when I beat my racist high school bully out for valedictorian, it didn't end racism. but it still felt fucking good. i know not a single player on team canada care about me and my community. and know team canada winning didn't end fascism but it felt fucking good. and at the VERY least that man won't be able to use the outcome as a propaganda piece. you're right it is a moral victory. but it's better than a fucking loss.

i'm glad you can feel better for five minutes, and i am genuinely glad the trolling online from clownish republicans will stop about hockey at least (minus sarah palin who genuinely likes hockey apparently), bc they never actually cared about anything but stirring the pot. which worked tremendously well lol.

on the exact same hand, i think americans that enjoy hockey going through a tough time right now would have enjoyed a win too so. like have your fun.. i'm not mad at that outcome by any stretch of the imagination, but the second stupid shit like it's OUR sport in all sincerity and and blah blah creeps in, it sounds stupid and nationalist... esp the more removed we get from the moment.

Why did he decide to do a fucking PhD again? Ashton was questioning his life choices once again when deadline season rolls by, for his own papers and including marking bachelors students' papers. He groaned as fingers pulled through his hair in frustration, 24 hours in a day was not enough. Ruth was on a night shift in solidarity and he made sure Charlie didn't stay up with him. Charlie had let him keep the diner open overnight, access to a fresh new pot of coffee right before she left to keep him going, with snacks in a corner and a pillow and blanket for a nap. Stacks of papers and books he's brought home from campus strewn across one of the diner booths along with his laptop and notebooks, lights still turned on despite the closed sign out front.

He hasn't stopped or gotten up in hours, not even hearing the door being pushed open, or the call of his name, or insulting nickname. It wasn't until a fresh cup of coffee was placed directly in front of him, "why are you still buzzin' away, boy scout?"

Ashton stopped his work or marking through papers and blinked his tired eyes through his reading glasses, looking up to Jeremiah sliding into the booth with him, sitting directly across with his own hot cup. It was a welcoming face to rest his eyes on. "Deadlines, I got a few things due in the morning," he lightly sighed but greeted the man with a half smile, taking off his reading glasses before muttering a soft thanks, one hand wrapped around the offered mug, "you?" A few years in by now he knew the eldest Rose often did odd hours of the day, it wasn't uncommon for them to bump into each other like this.

Jer shrugged, "work, the usual, just got back." Ash doesn't question it, not really wanting to get into the specifics of what he does for Sada. It was none of his business to give any opinions on it. And so he simple hummed, taking a sip of the coffee before his hands continued to work, "you should go to sleep then." He looked exhausted, honestly a lot of the times. But instead Jeremiah only seemed to pause and settle in further, getting comfortable, "I'm alright, 'sides, who's gonna keep you awake?" Ash chuckled at that reply with a shake of his head but doesn't debate his decision any further, selfishly would actually like the company but also didn't expect it.

But perhaps an hour in, that visible exhaustion had kicked in and the next time Ash looked up to check on the comforting presence, Jer had fallen asleep head resting on the table. Ashton's hand completely stopped for the first time, taking in the soft, endearing scene in front of him. Whether was something about the sweet gesture of staying with him or the serene expression of peace for once on the older man's face or both, he felt a warmth in his chest growing and festering, not noticing the growing smile on his face as he rested his elbow on the table and chin on his palm. He wasn't sure how long he spent studying his face and appreciating every small feature but he snapped out of it as rationality reminded him of his own ticking deadline. Ash got up and stretched his aching muscles, a brief reprieve to place the blanket over the other's shoulders and pillow under his head before willing himself to focus and go back to work.

Suffice to say Ash stayed awake and pulled through, making the deadlines, thanking Jer for the moral support though never telling him of the innocent, tender distractions.
