Storia Di Musica #327 - U2, The Unforgettable Fire, 1984

L'ultimo edificio di questa piccola carrellata di dischi che ne hanno uno in copertina ci porta nella Contea di Westmeath, nel cuore d'Irlanda, con le rovine di un castello, quello di Moydrum, situato nei pressi della cittadina di Athlone. Lì quattro ragazzi irlandesi, insieme a quello che diventerà il loro amico e fotografo per i successivi quattro decenni, Anton Corbijn, posano per la copertina di un disco che nelle loro intenzioni doveva rappresentare una svolta concettuale e musicale. È facile d'altronde mettere a confronto le prime copertine degli U2 con questa, e rilevarne la differenza concettuale: lo sguardo dolce di Peter Rowen, il fratellino di Guggi, amico di Bono, che capeggia in Boy (1980), la band ripresa in October (1981) sullo sfondo il porto di Dublino, e lo sguardo, rabbioso e drammatico, dello stesso Peter Rowen in War (1983, una delle copertine più iconiche del decennio). Dopo il tour di War, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton e Larry Mullen Jr. cercano una svolta. Bono, con una mossa che riprenderà anche in futuro, annunciò all'ultimo concerto di quel tour che la band necessitava di "essere sciolta".

Un rinnovamento che passa da un nuovo approccio alla composizione e da una guida in produzione musicale che sia diversa da Steve Lillywhite, che li aveva seguiti nei primi tre capitoli della loro storia. The Edge, affascinato dai suoi lavori discografici e dal suo ruolo di produttore per i Talking Heads, chiede di contattare Brian Eno. La scelta non sembrava affatto sensata: una band sanguigna, epica, con il guru della musica ambient, della sottrazione emotiva. Registrato nella sala di ballo, trasformata in studio di registrazione, di un altro castello, lo Slane Castle, e presso gli studi di Windmill Lane a Dublino, The Unforgettable Fire prende il nome dal titolo di una mostra fotografica itinerante giapponese sui disastri di Hiroshima e Nagasaki, che i quattro videro al The Peace Museum di Chicago. È una sensazione diversa ascoltare il suono, ricco, cinematografico, di A Sort Of Homecoming che apre la scaletta. Un suono arioso, sostenuto, con l'abbandono della batteria "militaresca" dei lavori precedenti, la chitarra di The Edge che inizia a disegnare paesaggi luminosi, il supporto robusto del basso di Clayton e Bono che si lancia nella descrizione di paesaggi spirituali niente male: hai fame di tempo\tempo per guarire e desiderare, del tempo\e senti la terra muoversi sotto di te\il paesaggio di sogno che hai creato (...) le mura della città sono cadute\la polvere, un velo di fumo tutt'intorno\volti arati come i campi che un tempo\ non opponevano resistenza. Dello stesso tenore, con quest'aggiunta espressionista, sono Wire (addirittura pensata solo come abbozzo nel testo, e registrata con Bono che in parte improvvisa durante il canto) la spettacolare The Unforgettable Fire, e Indian Summer Sky, che è l'espressione anglofona per l'Estate di San Martino. Canzoni che tra l'altro sfuggono alla struttura classica con la ripetizione del ritornello, spesso non citano il titolo nel testo e entusiasmano, spesso ancora oggi, per il lavoro di addizione sonora e di sensazioni che lasciano. Ma è un album che contiene tanto altro: due strumentali, 4th Of July (che è il giorno della nascita della prima figlia di The Edge, e registrata quasi di nascosto da Eno mentre Clayton e il chitarrista improvvisavano) e MLK, dedicato a Martin Luther King, al quale è dedicato anche il brano simbolo del disco, e primo singolo dell'opera, Pride (In The Name Of Love), il cui video musicale fu girato nella sala da ballo allestita a studio di registrazione dello Slane Castle. C'è la poesia dolce e fluttuante di Promenade, un gioiellino che racconta il flusso di pensieri durante una passeggiata, c'è l'esperimento di Elvis Presley And America: basata sulla traccia base rallentata di A Sort of Homecoming, è una improvvisazione canora di Bono, che immagina il Re, ormai sul viale del tramonto, che ricorda il suo passato, specialmente il suo rapporto con Priscilla, e fu una single take lasciata così, grezza e con la voce che dà la sensazione di un'eco più lontana e oscura. Rimane un ultimo grande pezzo: Bad fu scritta da Bono in ricordo di un suo compagno di scuola morto di overdose da eroina il giorno del suo 21° compleanno, è drammatica nel suo crescendo emotivo e diviene una sorta di prototipo di stile U2\Eno\Lanois. Diventerà uno dei momenti clou dei concerti negli anni a seguire.

Un disco dalle tinte sfocate, dai paesaggi sonori sfumati, dalla musicalità complessa poteva sembrare un azzardo per una band considerata così sanguigna. Invece fu un successo: primo disco degli U2 al primo posto della classifica britannica, in top ten in quella americana, e soprattutto la sensazione che la piantina musicale che qui nasce crescerà subito e velocemente, per certi versi in maniera fragorosa, per cambiare il volto alla musica dei decenni a venire. Ma probabilmente questo non lo sapevano ancora.

100. Shadow Warrior (1997) New Entry (Available on: Steam, GOG) Alright, disclaimer: this game is definitely a product of its time, spoofing bad kung fu movies, so it has some cringeworthy stereotyping, especially with Lo Wang, but Shadow Warrior brought some new ideas, such as secondary fire modes with weapons and controllable vehicles. I won't blame you for not playing this one, though.

99. Sid Meier's Covert Action New Entry (Available on: Steam, GOG) A thrilling tale of espionage, you control Max Remington (who can be either male or female) in a mix of genres. While it did coin the “Covert Action rule” for Sid Meier (“It's better to make one good game than two great games.”) it's still a fun time.

98. POSTAL 4: No Regerts Previous Rank: 91 (Available on: Steam, GOG) I know it's weird, but POSTAL 4 is a good game to me. It's not perfect, of course, it's a POSTAL game, there's gonna be some jank and some jokes that miss, but you have to remember: POSTAL knows it's a video game and acts appropriately. It's not for everyone, but I like it.

97. Half-Life 2 Previous Rank: 96 (Available on: Steam) Okay, so I didn't get raked over the coals for ranking HL2 low in my previous Top 100. It's a little lower than last time, but that's because there's so much new stuff in the list, and I still don't like Ravenholm.

96. You Don't Know Jack Volume 1 XL Previous Rank: 98 (Available on: Steam, Jackbox) While I love the original YDKJ for the host and the questions and the music, it's missing later additions like DisOrDats and other question types. It only has Gibberish Questions and Jack Attacks aside from the regular multiple-choice questions. It's still a good game.

95. Leisure Suit Larry 1: In The Land of the Lounge Lizards Previous Rank: 85 (Available on: GOG) The first LSL is short, but an enjoyable time where you have to help Larry; Larry Laffer find true love. Like last time, I'm lumping all three versions in one position because they're all basically the same game, just with slight puzzle adjustments across all three.

94. Serious Sam 2 Previous Rank: 89 (Available on: Steam) Serious Sam 2 is the wacky one, and it's still a good time. It's just as difficult, even though 2K tried to get Croteam to “kidify” it, for some reason. I'm glad Devolver took over publishing.

93. Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods Previous Rank: 40 (Available on: Steam, GOG, EA) Ah, Peter Molyneux before he was the butt of every Guru Larry joke. Believe it or not, he actually made some fun games, Populous II being one of them. It's an intuitive god game where you have to defeat your opponent by being more, well, populous.

92. Webfishing New Entry (Available on: Steam) Webfishing is a nice chill game where you fish with your friends on the web. Hence the name. I really like this one, it's a good time with friends.

91. The Sims 3 Previous Rank: 92 (Available on: Steam, EA) The Sims 3 brings an open world to the life simulator, and it's just a great game. It's not as detailed as The Sims 2, but it still brings a smile to my face. And Create-A-Style needs to come back, Sims 4 is lame.

Madame Rouge (Laura De Mille): Once a promising French actress, Laura De Mille was living high. But shortly after her film career began to take off outside of France, she was in a tragic car accident that shattered her brain. I mean, her physical body and her motor functions were still the same, but her very personality was split in two: one side good and the other side evil. From one day to the next, she would behave like two different women. This put a tragic end to her career. Depressed and desperate, she went to every doctor in Paris. None was able to cure her.

Until, that is, one fateful day a few months into her schizophrenic break. A doctor said he could help her by suppressing her evil side, and she eagerly accepted. As she would later learn, this doctor was actually Monsieur Mallah, the hyper-intelligent gorilla partner of The Brain. The surgery actually suppressed her good side, and let her evil personality take full control. Welcoming her into the Brotherhood of Evil as "Madame Rouge", Laura De Mille became one of their best agents.

But eventually the Doom Patrol crossed paths with the Brotherhood of Evil, and this was when her life began to take a series of highs and lows. The Brain gave her an experimental surgery to make her skin as flexible as rubber, so that she could become the Brotherhood's counter to Elasti-Girl (Rita Farr). Around this time, Laura also began to fall in love with Niles Caulder, leader of the Doom Patrol. Her love for him led to her being unable to serve the Brotherhood with full devotion, and to The Chief learning of her past as an actress.

From here, The Chief and The Brain began fighting to control her mind by shooting mental rays at her. The trauma broke her into two people, and her good side killed her evil side once and for all. Or, well, it would've been once and for all. But her evil side resurfaced because of two incidents. One incident we see: it involved the Brotherhood of Evil using one of their agents (disguised as a guru) to draw her evil side back out of her. But the other incident was one of pure heartbreak. Laura began hitting on The Chief, trying to seduce him. But Niles pulled away (too worried about hurting his wife, Arani). This made her feel betrayed by the one man who she thought trusted her, and it allowed her evil side to become one with her good side.

Yes, Laura De Mille had lost her split personality problem (for the most part). Her brain was clear about what it wanted: she wanted to live for herself, and herself alone. Screw Niles Caulder and screw The Brain. Madame Rouge can do it all right on her own. She won't rest until she's had her revenge on everyone! And this leads her to successfully kill the Doom Patrol, through the aid of a retired Nazi general! Or well, she thought she killed them. But Mr. Nobody had manipulated things behind the scenes, and he only made them look dead (so he could abduct and torture them after she left).

But all the rest of the story is covered in my other Doom Patrol notes. Really, i just want to share the story of what happens after the old Doom Patrol members (Niles Caulder, Rita Farr and Larry Trainor) are saved from Mr. Nobody's nightmare dimension. Laura De Mille has successfully usurped control of the Brotherhood of Evil from The Brain and Monsieur Mallah. Those two have had to flee to a hidden bunker somewhere in eastern europe, where they now operate a seperate Brotherhood of Evil (and try to reclaim their old organization from Madame Rogue).

But in the meantime, Madame Rouge has become the most prominent and ruthless female mob boss in the world. She's living high as the head of the Brotherhood, while continuing to plot revenge against Niles and Arani Caulder (and their group of freakish allies). Laura is still hurt by Niles rejecting her for Arani, and she doesn't seem capable of letting it go. Her schizophrenia and multiple personalities have stabilized, but only by focusing on her hatred for the Caulders. And her powers have begun to run rampant and act uncontrollably whenever she's too agitated and upset.

The best beginning poets I know are also the most literary: what they demonstrate is a love for poetry rather than a love for themselves. Let me exaggerate and be at once overly literal and the mind’s peasant for a moment: to look into my heart is to look into a muscle. To really look inquiringly inward as Sidney advises or as the most well-intentioned guru advises, is to encounter, at least on some very honest days, my own space; it is to discover how empty I am, how much an onlooker and a gazer I have to be in order to write poems. And, if I am lucky, it is to find out how I can be filled enough by what is not me to use it, to have a subject, and, consequently, to find myself as a poet. I like to oversimplify Husserl by saying: Consciousness is always consciousness of something. I am no phenomenologist, and I know that such a “something” is different from the simple materiality of the world that I mean, but here I have misunderstood Husserl just enough for him to be meaningful, meaningful to me. His remark becomes, in its way, as possible for me as George Oppen’s lines: “Two. / He finds himself by two.” And of course “he” does, or I do; and how else could it, and “I,” have taken place at all: for example, that miracle of dawn or twilight along the road and me there, looking out of my skull, a witness to it? And this must occur many times, with regularity, or else the world would be nonsense, a mute noise.

Y'all, if something REALLY had happened btwn those two, I doubt they'd be so chummy on the red carpet with each other lol....especially when he's got a whole a** girlfriend lol.

You all really have to learn how to read body language better lol. 😅

Most media gurus say that usually if something has happened btwn two co-stars (or a secret attraction) they're actually LESS likely to be all that "chummy" on the red carpet w/each other, cuz they don't want people knowing/suspecting something is going on (or HAS gone on) btwn them bts. So they'll usually AVOID each other. Won't even take pictures with each other...not w/out others at least.

Or, if they are asked to take pics together, it will be awkward and not "friendship" vibes at all. That's if their awkwardness isn't being caused by something ELSE.... *ahem* like fan shipping them together when they CLEARLY don't want to be. 🤨😒

Timmy and Z don't want to be shipped with each other, I think that's painfully OBVIOUS. Even in the Dune 1 premiere and photocall in Paris, they both joked and made some comment towards each other while taking pictures that they didn't wanna do something because they didn't want people making a mountain out of a mole hill. Thanksgiving to Santa Claus Rally Trade — Time to Feast

Thanksgiving kicks off a run of solid bullish seasonal patterns. November-January is the year’s best consecutive 3-month span (2024 STA p 149). Then there’s the January Effect (2024 STA p 112 & 114) of small caps outperforming large caps in January, which begins in mid-December.

And of course, the “Santa Claus Rally,” (2024 STA p 118) invented and named by Yale Hirsch in 1972 in the Almanac. Often confused with any Q4 rally, it is defined as the short, sweet rally that covers the last 5 trading days of the year and the first two trading days of the New Year. Yale also coined the phrase: “If Santa Claus should fail to call, bears may come to Broad and Wall.”

We have combined these seasonal occurrences into a single trade: Buy the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and hold until the 2nd trading day of the New Year. Our good friend and renowned technician and options guru Larry McMillan of the Options Strategist opened our eyes to this trade and runs it with options starting on the day before Thanksgiving.

Since 1950, S&P 500 is up 79.45% of the time from the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to the 2nd trading day of the year with an average gain of 2.57%. Russell 2000 is up 77.27% of the time since 1979, average gain 3.19%.

so, i go. goat yoga. chickens. a single cow. and i’m already asking myself why this place is called #moocommune if there’s literally one cow — and she looks like she’s plotting her escape.

a guy named larry — “the guru,” self-declared founder, spiritual guide, and possible full-time shady business guy — greets me and declares, “we rise with the cows.” okay, sure. because that’s a normal thing to hear before goat yoga.

i notice everyone calls each other brother moo and sister moo. huh. cute... or cult?

somehow, i get that feeling — like someone’s watching me.

and that’s when i recognize the cowplants. giant. perfectly lined up. like someone did it on purpose. but who would plant cowplants, anyway?

larry smiles. “they’re sacred,” he says. “but they don’t harm those who belong.”

the cowplants stare. i stare back.

then larry puts a hand on my shoulder and whispers, “you are exactly where you belong.”
