... A h .
I did the math today, and figured out something that could explain two of my health struggles lately.
Discovery: Between the magnesium gummies, the relaxation gummies, and the melatonin gummies, I'm eating 18 grams of sugar before bed EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.
This is a problem for two reasons.
1.) Sugar right before bed makes it hard for me to fall asleep and/or sleep through the night. (Part of my current sleep deprivation is that I can't fall asleep lately, and another part is that I keep waking up in the middle of the night / too-early in the morning.)
2.) I get reactive hypoglycemia, which probably explains why I've been having awful sugar crashes during the work day, craving sugar/carbs in the morning even before my stomach meds kick in (and thus before I can digest things, which has Terrible Consequences if I eat before the meds kick in), and MIGHT also explain my appetite fluctuations lately. (Also: something-something, insulin resistance, possibly? This would be Bad because diabetes runs in both sides of my family. I do NOT want insulin resistance.)
I usually get sugar crashes after eating ~15g of added sugar. And I can't have any protein or fiber with the gummies to prevent the crash because I can't eat right before bed. (Or, again, Terrible Consequences.)
Potential questionably-researched thing with mostly anecdotal evidence: Sugar is also thought to be inflammatory. My increased back pain, tendonitis soreness, and gastritis-feeling issues lately might be from the daily massive sugar intake, too.
So, pro tip. If you're like me and you need OTC supplements but don't want to support Amazon:
There's a supplement website called Puritan's Pride that usually has the vast majority of its stock on a BOGO sale! They do herbals, digestive support, vitamins and minerals, targeted supplement compounds, it's actually a pretty complete catalog and they offer free shipping (at a threshold), subscriptions (for 20% off!), and everything I've ever gotten from them has worked really well. They also have many things for "buy 2, get 3 free", which is an INSANELY good deal.
I don't know if they do international shipping, but everything I've ever needed was on there, and then some.
I don't have an affiliate link, so this isn't a shill. I'm genuinely just giving advice here. They've never done me wrong.
So I just went on there and ordered a bunch of sleep supplements to try because I can't fall asleep early enough on a work night without them. /:P (Don't get DSPS, kids! It Sucks!)
Will probably be blogging the results because I need to keep track of what works and what doesn't.
#The only thing I couldn't find on there was lemon balm that wasn't attached to 10mg of melatonin.#I don't like exceeding 5mg because it gives me a headache; makes me sleepy in the morning;#and I suspect I'm one of those people where higher doses of melatonin actually worsen my depression.#Because I noticed that when I was trying to take 10mg of melatonin.#(It didn't even help me sleep better. Just made me unbearably tired for So Many Hours.)#Hence: the whole regimen of valerian; chamomile; lavender; melatonin; magnesium; and L-theanine to get to sleep.#Usually also lemon balm and passionflower but I forget which of the herbs the onesa I bought contained or excluded...#It's mostly the valerian; melatonin; magnesium; and L-theanine that helps me sleep though.#For the record I AM taking all of these under the supervision of my psychiatrist and she's on board with them all#because these supplements are generally considered safe. Even in combination. As long as I don't take too much (dosage-wise) basically.#Gonna have to split one of the supplements in half because it IS a 10mg melatonin one but they LOOK split-able...#rhs personal posts#rhs emlog#Not rebloggable because it contains a lot of Personal Health Information.#This was mostly for Personal Journaling Purposes and having it written down somewhere so I don't forget.
