★★½
Plot: Without any friends her own age, an isolated girl befriends the ghost of her father's late wife.
Review: With very little tying it to its predecessor, this film is a sweet but somewhat uneventful ghost story upon which someone forced an existing IP.

-----
Story: 2.5/5 - While the story of a little girl failing social expectations and befriending a ghost is engaging, it is degraded by its forced connection to the first film, unrelated B plot, and rushed resolution.
Performances: 3.5/5 - Carter stands out above the rest as the sensitive, somber Amy.
Cinematography: 3.5/5 - Solid lighting and shadow tricks during the story's supernatural events.
Tumblr media
Editing: 3/5 - Not too striking outside of some nice dissolves.
Music: 3/5
Sets: 3.5/5 - The Farren manor is wonderfully creepy.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 4/5

Trigger Warnings:
Emotional abuse of a child
Corporal punishment/physical child abuse (not shown)
Uncritical portrayal of a black man cheerfully serving a white family

[Image description: A digital drawing of the characters Irena and Amy Reed from the film The Curse of the Cat People. It depicts Irena's ghost guarding over Amy as the girl appears to be searching. Irena has a loving smile on her face and two stars track down her cheek, like tear drops. A point on each star travels up her cheek like scars. She has pulled the hood of her white cloak over her head, and both it and her dress sparkle. A glow emanates off of her, and the way she's coloured make her the brightest part of the piece. Her left arm reaches out behind Amy, as if protecting her. Amy doesn't seem to notice her, despite the glow or the fact that Irena towers over her. She is worriedly looking in the opposite direction, hand above her eyes. She's wrapped up for the cold, and her hair and scarf blow in the wind - Irena is comparatively static. The background is Amy's garden. There's snow on the ground but the nighttime sky is clear, though starry. The gnarled tree behind Amy has a pair of cat-like eyes in its hollowed middle, and a large branch hangs over Irena. The end of it is shaped like a clawed hand, which curls around and points towards her. This piece has purplish and pinkish tones, but all the colours lean somewhat grey or brown.]

This is one of my favorite kinds of movies, and these are great recs. I would add a few:
Fanny and Alexander, 1982, dir. Ingmar Bergman
Parents, 1989, dir. Bob Balaban
The Curse of the Cat People, 1944, dir. Robert Wise & Gunther von Fritsch
I Start Counting, 1970, dir. David Greene
Laurin, 1989, dir. Robert Sigl
Lemora, 1973, dir. Richard Blackburn
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, 1970, dir. Jaromil Jireš
I Start Counting, Laurin, Lemora and Valerie are more coming of age stories, but I think they still fit.
And perhaps it's considerably different from the others, but I'd also recommend The World Is Full of Secrets, 2018, dir. Graham Swon.
very into films from a child’s perspective about the weirdness, imagination and perversity of childhood at the moment
