Been playing a platformer called Symphonia and its good but I keep swinging between "this game is pretty easy" and "1846 deaths" the last time I checked the counter
#Maybe its not that its easy just that its mechanics are simple#Cause the level design certainly is a test of willpower at times. But that is what keeps me focused so#It *is* fucking gorgeous though. One of the most visually beautiful games ive ever played. Literally magical#I kept wondering how to put into words why I always latch onto platformers way easier than any other type of game#The resetting and retrying after countless mistakes till you make it by the skin of your teeth or execute it flawlessly without thinking#Constant movement constant inputs constant reaction all in a space where you have time to process it. To breathe while thinking about it#I dont know. I think something in my brain was created in a lab to be attuned to going from point A to B over and over again#And platformers are just that distilled into something I can explore like a growing slime mold#Also I like the little guy protagonists. Why are platformer pcs always tiny little guys with grappling hooks

Imagining an ending for CR3 where a single instance of true resurrection is on the table and they have a choice between making Laudna un-undead and getting FCG back

if your ocs were bosses in a video game, what do you think their boss fight would be like?
#red rambles#im thinking about this with mine and curious what other people have thought up#sidebar: i have been thinking about things like 'mechamics' and 'the kinds of attacks they'd use' and 'phases' and 'gimmicks'#i havent detailed them all here because i figured it wouldn't be what other people wanted to read#unfortunately it seems also everyone else thinks this. i want to hear about your mechanics....#so i guess ill go add mine in#kit and kat would be a pair of optional bosses who you fight together - kit a dex build who moves into a strength+dex combo in her second#phase; she doesn't get a second health bar#but it gets dramatically harder to hit her and she stops getting stunned nearly as easily in the second phase#and her hits get much harder#KAT (her gimmick partner) also has a second phase#if you haven't killed Kit before you activate Kat's second phase#(Kat gets a second health bar) she teleports herself and Kit out of the boss fight arena and (as they're optional)#this technically means you can progress but you get no winnings#and the next time you come back they're there again#im imagining them like ds1r havel where he's just like in a shortcut. they're camping a door#anyway you have to fully kill Kit to#get to kill Kat#and her second phase will activate when Kit dies in that case#and she'll go from infrequent but hard-hitting long-distance attacks to frequent long-distance attacks with less intensity behind them#and a set of melee attacks that do a lot of damage but require her to grapple you so if you don't get grabbed you're alright#meanwhile rex (the other one i discussed on discord) is a mainline boss who keeps dying and then just showing up again but he dies like#his ass is DEAD he's not walking off he DIES. okay?#you have to kill him at least twice for the mainline quest and there's even more optional places you can kill him#the first three or four sequential fights (only one of which is mainline) he's human the whole time#the second mainline fight he changes forms and his second phase is in dragon form#and he doesn't get a second health bar or anything but he does get aoe fire attacks#and gets to visibly take damage at increasing levels before you kill him#he also has a mechanic where on his last dot of health he can absorb like 4x the normal amount of damage#so when he should be one hit away from death he is in fact four or five hits away from death

yes i’m a solavellan through and through but i’m also absolutely obsessed with the solas/rook dynamic in a worst ending/everyone dies scenario actually.
interesting that his best case scenario (in the case of a romanced inquisitor) involves walking off into the fade prison with lavellan, and the worst case scenario involves both him and rook being violently pulled into the fade prison together. idk what it means but it’s soo interesting. to me
#i have some Thoughts but the mechanics of the fade prison were. vague and hand-wavey#much like the rest of the game oops#but basically. rook has the tools to escape the fade prison (mastery over their ‘regrets’ and/or the lyrium dagger)#so they will either be grappling with solas for all eternity or he hunts them for all eternity to try and escape#(interesting to me if it’s the latter- he truly becomes He Who Hunts Alone)#bc he has not chosen to atone he only wants to escape. basically on this path he’s been pushed towards his ‘corrupted’ self in a way#while the opposite is true if he does go willingly. he chooses to atone (alone or with the inquisitor)#on this route he presumably will be able to slowly heal and return to something closer to his original form of wisdom#either way it sounds like something out of a dalish folk tale for sure. the former a cautionary tale and the latter more a fairytale#idk if this is anything. maybe this is nonsense#but i like turning the dynamic over in my head#shut up kat

You're quite the epic one
I just found this program that converts MTG cards into D&D monster stat blocks and at first I was like "how would that even work?" And I figured that it probably looked at power/toughness, cost, color, types, and keyword abilities to set some basic stats and powers, but still, how do you give a monster attacks based on a magic card? Probably just generic attacks based off its power that the user is supposed to rewrite into something fitting. Looking at the examples they give, there's no way it could possibly generate abilities like that. These are obviously edited afterward to add cool fitting and flavorful abilities. That's... definitely not a regular archer ability. It's fitting of a black skeleton archer, and you can draw a connection to its damage ability, but how could the program possibly do that? I plugged in Apprentice Sharpshooter and, naturally, it didn't have that ability, but what it did have was
That's DEFINITELY a reference to it putting +1/+1 counters on itself. How much of a card's text does this thing read?! I looked around the page, searching for details on how exactly this thing works. Is it AI or something!? The only thing I found was the patch notes and
It's not AI. It's all painstakingly handwritten, looking for specific common strings of text and mapping them to custom abilities. Combining the abilities with colors and types to make even more detailed abilities like Cursed Arrow. This program is a work of art.
#the code and the english are sloppy as hell but DAMN#i know the code is sloppy because i downloaded Java Decompiler just so that i could see the exact innerworkings of this beast#haven't gotten to the good stuff yet tho#also i just checked two other black archers (Ruthless Sniper and Thornbow Archer)#and they don't have cursed arrow. they have completely different abilities#Thornbow Archer's abilities are kinda weird and random tho#it has a grapple ability? idk#i guess causing opponents to lose life is a weird mechanic to represent from just text#even with all this effort there's gonna be stuff that doesn't quite fit#especially since the same physical actions can be represented in different ways in mtg#all 3 of those archers' abilities are just “shoot an arrow”#anyway looking forward to reading more of this code#it's 360KB!#wait a sec it's just the monster.class file that's 27600 lines long holy fuck#how do you write that many lines???#based on what i've read so far i'm guessing there's lots of copy-pasted code#but still what the fuck?#no wait hang on i've written at least double that amount of KB in txt files in the past 3 years#WAIT WHAT THE FUCK?! Our apologies if the sudden influx of personal posts is too intense, by the way. We know we're shattering under the weight of things that are relatively trivial, in the grand scheme of things, and it would likely be easier to direct this whole mess to being more private, but the thing that caused this in the first place was a set of online communications being on the verse of shutting down, and we… we think we just want to talk to someone right now. Doesn't necessarily have to be to anyone in particular, we just need to talk and have someone answer.
If you don't want to handle... everything, then that's perfectly understandable. Blacklisting the "negative chatter" tag will filter out most of this. Our notifications are still... not really acting correctly, but asks and messages are worth their weight in gold, for all that they have weight. We may be... distracted, or in pain, or all of the above, but we will appreciate it. Questions on fic and story ideas may be harder to answer than usual, but we will still try and answer, even if it's delayed. We're just feeling a bit... brittle.
We've been thinking of maybe starting a Discord server, but its more recent updates have grown more hostile to us, and we fear that it, too, will be reaching the end of its lifespan - and beyond that, we are not wholly certain that we can continue running a server sufficiently past this point of crisis and craving of companionship. We are running out of places to... exist, which is not a new state of being, but is a state we are increasingly struggling to grapple with. We have a tendency to lock up, in times of stress, but that is not an option now, which means we are... forcing ourself into action, a bit.
We have a project of nearly five years that will go down the drain as permanently uncompleteable if we do not finish it before 3DS communications shut down, where we thought we had time, and were evidently mistaken. We are going to have to cut corners on it, because even if we spent every single hour of every single day from now until the shutdown on a 3DS without pausing even to eat or sleep, we would be unable to meet the original estimate. We hate having to slice off pieces like this, and we hate having to settle for something worse, but we have no choice. We feel... well, "exhausted" is probably underselling it. We're tired, and sad, and angry, and a whole mess of other things, and we don't know how we're going to solve this without breaking entirely. We'll have to figure it out, or break. Jury's out on which it'll be.
We appreciate you listening. We appreciate you hanging out on our blog. And... thank you for sticking with us through this. We hope, sincerely, that we can offer something in return for you eventually.
