Empire Presents... Full Cycle 2000 (November 20th, 1999 - Toronto, ON)

So there is this title card for Falke before you fight her. And the font rose engine used there always fascinated me. Unfortunately the font can’t be found in the game files. So I decided it would be a fun project to take those five letters and reverse-engineer the font.

So I knew the font was based on a Transitional Serif form principle due to the rounded transitions between stem and serif. I had the dimensions for vertical and horizontal stems. Unfortunately I there was not a single round letter (O, U, Q, C, S, G), so I had to come up with my own idea how to the them. I decided to go for a pronounced shadow axis as the straight axis didn’t sit right with me. I mean, isn’t the game full of queer characters? ; )

When I looked through the game files at a later point I found this image. Well, turns out I guessed wrong with round shapes. They are a lot more straight then I designed mine : / I also learned that the style is probably inspired by the graphic design used in Neon Genesis Evangelion. There they just squashed and stretched Times New Roman or something adjacent. That is probably also the reason why the font wasn’t showing up in the game files.

Anyway, I still like the outcome and will continue working on it.

I also used this in a book layout and really liked it.

Recapitulating the week.

Added more pages to my website and worked on the layout some more: now there is a now page, about what I am doing, like Scott Boms put it on his own now page, now‑ish, a page about which tools I use to stay informed and mostly secured, and I have added a page linking to my friends.

That last part is sort of important, because of how important my connections are to me. Currently, most of the people on that page are from my graphic design study, but this will expand, with time, of that I am equal parts hopeful and certain.

I am also currently excavating the milieu around the book Creative Code by Maeda, with my eye already on Design by Numbers as well.

Autumn is here, with the Spätsommer’s last rays of a kinder sun, and as the outside air wafts in through heavy green curtains, I briefly understand that all things change, before I type on.

I wanted to write something about how it has been a long time since I have worked on my foundations for drawing, painting, and illustration, but I won’t.

I am moving on from judging, instead. I have been judging all kinds of things in all kinds of manners, and I am frankly just plain bored by it.

Have been playing Cyberpunk 2077 a lot, and I plan to play a lot more of it in the upcoming days.

I even bought two books about Cyberpunk: the artbook, and the pen and paper RPG called Cyberpunk RED.

I love Cyberpunk. The games. The genre lit I mostly avoid.

Riso-printed colors are kinda magical.

I made this as the documentation for my BA thesis.

Though I studied design I never really got good at creating professional product shots : ( It taunts me, but I keep telling myself that this probably has its own charm.

Glitching fans and dust, a note about reading the internet

Used my document scanner some more (scanning tags and stickers people put on lamp posts is a cool thing to do).

While driving for a while today, I took note of how odd it is to be a person who is always ready to do smalltalk: thanks to the internet in general, and social media specifically, people can always have dozens of conversations with almost everyone else, kind of like a ready‑made dialog where whole topics can be discussed without having a thought of your own.

I don’t know about you, but reading the internet is usually such an overwhelming experience that I rarely had the chance to consider how overwhelming it actually is:

the experience of reading the internet does not create any memories.

And that is how I measure how much of an overwhelming experience something is – by how likely it leaves memories behind.

Dealing with that has become my personal goal, in a way. I want to create a much more simple life for me, and not being able to do smalltalk at all, well – that is just a nice start, I think.

Eventually, I want to further grow my own garden of my mind, until I always feel as if I am sitting in my tiny house in the Austrian Alps, instead of feeling like someone who uses his thumb to read the next screen height, at random, without end.

I think that is why I like reading books, while the internet eventually exhausts me and leaves me with nothing to show for it.

In the end, I can create a memory of what I read online by consciously willing it – but honestly, that seems like a waste in itself.

And if to remember feels like a waste, then the whole action becomes something worthy of reconsideration.
