That’s like, one of my biggest goals as a person! So I’m glad you’ve been having fun with caching, it’s one of my favorite hobbies and one that I super love introducing people to.

You absolutely still need a lifejacket, since you could get knocked out or panic or otherwise be unable to morph before you drown. That's why even accomplished swimmers need one. United Airlines cannot force you to morph something small, because that would infringe on bodily rights that I am certain would be a heck of a lot stronger after all the yeerk buisiness. Also because the insurance the airline would have to pay just in case a single passenger demorphed and crushed everyone would be insane. The Great American Roadtrip would be greatly facilitated by having people (friends? paid people? tourguides? pre-paid hotels?) stationed regularly along the way. You would probably also want a series of brightly (UV?) coloured circles on the ground, each roughly half an hour to 45 mins from eachother; preferably stocked with water and snacks and camping equipment, for people to stop and de-morph at. You want 30-45 minutes at the most so that if someone doesn't notice one and is late to the next they are not automatically trapped. You try to hit every one, with the snack as incentive; maybe a geocache or a photobooth or something to commemorate the trip and encourage the people not into snacks. Even with all the precautions there will still be a great many people lost and never found again. By predation, the elements, hunting, accidents, getting lost... Dunno how the numbers fare against car accidents though! Especially since now people can morph those consequences away, skewing risk tolerance even further than habituation does. I think more than a pilot's license the bigger problem is now going to be immigration and travel. Lack of passport and other laws against crossing will stop precisely no one when they can cross a border at any point with just 5 minutes of prep. I would say that quarantines would be impossible and epidemics would flourish, if morphing wasn't so likely to render many diseases moot. Well, unless the bugs are counted to the morph tech as gut flora and the like, just like the yeerks are. Then we have a problem.

Do you think the FAA would require Tobias or anybody else who morphed into a bird to get a pilot's license after the war? How would they keep random bird morphers away from restricted airspaces? What about even smaller flying creatures, like wasps and butterflies and spiders? Do you need a pilot's license to be a spider? What about creatures that only fly in limited circumstances, such as pigs? Do you need a pilot's license to morph into a pig? I have so many questions. Tangentally related to that, what about roadtrips? Could morphing enable people to take the Great American Roadtrip without needing a car? Could you just morph into a goose and carry like, a small wallet or purse with money for when you need to make purchases, and stop at rest stops along the way for demorphing and snack breaks? Actually, that sounds pretty awesome, cause then you could get better vantage points on the various landmarks you would pass and have better freedom to detour and check them out if you wanted to. But how would you take photos? Your payload would have to be ridiculously light to make it cross country - no more than a few pounds, tops. We're talking Ultra-Ultralight Backpacking levels of gear here. I don't think the average person is ready for that kind of experience. I suppose you could carry more if you were using a crosscountry quadruped morph, like a big deer or a mountain lion, or maybe a horse, but you'd be so slow, and you'd be more at risk of getting into trouble with other people. Nobody ever shoots a goose for crossing property lines, but ground animals do get shot at. Maybe you could add a vest to your animal morphs, the same way Ax's human morph has clothes, so that people know you are a person. Tangentally related to the impact of morphing on trips, could United Airlines force passengers to morph into small creatures for short flights so they can fit more passengers onto a plane? Would they even be allowed to do that? If you got stuck in morph because of United Airlines, could you sue? Would being able to morph an aquatic creature appropriate to the body of water you are boating in qualify as a substitute for a life jacket, or would you still need a lifejacket just in case? What if your aquatic morph is an invasive species, do invasive species laws apply?

19. September 2022

Zweiter Tag in Seattle.

Wir fahren morgens mit der Linie 1 bis zur University of Washington und schlendern durch das Universitätsgelände. Beeindruckende Gebäude und gepflegte Gartenanlagen überraschen uns während des Besuchs. Entlang des Lake Union spazieren wir zum Gas Works Park, bekannt für den besten Blick auf die Stadt.

Weiter bis nach Fremont, wo wir das Headquarter von Geocaching besuchen und ein paar spannende Einblicke in das Hobby erhalten (unter anderem sehen wir den Travel Bug, welcher einige Zeit im Weltall verbracht hat).

Zu Fuss spazieren wir wieder Richtung Süden alles entlang des Lake Union, entlang vieler Marinas und Bootshaus-Docks. Die Bootshäuser erinnern mich sehr an den Film ‚Sleepless in Seattle‘. 😊

In South Lake Union, am südlichen Ende des Sees, beobachten wir noch die vielen Wasserflugzeuge, die hier landen und starten. Bei Duke‘s Seafood Restaurant essen wir Clam Chowder (dazu gibt es sogar ein Rezept), Fish Taco‘s und leckeren Lachs.

Mit dem Bus 70 fahren wir wieder zurück nach Downtown und somit zurück ins Hotel.

WEEK 3

Geocaching

Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunting game. Players use GPS coordinates either used on a handheld GPS device such as a garmin or a mobile app plus other navigational techniques to hide and seek out containers called “geocaches/caches” , Caches contain a logbook where players sign their codename and the date to prove the cache was found. After signing the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it.

Bigger cache containers sometimes contain take-one-leave-one toys/trinkets and rarer travel bugs. Travel bugs are objects (usually coins, keychains or patches) with serial numbers printed on them that become a hitchhiker that is carried from cache to cache (or person to person) in the real world and you can follow its progress online. The owner of the bug can set up a goal or task for the bug such as reaching a specific country.

Geocaching has a relatively low barrier of entry and is often geared towards kids and families but can range hugely in difficulty (and danger) due to both terrain and game variations such as night-caches that use flashlights and reflectors to find the final location, puzzle/mystery caches that require the player to solve puzzles to unlock the cache, and multi-caches that require multiple stages of finding different containers or coordinates to find the final cache.

The app is free to play however caches above a certain difficulty, terrain level or type are paywalled, which in hindsight seemed rather fair to me seeing as we were absolutely challenged by the more basic caches. It was surprising to me just how many caches are in Vancouver and my area alone.

I’ve actually accompanied friends geocaching years ago as a middle schooler in a different province but had never led my own outing where I understood the game or tried to navigate on my own. Me and a friend ended up finding 3 caches trying out this game for the first time (she had never heard of it before)

“Pipeline” Cache:

The first cache was located at what seemed to be the side of some mechanical shop in an industrial area. My friend was a bit intimidated as it felt as if we were trespassing but having worked in shops before I felt pretty confident about slinking around that type of area and the cache description had assured players that the owners of the building were well aware that the cache was there. We drove down and searched the location for about 15mins with no luck even after checking the hint and comments in the app, which did not reveal any spoilers. Sure enough a worker in blue coveralls came out and asked us if we were geocaching and helped us locate the cache by playing “hot or cold” with us till we found the cache in the least obvious location ever, which was actually a camouflaged metal container screwed into the pipe coming out of the wall. It had a log book and some toys. I left behind a pin from my bag. Overall an unexpected first find experience.

“McWilli Series 1” Cache:

For our 2nd cache we drove down to Fort Langley which is known as a national historic site. I also noticed that there were caches placed and maintained by Parks Canada in this area which contain information about the history of the area. This cache was not placed by Parks Canada but still contained some relevant info. This cache location appeared to be a bench on a bridge/platform. We searched the bench and passerby's looked at us like we were insane. We eventually figured that it had to be underneath the platform so we climbed down some rocks watching for prickly bushes and spiderwebs and searched underneath with no luck. We got pretty frustrated as it was extremely hot and we were pretty tired so I went through the comment section for another hint but only found that people were confirming that it was in fact under the bridge and not on the bench. With one more search I finally spotted the cache hanging from a bolt above me. It only contained a log book but I was pretty thrilled to find it.

“This is it” Cache:

Our last cache had no hints and is simply titled “this is it”. I actually forgot to take photos of this one but here’s a google maps image of the location:

When we pulled out the log to sign it it was pretty soggy, an old lady living in the house actually came out and spoke to us. She did not actually understand geocaching and thought that it was some sort of “club” but told us her son put it there and she helps maintain it, it apparently had recently been stolen/vandalized. She talked to us a bit about what the area had looked like before all the new buildings were built, and that she wanted to put a bench up front to invite more people to come watch the hummingbirds with her, despite the vandalism incident. We stayed with her for a bit and gave her the soggy log, helped her hang up some bird feeders and then left.

Behavior and Ethics:

I did not expect to encounter so many people playing this game, I ended up looking deeper into the game's “rules” and found the "Geocacher’s Creed" posted online which asks players to "avoid causing disruptions or public alarm". A lot of rules actually depend on local laws but general rules are to not endanger others, to minimize the impact on nature, to respect private property, and to avoid public alarm. Their site sells a lot of items such as stickers used on caches in case one is accidentally discovered by a non-player.

When compared to AR/real world games like pokémon go I felt that this one really connected me more to the real world than the game and screen itself because there is some degree of stealth and careful attention/environmental observation required to play. Caches containing area specific historical information and other comments such as “please pick up trash” also put into perspective the strong ethical code that players seem to push while playing this game. Much like pokémon go this game has a really strong community, however geocaching depends quite heavily on the community to regulate the game. Small details in the app such as maintenance posts and date last found help the player feel more at ease entering the unknown.

Elvis, Storage Wars and Pandemics - An Update from Las Vegas

Things are good here. We pay a little extra for a bigger ex-house trailer lot with room to park the van. We've got a little shade, too.

We watched the weather impatiently and finally arrived at King's Row in early October. The plan WAS to head north in the spring. We were going to a buffet once or twice a week and enjoying the huge selection of fast food restaurants (compared to Las Vegas, NM). Our favorite buffets are at Sam's Town and the Orleans casinos, where we gamble $5 each and get free lunch buffets. It didn't take long to find the Pink Box donuts, but they are across town and a little pricey. We got Cox cable set up at our lot, which we sooo much appreciated during the Wuhan virus months. While in NM I had gotten hooked on dumpster-diving and storage auction videos on YouTube. I found out dumpster-diving is illegal in Las Vegas, so we started going to storage auctions. My best finds were three 925 silver rings, each in a different unit. And the cash. I found a $20 bill in a BDU top and tons of spare change. A neighbor who was moving gave us a 10x10 canopy for shade while sorting.

You get tons of household stuff for just a few bucks. We can't handle mattresses and big furniture with just the little Jeep. Although the bulk of stuff goes to GoodWill, I have made over a thousand dollars on eBay and FB Marketplace. One week I went to the post office four out of five days. Some Mondays I go twice a day. We've sold TVs, game systems, games, a Kindle Oasis, a webcam, sets of high-end clothes and Nike/Jordans, Navy BDUs and uniforms, sets of books, lots of bikes, cell phones, IKEA end tables and lots of misc. At one unit I paid $35 and another bidder immediately bought two folding tables for $40.

Some of the more odd finds were a Nissan Leaf charger, some HVAC baffles, digital surveying tools, a 4' long aquarium, a digital darkroom timer, a 1972 signed Munich Olympics print (I still haven't sold this), 7 sets of barn door hardware, horse tack, meth, morphine, narcan, Rx pills (some the same that we take), tons of driver's licenses, Clark County jail IDs and some giant grow lights. We bought about 25 units until the Pandemic shut them down. They ranged in price from $5 to $85. I plan to continue when we settle down in Florida, where we'll have at least three good flea markets where we can sell stuff (last I checked). Then whatever is left will go to GoodWill. We were thinking about getting a cargo trailer here, but the BMV is closed and they won't even answer eMails about out-of-staters getting tags for trailers.

I finally gave up my flip phone for a "Smart" phone. I use it for as little as possible to avoid swearing like a drunk sailor.

Corny went to four Penn & Teller "Fool Us" tapings at the Rio casino. They will start to air on June 22.

Our Wuhan Virus Experience:

January 25th we went to the Ethel M chocolate factory in Henderson to redeem a "Tasting" groupon. We pulled into the lot and there was a tour bus parked out front. Chinese people, most of them wearing masks, were coming and going. We were aware of the virus at that time and that it was spreading from China. One of the masked women asked me to take her picture in the cactus garden - I made a rude face and waved her away. I wasn't going to touch her germy phone.

I signed up at Planet Fitness February 25. They closed a couple weeks later.

March 9th we went to the last storage auction before the Stay-at-Home season.

We started loading up on TP and food before it was popular. Before masks, every time I went to Wally's I loaded up on this n' that. When the shelves started going bare (around March 15th here), we were all set. I had three boxes of gloves, two from storage units, and a total of seven N-95 masks. The first Clark County Wuhan virus death was on March 16th. I found out why our Wal-Mart is so crazy busy all the time. While I was sitting in the Jeep waiting for Corny to buy and install a new battery, I watched a continuous parade of bus people filing back and forth from the store to the bus stop. We started going to a less germy Wally's a bit farther from home.

Corny got a second Shingles vaccine at Sam's Club. I was off wandering around shopping. Later when he wasn't feeling well I asked him what his temperature had been at Sam's. They hadn't taken it! I couldn't believe it. It's kinda standard you make sure someone isn't sick before you innoculate them!

We each got our $1200 Wuhan checks on the first round. I donated mine to Chase Bank. Corny donated his to CitiBank.

There were no casinos, buffets or auctions during "quarantine". Other than a little boredom, basically we just took our laziness to a higher level. We were used to laziness. I feel for the people with kids - and the poor kids. Geocaching Headquarters cancelled all events and the big August Geo-gatherings in Seattle and British Columbia. Corny was sad because he couldn't take the van to see State Parks, museums and such. He finally made it out west and everything was closed! He wants to stay here through the summer and take van trips to cooler places, instead of moving the bigass RV up north. I would like to head home to Florida in the fall and see about buying some land and settling down. Corny will have to use the van for extended trips out west.

Corny took the top of the engine off the Jeep to change the spark plugs. Turns out one of the cylinder heads may be bad. If so, it is a $4000 fix. Or not fix. We've gotten used to the check engine light.

Geocaching-wise, we've been to several local events. At one we donated about a dozen ready-to-go spray painted/repurposed Sam's Club-sized M&M/cashew containers. I've taken several big solo Jeep trips to complete the NV Delorme challenge. I found a nice Challenge Row just north of St. George, UT. All six of us took a nice little van trip on Route 66 (first picture, above) from Kingman, AZ to Seligman to use up the old gas in the tank. After spending 1/2 hour wiping down everything in a few germy hotel rooms, I started sleeping in the Jeep every other night. I have a pizza-shaped pool float that fits perfectly. I was almost done planning a big UT van trip when the auctions started back up.

Now when I go on a trip, I have to end 60-70 eBay listings. If I were willing to pay eBay about $5/month I could do it with one click, but I feel like I give eBay/PayPal way more than enough money already. Certainly more than they deserve. They charge auctioneer prices because they can, but in reality all they are is a listing service like Craig's List, FB MarketPlace and Offer Up, which are all free. We do all the hard work. FeeBay just sits ontheirass and sucks money. Do I sound cynical?

I've saved geocaching for last because I've got lots of pix. Here ya' go.
